Subject: Aaron Weisblatt – World and Characters!

I learned today that some of my secondary characters need more background.

My CONCEPT and the Big M.I.S. of House Hunted:

House Hunted follows a young Brooklyn couple on a weekend getaway, looking for a house in the country. The house of their dreams soon becomes a house of horrors after they witness a brutal political murder and struggle to escape a certain death at the hands of a gang of white supremacists.

Big Mystery: Will Alex and Colton escape from the house where they witness the brutal murder of a judge by the hands of white supremacist?

Big Intrigue: What are the motives of the white supremacist for the gang killing a federal judge?

Big Suspense: Will Alex be able to save herself and Colton from being discovered by the gang and killed?

The Intriguing World is a post-Trumpian dystopian America that has turned into a place where militia and white nationals are infiltrating and controlling the system.

With your top 2 or 3 characters, tell us the role they play and then answer these three questions:

    Alex – Protagonist

    A. What is the mystery of this character?

Alex has a fear of violence and guns because of her childhood. She also has a photographic memory.

    B. What is the suspense of this character?

Will she be able to over come her fear of violence and guns in order to save herself and Colton

    C. What is the intrigue of this character?

Alex has a photographic memory and knows things most people dont. She will be able to use her knowledge to save herself And Colton.

    Christian – Antagonist

    A. What is the mystery of this character?

Why is he killing a federal judge?

    B. What is the suspense of this character?

He has plans for something bigger – what is that?

    C. What is the intrigue of this character?

Will he escape capture after his most of his gang is killed?

I learned doing this assignment that my story has all the elements needed for a great thriller.

    House Hunted

Logline: <i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>House Hunted follows a young Brooklyn couple on a weekend getaway, looking for a house in the country. The house of their dreams soon becomes a house of horrors after they witness a brutal political murder and struggle to escape a certain death at the hands of a gang of white supremacists.

    1. What are the conventions of your story?

    Unwitting but Resourceful Hero: <div>

Alex is a Black woman from Brooklyn who, although fearful of violence and guns, must find an inner strength to save herself and her husband from being murdered.

    <div>

Dangerous Villain: Two of the members of the white supremacists gang are dangerous killers but the leader is a psychopath bent of doing all he can to overthrow the government.

High stakes: Alex and Colton must escape the basement they have become trapped in and the killers that are chasing them.

Life and death situations: Alex could easily be found hiding in a car by one of the killers who would kill her if she were found and in the end, as she and Colton are trapped in a ravine by one of the killers, she has to defend herself using a gun – something she never thought she would have to do.

This story is thrilling because? Our two protagonist are surprised by a violent gang, who commit a murder in the same house, and become trapped and have to figure a way out.

    2. Tell us the Big M.I.S. of your story?

Big Mystery: How will Alex and Colton be discovered by the murderous gang?</div><div>

Big Intrigue: Why is the gang killing a federal judge?

<u style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Big Suspense: Will Alex be discovered by the gang and killed?

    Subject line: DON’T BREATHE

What I learned doing this assignment is that the hero isn’t always a good guy.

    Crime Thriller convention

    Unwitting but Resourceful Hero:

Rocky is an anti hero – a criminal who robs houses and overcomes the obstacles the Villian places before her.

    Dangerous Villain:

The War Vet who owns the house that Rocky and her two compatriots rob.

    High stakes:

Stealing the money and getting away with the crime

    Life and death situations:

The war vet fighting them in multiple scenes. He has them trapped in various places in the house.

    This movie is thrilling because?

It’s a unique set up – our robbers have to be quiet to try to evade the war vet because he is blind. But he can hear them move. There are a whole host of twist and turns and reveals that make their journey really thrilling. At times you think they might escape but the never do, until the end, when Rocky battles the war vet and is able to finally escape.

What is the BIG Mystery, Intrigue, and Suspense of this story?

Big Mystery: How will Rocky get out of the house?

Big Intrigue: How will the War Vet get his money back and protect his secret in the basement from being revealed?

Big Suspense: How will Rocky stay alive and escape with the moeny?

Anything else you’d like to say about what made this movie a great thriller?

This is a great thriller because of all the different scenarios the protagonist encounters along her journey. First she has to remain quiet so she isn’t discovered by a blind man who just killed her lover. Then she has to help a kidnapped woman get free from the basement. Then she has to free herself from the pitch black basement with a killer shooting at her. Then once she is escapes from the house, she has to free herself from the jaws of a malevolent dog inside a car. And finally she has to try and kill the war vet after he drags her back into the house and escape before the police arrive. WOW!!!

    Aaron Weisblatt

I have written about 10 scripts.

I wrote a thriller I am producing and want to see how it stands up to the principles I will learn in this class.

My first film was nominated for an Oscar. I live in Santa Monica and I have been in the industry since graduating NYU in the 80’s. My latest feature doc is streaming on Amazon titled Land Of Little Rivers. And I think I have an old friend here from NYU – Hello Frank Fuller! Is that you? I’m a private pilot and have a really annoying dog named Vanna White who barks at everything.
