Adite’s Phone Pitch
What I learned: you have to give the producer more than one reason to be excited about your project and/or working with you.
Write out your phone pitch along with answers to the questions.
1. Tell us which of the four strategies you are going to use to open your pitch:
• Lead with credibility. I’m Adite and I am a produced screenwriter.
• Lead with a great title. I have a supernatural thriller titled Yogini.
• Lead with a strong business hook. I’m Adite and my supernatural thriller concept Yogini would appeal to audiences who loved Kantara.
• Lead with a High Concept. Hi, I’m Adite and my script is about a young mother who is faced with a deadly dilemma: can she take the risk of killing her child in order to save him from a vengeful Yogini.2. Give us your script for phone call pitches, like I did above.
Hi, I’m Adite and I’m a produced screenwriter. I have a supernatural thriller titled Yogini.
Imagine a forest ranger’s wife caught in a life-or-death struggle: to save her child from a vengeful Yogini, she must perform dangerous Tantrik rituals that could either save or doom her child. Will she risk everything for a chance at life?
3. Give us a one or two sentence answer to the questions a producer may ask:
• What’s the budget range? 15-20 million
• Who do you see in the main roles? I can see how Radhika Apte or Bhumi Pednekar would be ideal for the protagonist’s role.
• How many pages is the script? 100 pages
• Who else has seen this? I’m in the process of pitching it to production companies.
• Why do you think this fits our company? I loved the movie xxx that you made in this genre which had a wonderful balance of vfx and powerful story telling. My script has the unique combination of thrilling action scenes, powerful emotions and a rarely seen exploration of the Tantric practices of Yogini worship.• How does the movie end? On the new moon night, the Yogini’s appearance coincides with a deadly poacher attack during which the ranger and his team are overpowered. The ranger’s wife must battle both the armed poachers and the Yogini’s wrath to save her child.

Adite’s Pitch Fest Pitch
What I learned: Pitching a story is all about establishing your credibility and engaging the listener with a pithy version of your story.
1. Tell us your credibility.
I’m an author of six books and a produced screenwriter.
2. Tell us your genre and title.
Genre: Supernatural Thriller
Title: Yogini3. What is your one or two sentence hook?
As deadly armed poachers run amuck, a forest ranger’s wife confronts a vengeful Yogini. Can the Tantric rituals that killed her mother protect her baby?
4. Please give your one or two sentence answer to each of these questions:
• What is the budget range? 20 million
• What actors do you like for the lead roles? (Xyz, Indian actors)
• Give me the acts of the story.
Act 1: Devyani, a young mother, who is suffering from post-partum depression moves into an eerie decrepit house with her forest ranger husband Jeet and their baby in a remote forest. She is warned by a local villager that she should clear out before the new moon night or face the wrath of the Yogini on whose sacred grounds the house is built. Carcasses of dead animals, blood smeared Tantric symbols and weird goings-on cause Devyani immense trauma and she very nearly throttles her own child.
Act 2: Jeet is having a tough time hunting down poachers. His informer is killed and the villagers refuse to help him, as they believe that the Yogini is behind the informer’s death. Devyani is forced to tap into her own long forgotten Tantric skills even though she fears that her own life and that of her child is at extreme risk and they might end up dead like her mother who was a Tantric priestess.
• How does it end? (setup / payoff)
On the rainy new moon night Jeet has to leave them unprotected to fetch the doctor for their sick child. The poachers close in and the Yogini shows makes her fearsome appearance. Jeet is hurt in the showdown with the poachers and Devyani uses her Tantric skills to appease the Yogini who in turn becomes a saviour of her child and turns her wrath on the poachers.
• Credibility questions What have you done?
I recently sold the rights to one of my books to a production company.

Adite’s Query Letter
What I learned: A query letter should have only the broad strokes of the story. The purpose is to hook them into reading the script.
Can a mother risk killing her child in order to save him?
Devyani, battling post-partum depression, moves into an eerie decrepit old house with her forest ranger husband Jeet in the forests of Simlipur. Even before they can settle in, she is warned by a local villager to clear out before the night of the new moon or face the wrath of the Yogini on whose sacred grounds the house is built.
The signs escalate. Carcasses of dead animals, blood smeared Tantrik symbols and a shape-shifting old woman cause even more trauma for Devyani and she nearly throttles her own baby.
Meanwhile, Jeet hunts down deadly poachers with his ragtag team of forest officers. When one of his tribal informers is found pinned to a tree with his own arrows, the villagers fear the Yogini’s wrath and refuse to help him.
On the rainy new moon night, when Jeet races to fetch a doctor for their sick child, the Yogini makes her appearance. Devyani taps into her long forgotten Tantric skills. As the poachers close in, she faces a life-and-death choice. The Tantric rituals had killed her mother but what if it’s the only way to save her baby? There is only one to know for sure – by doing them herself.
This is a supernatural thriller like (comp movie name) filled with high-stakes action, and the unique synergy of mysticism and motherhood.

Adite's High Concept/Elevator Pitch
What I learned: By using hooks I refined my original pitch. And I could rework the AI options and pare down my pitch to about 25 words.
1. To find your main hook, give us what is most unique about your lead character’s journey from a big picture perspective.
A forest ranger’s wife has to rely on her forgotten Tantric skills to save her child from a wrathful supernatural being even while battling gun-wielding poachers.
2. How can you tell it in the most interesting way possible?
• Dilemma – Tantric rituals killed her mother. But what if it’s the only thing that can save her child from a wrathful Yogini.
• Main Conflict – Trapped in a house built on sacred grounds, a mother has to save her child from gun wielding poachers outside and a vengeful Yogini who wants her family out.
• What’s at stake? – A mother has to rely on her long forgotten Tantric skills to save her baby from a shape-shifting Yogini even while battling gun-wielding poachers.
• Goal/Unique Opposition – How do you save your baby from the wrath of a vengeful Yogini while battling gun-wielding poachers?3. Using the 10 Components of Marketability, what is your Elevator Pitch?
A forest ranger’s wife must save her child from a wrathful Yogini even as she is trapped in a house with gun wielding poachers outside.
4. After you answer questions 1 – 3, use AI to brainstorm other possible ways to generate a High Concept for your project.
I reworked some of the AI options and arrived at this:
As deadly armed poachers run amuck, a forest ranger’s wife confronts a vengeful Yogini. Can the Tantric rituals that killed her mother protect her baby?

Adite's Synopsis Hooks
What I learned: Stick to the hooks to write the synopsis of your story.
Synopsis:
Sleep deprived Devyani is going through post-partum depression and desperately needs a break. She seems to catch it when her fresh-off-training forest ranger husband Jeet is posted to picture-perfect Simlipur.
But they are in for a shock. The house that has been allotted to them is old and decrepit. Even before they can settle in, a creepy old woman warns her to clear out before the night of the new moon or face the wrath of the Yogini on whose sacred grounds the house is built.
Carcasses of dead animals, blood smeared Tantrik symbols in the sink hole and an old woman who shape shifts into a boar cause even more mental stress for Devyani. In the throes of a nightmare she almost throttles her own baby who is saved by Jeet.
Is this another manifestation of the Yogini’s wrath? Or can she tap into her long forgotten Tantric skills which she learned from her Tantric priestess mother who was falsely accused of having sacrificed and drunk the blood of a human child for one of her rituals.
Meanwhile, Jeet is thrown into the deep end when he finds that his ragtag team of forest officers has neither the skills nor the weapons needed to deal with poachers who are causing mayhem. When one of his tribal informers is found pinned to a tree with his own arrows, the villagers fear the Yogini’s wrath and refuse to help Jeet track down the poachers. On the rainy night of the New Moon, Jeet faces a dilemma – fetch a doctor for their sick child and leave Devyani and the child unprotected from poachers?
As she prepares for the Yogini to show up, Devyani is caught between two powerful antagonistic forces. On one side are gun-wielding poachers who will kill her baby and on the other, there is a wrathful Yogini who will destroy her and her child. Tantric rituals killed her mother. But what if it’s the only thing that can save her child? There is only one to know for sure – by doing them herself.
This is a supernatural thriller like (comp movie name) filled with high-stakes action, and the unique synergy of mysticism and motherhood.

Adite's 10 Most Interesting Things
What I learned: by pulling out the most interesting bits, I could actually see how they can be further improved.
A. What is most unique about your villain and hero?
Protagonist – A young mother suffering from post-partum depression who had as a child learnt the dark arts from her Tantric mother.
Villain 1 – Yogini (a supernatural being) A shape shifter who can adopt the form of any living/dead being. Reversal – she is a protector and guardian rather than a predator.
Villain 2 – Dr. Rana – who hides behind the façade of a healer but is the real predator who has links with poachers.
Major hook of opening scene:
A child watches her mother perform a Tantric ritual.
Turning points:
Arrival at the decrepit house set in a beautiful location. Only to discover that the house is set on a Yogini’s grounds. The Old woman’s warning before she turns into a boar. Bloody chicken heads on the veranda, tantric symbols in the sink hole.
Devyani’s nightmare causes her to nearly throttle her own baby.
Shambhu’s death (pinned to a tree by his own arrows) causes the villagers to stop supporting Jeet’s anti-poacher campaign.
On new moon’s night Yogini reveals herself in her full shapeshifting goddess/boar form. This leads Devyani to figure out what the Yogini wants.
Emotional dilemma?
For Devyani – Tantric rituals killed her mother and it could now kill her child. But what if it’s the only thing that can save her child?Major Twists
The Yogini turns into a protector.
Character betrayals
Dr. Rana is the one who has been helping the poachers.
Any big surprises?
Yogini shape-shifts into Devyani’s deceased mother and helps Devyani to find closure.

Adite Producer/Manager
What I learned: Producers need to be hooked with why investing in this project would make business sense to them. Managers have to be presented with reasons why they should invest in me as a writer.
1. How will you present yourself and your project to the producer?
Yogini is a supernatural thriller that is not simply an action film with supernatural elements but packs a powerful emotional punch. It’s about a mother who fights an internal and external battle to save her infant child. It would appeal to audiences who are looking for (comparable movie)-like stories. An A-list actor like XYZ would love to play a protagonist who revives her inner Tantric priestess and fights off predatory poachers to save her child. I have presented some intriguing aspects of the extremely secretive world of Tantrics in a visually exciting way in this script. VFX and never-seen-before locations in north-east India would add to the overall visual appeal, while keeping the budget to about roughly Rs xx million.
2. How will you present yourself to a manager
As a writer of both novels and screenplays, I am comfortable with words and visuals. For this script I have done extensive research on the cult of Yoginis and have presented some never seen before aspects of this extremely secretive world in a visually exciting way. The mix of an environmental theme, thrilling action scenes and powerful emotions would appeal to the modern audience even while exploring supernatural beings such as Yoginis. I am happy to make necessary changes to make the script stronger. Apart from this script I also have two others – a mature rom-com and a Bollywood musical romantic drama.

Adite’s Marketable Components
What I learned: Instead of focusing on too many components, one should pick a couple that are likely to make the story attractive to producers and show how your story can fulfill them.
Pick one or two components and tell us how your script already fulfills them AND how you might highlight these two in order to elevate the pitch.
1. Tell us your current logline.
When a forest ranger moves into a decrepit old house that is set on sacred grounds, his wife is forced to harness her long forgotten Tantric skills to confront the wrath of a powerful supernatural being (Yogini) even as their child is targeted by ruthless poachers.2. Look through the 10 Components of Marketability and pick one or two that have the most potential for selling this script.
• A. Unique
• B. Great Title
• C. True.
• D. Timely — connected to some major trend or event. –
• E. It’s a first. – about Tantric practices
• F. Ultimate – Saving her child not just from poachers but from a supernatural being.
• G. Wide audience appeal. – there is a great deal of interest in supernatural stories and traditional folklore following the success of movies like Kantara.
• H. Adapted from a popular book.
• I. Similarity to a box-office success. – It is similar to a huge hit in a similar genre.
• J. A great role for a bankable actor. – the lead role would appeal to several lead actresses.2. Do a quick brainstorm session about ways to elevate those two components for this script and tell us how you might pitch the script through the two components.
Have decided to focus on 2 components – F and I
A mother with an infant child is trapped in a house that is built on sacred grounds. She is caught between two powerful antagonistic forces. On one side are gun-wielding poachers who will kill her baby and on the other there is a wrathful supernatural being who will destroy her and her child unless they move out of the being’s sacred grounds.
The mother’s arc is that she goes from one who disowns her Tantric powers to one who learns how to use them to protect her baby.
The story is a supernatural thriller like Kantara and is filled with high-stakes action, and the unique synergy of mysticism and motherhood.-

Adite’s Project and Market
“What I learned today is… The key is to make your story attractive to the producer. So the pitch has to be tailored to meet his/her needs.
1. Give us your Genre, Title, and Concept.
Genre: Supernatural Thriller
Title: Yogini
Concept: When a forest ranger moves into a decrepit old house that is set on sacred grounds, his wife is forced to harness her long forgotten Tantric skills to confront the wrath of a powerful supernatural being (Yogini) even as their child is targeted by ruthless poachers.2. In one or two sentences, tell us what you think is most attractive about your story.
The story is relevant to our age – that we all have inner strengths that we can harness to bring about a balance in the world. It blends together high stakes action, appealing locations, emotional power and the unique synergy of mysticism and motherhood.
3. Tell us which you will target FIRST — managers, producers, or actor’s production company — and why you picked that target.
Female actors who own production companies (in India) as Indian actresses are starved for meaty roles.

Hi Everyone. Happy to be doing yet another SU class. Yay. I'm Adite Banerjie from India. I have written multiple scripts, 3 romance novels which were traditionally published, 3 more that were self-published. One of my books recently got optioned by a production house in Mumbai. Many of my scripts need a thorough rewrite but usually I end up working on new projects. However I am taking this class so that I can polish at least 3-4 scripts and make them pitch-worthy. I'm hoping to make new connections with these pitches. My mantra is going to be: there is no such thing as rejection! 😁

Hi Tita! Love your concept. There is a lot going on in it which adds to the love story. A suggestion: for the climax you could have something that really happened when a lot of Afghans were left behind on the tarmac and the flight takes off as the Taliban starts firing at them. You could have the lovers trying to scramble on to the plane even as the Taliban is randomly firing and it seems like Zari might get left behind but ultimately she manages to get on with the Taliban raining bullets on the aircraft.

Hi Everyone.
I’m Adite Banerjie, screenwriter and author from New Delhi/Mumbai. Yeah, in case that sounds strange, it’s coz I have started dividing my time between the two cities. Last year, I decided that I need to be “seen” in the city where movies are made. And guess what, it’s already giving my screenwriting a whole new focus. Networking is a two way thing and it always helps to make connections, right? So, I’m walking the talk, so to speak. I have written a handful of scripts. One of my first scripts even made it as a semi-finalist in the Nicholl’s. I have also written several books (mostly in the romance space). The rights to my rom-thriller have been bought by a Mumbai based prodco and will (hopefully soon) be broadcast on an OTT channel as a TV series. I’m looking forward to sharpening my rom-com skills in this class and creating some awesome feel good scripts along with you all. Cheers. -

Adite’s Character Descriptions
What I learned: I can quickly create interesting character descriptions by focusing on key traits and elements from the BW Framework profile and combining some of the most intriguing parts.
Characters
Simone Mehta, a brilliant banker and fiercely protective single mom, faces a chilling conundrum as a routine fund transfer gets entangled with the abduction of her 10 year old daughter. She is thrust into the perilous realm of tech-savvy kidnappers linked to cryptocurrency. As financial investigators close in, Simone initiates her own covert inquiry into the world of cyber mercenaries, forging unexpected alliances, in a relentless pursuit to rescue her daughter. Her perilous journey not only unravels a dark conspiracy that threatens to destroy the banking system, but also exposes shocking secrets about her own family’s involvement. Her quest could turn out to be a huge gamble leading to both her imprisonment and the endangerment of her child.
Jai Arora, an uncompromising police officer, has been sidelined in his career due to his unyielding commitment to truth. Haunted by a profound sense of failure, he carries the weight of an unfulfilled promise to his father—that he would protect his younger brother, Kunal. When tasked with investigating the enigmatic banker Simone, he discovers a personal connection to the case—Kunal’s unresolved disappearance. As he secretly assists Simone in her illegal operations to rescue her daughter, his internal struggle intensifies. Torn between loyalty to the truth, his job and his growing attraction for Simone, he risks exposure to his superiors who may hold the key to his brother’s disappearance.
Maddy, a genius cryptocurrency entrepreneur with a twisted sense of justice, hides behind a philanthropic facade to orchestrate a criminal network of tech-savvy kidnappers. Betrayed and sent to prison by a former partner, Maddy seeks revenge on society by exploiting bright students as cyber mercenaries. Unknown to Simone, her father was one of those who had betrayed Maddy and she is unwittingly entangled in Maddy’s vengeful game. As Maddy’s genius unfolds in a relentless pursuit of payback, the cracks in his malevolent empire threaten not only the kidnapped victims but also the very foundation of the banking system he aims to destroy.
Bella, a scorned financial expert, is haunted by a traumatic exit from the bank she once worked in with Simone, her competitive rival and former friend. Bella, an orphan who seeks respect, allies with Maddy, a genius in cryptocurrency with questionable morals. Entangled in Maddy’s unholy activities and driven by a misguided belief that Simone orchestrated her downfall, Bella’s quest for revenge unveils a web of dark secrets and moral dilemmas that threaten not only Simone’s ruin but force Bella to confront the deadly consequences of her own actions.

Adite is ready for Feedback!
What I learned: The Framework needs to be highly engaging (still a work in progress), precise, and easily accessible when writing.
Breakthroughs: The major breakthroughs I have had through this module: a) AI is a useful tool, and needs to be used to clarify thoughts, “after” I have done my own brainstorming b) going through the BW Framework a few times has helped me fine-tune my story further.
Note: Looking forward to feedback and I’m happy to return the favor – please email me at adite.screenwriter@gmail.com. Thanks. -

Assignment 2
What I learned: You need two or more mysteries going on to keep your audience engaged. Besides generating intrigue, it provides rich material for character complications to play with.

Adite’s Intriguing Characters
What I learned: Creating intriguing characters is at the heart of
creating a bingeworthy show. The deeper I dug into the characters’
motivations, secrets, etc., the more ideas I got for
scenes/conflicts/situations/character relationships, etc. The AI prompts
throw up a variety of options, which I can further improve and then do
some mixing and matching in order to create complex characters. This is
a fun way to develop characters.
Assignment 1Offred (The Handmaid’s Tale)
Role: Protagonist. She is a Handmaid who is assigned to the Waterfords and is determined to survive the ordeal.
Hidden agenda: she is looking for a way out.
Conspiracy: With her friend Moira, to escape. But while Moira manages to board the train, she doesn’t.
Secrets: She finds a closet with a message in Latin. It was written by the earlier handmaid who lived there and acts as a motivating message to June (don’t let them grind you down).Deception: She is deceiving the Waterfords by pretending to be meek and obedient. She even deceives the Commander who tells her about the earlier Handmaid and that she’d killed herself.
Wound: Her husband was killed and her daughter was captured.
Assignment 2
Inner Circle of Characters – Ransom Code
Simone Mehta
Role: Protagonist. Simone is a banker who finds out that a fund transfer that was approved by her has gone into the account of a shadowy group. She is now under police investigation even as her daughter is kidnapped.
Hidden Agendas: Wants to get back her daughter and restore her own credibility without police involvement. She hid crucial info from Bella (when they were colleagues) which made their supervisor think Bella was not serious about her work.
Competition: Simone is competitive by nature. With Bella (who is, unknown to Simone, in the enemy’s camp). With Amish as she wants to be in charge of any new info that comes to light regarding the investigation.
Conspiracy: With Amish to investigate the kidnappers’ ring. With Fareed (the financial journalist) to make sure that the media is fed with the right information at the right time. With Sameer Bhatia, a young hacker, whom she plants in the criminal organization.
Secrets: Her father is suffering from a terminal illness which has put her under tremendous financial constraints, causing her to make some unethical financial transactions. Hiding from her ex husband Ishan the fact that she was pregnant when they got divorced. Simone needs to hide the truth about her daughter Ria from Ishan, Amish and Fareed. Because it would ruin Amish’s career and Fareed might be tempted to publish this ‘scoop’ (Simone had virtually kidnapped Ishan’s unborn daughter).
Deceptions: her financial transactions; her dealings with a billionaire client; hiding this from Amish with whom she is collaborating to uncover Maddy’s activities, misleads the police and sends them off on a wrong track.Wound: Fear of losing her daughter.
Secret identity: she is ex-wife of Ishan Dev, one of the country’s top industrialists.Amish Arora
Role: Investigating police officer turned ally of Simone
Hidden Agenda: He has unfinished business related to the closed investigation of his brother’s disappearance. He plans to settle that matter while dealing with the current crisis.
Competition: he has his own working style which puts him at loggerheads with other police officers and Simone
Conspiracy: With Simone in order to trap the kidnappers; with Sameer Bhatia, a young hacker, whom he helps plant in the criminal organization.
Secrets: He will betray Simone in order to save his brother.
SR Madhavan or Maddy
Role: Maddy specializes in orchestrating high-stakes kidnappings for ransom and these are routed through the cryptocurrency world.Hidden Agenda: To destroy the banking system.
Conspiracy: With Bella; with Viren Shah, with university professors.
Secrets: He is a shadowy figure who operates with anonymity. Maddy’s understanding of cryptocurrency and encryption allows him to create a complex system that ensures Simone’s every move is tracked. He can keep tabs on her while keeping his own identity and operations hidden. Very few people have met him and he has a different ‘mask’ that he presents to each of them.
Deception: he portrays himself as a philanthropist-entrepreneur but runs his criminal network by recruiting brilliant students who are in need of money.
Maddy is highly skilled at erasing digital footprints and ensuring that his operations remain untraceable. This ability makes it difficult for law enforcement to gather evidence against him.Wound: he was betrayed by his friend with whom he had developed a revolutionary algorithm in the field of cyber security. This friend sold the technology to a criminal network, made money off it and Maddy was sent to prison. Maddy is driven by a sense of revenge against society at large.
Secret identity: he hides behind his philanthropist facade.

What I learned: Empathy for the characters is more important than likeability; every episode needs to have two or more layers that helps the audience to find out more about the world it is set in. This helps to set up challenges for the main characters and further enhance their uniqueness.
Big Picture Hooks:
In a future, dystopian, religion-based world, June aka Offred, is a Handmaid or a baby producing slave for one of the leaders of a commune and his barren wife. The commune’s guards captured her after killing her husband and taking away her child. Now she needs to find her child.Intriguing Characters:
June/Offred has lost everything and is being forced into procreating a child for her employer. In a world where women like her have no voice she will do anything to get back her child.
Empathy/Distress
She has been captured, her husband has been killed, her child was taken away, she is forced into sex with her employer, she has no rights to speak of. Someone (she doesn’t know who) is spying on her. She is stuck in a hostile world and all her near and dear ones are dead or missing.
Layers/Open Loops
Layers:
Janine, a rebellious girl is punished for disobeying -her eye is plucked out and she is transformed completely into a submissive follower.
Her friend Moira who tells her to follow the rules or else she will be sent to the colonies / Moira herself was sent to the colonies (what did she do?)
The Commander’s Driver – is he Offred’s potential friend? Or a spy?Ofgden who initially spies on her, later becomes an ally (she tells her there is a spy in the house)
The commune’s rules also provide insights into the unique world the story is set in – creating layers and causing more distress/challenges for the characters.
– what happens to those who don’t obey (set up by showing the wall of people who have been hanged)
– when a woman is raped, it is her fault, unless the rapist has raped a pregnant handmaid of one of the leaders– the barren wife being forced to be present when her husband has sex with the handmaid.
Open Loops: Will she be able to find her child? How? Who is spying on her? Can she trust anyone? What will happen to her if the Commander finds out?
Inviting Obsession
How will Offred find her daughter? What will happen to her if the Commander finds out? Who is spying on her? Will she meet the same fate as Moira if they find out? What is the Driver’s intention – is he a friend or spy?

Thanks, Sunil. Looking forward. 🙂

Hey everyone *big wave* Nice to see some familiar names here. I am a ProSeries 18 alum (yeah, it seems like aeons ago) and have done a bunch of SU classes, including Thriller, Fresh and Edgy, Contained Scripts, and more. I have 5 novels, one award winning short film and a TV show on Indian culture and cuisine (it’s currently being shot) to my name. One of my books was recently optioned by a prod co in Mumbai and I’ve been signed up by them to adapt it into a TV series. So, I’m very excited to learn binge worthy techniques and apply some AI magic to them as well. Cheers, Adite

Adite writes great hope/fear
What I learned: This is a great way to ramp up emotional engagement with the characters.
Act 1
Restricting: Unlivable conditions, spooky, isolated.
Hope: Forest officer tells his wife it’s just a temporary arrangement.
Helpless: No way to get help for her sick child.
Hope: she finds some herbs with which she makes a soothing concoction for the child.
Fear: Unknown to her, the Poacher escapes. -
Adite’s 4 act structure
What I learned: Keeping the focus on the key conflict (though there could be multiple minor conflicts going on in the story) helps build a solid structure.
-
Adite’s Delivering Multiple Layers
What I learned: This is an amazing process that helps me build multiple layers on the plot, characters and location levels.
Layers I have chosen
Characters:
Surface Level: Protag (Wife) is an ordinary woman who is scared of supernatural elements.
Beneath that: She is the daughter of an ostracized Tantric priest and she knows the dark arts.
How Revealed: she knows the rituals and practices that need to be performed / uses her knowledge to trap and kill the Killer.Location:
Surface Layer: the isolated house on the edge of the lake
Beneath that: It is built on the ruins of an ancient temple
How Revealed: During the new moon night Protag experiences a supernatural moment. -
Adite’s Character Journeys
What I learned: Working out the broad strokes of the characters’ journey makes it easier to figure out how the plot and characters’ actions will intersect to form a compelling storyline.
Here’s the basic journey for my Protagonist:
Forest Officer’s Wife
Beginning: She and her baby have just joined her husband at the remote location where he’s posted on a new work assignment. Discovers that their house is located on sacred land and according to local people whoever lives there, dies. Can’t leave the place as the husband is called away on urgent work and the incessant rain doesn’t help as she is virtually marooned.
Midpoint: A series of bizarre incidents happen making it obvious that there is a supernatural force at work.
Turning point 2: A Poacher is on the prowl. The Husband arrives at the house to rescue her but is shot at by the poacher who wants to kill him.
Dilemma: Can they escape before the Killer strikes again or will the supernatural force get to them first?
3rd Act Climax: A gun fight takes place, the husband is grievously injured and is bleeding out, the natural and supernatural elements overwhelm her but she finds the courage to go on or else her baby will die.
Ending: She survives the ordeal, kills the Poacher, the Curse of the Goddess is broken and her Husband survives.-

Adite’s Character Depth
What I learned: dig deep into your characters to uncover an intriguing storyline.
Internal Character Depth:
1. Forest Officer:
Motivation: committed to his job as he dreads ending up like his father who could never hold a job.
Dilemma: Breaking the poachers ring vs protecting his family.
Hidden agenda: He’s not told his wife about the dangers involved in his new job.2. Wife
Motivation: family is top priority
Wound: Her sister’s drowning accident.
Secret: She believes in and is terrified of ghosts.
Subtext: That she will have to pay a price for not saving her sister.3. Criminal
Motivation: His relatives have been arrested for poaching. He’s fighting for his way of life
Conspiracy: Has a deal going with some corrupt forest officials who want the new Forest Officer out of the way.
Layers: the corrupt officials are using the criminal to meet their own ends.Character to Character:
Conflict: between the Forest Officer and his Wife about the place where they are staying and his new job; between Criminal and forest Officer; between the Forest Officer and his bosses on tackling the poaching issue.
Intrigue: what’s going on with the supernatural/paranormal activity…the legend about the curse of the goddess… -
Adite’s Right Characters
What I learned doing this assignment: Starting with a hook first makes it easier to create the ‘right characters’ for the story.
1. Concept Hook and Contained Setting:
A forest officer’s wife is alone with her sick infant in an old haunted house that they have recently moved into. A criminal with revenge on his mind is on the prowl.
Contained setting: an isolated haunted house on the edge of a lake as it pours relentlessly, virtually cutting it off from help.
2. How the characters will uniquely fit with the hook:
a) Forest Officer is away on a job. His earlier actions have exposed his family to a dangerous criminal.
b) Wife is alone, scared, emotionally vulnerable, but will do anything to protect her baby.
c) A sick toddler
d) Criminal – a forest dweller whose poaching business has been wrecked by the forest officer and will not stop till he has abducted the child to demand a huge ransom.
e) Ghost – the ghost who haunts the house.
f) Rain – makes the situation worse and prevents the Forest officer from getting help for his family.3. How does each character enhance/cause the conflict
a) Forest officer is called to deal with a work situation and leaves vulnerable wife alone with a sick baby. His assistant is supposed to be with her but he can’t make it because of the rain.b) Her fear of ghosts and the surreal environment makes her even more anxious even as she is dealing with a sick child.
c) Criminal’s actions rattle her and she locks herself in the attic where she encounters the ghost.
d) Child’s crying alerts the criminal and in her anxiety she drops her phone in the water (and ruins it) which is beginning to seep inside the house, cutting herself off from help totally.
e) Wife’s past involving her sister’s death bring things to a head.4. What makes these characters right for this story?
The combination of setting, hook and the paranormal angle enhances the characters’ fears and motivation and raises the stakes for all.

Adite’s Great Hook!
This lesson has been quite challenging and I’m still brainstorming the hooks for my ideas. Doesn’t help that I have come down with ‘flu! 🙄 But these are great exercises and I shall come back to them after working on the next lesson (right characters) to see if that generates more interesting hooks. After all, a great hook and right characters are interlinked. -
Adite’s Assignment
What I learned doing this assignment: Irrespective of Covid, it’s always good to have a high concept script that can be developed with the contained model.
Assignment Part 1: After looking through the ideas I had listed, a couple of them definitely fit the “contained model” bill; can be pitched in a couple of sentences and have something unique about them.
Assignment Part 2:Title: An American Pickle
How it was done:
A. People: Two main characters played by the same actor and a ton of secondary characters.
B. Stunts: Though not too many, these mostly involved the type where someone lands a punch on another or drops into a vat of brine, or cops chasing the guy, etc.
C. Extras: A huge number of extras, including people on the street, reporters, factory workers, hospital staff, audience at a press conference, etc.
D. Wardrobe: No special outfits, except for a couple of police uniforms
E. Hair and Makeup: Nothing special.
F. Kids and Animals: rats! (though I think these were CGI)
G. Quarantine: Shot pre-CovidCovid Guidelines Version:
A. People: Casting the two lead characters to be played by the same actor (Seth Rogen) is in fact a very Covid-guideline-friendly move. The number of secondary characters can be drastically cut down. The introduction scene where Herschel and Sarah are introduced could be reworked. In fact the whole sequence could be done in animation or like a cartoon strip. If Ben were to be the narrator — since he is an app designer — this would work well with the storyline too. That would also cut out the whole additional cost of building the village where Herschel and Sarah used to live a 100 years ago.
B. Stunts: can be easily cut down.
C. Extras: can be minimised.
D. Kids and Extras: the rats are important! And CGI rats would work.
E. Hair and makeup: As isF. Wardrobe: As is.
G. Quarantine: Could be easily achieved. -
Hello fellow writers. I’m excited to start on a new class 😀

Hey Susan. Would be great to exchange notes and feedback. My email id is: adite.screenwriter@gmail.com.
I think all the lessons have been uploaded – I’m happy with that as there is no pressure to finish “homework”. LOL.
Cheers,

Hi Donna. No new posts or video after Lesson 6. Still waiting for the next lesson.

Spilling coffee will scald her…that’s guaranteed to kill any attraction! 😁

Hi Tita. I replied to your post and it disappeared. So posting again…
Love your concept and the bigger story in which the romance is set. Re: the climax, I have a suggestion which you may like to consider…You could have the two lovers trying to board the last flight out. The Taliban are trying to stop them and they are spraying bullets all around. Many of the Afghans who are trying to get on to the plane are shot dead. Seems like Zari is in grave danger. But at the last moment she gets on and the aircraft leaves. (an incident like this actually happened…you could do a google search). -
Hi Manu… let’s catch up sometime when you are in Delhi next. 🙂
-
Absolutely right, Lynn. And it's getting even more vibrant with movies made in Hyderabad becoming huge international blockbusters – RRR is just one example. 🙂 I wrote a couple of Harlequin books too. You should try your hand at writing some scripts for the Indian market 🙂

Adite’s Plot and Character Layers
Assignment 1
The Handmaid’s Tale
Surface Plot: June is captured by the Guardians; her husband is shot dead and her child taken away. She becomes a ‘handmaid’ to Commander Waterfront and tries her best to survive and hopefully find out what happened to her daughter.
Plot layers:
Major Scheme Revealed – the handmaids are being used to procreate for the leaders whose wives are barren. And they are to be used as a commodity for trading.
Mystery revealed – Moira was not sent to the Colonies, instead she was sent to Jezebels;
Luke is alive.Character Layers:
Secret identity: Nick is an Eye who is looking out for June/Offred
Hidden relationships/conspiracies : Ofglen is part of the resistance.
Character intrigue: Moira abandons June/Offred but later shifts her loyalties back to June.Assignment 2 (My story)
What I learned: Digging deeper between the plot and the characters creates linkages that support each other and makes for a more powerful story.
Plot Surface: A huge amount is transferred to a client which is supposedly pre-approved by Simone. It seems to be a technical glitch and as Simone and her colleagues try to figure out how it happened, Simone’s daughter Ria is kidnapped.
Layer 1: Simone receives video clip of Ria’s kidnapping.
Layer 2: Series of encrypted messages reveals the fund transfer was part of a meticulously executed plan which ends with Ria’s kidnapping.
Layer 3: Jai’s investigation reveals similar attacks on high-profile targets.
Layer 4: Simone (with Sameer’s help) uncovers a hidden pattern in the messages that leads to clues about Maddy’s involvement.
Layer 5: Simone’s past history with Ishan (and Maddy) is uncovered by Fareed.
Character Surface: Maddy is an entrepreneur and philanthropist
Layer 1: Maddy hides behind his philanthropic facade to get brilliant students to do unethical work for him.
Layer 2: He aims at bringing down the banking system and reshape financial world according to his vision.
Layer 3: He has created a billionaire’s club and is pitting one billionaire against another as part of his scheme.
Layer 4: Some of these billionaires have been handpicked because they are direct competitors of Ishan. Maddy’s links to Ishan go back a long way and by targeting Simone and Ria he is getting his revenge against him for the wrongs done to him.

The lesson is now showing on my dashboard! Yay! 🙂
-
@helen-roberts Hi Helen. The relationship map for the Billions example is not showing up. Could you please post the table. Thanks a bunch.
-
I think it may have some thing to do with the date that you signed up for the program.
