ASSIGNMENT 2: Ahnee’s Show Empathy/Distress
“What I learned doing this assignment is how there is so much going on, yet we are barely scratching the surface of what Main Character Rikki will end up going through
A. Undeserved misfortune.
– Rikki, Gabbi, and Arthurs parents met in drug rehab, were pregnant & married 4 months later
_ Mom was being abused and cheated on by pregnancy #2
– Kids were left to feel as if they were a burden, always in someones’ way
– Kids were sent away by mom to live with dad in New York, so she could get back on her feet
– Kids never felt loved or safe at home, rather quite thee opposite
– Kids grew to rely solely on one another; against all odds
– Rikki sexually abused in the woods behind her home on Tinker St. in New York at age 6…only by God’s love did she survive
– They learned a solid love for one another that was very dysfunctional, yet oh so loyal
– Both girls sexually abused outside of home as kids
– All 3 grow angry, rebellious, confused and alone
– Mom remarries and starts a new family w/a drug addict; has 2 new babies
– Dad’s girlfriend is mentally abusive to all 3 for 11 years
– Mom hands kids over to dad in extensive custody battle, when Rikki is 9…Rikki questions mom on her decision to do so?
B. External Character conflicts.
– Rikki is timid, walks w/head down, but fights in an instant…shocking those around her.
– Gabbi is hot headed and talks a lot of shit, but cares deeply for those close to her
– Rikki gets hit on a lot by neighborhood boys (because she is always out running the streets) and gains a horrible reputation, even though she is still a virgin
– The 3 of them throw ditching parties at their home weekly as dad is away at work, inviting that street mentality into their home and lives
– Teens are woken up at 4, 5am when dad returns home some school nights to be dragged out of bed aggressively because the chores were not done, only to go to school and not be able to concentrate or even think straight
– Gabbi is living with her boyfriend at 14 and pregnant by 15
—Arthur is arrested on a few counts and sent to Juvenile camps at age 13
— Even though they don’t come from a family background in gangs, they lean toward them because that’s what the streets of Pomona have to offered for a sense of belonging
C. Plot intruding on life.
– Rikki is released from Juvenile halls and girls homes after 2 years, has memories of Venice and Santa Monica where she is originally from, and memories from living in Woodstock New York…yet falls victim to the 5 mile radius she was raised in
– Arthur goes from Juvenile camps to Youth Authority Teen Prison Facilities
— Arthur is involved in a shoot out at thee Indian Hill Mall on Mother’s day 1994 and is air lifted to an emergency room in Huntington Beach…Rikki is 7 months pregnant and waits with mom, aunts, sister and dad in the waiting room, and she is the one visitor he asks to see…where he asks her to get alcohol wipes to clean his hands and fingers from any gun powder.
– Gabbi slangs dope as she mothers her 2 babies in the hood of Pomona
D. Moral dilemmas.
– Rikki is afraid to speak up, but fights in an instant; always wishing people would take the time to get to know her (because she knows that she is super cool somewhere in there!)
– Rikki is arrested at 14 sent to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall at 14 to serve the next year in Juvie and girls homes; but ends up doing 2 years and comes out very hopeful for a better life because she has spent time at church and learning a little bit about God.
– Gabbi gets welfare on top of slangin’ dope to care for her 2 kids at 16 years old
– Arthur violates his probation and gets deeper into gang life behind juvenile walls
– Rikki attends Nogales High School and quickly becomes a varsity track and cross country athlete
– Rikki graduates High School a year early and gets her 1st job at Pizza Hut in Pomona and gets pregnant from her boss within 3 months…Dad kicks Rikki out, so she moves in with guy she barely knows…becomes an instant stepmom of 2 boys (ages 2 & 3) and she is only 17 years old…Mmhhmm!!
– Rikki’s new boyfriend starts to show signs of jealousy of her siblings, which creates major drama for them. He treats her like a possession
– Arthur is released from his 2nd term of 3 years in Youth Authority only to return 30 days later, this time facing the death penalty on 4 counts of 1st degree murder
E. Forced decisions they’d never make.
– Rikki is in a relationship because she is having his baby, but her heart is far from him, yet this is the right thing to do…right?
– Arthur is arrested exactly one month from the day of his release, and his face is plastered on the front page of the LA Times, Local Newspapers, and all the local news BREAKING NEWS updates as the suspect in 4 murders
—Arthur is framed, yet lives by the street code and has this loyal heart about him where he will ride it out at any cost.
– Arthur asks his sisters the movie SET IT OFF at Blockbuster Video to come up with a plan, but Rikki shuts that idea down once she realizes it’s stupid
– Preliminary Trial begins and Arthur tells his sisters he ‘needs’ them to start stripping to pay for his lawyer
– Rikki begins to strip and gets physically sick the first time, but the day after her 21st Birthday she commits to stripping to help her brother pay for an attorney
– 6 months after Rikki begins stripping Gabbi joins in and starts dancing with her

Common Ground He and Gabbi are more outspoken and opinionated than Rikki, so they get into more trouble at home and at school and both become more outspoken and angry
Conflict His choice of friends conflict with her choice of friends, because of race which tends to create conflict between the two
History Tends to go to gabby less than to Rikki, so his bond with her is not at tight
Subtext Bratty little brother, but can always call on Gabbi for help if needed

LESSON 5 ASSIGNMENT 2
What I learned from this assignment is: That there is a lot of undoing in a characters life to unveil who they really are and why they are the way they are. No child sets out to be an outcast, a stripper or a prisoner.
RIKKEL:
A. Situational: Hopes to become a great human being, to speak up for what she wants / Fears she will never figure out how to be or do just that
B. Motivation: Wants to be her brothers savior and the best momma to her daughter, to be in a great relationship / Needs to feel worthy, to feel loved, accepted
C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion Afraid of what others think, insecure, unhappy / Public Mask: Confident, outgoing, happy
D. Weaknesses: Lack of education, feelings of not being good enough, in relationships because it’s what the other person wants in her, not what she wants (but because they think so highly of her, that’s enough for her)
E. Triggers: being picked on, seeing others being picked on, betrayal
F. Coping Mechanism: silence before violence, anger and aggression, alcohol
GABBI:
Situational: Hopes to have enough money to never need anything / Fears not being able to provide for her children or become like her mom
Motivation: Buying a better life and helping brother come home from jail / Needs to feel like she is contributing to her brothers freedom and making enough money to buy happinessC. Mask: Base Negative Emotion it is what it is mentality / Public Mask: Has her shit together, new furniture, apartments and cars on rotation, kids always G’d up in the newest gear and tennies
D. Weaknesses: She does not look beyond the NOW, or prepare for the futureE. Triggers: anyone that challenges her opinion or lifestyle
F. Coping Mechanism: it’s her way or the highway, and if you disagree with her she will tell you to leave
ARTHUR:
A. Situational: Hopes he is not charged for the 4 murders / Fears that he will get the death penalty and die in prison
B. Motivation: Wants the spotlight he is currently sitting under / Needs thee approval of those he looks up to
C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion victim himself being framed / Public Mask: A bad ass cholo who could care less, like this is all a joke
D. Weaknesses: not taking this case seriously and thinking he will get bailed out because he has a ‘hired’ lawyer, not a public defenderE. Triggers: authority figures, and those who speak down to him
F. Coping Mechanism: not giving a shit, he has been hurt by those closest to him, therefore no one will hurt him again

Assignment #2: IN SEARCH OF I AM
What I learned from doing this assignment is: That writing about real people is really hard because their path was not always pretty and it almost feels mean, like I am telling on them.
Rikki:
· Hidden agendas: Wants to be known and not just sit in the shadows of her siblings, yet at the same time her life seems to always revolve around them.
· Competition: Her true competition is the Rikki inside of her that will do anything for her siblings because that’s what makes her feel alive, loved and a part of something.
· Conspiracy: Asked to rob a bank to pay for a lawyer, considers it with Gabbi, but wisdom kicks in at the planning party and she reminds Gabbi that they’re moms now and can’t end up in jail with their brother…they need another plan.
· Secrets: At her little brothers request (almost a no choice, this has to be done to help!) she starts stripping at 21 to help hire a defense attorney because her brother is facing the death penalty and the preliminary hearing is already started.
Deception: To think she can make a dent in the overall attorney fees or that the lawyer they hired is even capable of a case of this magnitude. Also for her to think that the decision to start stripping will not have a dire ramification in the trajectory of her life.
· Wound: This is the perfect time where she feels unloved and alone, she does not even have to hide this new job because no one really seems to care about what’s beneath her surface of her life.
· Secret Identity: 125 lb. super cute Mexican American chick with fire orange hair and a gorgeous smile, who wears matching GAP overalls and ponytails with her 3 year old daughter by day but is a fierce, super sexy au natural sculpted body, very tan skin & takes no shit stripper by night. She actually finds more power in this identity than what she has ever known.
Gabbi:
Hidden agendas: To break out of the tomboy, tough girl persona she has walked in most of her life.
Competition: Her younger sister, Rikki, yet she is not even aware of it.
Conspiracy: Like a game of chess, she will take down anyone who gets in her way..
Secrets: Takes that hustle mindset to the strip club.
Deception: The love of money and power.
Wound: Raised to take care of little sister, resents her for it.
Secret Identity: Supermom by day, stripper by night. Trades in her dope selling side hustle and stripping becomes her way of means to support her 3 children.
Arthur:
Hidden agendas: To prove to those around him he is the shit, he is worth talking about, but inside hoping his innocence is found out in the courtroom.
Competition: The reporters in media, mayor and evil
Conspiracy: He is framed because he made the perfect target
Secrets: He knows who is behind the 4 murders
Deception: He believes this gang has his back
Wound: Wanting so bad to belong, to matter to those around him…this is where he takes a stand for loyalty
Secret Identity: His theme song was ‘All eyes on me’ by rapper TUPAC during this time and he is riding this media frenzy. He gets lost in the label placed on him.

What I learned in doing this assignment…
Is that it’s really hard to focus on or care about other characters because my favorite character is Serena and I am rooting for her already…AND for my own work, what I learned is that as I go through this writing process, ALOT will change, but for now I am just getting what I can on the paper…it is not perfect right now and THAT IS OKAY!!
As of now Serena seems to be the MC, everything is happening because of and around her sudden return. Her purpose is to put the past behind her in hopes that she can be seen differently.
Her past behavior gave her a reputation among those who know her best, and they are focusing on that, but we as the audience get to see her heart for her brother and her shame.
I’d say her having to accept and sit in the shame from what she did and having to keep it a secret in her small circle where they are holding it over her like a whipping device.
Well, she seems to be interested in Dan, but with the secret out, I am wondering if she will resort back to her old ways and see Nate again?***JOURNEY OF MY SHOW***
Rikki struggles with her identity most of her life and takes the audience on her journey of self discovery through the juvenile and adult judicial system, strip clubs, hospitals, once even a mental hospital where she has to stay for 6 days to be evaluated after an arrest, failed marriages, mothering children, homelessness, alcoholism…a true story of God’s love, protection and faithfulness and a woman’s strength, resilience and redemption.
Main Characters: Rikki, Gabbi and Arthur (Names subject to change) 3 siblings that were conceived by parents who met while being patients at The Camarillo rehabilitation Center for drug and alcohol problems in the early 70’s. But because it is a true story, each season will introduce key characters who played a major role in MC Rikki’s life that shaped her…whether they were good, bad or ugly. If not for the grace of God, the devils plan to kill, steal and destroy her life would of prevailed.
ROLE IN THE SHOW:
Rikki: MC who audience will go on the journey with.
Gabbi: She is Rikki’s older sister by 2 years who takes over the mom role when Rikki is just 3 years old.
Arthur: Rikki’s little brother by 15 months, who was one and a half when they were given to their father and moved from West Los Angeles to Woodstock, New York.
UNIQUE PURPOSE/EXPERTISE:
Rikki: She went from a sweet happy toddler to a shrinking violet in one year…like a chameleon she learned to take on many forms of herself for survival. Her purpose is to find herself underneath all the masks, costumes and identities she puts on.
Gabbi: Took on the mother role at 5 years old which gave her internal compass security in her and her alone. Her purpose is to let go of the reigns and trust that not everyone is out to get her.
Arthur: Baby brother who relies on his big sisters for love, belonging and acceptance. His purpose is to become his own self apart from his sisters always there to catch him.
INTRIGUE: WHAT IS THE SECRET BENETH THE SURFACE?
Rikki: Wants to be loved so bad but is treated badly by those closest to her so she ends up timid, insecure and voiceless…until backed in a corner, then you see the rage she had hidden deep within that even surprises her at times.
Gabbi: This girl was raised to fend for herself, she goes from playing with Cabbage Patch Kids to caring for her very own children. She is abused at home and becomes quick to fight in the streets. She gives up on herself and starts to fight for those around her. Putting herself last and hardening her heart in the process.
MORAL ISSUE: WHAT MORAL BOUNDARIES ARE THEY CROSSING?
Rikki: She continually puts others feelings and needs above her own, which in turn makes her feel unheard, unloved and worthless, sad and angry.
Gabbi: She is her own boss and no one can tell her what to do, and no ones advice or opinions matter but hers…
Arthur: Because no one sticks around long enough to love him well, he continues to gain acceptance from his sisters, not knowing they are just as lost as he is…they keep signing off on his bullshit, so he thinks he will beokay.
UNPREDICTABLE: WHAT WILL THEY DO NEXT?
Rikki: She will make bad choices that will lead her down years of trials and traumas, hurting those that get in her way.
Gabbi: She will mother 3 children by the time she is 20 and do whatever it takes to provide for them, whether that involves breaking the law or selling her soul in the process…no one will tell her what she can or can’t do.
Arthur: He will rebel around age 11 and be in the juvenile system by the age of 12 because at that point he does not care anymore and the abuse he has endured by those around him have made him a disrespectful and angry kid.
EMPATHETHIC: WHY DO WE CARE?
Rikki: You care because you have watched her go from a sweet innocent child with her whole life ahead of her into an insecure young gal who has been hurt and betrayed by those she gave her heart to and those closest to her…but she never loses hope in herself.
Gabbi: You care for the same reason, you have watched this sweet girls journey and how her Homelife made her hardened from within, and all you want is for her to get a freaking break. You want someone to come rescue her, to love her and to tell her everything is going to be okay.
Arthur: You care for the same reasons as his big sisters, but also because he got thee abuse the worst, you hear his cries and his screams as his father abuses him both physically and verbally, you watch as his innocence get stolen as his spirit is crushed time and time again.

“What I learned doing this assignment is…”
I would have to say that I began to look at the outer circles of characters in a different way and questioned whether they would either play a bigger role in the upcoming episodes, or quietly lose their air time? But, it also really made me question the layers of characters that I would be introducing in my pilot and who would make the cut for thee initial introduction…hmmm? But also for my own creating, whoa! There is so much tip toeing around these circles when trying to critique who fits where JUST FOR THE PILOT…

MAIN CHARACTER CIRCLE
Rikki: Mix of Irish, German, Spanish, Indian, Mexican. She is a beautiful 21 yr.old mom of 3 year old daughter. Still has no clue who she is, searching for the greatness she always felt inside, and questions the tough girl she’s grown up to be. Born in West LA, childhood years in Woodstock NY, then at 9 and into adolescent years in Pomona, CA. Has a heart of gold, an innocence about her but is a product of her environment and the dysfunction she grew up in.
Gabbi: (Rikki’s big sister) 23 yr old mom of 3, very independent, drug dealing and lowrider driving hustle type chick. Beautiful yet very ghetto behaving, harsh in her words, letting everyone know she does not give two f%#@s if they like it or not, very opinionated to the point of aggression. Same ethnicity as Rikki but hangs out with crip gangs so is mistaken for a mixed girl, has a tough girl attitude, fights a lot. Just like Rikki, this girl has a heart gold, takes care of everyone around her, but has been so hardened by her upbringing…
Arthur: (Rikki and Gabbi’s little brother)19, handsome olive skin toned young man, always told he was nothing, grew to be a lost child within himself. He rebels and turns to gang life in the streets of Pomona, CA. searching for acceptance because his only love comes from his sisters, they’re what he calls family. Becomes a product of their dysfunctional homelife and has been in jail since he was 13; just came home, only to go back a month later facing the death penalty on 4 new charges.

GOSSIP GIRL 5 Star Model
What I learned from this assignment is: that I have a lot to learn and I look forward to the next 5 months of dissecting the craft of writing for television!!
1. Big Picture Hooks: Told by the mysterious blog called GOSSIP GIRL, the story unfolds and tells the return of Serena. She has everyone on their toes and asking questions about why she left in the first place. If her life and friendships were so perfect why did she leave? Why did she come back, and why is her best friend secretly wishing she never did? What secrets does she have and who is keeping them with her.
2. Amazing and Intriguing Character: Meet Serena: she is obviously the talk of the town, beautiful, young, has a past, yet there is a mystery about her. She is sweet, smiles but is sad inside and hiding something. Blair: her so-called best friend…this girl has everyone thinking she is so confident in who she is and has everyone wanting to be her as long as Serena is not in the picture, because then Blair is jealous, unsure of herself and her self worth, needs to have full control of Nate, her boyfriend; and that brings us to Nate: He has been in a relationship with Blair since Kindergarten, but feels forced to be in it at this point, wanting out but having his wealthy family needing something from her wealthy family, so it has become more of a favor to his dad to stay with her, we can tell his heart is not in it and he is beginning to resent the whole situation. He is secretly in love with Serena and can’t forget their little secret which lead her to move to Connecticut. Then there is Dan: well rounded, very aware that he does not fit in with the wealthy kids, yet has confidence and a sense of humor, so much so that it makes him cute and intriguing. Raised by his dad who is dealing with his own heartbreak. Dan is protective over his little sister. And has secretly had a major crush on Serena for years, but always believing she was way out of his league. And there is Chuck…oh Chuck. A privileged little prick who preys on girls and thinks his parents money and status is enough to make him likeable, and cool; he is out for his own.
3. Empathy/Distress: Serena’s mom is more worried about her stays than Serena’s little brother who just attempted suicide (that’s what initially brought her back home after leaving to boarding school for a year) Although Blair seems to have tall, she is constantly being undermined by her superficial mother. Nate, just wants to be his own person and be with Serena, but feels like he has to line up with bis healthy parents and what they say to do. Dan’s mom left his mom and he can see and feel his dad’s pain and suffering which helps him become more aware of his little sister’s needs. Chuck has it all and only care about himself up to this point, and what he can take from people to satisfy his own selfish needs.
4. Layers/Open Loops: Why is Blair so jealous of Serena if they claim to be best friends? Who is behind the blog “Gossip Girl’? Does Serena have feelings for Nate? Will Dan win her heart? Will Chuck succeed at running her name through the mud? Will Blair get really dirty in her attack against Serena? How soon will everyone know about Dan and Serena’s mom and dad’s past?
5. Inviting Obsession: Both Dan and Serena have a sweet and gentle authenticity about them and it makes you fall in love with them, with their innocence…we want them together; I want them together. Blair’s issue with jealousy and control is so gross that we can’t wait to see her deal with what’s coming to her. Nate is a good guy and we hope he is able to stand up to his dad and become his own man! Chuck is out for himself, even acting as a predator at times so we look forward to watching him get a swift kick in thee ass

Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

Never written a script, just notebooks upon notebooks of show and movie ideas all still dancing around in my head.
I hope to have a finished product by the time this class ends in August 🙂
Ahnee is derived from ON’E, which is Hebrew for I AM, my mom used the English phonetics ‘Ah-Nee’ which I did not appreciate until in my 30’s, also meaning ‘graceful’ and ‘beautiful’. That’s her story, and I’ve ran with it my entire life.
And, my middle name is pronounced ‘Ri-Kell’ which I’ve explained my whole life because people pronounce it nickel (5 cent piece). I even spent a few years changing the spelling to ‘Rickelle’ to help people out…silly me.

I swear, it takes me days to do my assignments…between work, kids, fiancé, LIFE, home…just finished Lesson 3’s assignments and rushing to get kids from school, make them a quick meal and off to work I will go…what about you?

Hi Marie, Not sure if you got my email reply, but regarding the PRE-COURSE work, I was told we keep that for ourself…but do move forward and turn in Lesson 2 Assignment 2, which is a follow up question to our own personal PLOT for the show we are creating.
