Hi, I’m Harry,
I’ve written half a dozen feature scripts, some shorts and a couple of pilots. One feature was optioned.
This class will give me a structure to address the many rewrites I need to do. I feel I butterfly around too much and I am appreciative of Hal and Cheryl’s approach to script structure. The script I’m going to work on will have a whole new facelift here as a way of learning how to address this issue. Hoping it will help greatly in my interactions with producers.
When you visit London please come and have a drink on deck with me. I live on a boat in Richmond-upon-Thames. Cheers.

I’ve written about 8 scripts across several genres and had one optioned.
I hope to reinforce the impact of my scripts with this class.
Although I will not be actively contributing as I am ultra-busy at present, I will be paying attention so that I can apply the insights to my current script rewrite, and will go through the course at a later date in detail.
Unique? Well…. I live in a boat on the river Thames near Richmond (London). -

Hi all,
Harry here.
I’ve written six scripts to completion, with many embryos in the nest…. One script optioned.
I write a mixture of Film and TV and various genres.Currently I am half way through the WIM+AI course and started on the new Bingeworthy TV course, so I will be taking it slow on this comedy one. Please bear with me… I will likely not actually start this one for a while. Hoping to get more insights into writing comedy for film. My career includes time working in comedy department at BBC TV so I have to break away from that ‘British style’ too!
However, I’m happy to critique if you need someone’s fresh eyes!
Unique…? Well, I live on a boat on the river Thames. Not really unique – I met Simon Beaufoy (IMDB) when his houseboat was being repaired next to mine…Just before Slumdog Millionaire was released. I took it as a good omen!

The journey continues. Definitely liberating – but on reflection my scene seem short and snappy. Must be my Advertising background… Any film over 60seconds is huge!-

This is fun!
My mind is free-flowing
I do not feel intimidated by the blank page!
I use my beat-sheet outline from Module 4 as a rough guide which helps a lot. This was relatively quick. I still have a slight tendency to edit as I go, and have to stop myself so that there is a bigger change in draft 2.

These rules are truly liberating. Getting stuff down on paper (virtual, at least) is THE best way to avoid writer’s block. Fiddling around and changing things later will become a joy rather than a chore!I sped through the first scene in my script and it came out pretty good…(to me, that is)

First off, it is great to start writing!
Secondly, having a skeleton to hang the story on helps enormously with structure.
Thirdly, I can sense that I will be revisiting my skeleton outline frequently to adjust things, add things, change things and keep on track!-

My name is Harry Rankin. (For some reason I am registered by my given name, Anthony!)
I have written seven full scripts. Concepts for many more, and have one optioned.
I hope to re-work one of my earliest scripts in this class and bring it up to presentation standard.
I live on a boat on the river Thames in London. I’m hoping that it brings good omens as Simon Beaufoy did too, until he won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire…-

Role: (Protagonist or Antagonist)
What about this role would cause an actor to want to be known for it?
Ground-breaking role with great challenges for an actor.
What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in your story?
She is the one who, potentially, is going to become the mother of the second coming!
What are the most interesting actions the Lead could take in the script?
Becoming the down-to-earth solutions finder. She has the responsibility for plant growth, and neutralises an infestation running rampant. When the disaster happens it is she who saves the two of them.
How can you introduce this role in a way that could sell it to an actor?
By starting with an extreme scene where she dominates the screen. This may be an underwater rescue in a training tank, or similar.
What could be this character’s emotional range?
A reckless personality it the first act, general chaos in the second and third, and mature in the fourth.
What subtext can the actor play?
She is the only person aboard who knows she is pregnant from the start of the mission.
What’s the most interesting relationships this character can have?
Jon, of course, but also the medic who diagnoses the pregnancy before the take off.
How will this character’s unique voice be presented?
She could be almost hypnotic in her speech.
What could make this character special and unique?
A mixed-race, unlikely heroine, who survives when thrown it at the deep end.Lead Character Name: JON
Role: (Protagonist or Antagonist)
What about this role would cause an actor to want to be known for it?
He is the foil to Suli’s practical nature.
What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in your story?
As a father, he is totally unprepared. Researches the internet, but access is patchy.
What are the most interesting actions the Lead could take in the script?
Hiding, and losing, a condom in the love scene. Running around like a headless chicken when Suli goes into labour. “Wheres the hot water”?
How can you introduce this role in a way that could sell it to an actor?
He is going to go on an emotional journey to die for. Maybe he should be a carpenter in his spare time…
What could be this character’s emotional range
Cocky and trite to competent and funny
What subtext can the actor play?
He loves Suli deeply but doesn’t want that to be seen.
What’s the most interesting relationships this character can have?
Apart from with Suli, he might be tangled up in the politicians machinations?
How will this character’s unique voice be presented?
He employs ‘Dad Jokes’ at every turn. He is a quick-witted lampooner, along the lines of Jim Carey, which can get him into trouble.
What could make this character special and unique?
He is a bit of a child himself, but becomes the bedrock that humanity requires to stabilise the world.-

Movie Title: Bruce Almighty
Lead Character Name: Bruce Nolan (Jim Carey)Why would an actor WANT to be known for this role?
Who wouldn’t want to play God?!2. What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in the movie?
Two massive transformations.
Firstly (superficial) from relative insignificance to the position of ultimate power.
Secondly (fundamental) from selfish egotist to caring husband.3. What are the most interesting actions the Lead takes in the movie?
Constantly going against the obvious, ie. ignoring signs! (Superior Position) and the Hobo (God)
The Butt Monkey confrontation – ‘playing God’.
His actions have consequences, such as moving the moon for romance causing devastating floods in parts of the world.4. How is this character introduced that could sell it to an actor?
A reporter who only reports on the cheesy stories rather than hard news. ie Buffalo’s Biggest Cookie with Chariots of Fire jokes.
We immediately learn that everything he wants he doesn’t’t get. ie. Sports team looses, Dog pees, Car jam etc. All packed into first 10 pages.5. What is this character’s emotional range?
Naïve, Selfish, Jealous, desperate. Hurtful.
Ultimately acknowledging his strengths and caring about others and what really matters,6. What subtext can the actor play?
His actions when in the role of God are NOT God-like!
Selfishness underlying every action.
He has to die to become aware of his actions, ie. Grace, when he dies!7. What’s the most interesting relationships this character has?
Grace (girlfriend)
Evan Backstabber Baxter
TV station boss
Hobo8. How is this character’s unique voice presented?
OTT
Incredibly incisive, sharp wit.
Abjectly superior tone.9. What makes this character special and unique?
He is given the chance that nobody else has ever had. (As far as we know…)10. (Fill in a scene that shows the character fulfilling much of the Actor Attractor model.)
The montage scene when he assumes the power of God.
Music choice: ‘I’ve Got The Power’.
Actions he takes are all blatantly selfish. And yes, funny, because against type!-

To create scripts freely when working with producers, directors and cast, so to make award-winning work and create a lifestyle which is confident of financial freedom. What I learned from doing this assignment is: How locating a subtext plot will elevate the whole intrigue and give the audience layers to follow. I can see how in my case those layers will be many-fold.
Title: Genesis
Concept:: Against a backdrop of worldwide civil unrest and climate danger, a couple consummate their love off planet at the International Launch Project. When disaster strikes, leaving them alone and isolated in space, they pacify the conflicts as they deal with their biggest challenge yet: childbirth orbit with the whole world watching.Choice of Subtext Plots:
The Fish out of Water: Suli, accustomed to the controlled environment of the space program, finds herself completely out of her element when disaster strikes, leaving her stranded in space with Jon. As they struggle to survive, Suli must rely on her instincts and resourcefulness to navigate the unfamiliar territory of parenthood in zero gravity.
Superior Position: Throughout the mission, the audience is privy to information that Suli and Jon are unaware of, including Harrison's nefarious plans to sabotage the launch. As Suli and Jon face one challenge after another, the audience is kept on the edge of their seats, rooting for the protagonists to overcome the obstacles in their path.
A Major Cover-Up: Behind the scenes of the International Launch Project, Harrison orchestrates a major cover-up to conceal the truth about the mission's failure. As Suli and Jon race against time to unravel the mystery, they uncover evidence of Harrison's deception and must decide whether to expose the truth or protect the reputation of the space program.Notes on how I will use these:
I can see that Fish out of Water is an obvious one. Nobody has experienced what Suli is going to go through! Well, maybe in ancient times there will have been some having childbirth unaided in caves or some other isolation, but not in zero gravity!
I can also see that a major subplot option can be what is transpiring on Earth whilst they are contending with the challenges of space. So Superior Position and A Major Coverup can come into play as the script progresses, adding story background layers to the plot.-

My vision for success from this program is:
To create scripts freely when working with producers, directors and cast, so to make award-winning work and create a lifestyle which is confident of financial freedom. What I learned from doing this assignment is: It is really essential to set the template before writing a character.
Arc Begins: Suli starts as an ambitious and somewhat naïve astronaut, eager to prove herself and make a mark in the space program. She takes risks without fully considering the consequences, prioritizing the present moment over long-term planning.
Arc Ends: By the end of the story, Suli has undergone a profound transformation. She emerges as a responsible and practical leader, inspiring others with her resilience and determination. Through her experiences, she learns the importance of thinking ahead and taking calculated risks for the greater good.Internal Journey: Suli’s internal journey involves a shift from feeling overlooked and underrated to being revered and respected. Initially, she struggles with self-doubt and a fear of failure, but as she faces challenges in space and confronts her own limitations, she gains confidence in her abilities and earns the admiration of her peers.
External Journey: Suli’s external journey is marked by her evolution from a minor character included for racial diversity to a unifying force across all ethnicities. As she navigates the dangers of space and grapples with the unexpected pregnancy, Suli becomes a symbol of hope and resilience, bridging divides and bringing people together in the face of adversity.Old Ways: Suli’s old ways are characterized by her tendency to take risks and live in the present moment. She is ambitious and driven, but her impulsive nature sometimes leads her to make hasty decisions without considering the potential consequences.
New Ways: By the end of the story, Suli adopts a more careful and forward-thinking approach. She learns to weigh the risks and benefits of her actions, taking into account the long-term implications for herself and others. Her experiences in space and the challenges of motherhood shape her into a mature and responsible leader, inspiring those around her with her wisdom and compassion. -

I’ve written quite a few scripts and have one under option right now 😀. I’m a graduate of MSC14 amongst many other ScrU classes. All excellent.
I’m hoping to raise my ‘action’ game with this class. Many of my scripts fall into too many genre categories so bringing strategic focus is my aim here. However I don’y have a great high concept as yet so I may take my time posting here…
Something strange? I live on a boat on the Thames in London. Not so unusual though; following in the footsteps of Simon Beaufoy and Richard Branson! I hope I can live up to them!

Harry’s Lesson 4 Work
What I learned doing this assignment is: That my scenes require more of this… it is going to be fun to rewrite this script – even if it’s going to be a total re-write and lots of work!
Promotion at work:
Unaware, sabotage. The boss is eulogising about the selection of a new partner. Jon assumes it will be him as does everyone else. A female colleague is jealous and tells Klaudia that it is just nepotism. However it is Klaudia who is promoted. The subtext is that she doesn’t feel worthy even though her hard work has earned it, and he feels let down and not ‘good enough’ once more. This puts a strain on their relationship. The colleague secretly wants an affair with Klaudia and is trying to undermine their relationship .
After the accident:
Misinterpretation, deception. Jon is confident they can find a way out. Klaudia demands to know exactly how they will achieve this and what his training calls for in this situation. He has to admit that he has very little training. The subtext is that he is ‘flying by the seat of his pants’ to impress and loosen her up. Now he has to really work to both save them and to show that he has future plans to solve her base issues.
-
Harry’s Lesson 3 WORK
What I learned doing this assignment is: Although I had considered these traits before, I had not actually contrasted them with subtext. This is a great character development tool to learn!
Jon:
Character surface:, Spontaneous, impetuous, charming, easy-going.
Character Subtext: Appears over-confident but his subtext is wounded – untrusted by father as a kid, having to prove himself at every turn. Mother over-compensated and cleaned up after him. He craves approval.
How his character shows up: Messy and expects others to clean up/finish up for him. Reliant on and deferential to others but knows what he wants, just can’t force it. His spontaneity borders rashness. Often unprepared, relying on natural ability and charm.
Klaudia:
Character surface: Neat, deliberate, fastidious, workaholic, planner
Character Subtext: Mother died and father working all hours so had to care for her brother and couldn’t save him. Feels the need to over-care and control. Her balance is off.
How her character shows up: Control-freak. Her way is the only way. Not a team player but rises due to extraordinary diligence. Under the surface she wants to be cared for; to be taken care of and not to have to control every last detail. She has to learn to let others take command.
-
Harry’s Lesson 2 Work
What I learned doing this assignment is: Thinking about the environment in terms of subtext helps to give the script rock-solid foundations. Not just a setting but a reflection of the conflicts in the characters lives.
Environments:
Rockface. On the surface it is a challenge and one that they can master. However the subtext is that it is hard work and they must take care of each other to survive.
Home. Where different lifestyles conflict. Tidiness vs mess. Order vs chaos. Care vs neglect. The subtext being the primary motivations of our pair.
Workplace. Open plan but with concealable rooms. Subtext is that what is on the surface obscures what is being hidden underneath.
Beach. An open environment where all is equal. Subtext is that there is no place to hide.
Two main subtext Environments:
A: Rockface : One slip can be fatal. Competition does not win the day. When disaster is faced the only way to survive is to forget the past and work together. Environmental changes add weight to their individual predicaments. Physical challenges become metaphors for their issues.
B: Workplace : Where competition rules. Subverting the opposition is grist to the mill. On the surface civility and order rule, but the subtext is winning at all costs. Ostensibly a loving couple, these two are actually at war. Cases they work on create conflicts that underpin their differences – and their similarities, if they choose to see them.
-

MemberMay 10, 2021 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Subtext Mastery Lesson 1 – AssignmentHarry’s Subtext Mastery Lesson 1
What I learned doing this assignment is: It helps to clarify the intentions of the plot by understanding the subtext which underpins it.
Surface: Spontaneous and rash JON leads this warring couple into extreme sport…
Major Twist: …where a major accident traps them…
Deeper Meaning: …and forces them to work together regaining their trust in each other.
Plot Subtext:
The couple start out with Jon leading the expedition and Klaudia reluctantly following. The subtext is that she has been wearing the trousers in the relationship and he is seeking to gain control. Is this just an exercise or is he attempting to regain an equilibrium?
When the accident occurs she seeks to dominate but believes he may know more about how to survive in this instance. But he admits that he knows very little after all.
As their jeopardy increases with situational changes he concedes that she may have some points to offer.
But when push comes to shove she has no choice but to follow him in an extremely risky venture, where she has been proved right in the past.
As they survive this the realisation dawns that they actually do work well as a team and that both have more to offer than they thought. They have broken the endless loop of recrimination and can see what attracted them in the first place.

Great concept! I love a good pirate movie and creating a vehicle for older actors will be very appealing in Hollywood.
