Cary’s Characters for Horror
What I learned doing this assignment is that the more I flesh out each victim, the more each of their deaths will matter to the audience.
1. Tell us your Concept and the Group you have chosen.
Young Hitchhikers, previously strangers save for Miah and Hannah who are best friends. They become medical test subjects against their will.2. Tell us the Dying Pattern of this movie.
They are all medically experimented on and tortured, the most defiant ones experiencing significantly more pain, leaving two survivors.
3. Give us an Identity and a sentence for each character that makes up your group.
Introvert / Loner/ Sacrificial Lamb: Edwin – early to mid 20’s – Quiet, nerdy, first hitchhiker.
Love Interest: Mia – 21 – Sweet, inquisitive about people she meets, smart.
Out of control: Hannah – 23 – overtly flirty, aggressive, no filter.
Rebel / Rule Breaker/ Rescue attempter: Logan – 19 – Hiker, athletic, good sense of humor, shy with girls but easily lured into the car by the two girls (Mia and Hannah) he finds attractive. Logan, seeing the effects of the drinks they’re given, escapes the car and eludes being captured. With no means of communicating, he decides to find where they are and rescue the others.
Innocent: Olivia – 17 – Already caged for a while in the lab facility when they arrive. Having seen more than the others already, she is rendered mostly silent from the trauma.
Obnoxious: Jake – 16 – Already newly caged in the lab facility when they arrive. Jock with a mouth.

Cary’s Terrifying Monster
What I learned doing this assignment is how frightening an image regularly associated with compassion and help can be when turned on its head in a different context.
1. The Doctor
2. Give us a few sentences for each of the following for your monster:
Their Terror:
He operates and experiments on victims changed into hospital gowns and locked inside kennel cages prior being strapped down to strapped down to the operating table. He slowly does a routine examination on them before inflicting pain.Their Mystery:
He remains silent with no explanation of what he’s doing. The rest of the medical staff follow his orders with very little talk, becoming more rigid when he’s in the room.Their Fear Provoking Appearance:
He’s dressed in a long lab coat, over a shirt and tie. Wears a stethoscope and N95 surgical mask. He also wears a head mirror that reflects the light which obscures his face from the victims.Their Rules:
Hitchhikers are picked up on an isolated road(s.) People who are going somewhere and won’t be missed immediately. The amount of pain blockers they receive is entirely dependent on their behavior once captive.Their Mythology:
They believe that their research is for the greater good, though they are not approved for human studies. Thus, they must experiment on humans without consent. Perhaps to the benefit of their own family members. -
The Hills Have Eyes (2006) Horror Conventions
What I learned from doing this assignment is that more and more ideas begin to flow once I have a solid and specific idea of where I want to go with each element.
Title / Concept: The Hills Have Eyes
Terrorize The Characters: Initially believing they’re alone, they’re hunted by mutants who live in the desert.
Isolation: Vehicle is incapacitated in the empty desert.
Death: Pick axed to backs, dragged, shotgun suicide, beaten with rock, burned alive, blown up by explosion.
Monster/Villain: Mutants affected by nuclear radiation
High Tension: Huge terrain in the middle of nowhere. Unseen monsters. Possible other dangerous wildlife nearby.
Departure from Reality: Radiation affecting people this particular way.
Moral Statement: Ethics of government weapons testing. Appreciating family.
What I thought was great about this film was that they took the time to let the audience care about the victims before completely putting them through it.
_________________________________________________________________________________
My concept:
Concept: A psychopathic doctor abducts hitchhikers for medical experiments and organ harvesting against their will.
Terrorize The Characters: They become “lab rats” – tortured, contained, and vital organs removed. No idea which new experiment will ultimately kill them.
Isolation: Empty roads, medical lab, crate sized cages.
Death: Chemical treatments, pain tolerance, poison, amputation.
Monster/Villain: The Doctor and his assistants.
High Tension: Not knowing where they are. Not knowing if the next treatment will kill them. Clean and professional facility with an emotionally detached staff who are experts in their field.
Departure from Reality: Humans treated like lab animals.
Moral Statement: Medicine should be humane, even for the greater good.

I agree to the terms of this release form.
As a member of this group, I agree to the following:
1. That I will keep the processes, strategies, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class confidential, and that I will NOT share any of this program either privately, with a group, posting online, writing articles, through video or computer programming, or in any other way that would make those processes, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class available to anyone who is not a member of this class.
2. That each writer’s work here is copyrighted and that writer is the sole owner of that work. That includes this program which is copyrighted by Hal Croasmun. I acknowledge that submission of an idea to this group constitutes a claim of and the recognition of ownership of that idea.
I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.
3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.
4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.
5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.
6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

Hello everyone,
I’m Cary Patrick Martin
I’ve completed six short scripts and given up on many others!
As an independent filmmaker, my goal is to make at least one short in different genres. As I have a fondness for Horror, this genre will likely yield more than one! Most classes I have taken either haven’t been equipped to teach the specific tools of the genre, or I’ve been uncomfortable exploring darker content in a space with artists of different sensibilities or levels of consent. I’ll be forming a new idea from scratch with this class, and then I hope to use what I learn to revisit a script or two I’ve had struggles with. I direct and edit my own work, so I love the focus on writing for lower budgets!
I’m a long distance runner, having completed several full marathons, and often find my most creative ideas and solutions while I’m in a workout. They also come in the middle of the night, causing me to lose a lot of sleep!
