    ASSIGNMENT

Denise Nelson’s Plan for Increasing Perceived Value

What I learned by doing this assignment is to keep writing, keep positive and just get out there and begin to make it happen. To work with Producers and to seek out Producers and not give up. To go for it!

    1. What is your speciality?

    Drama/Romance

Describe your expertise in that speciality in one or two sentences.

Drama is my specialty and I seem to gravitate towards this Genre. I am going to search out Producers from the new skills I learned and market myself to Producers.

    2. How many Producers do you have in your LinkedIn Network?

I have very few Producers in this Specialty at this time. My goal is to send 5 requests per day and possibly add to my network at least 50 Producers per month.

    3. Looking at the list above titled “Increasing Your Perceived Value,” please tell us your plan for increasing your value in these three time frames:

    A. Today-I am learning in this class how to go forward in the future and begin getting writing assignments. I am learning to have the confidence in myself and to go for it.

    B. In the next 30 days-I will work on my Business Plan, send a request to 5 Producers daily and secure Writing Assignments and to begin working and gaining experience.

    C. In the next 6 months Secure at least three paid writing assignment that will get me a IMBD credit and give me experience to go even further. I wish to increase and grow from this class and actually begin working as a Screenwriter and to eventually get paid to do what I love to do.

Denise Nelson is a Note Taking Professional

What I learned by doing this assignment is? In order to secure a Producer as a writer I have to be willing to think creatively, be open to suggestions, changes and expect the changes will be coming.

    1. Tell us the logline of your treatment from the last assignment.

Logline: A teen female sophisticate is sent to vacation with her wealthy Grandma through Europe, only to realize that her wild dysfunctional Cousin whom she has feuded with for over a decade has also received an invitation.

    2. Tell us how you would honor each of the following requests:

    Cut the budget in half.

I would have to change the location in order to cut the budget in half. Perhaps a remote Island somewhere. I could also cut down the number of locations, extra scenes and extra props. I would also change my pages from 120-90 to help change the budget allowed.

Write it for a different audience (quadrant).

My story could resonate with a different quadrant just by changing the age of my characters and their goals. Grandma could also become a dear Friend perhaps or a dear Aunt and the ages of the women could change from age fourteen to adult over the age of 21.

    Double the conflict.

Instead of writing a drama/coming of age genre, perhaps I could take the script on an action/thriller ride and up the stakes of the characters, the journey, the end goal, what’s at stake, etc. Instead of the Cousins getting separated from Grandma on the train when their argument makes them miss their train, they get robbed at gunpoint while at the train station restroom and now they must work together in order to get to their next destination without killing one another. and hashing out old arguments.

Change the sex and age of the lead character.

By changing the sex from Female to Male and the age of the lead character, this could open up new possibilities and dynamics of the screenplay. From two female cousins, to different sex of my lead character and supporting characters, there is a whole array of changes I could make.

    Change the genre.

The Genre could change from Drama/Coming of Age to a Romance Comedy with the characters going from Female Cousins to former non related once upon a time Lovers the Hero falling in love with the Antagonist when they were in high school, having a falling out and now being invited to their best friends wedding and having to deal with one another throughout their journey.

    Denise Nelson’s Decreased Budget

What I learned by doing this ASSIGNMENT is?

Get used to being asked to decrease budget and be creative and quick for constant changes that the Producer will ask for.

    1. Run through this list and tell us how many ways (at least five ways) you can decrease the budget on your High Budget screenplay and what changes you might make in the script to do that.

    MAIN VARIABLES—SweetTart ORIGINAL IDEA

    Number of Locations -20

    Expensive locations-15-30

    Number of characters-6-10

    Special effects-10

    Number of pages-120

    Crowd scenes-15

Stunts, Chase scenes, and Fight scenes-20

    Special sets-15-25

    SECONDARY VARIABLES

Rights to music, brands, books, etc-0

    Explosions and Firearms-0

Kids — shorter work days, tutor on the set- 5 days shoot with kids

Animals – need a wrangler, more time to shoot, Humane Society-Tart’s poodle

Weather — Rain, snow, wind, tornados-Rain storm

    Water and underwater scenes-Pool scene

    Night scenes-10-15

    Helicopters, aircraft, drone shots-8

Green screen work-10 scenes with Green screen

    Extensive Make-up-2 scenes

    Archival Footage-4-6 scenes

Anything else dangerous that increases preparation time and/or Insurance- A Fire At hotel

    2. With a major scene that depends upon a “high budget variable,” take it through the process of finding another way to deliver on the dramatic goal. The fire scene, this is where the girls are invited to the Brother’s hotel room thinking that they have a place to stay for the night, soon after the Brother’s girl friends show up and Sweet and Tart are kicked out, Sweet unbeknownst to Tart starts a fire to set off the fire alarms as a payback for the Brother’s lying to them about not having girl friends as all the fire and police show up at the hotel. This would definitely be a major cost.

Another way I could deliver this is to have the brothers staying on the other side of the remote island and the girls have gotten lost in the woods only to bump into the brothers and the brothers inviting them back to their tents. Making the best of things, the cousins finally getting along, they have fun all day on the beach with the brothers and then at night, the Brother’s dishonesty is revealed when their girlfriends show up on the beach paddling kayaks. The girls are upset at Sweet and Tart. The girls are asked to leave and must hike and find their way back to the other side of the island. Upon leaving, Sweet finds and places Poison Ivy in the Brother’s tents as she and Tart are leaving.

Tell us about the high budget item in your script that you are letting go of.

The Trip to Europe with Grandma, I could eliminate the expensive European vacation and take this story to a favorite family resort that the family has gone in the past.

I could find a location that offers film incentives to lower costs.

I could put more character emphasis on my two young female characters and less on the others, for example their dads conspiring with Grandma.

Ask, “What is the dramatic goal I am trying to accomplish with this scene?” The invite to Europe and both girls accept the invitation from Grandma without knowing that the other one is going, as the girl cousins both hate one another with a passion they arrive on scene just to realize that the other cousin was asked as well. .

Ask, “How can I accomplish the dramatic goal without the expense?”

I can deliver the goal by making the location a favorite family summer resort on a remote island and when the reveal of the cousin to the other cousin is announced, one cousin gets in her kayak to paddle off only to realize she’s stuck on that island as Grandma insists or she won’t get her College fund.

Denise Nelson’s rewrite of Debbie Johnson’s treatment:

What I learned from this assignment is that I really got to delve into what the Producer had in mind, her vision, her fantastic encouragement and idea of her story. By working with the Sequences and trying to deliver the best Re-write treatment of the Producer’s vision was a great way to learn how to work with Producers in the future.

As the Producer, I enjoyed being on the other side and explaining my vision and what I had in mind, what I would like to accomplish. This was a fun experience.

Denise Nelson’s rewrite of Debbie Johnson’s treatment:

Logline: It’s 1983 and a gangly teenage boy wants to Couples Skate with the most popular girl in his school but must overcome his angst, shyness, and other rivals to win her hand.

SEQUENCE 1 A row of Buses seen exiting a school parking lot on their way to the, ”Eight Wheels A Go Go”, roller rink.

Miles hurriedly exits the school sprinting towards the bus, his t-shirt sopping wet. A gangly thirteen year old, he stumbles over his shoelace as he continues to the last bus. Catching it at the stop sign, he beats on the door.

The suspicious BUS DRIVER hesitates until Miles produces his tattered permission slip, smeared in ink, hardly readable. The driver hesitates, barely recognizes the slip but finally allows Miles on the bus.

Miles boards with relief. He sits next to his best friend, Eric about halfway through the seating.

Miles shares with Eric that he got locked in a bathroom stall and had to crawl under to get out, only to realize his shirt was soiled. He washed it at the sink and it was at that moment, he realized how late he was. As Eric and Miles carry on their conversation, the pecking order of students is revealed.

At the back of the bus, the cool kids carry conversation, including Stellla the most popular girl in school, who sits next to Arlo, the preppy, good-looking, cocky as hell charmer, who wishes to secure Stella as his girlfriend by the end of the field trip.

Their friends are fellow cool boys and girls. They all continue conversation amongst one another talking about everything from trash gossip to fashion, including Stella’s tight-fitting Jordache jeans and how the less popular girls try to copy her, wearing knockoffs.

Miles watches Stella and reveals to Eric that he’s going to ask Stella if she wants to join him in Couples Skate. Eric rolls his eyes and encourages Miles to refrain from humiliating himself. Miles plugs his ears. Eric next challenges Miles to just say something to Stella and not come off weird and creepy.

Miles turns and catches Stella’s eye. He thinks she’s glancing at him, but she’s actually trying to communicate with someone behind him. Embarrassed, Miles slumps in his seat. Stella shows off her pretty smile. Eric laughs at Miles, bats his eyelashes and gestures a loser sign at Miles.

SEQUENCE 2 THE SKATING RINK EIGHT WHEELS A GO GO, Sign is seen. The buses arrive as the kids exit, a line forms inside and JOSH, the arrogant skate pro, takes a head count as he skates in and out of the line on one foot, adding an occasional spin.

Eric and Miles putting their skates on. Eric has no problem with his skates, but Miles’s skates are too small for his feet. Eric encourages Miles to go back and get proper fitting skates.

    SEQUENCE 2 CONT’D.

Josh, skeptical of Mile’s pain, gives him skates that are now too big for him. Miles is annoyed because there is a long line of other kids who are experiencing the same problem, with no hassle on their swap outs.

Miles, frustrated that everyone is out having a good time but him. He finally seizes the courage within and ploughs through the CROWD to demand he be given the right size of skate. Josh admires his spunk. (This is the Inciting Incident)

    SEQUENCE 3 INSIDE THE RINK

On the rink, Miles catches up with Eric as they follow behind Stella and her friend group. Miles reasserts that he’s going to Couples Skate with Stella and Eric dares him to skate ahead and start by saying hello to her, reminding him that presently she doesn’t even know he exists.

Miles takes the dare and skates up to Stella as fast as he can, ready to say hello. Caught off guard with her pretty smile, he slips on his skatelace and takes a tremendous plunge dive into the wall. Stella’s friends laugh hysterically. Stella GASPS, her facial expression shows genuine concern. Miles continues to slam into the rink wall. Resilient but embarrassed, Miles gets back up and brushes himself off. Eric mocks Miles, reassures him that he is a great friend, but this was definitely an epic fail. Miles replies. “At least she now knows who I am!”

    SEQUENCE 4 THE CONSESSION STAND

Miles and Eric decide at that moment to visit the concession stand and get a hot dog. REGGIE, the concession stand guy, motions a cross with his hands to stay away from the old hotdogs, but Eric insists on having one, with all the condiments of his choice and then some. Upon talking to Reggie, both young teens soon learn that he is a smooth-talking ladies man/comedian who’s also quite clumsy himself, but gets away with it, because he makes the ladies laugh. He asks the boys about the upcoming couples only skate, asking, “So dudes, where are your beautiful young ladies?” Miles confides in Reggie about Stella and Reggie enthusiastically gives him some very bizarre advice on how to win her hand. “You need a plan dude. Including some authentic pick-up lines and silly compliments, that will win her heart, girls love to laugh, ya know my man?” Reggie then goes one step further and reverently gives Miles a lucky rabbit’s foot inside a minature roller skate keyring and tells him.”This is your lucky charm my dude, so go use it’s magic, ya dig?” Miles studies the stuffed rabbit foot-roller skate with hope. Reggie encourages Miles to make a diversion, start a food fight perhaps – explaining that he could get everyone involved, but stay incognito, then sweep in and look like the hero, offering to help Stella clean up the mess, or better yet sneak away with her out onto the roller rink. Miles likes the idea. Eric argues, “that’s the most ridiculous thing he ever heard of.” Reggie continues, telling Miles that he could even brush the popcorn out of her hair and what girl wouldn’t be taken in with his sensitivity? Miles listens attentively, Eric argues that the whole scheme is ridiculous. Miles is encouraged, Eric just wants to eat his hot dog. Promptly scarfing it down, Eric excuses himself to the bathroom.

SEQUENCE 5 WINNING THE LADIES OVER

Miles on his own now, skates around the rink by himself and notices Mr. Blugburn, the Woodshop teacher, and one of their chaperones for the day. Blugburn is having trouble with the “claw” machine, Miles feels he can help since he wins at this game all the time, the one good thing he’s actually good at. Miles feels like superman after his pep talk with Reggie and goes in to help Blugburn. As he dislodges the prize, Miles asks Mr. Blugburn for advice on winning over the ladies. Mr. Blugburn says women are nothing but trouble and that he is better staying single his whole life, but thanks Miles for helping him at his game. “Good luck kid, but take my advice, stay away.”

    SEQUENCE 6 COUPLES SKATE/LUCKY STAR

Miles is caught off guard by Blugburn’s negative comments and then again as it is announced, the first Couples Only skate. The disco ball spins. and Miles scrambles to find Stella. He is about to approach her but hesitates as he remembers Blugburn’s comments. His heart sinks when Arlo swoops in and takes her hand and leads her out onto the rink. Sadly, he watches them go round and round. Eric finally emerges from the bathroom and joins Miles, still cursing the old hotdog, he tries to offer some comfort when Miles shares Mr. Blugburn’s comments. Now Reggie joins them, he tries to proffer more ridiculous advice and Mr. Blumberg now joins in too. “See, I told you so.” Miles inside is stewing that he’s not out with Stella. Eric spews out. “You messed up, you really messed it up.” Miles argues there’s one more Couples Only skate. Eric laughs. We’ll see, at this point, you’ll need a miracle.”

When the lights come back up, it’s time to play Lucky Star. Everyone skates and when the music stops, skaters stop on the numbered stars on the floor. The DJ calls out a star, like Bingo, and the winner gets a prize. Miles kisses the lucky rabbit’s foot and then gets his miracle when he wins not once, but twice. He becomes the center of attention, and the DJ makes a big deal out of it. The first prize is a free frozen Coke. The second is a free hot dog.

Miles, feeling brave, collects his winnings and casually gives the free frozen Coke ticket to Stella who appears surprised, she happily accepts, her friends brush Miles off as they pull Stella away to skate.

SEQUENCE7 ARLO at the ARCADE IN THE SKATING RINK

The gesture by Miles immediately draws the attention of Arlo who appears jealous. Arlo and his best friend, Rick corner Miles and question him when Eric revisits the toilet a second time. Miles, taken aback, makes up a story, tells Arlo that Stella just happened to be standing there and he didn’t want the frozen coke to go to waste. Rick and Arlo, don’t believe his tale and insist that no one just gives away a free frozen Coke. He tells Miles he’s going to keep his eye on him and if he nears Stella again, he’ll pay the price. Then Rick goes one step further and steals the free hot dog ticket from Miles. Miles is shaken up to the core.

    SEQUENCE 8 SKATE RACES

It’s time for the skate races. They start with the little kids and move up to the older ones. Arlo is sure to win but Miles looks at his lucky rabiit’s foot again, he squeezes it into his palm and now he’s ready to give Arlo a racing challenge.

The race begins, Miles and Arlo continue around the rink, they are neck and neck, but at the last second, Rick comes up from behind and trips up Miles. Arlo wins. Miles collides with the skate wall. Josh, the skate pro, could clearly see the injustice of the race and when Miles asks him for help, Josh gives it. “Get back out there.” Josh encourages.

Miles picks himself up and regroups with Eric who has just returned from the bathroom a second time asking, ‘What did I miss this time?’ Miles, enraged, admits that Stella is out of his league, but it’s not over until it’s over.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Blugburn, in the earshot of Stella, bad-mouths Miles. Reggie lets it slip in earshot of Arlo that Miles wants to Couples Skate with Stella. Rick, about ready to redeem the free hot dog, handing in the ticket gets a wake up call from Arlo, who takes it from him and gets the hot dog for himself. “Time to fuel up, that dork is going down.” Arlo continues.

Time is winding down and the DJ announces the last Couples Only is coming up.

    SEQUENCE 9 BATHROOM

Miles goes to the bathroom to check his hair and is followed by Arlo, Rick, and some other big boys. They trap Miles in the stall. Arlo and the others hold the door, but soon, the hot dog “kicks in” and Arlo must go to the bathroom. Arlo takes the next stall and stinks up the place so badly that his friends can’t stand it. They exit the bathroom, freeing Miles, who smiles at the lucky rabbitsfoot.

    SEQUENCE 10 SKATE RINK

Miles races to find Stella as the Couples Skate is announced. She’s with her friends, about ready to take her skates off, but Josh delays her a moment as he can see Miles rushing to get close to her. Meanwhile, taking Reggie’s advice on a diversion, Eric starts a food fight in the concessions area. Mr. Blugburn tries to break it up when Miles arrives around the corner at the right moment and asks Stella to accompany him on the couples skate. She smiles and accepts.

Mr. Blugburn thrown off by Miles sappieness, attempts to trip Miles, but falls himself to the floor when he trips over Mile’s lucky rabbitsfoot, now seen on the floor. Miles and Stella slide heroically on the rink and hold one another’s hands, both smiling from ear to ear. Miles leans in and brushes the popcorn out of her hair as they continue to sktate the floor.

The lights dim, the disco ball spins and they skate round and round, hand in hand. Arlo emerges from the bathroom, gripping his stomach, and is about to take the floor, but gets hit in the head with a random flying frozen Coke. He’s a mess. Eric turns around and snickers as he grabs onto MIles rabbitfoot.

    Sequence 12

It’s time to go. Miles says goodbye to Josh and Reggie. Stella still accompanies Miles, Eric now joins and hands Miles back the lucky rabbitfoot as all three teens look upon it. Miles tries to return Reggie’s rabbit’s foot, Reggie insists he keep it (shows him a case and it’s full of rabbitsfeet).

    Sequence 13

Everyone now returns on the bus assigned their respective seats. Miles and Stella smile at one another as she departs to the back Miles gives her the rabbitsfoot. She glances at him again, the chemistry obvious. Miles is awestruck by the whole experience and returns to his seat, he turns to Eric who gives him a subtle thumbs up. Now Arlo and Rick stumble in looking worn and defeated, Stella already seated again in the back with her friends laughs as do all the rest of the cool girls.

The buses depart the roller rink.

Stella studies the rabbitsfoot and suddenly excuses herself from the back of the bus.

Moves to the middle section and squeezes in next to Miles.

    Denise’s Fantastic Treatment:

What I learned by doing this assignment, is that I have to ask questions and think creatively if asked to prepare a treatment. Finding out if they are using a certain structure? Like 3 act or Mini Movie Format for example. And finding out what a PRODUCER’S pain points are, if they prefer a BEAT SHEET to a 3 Page Treatment. By asking lots of open ended questions, this allows the PRODUCER to unfold what they are thinking.

    GENRE: DRAMA/COMING OF AGE/INDI

    SweetTart

    Structure: MINI Movie

    MM 1 (1-15 pages)

We meet each character in their ordinary world. SWEET BENNINGTON. wild, rowdy, creative, artisitc and borderline Juvenile delinquent, age 17 is getting bailed out of jail by HARVEY BENNINGTON, Sweet’s concerned, sensitive, Father. TART BENNINGTON, popular, principled snootie and extremely critical of others, is practicing her speech as Class President, droaning on in front of her Business Entrepreneur Father, ANDREW BENNINGTON, Andrew is critiquing her every line as dull and ordinary. Each brother makes a phone call to see their mother GWENTH BENNINGTON, complaining about their Daughter’s place in the world, unbeknownst to the other she’s arranged a lunch, which both men agree to. The problem is, these brother’s do not get along since they have become fathers years ago and have not spoken after they got into a riff with one another about how to parent. The day has arrived for lunch and Gwenth is waiting for her sons to arrive at her grand Estate. When each son arrives at her Grand Estate, they meet up again for the first time in years. Immediately Harvey and Andrew are ready to bolt, but Gwenth Bennington pleads with them to stay. Each agrees to set aside their differences and give it a chance. Next Gwen pulls out the old 8mm movies when the men were teenagars enjoying their European vacation together with her, they each soften inside and begin to laugh at all the moments they had along the way. That is when Gwenth goes one step further and says, and what worked for them might just work for their daughters. So she begins to brainstorm a European vacation. At first both Dad’s are reluctant, but then they decide, this could be just the solution each father has been looking for. Send an invitation to each young lady to join Grandma Bennington for one, great summer in Europe.

    MM2 (15-30 pages)

It’s the last day of school and Sweet has just managed enough to get into Art college next fall. She opens the mailbox and sees an envelope addressed to her. She opens her invite and sees a plane ticket, a boarding pass and she realizes that it is from Grandma Bennington. She makes the phone call to Grandma’s and confirms her acceptance. Tart Bennington is busy having friends over at her family’s gigantic pool, she is summoned by her father to get the mail. She whines to her friends, but does as she is told, gets out of the pool and dries off. She goes to the mailbox and opens the mail. She sees the inviation and opens it. She reads on as she resumes into the house. Placing the mail into her father’s hands. He asks her what the invatation is for, she says a stupid trip to Europe with Grandma Bennington, that she’d rather go with her friends. Her father gives her a speech about how to be grateful. She blows him off, “Sure, fine, Whatever, I’ll go.” She’s also a people pleaser.

    MM3

Each girl takes a separate flight unbeknownst to the other that they are going to journey together. Sweet arrives in London with Grandma’s open arms. Moments later, Tart arrives and immediately

    MM3 CONT’D.

GASPS. She cannot believe that she’s been tricked. She can’t stand her cousin and immediately goes to the counter. Sweet is pissed off at the realization as well and confronts Grandma. Grandma

Bennington coaxes Sweet to come with her to the counter to get Tart. Tart gives Grandma Bennington a kiss, but tells Grandma she is boarding the next plane out as she cannot hang out with Sweet savage. Sweet and Tart get into a fight, but Grandma pulls them apart and tells each girl that she has paid good money and that each young lady must grow up and accompany her across Europe as she is in the last final year of her life. So each girl softens, takes a step back and they agree.

    MM4

So the trip to Europe is on and the first night is in London. Grandma has big plans to go to dinner and see London at night, including the OPERA. When they arrive at their hotel, each girl realizes they will be bunking togther and that Grandma will have her own room. Each one is neither thrilled, nor wants to hang out with the other. When they get into their own private room, next door to the adjoining room of Grandma, the girls duke it out with words and a pillow fight. Tart is quick to criticize Sweet’s lack of taste and elegance in dress. Sweet criticizes Tart’s lack of originality, telling her she is ordinary and she dresses matronly. Each girl hurts the other’s feelings deep down inside. At dinner the girls barely say a word to one another and the whole dinner is filled with silence. Sweet is slurping her soup, when Tart points out that she is disgusting and a disgust to the world. Grandma reminds the girls they are on a strict schedule because they have to get to the Opera, Tart says well the food will be along in any minute and takes Grandma Bennington outside on the rooftop terrace, leaving Sweet all alone. Soon, the WAITER arrives witht he food. Sweet tells the waiter that Tart is a model and fasting and that he must take her plate away. He is confused, asking why she ordered and she says, yes, she likes to feel normal adding she will give him an extra tip to take the plate away and not to say a word. When Grandma and Tart return, Sweet greets both with open arms and a giant smile. Grandma is excited to eat, Sweet begins to eat and Tart is left eating mere bread, waiting for her meal. When Grandma asks the waiter where Tart’s food is, he says oh, I’m sorry, we are out of that dish this evening and the kitchen is closed I’m afraid. Grandma realizes they must leave for the Opera and cannot get to another restaurant in time. Tart is left without having her dinner and never eats between meals. Tart realizes what has just happened as she sees the smirk on Sweet’s face. It is now war and the girls battle again with one another back in their room at the end of the night, having a huge fight, throwing things at one another. More sabatage to one another occurs shopping the next day, Tart takes Sweet’s clothes and throws them away while Sweet is in the dressing room, forcing her to wear something she hates. The pranks continue until finally they are about ready to change trains in Germany. Grandma Bennington has to ride separately because of the last minute ticket schedule, but she makes the girls promise that they will board the train car next to hers as she has secured their tickets on the next car over.

    MM4

The Teen girls get caught up in another squabble in the women’s bathroom and when this happens, they miss the train, unbeknownst to Grandma Bennington who is carrying all the suitcases, money etc. Grandma gets off at the next destination and realizes the girls aren’t with her. The young women must now fend for themselves as they realize even their phones are in Grandma’s purse . Grandma Bennington quickly gets out her phone punches in Sweet’s phone and hears it ring. She then punches in Tart’s phone and hears it ring in her purse, she opens her own purse and closes it shut. She hails a cab and leaves the train station. Sweet and Tart are left in the middle of the train station. Both part ways as each one can’t stand the other. Tart tries to get by on her looks with no luck, Sweet tries to steal a phone, trouble is her scruffy appearance, she almost gets arrested and manages a diversion and sneaks away.

    MM5

After both girls are down and out and not successful at getting a hold of any family members on their own, they both end up in the park, bumping into one another by accident and decide to join forces and get to the hotel. They try to devise a plan to get a phone, money and a change of clothes. They must get creative and figure out a plan. Meanwhile they are now being followed by a mysterious MAN who they realize is wandering around them. They end up fooling him by Sweet’s creative plan to get the creep off of their trail as they continue their journey without being followed.

    MM6

The girls walk and walk and end up getting to a Hotel, they are hungry, tired and Sweet manages to pull Tart into her scheme to get them a hotel room and a meal at the local hotel. Denise’s Synopsis for Producer Interview

What I learned from this Assignment is: I loved this assignment because speaking with another writer and talking over my project as the PRODUCER helped me to flesh out ideas for my project, it gave me great clarity of the story I’m trying to tell. It encouraged a great conversation as to my vision, my intent, the development and the project from start to finish.

    GENRE/Drama/Coming Of Age/Indi

Logline: A privileged, teen sophisticate is sent to vacation with her wealthy Grandma through Europe, only to realize that her wild, Juvenile delinquent Cousin also received an invitation.

    Denise’s Writing Sample Plan

If you want to exchange feedback-reply to this post or send me an email at cinemacoastfilms@gmail.com I am available to read your screenplay too.

What I learned from this assignment is that you have to put your best writing sample out there, along the way, you will get critiqued. A Producer from that moment, will decide if they want to work with you. This class is to get paid writing assignments, so you are not only trying to create something that will entice the Producer to hire you as the writer for their project, but you are also going to have to be open to criticism, critique and their vision. Although it can be mind blowing and painful, at the end of the day, if you put your own writing sample out there and you get a negative critique, just keep an open mind. You initially may feel they either see your vision or they don’t, just be open to their opinion. Your own writing sample and its changes ultimately is up to you, the writer. If you get several producers wanting you to make changes, be open to it, but at the end of the day, when you are talking about your own creative work, you have to decide. That simple. Some people will get you and some won’t, you can’t be all things to everyone. Their vision may be different than yours, their slate might be different than yours. It takes guts to write, throw everything you have into it, be open to negative criticism, but don’t lose yourself in these critiques. You will find a Producer that gets you and you get them, they’re out there, keep going and don’t lose sight of that.

Set Up: This is the beginning of my Drama/Romance Screenplay PASTIES- first ten pages.

We meet each of our characters in their ordinary world as they go through Saturday night in a small Northern Michigan town. NOTE: This screenplay sample is adaptable and the -Location- I have set in a small Upper Peninsula Michigan town, however the Geographical location could be anywhere and changed in a matter of seconds if the project may secure a Producer.

    FADE IN

    INT. RESTAURANT-PASTIES-NIGHT

ELIZABETH BAINES a small town, fresh out of high school fashion Goddess, shows disdain as she mops the floor at her Family Pasties Restaurant. Swiftly she reaches for the CLOSED sign, faces it towards the CROWD on the street.

TOURISTS pass by, she sighs, stares out the window a moment. Elizabeth sees a stylish woman pass, reminds her of a dream she had and a future she longs for in high fashion design.

She glances over towards the kitchen and views the charred remnants of a commercial oven, the result of a kitchen fire this past spring, she motions her best friend.

    ELIZABETH

    Jacques come quick.

JACQUES PHILLIP, Elizabeth’s best friend, recently turned eighteen, a striking lad with a zest for cooking, he observes the oven as he passes it, holds his nose closed from the pungent smell. His adoration for Elizabeth immense, he spies her gawking through the window.

    JACQUES

    What is it?

    ELIZABETH

    Look at her outfit.

Jacques takes a moment as Elizabeth points the WOMAN out across the street.

    ELIZABETH

That’s the couture I desire to wear and design.

Jacques moves in next to Elizabeth, both continue to stare for several moments.

    JACQUES

Hmm, I don’t know? I think you look pretty chic in that apron.

Elizabeth nudges his elbow. Jacques laughs.

    JACQUES

    Just kidding.

Jacques true aspiration, to be Elizabeth’s humbled, wedded husband one day and part owner of the family restaurant, PASTIES.

    ELIZABETH

Come on you, let’s close up.

    EXT. PASTIES – NIGHT

Elizabeth and Jacques exit the restaurant and glance at one another.

    ELIZABETH (SIGHS)

I thought we’d never get out of there.

    EXT. Street – NIGHT

Elizabeth and Jacques ride their bicycles through the charming, bustling tourist filled streets. An obvious conversation takes place as they continue to ride next to one another.

    EXT. CEMETERY-NIGHT

Elizabeth and Jacques glide down a narrow path entering the historic cemetery.

The mammoth BRIDGE lights up the sky and the historic tombstones. It’s there, like a beacon of hope for rustic Northern Michigan, past, present and future.

Sitting next to one another they pass a joint, the lights from the Bridge reflect on the water.

    ELIZABETH

New York City, in a few weeks. Can you believe? (BEAT), I’m counting the days.

Jacques throws Elizabeth a fake smile.

    ELIZABETH

    Can you just imagine it?

    JAQUES

You won’t miss this place? Even just a little?

    ELIZABETH

    Never to return again.

    JACQUES

    Right.

    ELIZABETH

Oh c’mon, don’t look so sad.

    EXT. CEMETERY-NIGHT

Jacques pouts as he inhales the joint.

    ELIZABETH

Jacques, c’mon, you must please pretend to act happy for me.

Jacques exhales, passes the joint to Elizabeth.

    JACQUES

Only if you send for me one day after you get settled.

    ELIZABETH

Do you think I’d actually be able to pry you out of your quaint little town? I mean c’mon you love it here.

    JACQUES

Hey if you’re there, I’m there.

    ELIZABETH

    You’d actually come to NYC?

    JACQUES(NODS)

Literally yes. I don’t know what I’ll do with myself when you’re gone.

Elizabeth smiles and studies Jacques, leans in and kisses him on the cheek.

    ELIZABETH

Well I might just have to design you something cool for saying all that.

Jacques ears perk up, he’s flattered. He takes the joint, laughs and refrains from smoking now as Elizabeth gets up and throws her apron around her shoulders.

    ELIZABETH

    The JACQUES collection.

Elizabeth and Jacques giggle, both admiring the twinkle lights on the bridge.

    ELIZABETH

Maybe a line of high fashion chef aprons.

    JACQUES

    I’d wear em.

    ELIZABETH

    I’m kidding.

    JACQUES

    I think it’s a great idea.

    ELIZABETH

Well we both know this, I’m not much of a seamstress yet. (BEAT), But with the right direction and some more schooling, I will be.

    JACQUES

You’re off to a good start. I love the shorts you made me for my birthday.

Jacques and Elizabeth both look down at his zany patchwork cotton printed shorts Elizabeth designed for him . The pair burst out laughing.

    INT. GRIZZLY DEN-BAR – NIGHT

MARGARET BAINES, Elizabeth’s sassy older sister smokes a cigarette as she wipes down the counter, swaying her hips to a rock and roll classic.

RAYON NOBLE, Margaret’s heavy bearded, mild mannered, motorcycle mechanic boyfriend, checks her out and notices his drunken best friend PAL pounding on the jukebox now from the back corner, he sprints over to assist.

    RAYON

    HEY. PAL, what’s goin on?

Margaret turns and observes the situation. Rayon’s size intimidates everyone in the CROWD except his best friend Pal who is drunk again.

    PAL

It took my money man, piece of shit. It’s a rip off.

Pal gestures both middle fingers towards the jukebox.

Margaret sets her glasses down, rushes over to Rayon and Pal, from behind the counter. The CROWD absorb her as she glides in.

    INT. GRIZZLY DEN BAR-NIGHT

Pal ignores her as Rayon takes a hold of him. Margaret gets in the middle of Rayon, his angry friend Pal and the record machine to assist in the heated situation.

    MARGARET

    What’s goin on here boys?

    PAL

    I LOST MY MONEY.

    RAYON

Well, you’re going to lose more than that if you keep beating the shit out of this here jukebox.

Margaret reaches into Pal’s jeans pocket, pulls out his car keys, she proceeds to escort him out of the bar, Rayon follows her.

    EXT. GRIZZLY DEN-BAR-NIGHT

Margaret hands Pal’s keys to Rayon.

    MARGARET

    Drive him home, will ya?

    INT. BAINES HOUSE – NIGHT

MARY and GEORGE BAINES, Elizabeth’s and Margaret’s parents sit round table as a deep discussion takes place, their business financials display in front of them.

    MARY

I don’t know why you look so stunned George, we have to keep going, ya know? I mean it’s always been about the perfect Pastie and we haven’t the oven anymore. (Beat), So that’s making it difficult to make profit. (BEAT), And that old antique hot oven, piece of shit isn’t going to last much longer neither.

    GEORGE

So I say we just cut our losses and close up, move on.

    MARY

What? And let my Aunt Kay down? After she so willingly gave it to us?

    GEORGE

And why do you think that is now?

    MARY

What are you trying to say?

    GEORGE

    I don’t know.

    MARY

Look, I belong there in that restaurant. Ya know? And you do too. What? Go back and work on the car ferry service? Both of us?

    GEORGE

    Maybe?

    MARY

Hmm, we both know it’s too many long hours and not enough pay. At least not to support our family.

    GEORGE

    And what about my shipping.

    MARY

Ah, yes, shipping that’s all together different, besides, you love it and you actually get paid to be on those freighters.

    GEORGE

Look, I’m not trying to rain on your thunder, but Pasties almost burned to the ground.

    MARY

But it didn’t. Isn’t that a blessing in itself? Thank God it was only the oven.

    GEORGE

We shouldn’t have these worries. Especially on Elizabeth’s graduation night.

    MARY

George, it was only an oven. For God’s sakes, a little hiccup. We still made the Graduation. Look, we need that new oven. You’ll see the profit, I promise. Course, I can’t believe all the recipes are gone?

    GEORGE

See? Another problem. We don’t even have the recipes.

    MARY

I know they burned up, but Kay has the extra set, I’ll just ask her for them.

    GEORGE

    Yeah? And when is that?

    MARY

    I don’t know?

    GEORGE

How ya gonna tell her ya almost burned the place down?

    MARY

No worries, I’ll figure it out.

Mary taken aback, stares down George, their eyes melt into one another. Both remembering their twenty five years of marriage, loads of love and struggles, their daughters they named after the ROYALS. George softens.

    MARY

They’re pasties George and the tourists love em.

    GEORGE

Okay fine, order the new oven. By the way, they got me on another freighter and another one after that, starting tonight.

    Mary kisses George.

    MARY

    I’ll miss you.

    GEORGE

    Same.

    MARY

    George, I love you.

    GEORGE(SULKING)

    I love you too.

Mary leans in and gives George another kiss, they hug.

    INT. HOUSE-NIGHT

Elizabeth and Jacques enter the house, George and Mary still in deep conversation. Elizabeth knows all to well the conversation topic. George and Mary oblivious to the entry, the young adults sneak down the corridor to Elizabeth’s bedroom.

    JACQUES

Aren’t you going to even say hello?

Elizabeth ignores Jacques, continues through the corridor.

    ELIZABETH (WHISPERS)

No, don’t worry, it’s cool. They need to talk, they hardly see each other these days.

Jacques and Elizabeth enter her bedroom, he watches Elizabeth tidy up, she hands him a fanny pack she made for him. Jacques observes it, he’s in love with the uneven sides already.

    JACQUES

    You made this for me?

    ELIZABETH

Yeah, out of remnants, cool huh? Matches your shorts?

Jacques places the fanny pack around his waist and admires the effort. At that moment, the phone RINGS. Elizabeth nods and picks up at first ring.

    INT. KITCHEN-NIGHT

George and Mary’s laughter lingers through the hallway.

    INT. BEDROOM-NIGHT

Elizabeth gasps. Jacques observes her shock, she quickly runs with the phone.

    JACQUES

    What is it?

Jacques follows Elizabeth, she’s fighting back tears.

    INT. KITCHEN-NIGHT

Elizabeth presents herself as George and Mary peer up at one another, both realize Elizabeth’s home, they startle.

    MARY

Elizabeth? Honey, when did you get home. Jacques, good to see you.

Jacques nods as Elizabeth tears up, obviously upset. Everyone glances at her in shock.

    MARY

    What is it?

    GEORGE

    What’s goin on?

    ELIZABETH

    Mom, it’s Aunt Kay.

Jacques behind Elizabeth, holds onto her, his concern is always true and genuine.

INT. GRIZZLY DEN BAR – NIGHT

Margaret is busy sending more Patrons off after an active night, the Jukebox plays more classic rock.

    EXT. U.S. 2 HIGHWAY – NIGHT

A MOTORCYCLIST is seen against the night sky, he races down the highway. A deer leaps in front of his motorbike, he loses control, the echo of squealing tires heard.

The MOTORCYCLIST collides with a row of mailboxes right side. Abruptly loses control, the motorcycle eventually comes to a halt, the motorcyclist on the ground.

The sounds of DEEP BREATH and GRUNT NOISES heard through the helmet.

    INT. GRIZZLY DEN BAR- NIGHT

Margaret is sweeping the floor at the bar, an out of breath PATRON approaches her.

    PATRON (SHOUTS)

Come quick, there’s a man lying on the pavement across the street, he’s just laying there.

    INT. GRIZZLY DEN BAR-NIGHT-CONT’D.

Margaret gasps, drops the broom. The remaining few of the Patron’s rush out into the street.

    EXT. U.S. 2 HIGHWAY – NIGHT

On the ground in the midst of several mailboxes lies the MOTORCYCLIST he GROANS. Margaret and a few bar PATRONS move in closer.

The man lifts his thumb, signaling a thumbs up as one of the PATRONS runs across the street and into the bar.

    MOTORCYCLIST

Help me get this helmet off.

Margaret GASPS as do the other Patrons, they notice the man’s effort, his bloody leg. The MOTORCYCLIST attempts to lift himself.

    MARGARET

    Oh no, please don’t.

The MOTORCYCLIST continues lifting himself up. He lifts off his helmet, GROANS. Margaret and the Patrons GASP as they realize the reveal.

The MOTORCYCLIST, a famous rock and roll star, JONES JAMESON.

    Denise’s Key Business Decisions

What I learned by doing this assignment is:

Breaking down the pieces that go into making a film as the Producer takes flexibility, creativity and adaptability. Collaborating and changing the script will be expected, embrace the change because it’s going to be inevitable, don’t fall in love with your script. There is so much that goes into making a film and the Budget is critical, it is the Business Plan of the Movie and it has to make sense to anyone financing the film as to how they will get their money back and make a profit.

    Denise Nelson Movie #2

What I learned by doing this assignment is that the Drama Genre is full of rich characters, emotional scenes, roller coaster ups and downs and I want to learn everything I can by writing more in this Genre.

    Genre=Drama

Title: Call Me By Your Name

Adapted Screenplay written by James Ivory(Academy Award Winner 2017) for this screenplay.

    Drama/Coming Of Age/Romance

This movie takes place in the year 1983 and delivers on the conventions by taking us through the journey of Elio and Oliver, two strong Characters and how their friendship and relationship evolves, with PURPOSE. . It had all the conventions of a Drama genre in which we get to unfold Elio’s emotions by Emotionally resonating with Oliver. Elio is evolving into an adult, it’s summer in Lombardy, Italy and Elio is with Marzia, his friend in the opening scene. They are waiting for Oliver to arrive at the Pearlman’s summer home. Oliver, the doctural student, is coming to stay with the Pearlman family for six weeks to help Professor Pearlman with his project. Professor Pearlman and Annella Pearlman are the parents of Elio, they are modern sophiscates. They already have strong expectations and admiration of the doctural student Oliver, who they haven’t met in person. Oliver gets out of the small vehicle as he arrives on the scene, he towers over everyone, in all of his handsomness and six foot five frame. Elio is instantly hooked and curious of him, as he leans over the window, Marzia cannot help but notice Elio’s enthusiastic eaction. The parents greet Oliver, Elio runs the steps, Marzia shares a quick kiss with Oliver as Elio greets him and takes his luggage to his room. He will be in Elio’s room for six weeks and Elio in the guest bedroom, something Elio doesn’t mind at all, he just wants to please and we can already feel that we will go down the road with The Character Driven journey. High Stakes Come Within as the story unfolds, leading us into the situations that arise with Oliver being there and Elio’s reaction to him. The first of the scenes is Professor Pearlman suggesting that Elio show Oliver around and Oliver being so excited, he even wants to open a bank account. These Real Life Situations help define the depth in the film and it’s only the beginning. Throughout the film, we see the Challenging, Emotionally-Charged situations and this is the beauty of Call Me By Your Name.

The Outline of the film begins with Elio and Marzia, his good friend, greeting Oliver after he has arrived. Professor Pearlman and Annella, Mrs. Pearlman, Elio’s parents are both grateful Oliver has arrived and everyone is fussing over the fact that Oliver is everything and more they expected. This scene really emphasizes Real Life Situations.

Oliver exits the car and is paraded with hugs and handshakes. He appears very confident, Elio takes his luggage. And it is here for the first time, we see Elio a little curious of Oliver and in admiration.

Marzia says goodbye and gives Oliver a quick kiss to show her friendship and approval of him.

Oliver takes a dive onto Elio’s bed and immediately goes to sleep.

Elio tries to overlook the rudeness and starts to reconsider Oliver being what he had expected.

Elio, a precocious, intelligent 17 year old, gifted in music takes a moment to work on his music studies.

Mafalda, announces dinner is ready, she is a nurturing housekeeper and friend of the family, she has been around Elio since he was born and cooks for the family, she is almost like a grandmother to Elio.

Elio goes to get Oliver, to which he finds out that Oliver wants to skip dinner; he is so exhausted and then Oliver takes it one step further and says, “Later.” Oliver uses this word throughout, in the film. Seen through Elio’s pov in a condesending way

Everyone sits around the table and talks. The Pearlman’s are positive, fun people, they love entertaining friends and they also love art and music. Conversation is about Oliver to which Elio is told, he probably will really grow to like Oliver and Elio says, “What if I grow to hate him?” Everyone is perplexed by his response.

After dinner, the Pearlman’s encourage their only son Elio to play piano for the guests they are entertaining for the evening, but we see Elio resisting the request.

Next day we see the breakfast scene and it is here that Oliver thanks everyone for allowing him to rest. He also announces that he wants to open a bank account. The Pearlman’s are so pleased, Elio watches Oliver’s every move and is put off again, when Oliver clumsily opens a soft cooked egg and the egg spills over.

Malfalda comes to the rescue, helps Oliver out of the jam, Elio is almost jealous of the attention that Oliver is getting. Yet he wants to be involved in this guy’s life. So he asks if he can show Oliver into town.

The guys go into town, Oliver asks Elio, “What do you do for fun here?”

Elio begins to explain to Oliver what he does and Oliver is bored already and says, “Later.”

Oliver takes off. Elio rides back to the house alone.

More of the film leads us down the path of the complicated journey that is starting to develop. We see Elio sitting with his parents and Oliver in a scene where, Oliver and Mr. Pearlman work on the project and Mr. Pearlman tests the Doctural student about where the word, “Apricot comes from?” Oliver’s intelligence takes over. Mr. Pearlman is testing Oliver to see what he comes up with and Oliver blows the Pearlman’s away with his answer, Elio is impressed and says to Oliver. “He does this to everyone each year.” Oliver laughs.

Throughout the film we see the Pearlman’s entertaining guests, there is one scene where everyone is dancing and Elio watches Oliver’s smooth dance moves with Marzia’s good friend, Chiara. They light up the lawn and everyone watches how good they look together, Elio smoking a cigarette is both taken in and jealous. Marzia picks up Elio’s mood.

Later Elio and Marzia go to the lake to swim and Marzia asks Elio if he was jealous because she knows Elio likes Chiara. Elio declares he does not.

The two go swimming at midnight in the lake.

Elio sits at the breakfast table with his dad, Professor Pearlman and Oliver the next day and brags about the fact that Marzia wants him and he could have sex with her if he wanted. His confession he hopes wiill catch Oliver’s attention and it does.

Mrs. Pearlman and Oliver share a tender moment when Oliver helps her pick the apricots from the trees, Elio again is jealous, wants in and needs to be involved somewhere in Oliver’s life.

Later A volleyball party is in session and Oliver is very athletic and he comes rushing over as Marzia suggests that Elio loosen up. Oliver notices and touches Elio for the first time. Elio moves away from him and says, “He is fine.” as Oliver tries to massage his shoulders and claims that Elio is too tense. Elio disagrees, Oliver gives up and takes the hint and goes back to the game.

Later, Elio watches Oliver take off around dinner and he wonders where he is going.

Another scene shows Elio playing Bach on guitar and Oliver laying in the grass enjoying it. Elio finishes and Oliver demands that Elio play it again to which Elio gets up and takes off inside inviting Oliver to go with him.

Inside Oliver gets a rock and roll version of Bach and says, “Okay, whatever.”

Elio, being a bit of a jokester, plays the softer version of Bach on piano and then declares that he wrote it for his brother. Oliver is impressed.

More of Elio’s intense character journey is revealed when everyone thinks that Oliver and Chiara are now a couple. Professor Pearlman invites Oliver to go with him and bring up a Greek Statue out of the Lake, to which Oliver accepts with enthusiasm, Elio asks if he can also go. And he does.

The pair are waiting for Professor Pearlman later in the scene by the car. Oliver almost gets offended when Elio suggests that he should ask Chiara out. Oliver basically tells him to mind his own business and he can be in charge of his own love life.

Elio tries to get Oliver to sit with him in the backseat of the car, Professor Pearlman shows up and notices tension between the pair. He asks Olvier to sit with him in the front seat and Elio can sit alone in the backseat. Elio is slightly jealous again.

At the Archeological site, people are bringing up the Greek statue, it is here that Elio watches Oliver with enthusiasm and curiosity. Oliver and Elio exchange words and Elio basically apologizes by taking the arm of another Greek Statue and extending it out as a handshake for Oliver to grab onto. It’s a peace offering and Oliver laughs, the tension is broken. Their chemistry for one another is obviously growing.

Later they all go swimming in the lake, the scene sets the tone for a fabulous day.

In the driveway once they get home, they go their separate ways, Elio almost trying to make Oliver jealous by taking off with his bike quickly claiming he has a date at the lake with Marzia.

Professor Pearlman and Oliver then go out for a drink.

The next day Elio is bummed out because he didn’t get to see Marzia and she never showed up at the lake.

Oliver asks Elio to read an essay he had written and to critique it. Elio reads it and gives him encouragement saying that it probably made sense when he wrote it. This makes Oliver feel good. Elio feels good that Oliver confides in him and trusts him to critique the piece.

Later Elio and his parents are sitting in their Library as they all listen to a thunderstorm and Mrs. Pearlman reads to Elio and Mr. Pearlman, a love story in German. There is a quote mentioned, and it is here that the reveal of Elio’s feelings are obvious to everyone, not just Elio. “Is it better to speak or to die?” Is the quote. Elio’s response, “I don’t think I’d ever have the courage.” Basically he is saying he wouldn’t have the courage to tell Oliver how he is feeling about him. This is where we get a sense of the Pearlman’s sensing Elio likes Oliver.

Elio and Oliver go into town on their bikes and it is here that Elio and Oliver have an intense conversation. The subtext about WW1 and Elio knows all about the battle. Oliver says, “Is there anything you don’t know?” Where Elio confesses to Oliver, “I don’t know about the things that really matter.”

The scene is beautiful and tender to watch, so dramatic and powerful with all the conventions of the Drama Genre. It builds and builds and builds.

The chemistry grows between Oliver and Elio and it’s clear that Elio wants Oliver and vice versa.

Oliver goes into the shop a moment and tries to change the subject.

When he returns, Elio is slightly embarrassed asks if “They’re going to pretend like the conversaton didn’t take place?” Oliver states , It’s probably best not to talk about these things.

They ride off together in the countryside, Elio takes Oliver to a beautiful, isolated brook where they share their first kiss.

Oliver begins to go out to the local establishment to play poker at night, Elio thinks Oliver is seeing others. But Oliver is trying to not go any further with the situation, even though deep down he wants to.

Elio is sick of waiting around, he calls Marzia to go on a date and meet up. They begin to hang out more and more, finally Elio and Marzia make love.

Elio is no longer a virgin and he experiments with his own sexuality and truly finds Marzia attractive and fun to hang out with. In the end, he can’t help but still want and desire Oliver.

The movie shows The Pearlman’s entertaining more of their friends and how Elio and Oliver share more moments together.

When Elio finally brags he and Marzia had sex, this drives Oliver to write Elio a note. Telling him to grow up and to meet him at midnight.

Elio and Oliver share more conversation and romantic moments.

Elio and Marzia have a falling out, Elio doesn’t know what to say. But Marzia knows something is up and confronts Elio, he has no words. She breaks it off with Elio.

The Pearlman’s entertain more friends and Elio is asked to play the piano and he does beautifully, his mind the whole time on Oliver.

Oliver comes back from being out again and Elio and Oliver finally meet up at midnight.

They make love all night and Oliver gives Elio his special long sleeved shirt that Elio likes.

They go swimming in the morning.

Tension builds when Elio and Oliver part from one another, Oliver not sure if he should have been stronger since he is older and not tempt Elio.

Elio plays a game of hard to get, turns the tables, playing with Oliver’s emotions.

Elio later talks to his mom and she says Oliver is a dear, special person and that she can tell he cares for Elio a great deal. Elio talks fondly of Oliver with her and decides to go meet up with him in town after Mrs. Pearlman notices the Jewish cross necklace Oliver gave Elio.

Oliver is thrilled by Elio wanting to see him and confesses that he didn’t know if Elio wanted to be with him anymore, that he didn’t want to mess him up. Elio reassures him he wants to be with him. The two finally confess their love for one another.

Mr. Pearlman and Mrs. Pearlman decide that Oliver needs to go out of town to complete the project that Mr. Pearlman needed help with, and they thought maybe Elio would like to go with him.

They part with Oliver and hug him like a son, Oliver teases he’s going to just go get his belongings and move back in. They all laugh. The two men leave on the bus and spend funfilled days hiking and seeing the countryside, spending more time together.

They make love one last time after partying all night and then it’s time for Oliver to go back home.

The train station scene is so beautiful to watch as both Elio and Oliver know they had something special with one another. Oliver hugs Elio and lets go. Elio comes back for another hug and Oliver is happy about that. But they both need to part and it’s time for Oliver to get back home.

They finally part as Oliver boards the train. Elio looks on as the train departs. He is sad.

Elio goes to the phone booth and calls for his mom to pick him up. He sobs hard, misses Oliver so much already.

Mrs. Pearlman picks up Elio as he continues to sob, deep down she’s fully aware of what is taking place with her son. She stops at the store a moment when Marzia approaches the car. She and Elio exchange tender words, where she basically tells Elio, she’s not mad, she knows about him and Oliver and that she loves him. He gets out of the car and the two hug and they declare not only their respect for one another, but their friendship.

Back at home Mr. Pearlman and Elio hang out in the library as Mr. Pearlman basically tells Elio that what he and Oliver had was super special and that he wants his happiness and not to fight his tears and pretend that Oliver wasn’t more than a friend, to feel these emotions and to appreciate what he had with Oliver was special.

Last scene is Elio at Christmas/Hannakuh at the Pearlman’s Italian home. Elio picks up the phone as it’s ringing. It’s Oliver, Mr. And Mrs. Pearlman also pick up and tell Oliver they miss him. They wish him congratulations on his engagement, as he had shared with Elio and the Pearlman’s that he’s getting married in the fall. Elio is hurt, Oliver confesses he didn’t know how to tell Elio about his girlfriend back home. Elio congratulates him, but deep down he’s broken up about it and as they hang up the phone, Elio realizes he won’t be seeing Oliver anymore. He sobs gazing into the fireplace..

Mrs. Pearlman calls Elio for dinner.

    He wipes his tears.

    Denise’s Selected Genre=DRAMA

What I learned by doing this assignment is by specializing in one genre, from learning the contents, watching movies in this genre, learning everything I can about this genre, etc. will elevate my writing and paid writing assignments.

    The two movies I selected

Lady Bird- -Original Screenplay written by Greta Gerwig

Call Me By Your Name-Adapted Screenplay -written By James Ivory

    Genre= Drama/Coming Of Age

    Lady Bird

This movie delivered the genre Conventions

-The Characters are rich in a Character Driven Journey, even the supporting cast.

As we see each Characters go down their own path, their own journey, each Character evolves. Our main Character wants to better her life, go to a New England or New York University after she completes senior year, the lengths she will go to, her dreams to make sure this happens gives meaning and PURPOSE of this film . The ups and downs throughout this film as Lady Bird Emotionally Resonates with those around her, given her different situations and how she handles life is rich in emotion and the High Stakes That Come From Within. Challenging, emotionally charged scenes and Lady BIrd’s struggles, interaction with family, friends a great reminder of every day life.

The beginning of the film immediately takes us to a motel room where mom Marion and daughter Lady Bird are getting ready to leave. We immediately see the contrast of the two strong willed and opinionated women from their conversation about the room, it is an indication of more things to come from mom and daughter. The film begins to take us down the path that Lady Bird will experience her Senior year in High Shcool.

The next scene takes us to the women listening to The Grapes Of Wrath on audio, it finishes. Lady Bird immediately wants to turn on music, mom says, “Let’s sit with what we heard.” The scene is rich in character, high stakes from each having their own view on life and it’s emotional elevation with Lady Bird ending up opening the door and jumping out of the car.

Next scenes show Lady Bird and a variety of the cast as they go through their ordinary worlds, we already can see we’re in for a treat. From Lady Bird’s family to her friends, teachers and the Catholic School teachers and staff, it’s a character driven journey.

The scenes are so rich in character development and the characters themselves each one going through their own emotional journey. It’s a 90 minute film that depicts the true feeling of everyday events as we continue to watch it. The highlights of the school staff and how they interact to Lady Bird, declaring she is desiring to go to a College or University outside of her homegrown city of Sacramento, later she depicts it as the City in California that is comparable to the Midwest.

Several scenes show Lady Bird and her best friend Julie as they talk about their life, their futures, their hopes and dreams. Lady Bird and Julie try out for a Drama Theatre audition, Lady Bird wears a special dress and perfoms a vibrant, upbeat song. The Father asks about her name, to which she replies, “That name was given to me, by me.” The aftermath of seeing the results as the young women check to see what part they got. Julie wins the lead part, Lady Bird slightly jealous and less thrilled about her small role in the play.

The movie then takes us down the emotional road of mom Marion and dad Larry, as they talk about the family dynamic of keeping up the bills and Larry losing his job.

Lady Bird being a senior in Catholic High School, she comes home from a dance and Marion goes to her room and proclaims that Lady Bird doesn’t keep up her things that they buy for her, especially her clothes. Mom and daughter clash once more on the decisions each individual makes. Lady Bird asked her mother, “Didn’t you ever just want to come home from a dance and not have your mom on your case?” To which mom replies, “My mother was a full, blown alcoholic.” The scene is so rich in character and delivery.

We meet Miguel, Lady Bird’s brother who is post grad Berkley and his sweet girlfriend Shelly. They are each making their way in life, but chill and layed back, not dynamically charged up like Lady Bird.

The movie takes us down Lady Bird’s path in the classroom too. We get to see Lady Bird and Julie gush over their classmate Jenna and her friends, the rich girls who are perfect and beautiful. Then Lady Bird is in math class with Julie bitches about her grade she received on a test. Stating that she can’t understand it? That her dad is great at math and so is her adopted brother Miguel, to which Julie innocently replies in almost a whisper, “Maybe it’s your mom?”

The who Senior year of Lady Bird is the focus as a boy Danny enters the scene, he too is in Drama Class with the girls, he won the male lead and Lady Bird sees him at the grocery store with his large family. He deeply cares for his siblings, but wants to be an individual too. Lady Bird was having an argument with her mom about the magazine she wanted to buy. Mom Marion states, “Put the magazine down, we don’t buy magazines, rich people buy magazines.”

Lady Bird steals it under her shirt and not too long after that is when she interacts with Danny.

The movie then takes us to several more scenes as we go down the emotional path with Lady Bird and her wants and needs, her family interacting with her as well as the staff.

The Priest who runs drama class, has the class do a game where the first one that cries wins.

He ends up being the first one to cry. The whole Drama Class worries about their teacher.

There’s the scene where she and Danny wait outside after Drama class with another classmate. Talking about the Priest, the classmate confesses she heard that his daughter died and that’s why he became a Priest. Lady Bird and Danny throw a look, shocked, and heartfelt. It’s clear by their faces, they have depth as individuals and both are going through things in their own lives.

The mood lightens when Lady Bird listens as Danny tells her he wants to look like Jim Morrison and do his hair this way. She suggests he borrow her rollers. She also talks about living by the railroad tracks, when Danny asks her where she lives. And says “I live on the wrong side of the tracks.” Danny doesn’t quite catch what she is saying, he just laughs.

Later she asks her brother, “Who is Jim Morrison?” Miguel replies, “He was lead singer in the Doors.”

A dance ensues, the Sister telling the kids to keep distance as they dance slow.

Lady Bird and Julie at the dance and Lady Bird telling Julie she wants to ask Danny to dance. He is thrilled and the night takes off, so much in fact that Lady Bird tells Julie afterwards, she is getting a ride home from Danny.

Danny and Lady Bird become close, Lady Bird writes Danny’s name on her wall.

Danny and Lady Bird share a star in the sky one night as they lay there and watch all the constellations in the sky, simple tender moments. They name it “Bruce.”

Mom and Lady Bird go pick out a dress at the gently used Thrift Store, ffor Thanksgiving, Danny has invited her to his Grandmother’s Thanksgiving feast, Marion lets Lady Bird know she’s disappointed, hoping she could spend Thanksgiving with her. The two women in a fight until the dress is discovered, both instantly go to their thoughts on the dress.

The Thanksgiving moment where Danny picks up Lady Bird, mom Marion gushing all over Danny and telling him she’s so glad to meet him. Danny is thrilled to meet her family and unknowninly and nervously reveals, Lady Bird told me she lives on the wrong side of the tracks, but she really does. He laughs, Marion and Larry throw a look at one another. Lady Bird bounces out in her dress.

Lady Bird and Danny go to Grandmother’s which earlier in the film, Lady Bird and Julie walk by the same Blue house and Lady BIrd, says that someday she wants to own and live in a house that is grandiose. Happens to be the same house. Lady Bird is in awe. Danny’s Grandmother is polite, conservative, there’s even her old portrait of Ronald Regan on the wall, it’s subtext, subtle, yet delivers so highly. . She likes Lady Bird and Lady Bird adores his Grandma, even offers to help set the table and places the settings in such a way, that she even makes the napkins stand out, again the sharing of Lady Bird in more depth just by this one moment.

The night continues, Julie and Danny’s friend now become four, with the fun of dating and what young people do around the holidays. The party they go to where Lady Bird sees rich kid Kyle for the first time playing in the band and she secretly digs him. The late night snacking in the kitchen, where Lady Bird’s mom comes out and greets everyone.

Next scenes we see the completion of the Drama Class and the Play. We see Julie’s heart somewhat crushed when she actually sees her math teacher, who adores her and thinks she is really smart, show up at her play with his pregnant dreams, this shatters Julie’s teenage crush on her teacher. The Priest worried if the play was good enough.

The next scene where the Drama Class goes out for snacks and Lady Bird and Julie wait in line for the bathroom. Where again, Lady Bird admits it’s taking too long. Let’s use the MEN’S room.

Discovery of Danny and Danny’s friend kissing. The shock ensues throughout Lady Bird and Julie as we hear Dave Matthew’s song, “Crash”, and the girls soothe their shock by eating snacks and crying.

Lady Bird goes through more holiday spirit, she and her family spend Christmas, it’s warm and tender moments and we get to see a good side of the family dynamic. Also in this timeframe Larry, Lady Bird’s dad offers to help Lady Bird with the applications for the schools Lady Bird really wants to get into. Lady Bird thanks her dad and says, I can pay for them with the money I saved working at the Coffee House. It’s a sweet moment.

Lady Bird now is taken back into school after the holidays where she not only erased Danny off of her wall, but she now takes an interest in Kyle.

New year, time to move on. Kyle and Jenna are friends and Lady Bird knows that she is going to become friends with these new people in her life. So she eavesdrops into a conversation that Jenna is having with her friends as the girls are surprised when Lady Bird speaks to them.

Lady Bird meets up with Kyle by accident, when she is working as a Barista at the Coffee House, a tender flirtation by both ensues, but broken up by Lady Bird’s boss.

Jenna and Lady Bird hang out together, they go to the Deuce, a parking lot that Lady Bird secretly thinks is stupid, but goes because Kyle is hanging out there, on top of his car, reading.

Kyle and she interact, he is paranoid and suspicious of the world, they talk about cell phones. She confesses she doesn’t own one. Kyle likes it and says, “Good girl, they only want to track people where we are, etc.” Kyle is basically a jerk, but lovable in ways, his dad is dying of cancer, he is into reading, he’s smart, but doesn’t give a shit about money or material things. He’s the bassist in the band, he’s cool, smooth and Lady Bird is falling for him in a big way.

Lady Bird is invited to a party. She goes, Kyle is there. They end up in Jenna’s room. Lady Bird into Kyle, Kyle into Lady Bird, she confesses, she’s still a virgin. Kyle says he is too. They still make out, without having sex.

Lady Bird asks her mom, when is it a good time to have sex. Mom Marion, replies, college is a good age. Lady Bird is quiet as Marion asks her flat out. “Are you having sex?” Lady Bird says “No.” Marion was almost relieved. Then Lady Bird asks about Larry’s pills for depression. Mom goes on about how life isn’t all wrapped up in money, Lady Bird cannot understand the tangent? She knows something’s off and asks. “Why is Dad depressed about money?” Mom knows that’s the reason, but clearly denies it. Lady Bird and her mom share a look. Each know Larry is struggling, but keeping up a positive appearance.

The next few scenes show Lady Bird in her new world with her friends and it even shows her and her old best friend Julie getting into a squabble.

The next scene shows Lady Bird in the gym and there is a woman who speaks of abortion and birth control. Lady Bird makes a snarky comment and is thrown out of school for some days.

More drama as Lady Bird finds out she’s getting into Davis.

Mom Marion is thrilled, Lady Bird pushes the computer and throws a tantrum. Everyone watching her in her family. She and her mom get into another fight after Lady Bird goes after Miguel and Shelly and why do they have all those piercings on their faces?

Jenna and Lady Bird spend time together, but it’s not exactly what she hoped as Jenna speaks about how she can’t wait to be a mom and have kids and grow them up in Sacramento. Lady Bird cannot relate.

Kyle and Lady Bird finally get their intimate moment, it’s instant and no thrill for Lady Bird. But she fakes it as she talks about how she can’t believe that they each are no longer virgins. To which Kyle replies, “He never was a virgin. He lost his virginity a long time ago.” This sends Lady Bird into an oblivion. She accused Kyle of lying, he says he hasn’t lied in some years.

Kyle is moody as they watch the IRAQ war on television. Lady Bird has had enough.

She leaves and sees Kyle’s dad downstairs out from the medicine he’s taking for the cancer.

She waits at the curb, her mom picks her up, she is so sad. She begins to cry inside the car. It’s a tender moment between mom and daughter.

Mom and Lady Bird cheer up by going to do their favorite Sunday afternoon house hunt of rich homes and going into them through Open House.

Jenna calls one day and tells Lady Bird hey I’m at your house, I’m here, knocking. Lady Bird freaks, She had told Jenna she lived in the blue house. Jenna is now there and Lady Bird orders her to leave. Jenna is confused and asks why? Lady Bird confesses it is not her house.

Jenna arrives at Lady Bird’s real home and is instantly put off by it’s surroundings, Lady Bird lying to her. Lady Bird asks if they are still friends. She replies, “Well if you’re still girlfriend of Kyle’s, I guess.”

Lady Bird is shopping with her mom for the prom dress. She and her mom go into the thrift shop and more confrontation ensues. Lady Bird asking her mom, “Do you like me?” Her mom can’t answer and side steps. “I just want you to be the best version of yourself.” To which Lady bird replies, “What if this is the best version?” Lady Bird’s mom frowns.

The next scene takes us with Lady Bird as she opens the envelopes of all the Colleges she applied to, the last one she finally gets on the waiting list. It’s an emotional moment. She is thrilled beyond comparison.

She comes down the steps in her prom dress. The horn honking outside Miguel, Shelly and Larry all comment on how beautiful she looks. Larry says, I can’t believe you’re going to get into a car with a guy who won’t even come to the door to pick you up. Lady Bird is realistic enough to know her Dad is right, but fakes it and carries on. They take a photo of Lady Bird, she exits.

Meanwhile outside, Jenna is making comments about Lady Bird behind her back as Jenna and her boyfriend sit in the backseat of Kyle’s car.

Lady Bird gets in, the whole gang on the way to the Prom, when Kyle receives a phone call and it’s about going to a party and skipping Prom. Everyone agrees, even Lady Bird for a moment, until “Crash”, by David Matthews plays on the radio and Kyle wants to change it. Lady Bird changes her mind and wants to go to prom. Kyle says, “Sure, but I don’t want to go.” She then asks Kyle to take her to Julie’s. Jenna asks, “Who’s Julie?” Lady Bird replies, “She’s my friend.” It’s a tender moment.

Lady Bird shows up unannounced and Julie is so happy, she starts crying. They patch up their differences, Julie confesses she did buy a dress for prom and they go.

The night is fun, festive, they take photos, they dance.

An outdoor scene, showing the bridge in Sacramento is powerful too as the girls talk about their futures.

Graduation day, everyone is done with Senior year.

The family at the restaurant. Danny comes up and congratualtes Lady Bird, she congratuates him. He also congratualtes her on getting on the waitlist at her chosen University. This instantly kills the mood, you can feel it even in the audience. Marion’s reaction to her daughter’s lying, says it all.

The following scenes take us through the summer and Lady Bird’s birthday, she’s now eighteen, she’s growing up, she paints her wall and covers both names, Danny and Kyle. She gets her Driver’s license. She gets some cigarettes and a Playgirl magazine, a Lottery Ticket. She is grown up and she is going to her College of choice in the fall.

Her mom and Lady Bird are still not talking.

Mom secretly writes letters to Lady Bird explaining how she loves her daughter and always wanted the best for her. She throws the letters in the garbage.

Dad picks them up, without Marion knowing about them.

Lady BIrd and her parents driving to the airport. Lady Bird is still trying to break the ice with her mom. She states that she wants her mom to walk her through the terminal. Mom says, “Parking costs too much.”

Lady Bird gets out of the car, rolls her eyes, Larry and Lady Bird continue inside.

Marion drives away and it is this moment, she begins to cry. Realizing how much Lady Bird means to her and that she is crazy not to walk her daughter to the terminal. She instantly stops, finds a parking spot and rushes towards the terminal.

She is greeted by Larry who soothes Marion, stating. “She’ll be back, she’ll be back.”

This is an emotional, gut wrenching scene.

    The plane flies away.

Lady Bird in her new surroundings. Lady Bird rummages through her things and finds the letters her dad secretly put into her suitcsae. She calls, her dad confesses he put them in there, but not to let mom know that she knows.

Lady Bird at a party, another guy she is interested in, but as soon as he opens his mouth, not so much.

Lady Bird gets drunk at the party to tolerate the pompus jerk and to hide her pain, even looks up at the stars and shouts. “Bruce.” It’s clear in this scene, she’s homesick, misses her old life.

The next scene she is in the hospital, Lady Bird wakes and finds a little boy with a patch on his eye and his mom. She and the little boy match eyes. She is forever changed.

Lady Bird finds a church and goes inside to listen to the choir.

Lady Bird calls her mom and dad and emphasizes this is especially for mom. She begins to spill all the things she remembers about Sacramento, how much she misses it and how mom and dad brought her up so well and that she loves them so much and then she says to her Mom, I love you, thank you.

These scenes are precious, gut wrenching, high stakes emotional and the tears flow.

    The End.

    A. Is the set up absolutely clear and does it make it easy to move into the 10 pages?

Deborah’s story, THE PLASTIC BAG, set up is absolutely entertaining and clear, it entices the reader and I wanted to continue.

    B. Did the 10 pages deliver on the genre?

The screenplay sample was true to the Drama genre it contained everything in this genre, including the rich characters, the emotions they are feeling, the fast paced dialogue, highly entertaining and kept me wanting to read more. Billy the lovable klutz, Pammy is the snarky, critical, the sweet baby girl they are trying to raise, doing the best they can with their small income. I could envision these characters in my mind, ALEXA going off in the background in between the dialogue and the action throughout, was an unexpected, entertaining bonus.

    C. Was the writing highly compelling?

Yes, it definitely kept me wanting to continue on the journey of these characters and this plastic bag. What happens next? Where is this going? I felt THE PLASTIC BAG delivered in the true sense of the writing sample, I feel that a producer would want to definitely work with this screenplay and Deborah. So intriguing and very creative! Thanks Deborah for your story and the read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
