Connie Gillam’s Analysis of Groundhog Day.
Eric did a great job of analyzing the movie. This is not my favorite movie; it was hard to see it as a profound one, but I tried to watch it with an open mind.
Phil as the transformable character was egocentric, narcissistic, and a prima donna.
Phil at the end of the journey had grown to appreciate people’s differences and respect them for those differences.
Did I feel like I’d gone on this journey with Phil? No.

Hi, I’m Connie Gillam. I’m not a screenwriter but a novelist. I’ve written and published 6 novels and one short story. I’m currently writing two novels that are in different stages of development.
One novel is about 2/3rds completed but it is missing something. That story was to be bigger, and deeper than any other story I’d written so far.
It wasn’t.
I didn’t know until I took Hal’s analysis of the Matrix that I’d hoped to create a profound story.

What I learned about my current wip was I don’t have strong enough wounds for my characters to drive the story. I tried to envision the ending and realized I couldn’t. Back to the drawing board.

Bagger is almost pulled from Junah’s unconscious self to provide the challenge, the coaching, and the encouragement he needs to play in the tournament–to be the player he once was. My guess is that Bagger will disappear at the end of the story (after Junah wins) as suddenly as he appeared.
In my work in progress, my main character is a soldier returning from war who is experiencing the darkest days of her life. I wonder if one of the other characters in the story can be her Bagger Vance.

I always thought of Kyle coming back through time to save Sarah but never her saving him. Obviously, he dies at the end but for those brief hours, they lived a lifetime. (I think that was mentioned in the movie)
Sarah’s traits: Kyle’s traits:
naive resilient
curious fanatical
strength tough
evolving

His brilliance would indicate a level of sophistication but his inability to solve interpersonal differences with anything other than his fists gives him a caveman mentality.

Hi, I’m Connie Gillam. I’m a novelist. I’ve written and published six books and one short story but no scripts.
I’d like to improve my characterization and give more dimension to the people I create. I hope this class will help.
The most unusual thing about me is I’m 72 years old and hope to keep writing until I’m 100.
