Subject line: Dawn’s Unique Action!
“What I learned doing this assignment is be open to possibilities of changes.
1. Looking at your entire story, what is unique about each of these places:
· Environment: Unknown government agency working autonomously.
· Rules: Superiors are unknown to each other. Superiors are only known to their teams.
· Villain: Breaks rules and goes after a fellow superior.
· Mission: Uncover what happened to her family Her father was a superior in this unknown agency.
· Struggle: The need to find secrets that don’t technically exist.
· Unique Skillset: Ability to manipulate blood enzyme and produce superhuman strength/speed/hearing etc.
· Meaning: No secret stays a secret forever.
· Allies: AC and his superior, elderly couple
· Weapon: Hero’s own body, guns, night vision
2. Brainstorm ways to make one or more of those places unique:
What
if…? hero is trying to keep her family secret? enhancement spread among the
population enhancing some and harming others? her family’s demise had only
been secret to the hero but ordered by the agency? she can inject the
enzyme into AC giving him superhuman powers?
Take
to an extreme. agency in space; It is a family agency, and the hero must
take her place amongst her murderous family heritage; Hero’s own existence
is unknown to anyone.
Specific
to character or environment. Hero is alien placed on earth who refused to
go home so they’re coming for her. Blood enzyme affected by environment
and/or controlled by superior.
Shocking
or Surprising. Superiors are brothers. Her family was destroyed upon her
own father’s command. elderly couple betrays hero
Go
opposite. Superiors are childhood friends. the villain is really the hero.
Superior is outed in front of entire agency and immediately eliminated. Enzyme
designed to block hero’s naturally occurring superpowers.
What
haven’t we seen? The villain is really the long-lost father hero has been
searching for but neither realizes it until hero kills villain.5. Tell us about the improvements that you have made. Introduction of sci-fi element could work well.

Dawn’s Level 3 Action Emotions
What I learned doing this assignment is to take the audience on an emotional ride through action.
SETUP: Hero and partner obtaining needed equipment in large container yard.
Max parks nose of large truck against cement wall. AC watches as she climbs onto the hood. (Suspense)
Max: “C’mon!” He shuffles out of his seat. “We don’t have much time,” Max says as she bends over with her hands cupped for him to step into. (Anxiety)
“I don’t need…” AC starts to say. Max exhales heavily. “We really don’t have time to play this game.” AC steps into her hand and she tosses him up onto the wall. AC struggles to lift his feet over as a blur passes over him and hits the ground. As he gets both legs over and peers down, he sees Max standing there waiting with her arms up. “Well? Let go!” AC drops to the ground beside Max purposely missing her outstretched arms. He gets up rubbing his shoulder. Max rolls her eyes and starts off. AC follows.
Max and AC jog up and down the rows of containers. She stops at the back of a dusty, dark green one. Rubbing the dirt from a small area, Max presses her finger against it. It lights up. She bends to let it scan her face. The back door of the container open with a slow cringe (Suspense). They climb in while booted gunmen spread throughout the yard (Danger).
“It’s empty,” AC says feeling the walls around him. When he turns back to Max, she’s gone (Surprise). “Max!” Suddenly her arm appears grabbing and pulling him through a digitil wall (Surprise). “It only looks empty. It’s like a really big screensaver,”Max says as she opens several lockers hidden behind the fake wall. She grabs a backpack and hands AC a second one. “Guard it with your life,” she tells him. “But I,” he starts but she shooshes him. (Adrenaline)
Max hears crunching gravel outside. The back door jiggles and then opens. Sunlight beams through. Two gunmen peer into the container. Max and AC hold their breath. (Danger)
Gunman: Empty! He closes the door. Max and AC let out breaths. (Relief)
Max pulls a tablet from her bag. A green screen displays with occasional blips popping up and quickly disappearing. “No way to tell how many are out there. They’re rotating shielding won’t let me get a lock,” Max informs AC.
“Rotating sheilding?” AC questions.
“It’s in their suits. Mine is in my blood. Little harder to maintain,” Max answers. She pulls a small patch from the bag and slaps it on her shoulder. She closes her eyes and breathes deeply. “Mmmm…better,”she moans.
“We can’t stay here,” AC warns. “I know that, but I can’t tell what’s waiting for us out there,” Max explains. (Anxiety)
“Well since your tech isn’t working. We’ll just have to do the old fashioned way. Go look,” AC says swinging the backpack over his shoulder. Max adjusts hers as well. They walk through the digital wall. Pausing at the door Max says, “I can’t hear anything.” (Suspense)
They step outside and start back to their truck. They’re almost there. “I don’t like this,” AC says shaking his head (Suspense).
Gunfire breaks out from above (Danger). Several gunmen atop the containers are firing. Max kicks on the containers. The vibration send the gunmen tumbling (Shock). “Split up! I’ll draw their fire. Try to get to truck!” Max instructs. The two run in opposite directions (Adrenaline).
AC dives into the old truck laying across the seat. He searches for keys. Then rips out the wires underneath the steering wheel and hotwires the engine. (Excitement)
Max fights off three gunmen, whirling around them before they can even realize her position (Excitement). She lays them out easily. Above a helicopter approach (Surprise). She runs. She’s met by half a dozen gunmen with the helicopter at her back (Danger). She scans the area looking for a way out. She spots a small yellow truck barreling toward her from behind. It’s AC (Surprise). He watches in shock as Max hurls the bag she’s carrying into the bed of the truck, runs up the side of a containter at and angle using it as a jumpoff to grab the leg of the helicopter rocking it back and forth to strangle it to the ground and then hauling it into the gunment clearing the way like bowling pins (Excitement). She cartwheels into the passenger seat of the truck next to AC as he continues to speed out of the container yard his wide eyes darting between Max and the road (Shock).

Dawn’s Level 1 Action Emotions
What I learned doing this assignment is how to create anxiety, fear, and relief in my action scenes.
Hero follows and captures suspect.
Anxiety: Hero crouches behind bushes. Her eye on the metal trash can where she planted the package. A jogger passes by and slows but keeps going.
Fear: A second jogger approaches, quickly dips his hand in the trash, and grabs the package. The hero jumps out about to give chase only to be attacked by the first jogger. The jogger pulls a gun to shoot, but the hero moving faster than light disarms and incapacitates the jogger. She checks her watch to track the package and sprints off.
Relief: When she catches up to the other jogger, he doesn’t waste any time shooting. The hero rolls through the air dodging every bullet. The stunned jogger is frozen in place. The hero lands in front of him and says, “I believe that’s mine,” and snatches the package from his hands. The hero raises her hand to knock out the jogger, but he faints before she can touch him.

Dawn’s Action Track!
What I learned doing this assignment is to have action follow a logical progression.
1. Action Questions:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
chases, gunfights, fistfights, escapes, kidnapping, explosions, etc.B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?
chases, gunfights, fistfights, escapes, kidnapping, explosions, etc.C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?
First act is the builds on characters, betrayal and sets the chase in motion. Second act is villain’s attempts to capture or kill hero and sets up the villain’s final demise. Third act the villain and hero fight each other. Hero almost kills villain but villain escapes. Villain battles old nemesis. Hero and old nemesis destroy villain together.2. Select the types of action you’ll use.
A. Chase/Pursuit
B. Fight – yes
C. Shootout – yes
D. Rescue – yes
E. Escape/Evade – yes
F. Competition – no
G. Dangerous Situations – yes
H. Interrogation – no
I. Torture – no
3. Sequence the action scenes to deliver your story. Give us your list of action scenes and the purpose of each scene.
· RESCUE: Villain and gunmen break into home to kidnap woman. Shootout ensues with husband who is shot by gunmen. Woman fights back and is shot falling to the ground. Hero (as child) is snatched by heavily armed villain out of living room that’s on fire and where hero’s parents lay dead. PURPOSE: Create mystery about why hero’s family met such a horrible end and empathy for hero.
· FIGHT/CAPTURE: Hero chasing suspect through foliage. Hero’s enhanced hearing locates suspect and gives chase. Hero makes an incredibly long jump crashing down on the suspect who tries to fight but is subdued by hero with obviously enhanced physical abilities (moves extremely quickly, able to flip suspect with one hand). PURPOSE: Show the kind of work hero does and that there’s something physically unique about her.
· SHOOTOUT: Hero and new partner escape gunmen sent by villain to capture her by using specialized tech to slow the gunmen down – doors that tase at the touch, hidden garage that provides escape route, office self-destruct that explodes the office and garage, eliminating gunmen’s ability to follow. PURPOSE: Shows hero’s access to unique technology that’s exciting to watch. Introduces confused partner. Puts hero on the run.
· FIGHT: Hero fights of several gunmen simultaneously using enhanced abilities. Saves partner’s life by disarming gunmen and knocking him out with roundhouse kick. PURPOSE: Shows more of hero’s enhanced abilities. Convinces partner to trust hero since she just saved his life.
· SHOOTOUT: Violence increases to shootout with guns and rocket launcher. Hero evades these powerful weapons using enhanced abilities – swiftly moving out of position to be hit; catching rocket with tool and throwing it back; tossing partner out of harm’s way. PURPOSE: Show the hero’s enhanced abilities and extent villain will go to for capture.
· ESCAPE: Hero rips tires, destroys trucks of gunmen, breaks helicopter blades. Partner hot wires truck and speeds away with hero. PURPOSE: Show amazing abilities of hero and usefulness of partner.
· DANGEROUS SITUATION: Villain sabotages tech that enhances hero’s abilities. PURPOSE: Show hero has weakness and can be defeated. Villain ups the ante by using her own body against her.
· SNEAK ATTACK: Gunmen sneak up on hero endangering innocent people who help hero escape the gunfight with some funny moves (hitting with pan, shining light into night goggles) while hero puts her life in danger to protect them with more practical means – a gun. PURPOSE: Some comedic relief. Shows hero has been hampered but still risks life to protect others.
· DANGEROUS SITUATION: Partner convinces hero to go to his superior before confronting villain. PURPOSE: Shows hero taking risk to trust someone.
· DANGEROUS SITUATION: Hero, partner, and partner’s superior take fight to villain. PURPOSE: Increase odds against villain.
· SABOTAGE: Hero, partner, and partner’s superior sabotage building (cuts power; minimal emergency power comes on); releases smoke bombs into entry to knock out anyone without a mask. PURPOSE: Shows attempt to even the odds.
· SHOOTOUT: Armed guards in masks shoot at them pinning them down. Hero and partner find alternate way out leaving partner’s superior to fight off gunmen (looks bad for him). PURPOSE: Cause doubt about hero’s success.
· FIGHT: Several gunmen attack hero and partner. This fight is much harder without her enhanced abilities. Hero is physically wounded. Partner is suddenly wounded. Hero kills gunmen. She binds up partner’s wound as best she can. PURPOSE: Create more doubt about hero’s success.
· FIGHT: Hero finally comes face to face with villain. She disarms him with a roundhouse kick flinging his gun into the hallway. Vicious fight between them using everything they can get their hands on in the room – table legs, glass tabletops, scissors, etc. Villain has hero pinned down when partner rushes in from hallway and tackles villain. Villain hits partner one time knocking him out. He’s bleeding profusely from previous wound. Hero goes berserk and charges at villain who gets her in a chokehold. She desperately tries to release his arms as he taunts her. Her partner’s superior slowly enters the room with a gun obviously beaten very badly. Villain flings hero to the side as he and partner’s superior begin to fight revealing secrets through their hateful verbal exchange. Villain choking partner’s superior on the floor. Hero rises with gun, now having heard the whole truth from the mouth of the villain – killing her mother, kidnapping her as a child, using her for technology experimentation. She holds gun to villain’s head while in her other hand she holds the tool villain has been using to sabotage the tech that gives her enhanced abilities. She clicks it on, her eyes light up, she throws the gun in the air, and she gives the villain a well-deserved ass whooping in the time it takes the gun to fall back into her hands (she’s moving extremely fast). Then she shoots killing villain. PURPOSE: Final battle that destroys villain and reveals final bits of secrets.

Dawn’s Villain Track!
What I learned doing this assignment is how to create a character’s progression so that it is strong and makes a worthy villain.
I. Villain Track Questions
A. What might be the Villain’s plan to accomplish an evil outcome or to annihilate the hero? The plan could be pre-existing or created on the spot.
· Villain creates plan before hero emerges (as the hero) or realizes what is happening
· Villain’s plan is to seek revenge on a previous nemesis and use hero to achieve other goals that will benefit him. Hero is caught up in this plan before becoming the hero who kills the villain.
B. How many ways can the Villain attack or destroy the hero?
· Send special/secret forces/agents to capture and then eventually kill hero
· Controls tech that’s embedded in hero’s blood to cause physical issues
· Villain himself faces off with hero to kill her
C. What advantage does the Villain have and how can they exploit that in this movie?
· Knows/can see all the options/obstacles hero is going to come up against so therefore stays a few steps ahead of hero
· Hero uses villain’s own methods against him; instead of running from him, she takes the fight directly to him; hero receives help from sources unexpected/unknown to the villain
D. What would be a “fitting end” for this Villain where they pay for what they’ve done?
· Villain realizes his original plan of revenge wasn’t completely successful
· Hero and original nemesis kill villain and are reunited
II. Include labels with each step of their plan. Develop your own set of labels, but make sure you clearly show decisions, plans, and actions your Villain takes.
· PLOT: Take revenge on hero’s family by framing father and killing mother.
· HOSTAGE: Kidnaps hero as a child to train and perform experiments on to see if she has the right levels of blood enzymes to operate specialized government tech.
· DISCOVERY: Years later, discovers hero is searching for information about her parents and who she really is.
· PLAN: Set her up to look like a traitor before she gets any closer to finding out who she is and what he has done.
· CHASE: He sends special forces capture her.
· ATTACK: Special forces attack hero’s lab which sends the hero on the run. Explosions, car chase, secret tech that allows hero to escape.
· TRACK: Special forces track hero using tech in her blood.
· ATTACK: Special forces attack hero again as hero tries to find hidden emergency equipment.
· FIGHT: Special forces fight with hero, but her enhanced abilities easily beat them.
· OBSTACLE: Special forces no longer able to use tech to track hero. Must use conventional means that takes longer to find hero.
· ATTACK: Special forces final find hero and another battle ensues.
· THWART: Villain disables special tech which removes hero’s enhanced ability injuring hero but she narrowly gets away.
· DECISION: Villain realizes hero is bringing the fight directly to him.
· PREPARATION: Villain prepares to fight hero in person.
· FINAL BATTLE: Hero fights villain without enhanced abilities and is close to dying.
· FITTING END: Villain is killed by hero and original nemesis and witnesses their reunification

Dawn’s Hero’s Mission Track
What I learned doing this assignment is how to begin outlining the hero’s mission.
1. Ask the Mission Track questions to discover your Hero’s mission.
A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds? She is trained to steal secret information from top secret locations.
B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal? Prove her innocence after being framed as a traitor.
C. What strong internal and external motivation could drive the hero?
· Internal: Find out what happened to her parents and who she really is?
· External: Clear her name
D. Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this mission against this villain? On the run from her own agency, avoiding and killing some of the agents charged with removing her, finds out what happened to parents, almost dies from special tech going haywire, gaining some help along the way, killing superior who framed her
2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.
Clear Mission: Clear her name find out what happened to her family
<div>
Motivation: Hazily remembers
mother’s death and father leaving and her own kidnapping
</div><div>Inciting Incident: She is
searching for information about who she really is</div><div>
First Action: Her superior
(kidnapper, mother’s murderer) realizes what she’s been secretly looking
for her family’s informationObstacle: Superior wants her

specialized force to capture/kill herOverwhelming Odds: Tech
embedded in her blood begins to threaten her life; she must get back to
headquarters to fix the issueNew Plan: Go to another
superior who might help herFull out Attack: With help of
other superior, get back to headquarters and attack from the insideSuccess: Tech is fixed;
