Dean’s Character Profiles Part 1
- This assignment taught me how to elevate my lead characters, improve them, and serve the story.

2. Pick the type of role your Protagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.

Victim: In trying to help the homeless and hungry, Brooke becomes a victim of the system that feeds on them. She fights to save herself and the homeless. Once she discovers an insidious truth about how the system works, she will never be the same.
3. Pick the type of role your Antagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.

Villain: The villain is Brooke’s father, Mr. Hacker, and the people who work for him. They have created an evil and hidden system to solve homelessness and hunger problems. This system will unknowingly take Brook in as a victim.
4. What other characters might be necessary?

Supporting characters:
- Protagonist:
- Friends of Brooke that come with her to help feed the homeless and then become fodder for the system.
- Other victims in the system that help Brook along the way.
- A member of the antagonist team that becomes an ally of Brooke.
- Antagonist:
- Underlings and associates that keep Mr. Hacker’s identity as the top villain hidden and carry out his plans.
- An ally of Brooke’s that turns out to be an enemy working for Mr. Hacker.
- Minor roles:
Characters that help move one or two scenes along.
- Friends of Brooke that start on her journey and are killed by the system.
- Victims of the system that Brooke encounters.
- Background characters:
- Students at Brooke’s social events.
- Homeless victims that are on the street and processed through the system.
- Business people in Mr. Hacker’s office.

Hero / Victim. Idealistic and driven to save the world from her position of privilege. She puts herself in danger, assuming she’s above consequences. - Age range and Description:
Female, early 20s, physically fit, driven. - Internal Journey:
From assuming that everything will be easy for her to feel good about herself to discovering that the system consumes anyone who gets in the way and doesn’t care who she is. - External Journey:
From being privileged and insulated in her world to being victimized and treated like anyone else in the outside world. - Motivation:
Overcome her guilt of being privileged. - Wound:
Brooke has a repressed memory of seeing her father kill her mother when she was young. - Mission/Agenda:
To feed the hungry and homeless so she can overcome her guilt over being privileged. - Secret: On her journey, Brooke hides from others that she is wealthy.
- What makes them special?
Brooke has intense drive and determination.
- Mr. Hacker (Brooke’s father, antagonist)
- Role in the story: Villain/predator. He uses his wealth to create an immoral way of getting rid of the homeless and feeding the hungry. This process makes him more money and gets the approval of his peers.
- Age range and Description:
Male, late 40s, dresses and acts like he has wealth and privilege. - Internal Journey:
From believing that the world is his to consume to realizing that he has no control and can be consumed. - External Journey:
From being wealthy and powerful to being eaten by the system he created. - Motivation:
To make money and create power by getting rid of the useless and feeding them to the living. - Wound:
Always trying to prove himself to the memory of his unloving and disapproving father. - Mission/Agenda:
To make himself powerful and recognized by the world government by controlling population growth and getting rid of those who suck off of society. - Secret:
He killed his disapproving wife over rage against his disapproving father and got away with it. - What makes them special?
His ability to amass power and persuade people to do what he wants. His network of employees implements his plans.

Dean’s Transformational Journey
- What I learned doing this assignment is the distance my character will travel from the beginning to the end of the story.
You send a Hero on a journey that the audience gets to live.

2. Who is your Hero, and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?
- Hero: Brooke Hatcher

Internal Journey: From idealistic and entitled to seeing reality and knowing that you can’t control everything.
- External Journey: From rebelling against the system of privilege and ease that her family built to being consumed by it.
3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

Old Ways: Rebelling against her entitled family and businessman father.
Taking on virtue signaling causes to change the world, not knowing the possible negative results.
Naively putting herself in harm’s way to prove her points.
Not having hard challenges in knowing what she’s capable of. - New Ways: Destroying her family.
Being changed for the worse by taking on her causes.
Fighting under and losing to the system she once rode on top of.
Having to fight and being harmed in ways she can never reverse.

3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.
4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.
5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.
6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.
