    Ramsey’s Budget

    3. Learned? Meh.

    1. Decrease the budget? I’d keep these:

    MAIN VARIABLES

    Number of Locations

    Expensive locations

    Number of characters

    Special effects

    Crowd scenes

Stunts, Chase scenes, and Fight scenes

    Special sets

    SECONDARY VARIABLES

    Rights to music, brands

    Explosions and Firearm

    Weather — Rain

    Water and underwater scenes

    Night scenes

    Helicopters, aircraft, drone shots

    Green screen work

    Extensive Make-up

    2. Then go through the list and tell us what you might add if your budget was quadrupled.

Stunts, Chase scenes, and Fight scenes

    Special sets

    Rights to music, brands

    Explosions and Firearm

    Weather — Rain

    Green screen work

    Extensive Make-up

    Ramsey Writes Great Hope/Fear!

Learned: Must type in the post and not copy/paste to avoid HTML posting disaster.

Additionally, sometimes it helped to fill in the segments out of order.. just write what I know to get the ideas down, then go through and alternate fate: Good/bad.

HIGH CONCEPT: When you love fighting but refuse to kill, what happens when you’re kidnapped and forced to fight for your survival.

REASON FOR CONTAINMENT: Kidnapped and secluded to a shipping container or semi-trailer.

    CHARACTERS:

DREW: Loves to fight but refuses to break Rule #1 only to find himself forced to do just that.

FELIX: Drew’s brother who hates fighting and wants to prove he’s smarter that Drew by appealing to Seth and getting free.

SETH: A trucking company owner and past MMA champion that kidnaps fighters to fight against each other to-the-death as a game of sport for elite gamblers to watch.

    Act 1

HOPE: Drew walks to his car feeling good because he didn’t physically fight his brother and he did win the fight with the guy that he did fight.

FEAR: Drew realizes Felix has his keys to his car because Felix has his jacket.

FEAR: Seth drives up to Drew and solicits him to fight. Drew turns down the offer.

HOPE: Drew walks to the restaurant where he can try to call Felix.

HOPE: Drew wakes up to see Felix is in the room with him.

ACT 1 TP: Seth tells Drew and Felix they will have to fight others to the death to survive.

    Act 2

NEW PLAN: Break out of the shipping container. Drew tells Felix he’s sorry for earlier; in regards to not meeting at the restaurant like they planned. Felix pushes back and blames him for being kidnapped.

HOPE: Drew ‘knows’ he can get them out.

WOUND: Drew says he loves to fight but can’t take a life. He had a ‘friendly-fire’ incident in the Army and it’s derailed his ability to focus or want anything other than to not have done it.

HOPE: Banging comes from inside the container. A guard opens the door. Another stands outside the door.

FEAR: Drew plays dead. The guard stands over him. Drew overtakes the guard but the other guard closes the door.

HOPE: Drew and Felix have a gun and a hostage.

FEAR: Seth enters asks for the gun. Drew says No. Seth shoots the guard and points the gun at Felix. Seth asks for the gun. Drew throws it at him. Seth tells Drew to come with them.

HOPE: Drew, handcuffed in a moving semi-trailer, sizes up his combatant, Bo.

FEAR: There is a wall full of hand weapons that will drop at any point.

HOPE: Drew jumps up and gets some solid punches into Bo.

FEAR: Bo was tiring him out and kicks Drew’s ass all over the trailer.

HOPE: Drew catches Bo in a choke hold.

FEAR: Drew looks up at the weapons and can’t emotionally continue to kill to survive.

FEAR: Felix is taken to fight.

HOPE: Jules enters the container and says she will help them escape under one condition.

FEAR: The condition is to help her husband also escape. Drew says No. Jules closes door.

    FEAR: Jules is unconscious.

    HOPE: Drew gives her CPR.

FEAR: Seth kicks Drew into the water; they have to fight first.

HOPE: Drew kicks Seth’s ass with a sweep and choke hold.

FEAR: Seth punches Drew’s ab wound.

HOPE: Jules coughs / regains consciousness.

WORST: Seth stands up with a knife. Seth steps towards her.

HOPE: Drew stabs Seth with his knife.

    Ramsey’s Delivering Multiple Layers!

(I don’t have access to the audio recording so I’m not sure what I’m missing. It would be worthwhile to have Support reply with assistance)

Learned: Twists / Reveals don’t always work. I enter the arena with extreme caution.

I think NOPE has an example at the end when the alien turns to a ‘butterfly’ – that bumped me and turned me off on the movie. USUAL SUSPECTS on the other hand did a fantastic job of setting up the chess pieces for the final reveal. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK set up the ark’s power perfectly so we were ready for the big reveal at the end when we see it destroy the Nazis.

    1. Brainstorm potential plot layers.

    <div>Major scheme revealed:</div><div>

Surface Layer: Two men fight in a moving semi-trailer.

Beneath That: Seth and Tristan live-stream the video of the fighters.

Beneath That: A gambler pays for a weapon.

How Revealed: The weapon drops inside the trailer and is used by one of the fighters.

    Mystery revealed:

Surface Layer: Seth is the boss and Tristan is his bullied assistant.

Beneath That: Tristan connects with a criminal boss and finds their contact info.

How Revealed: Tristan meets with the criminal ring after Seth is killed at the end and continues the enterprise as the Big Boss.

Thought it was one thing, but it is another:

Surface Layer: Two men fight to the death

Beneath That: Drew and Felix are kidnapped.

How Revealed: Seth tells Drew and Felix they will have to fight to survive.

    </div>

    3. Brainstorm potential location layers.

<div>Hidden operation: Inside an abandoned warehouse is a state-of-the-art live-stream video room plus dozens of containers that hold hostages.
</div><div> Surface Layer: Seth and Tristan operate the live-stream in a video room.</div><div>

Beneath That: Inside an abandoned warehouse are dozens of shipping containers. Inside a container is Drew and Felix.

How Revealed: Seth at the warehouse enters the video room and catches Tristan talking to a criminal boss.

    Ramsey’s Character Depth!

    What I learned doing this
assignment is… it’s a lot of fun to break down the aspects of the
lead characters to see what drives them. I think this is the area
where it’s easy to ‘Jump the shark’ and misstep. Often I add a detail
that is later judged as ‘Not Believable’, by a mentor. This is a good
first draft. (Glad there are only 3 characters; sorry it’s long)

    INTERNAL
    CHARACTER DEPTH: DREW (HERO)

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to survive and protect his brother.

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to be forgiven by his brother, Felix for leaving when their
    mother was dying
    of cancer.

    SECRET:
He was involved in a ‘Friendly-fire’ incident during a midnight raid
    in the Army.

    WOUND:
Left his dying Mother to join the Army to pay her medical bills
    before she died.

    He
couldn’t let her die without trying costly experimental procedures.
    She asked him to keep
it a secret since his younger brother would feel guilty for not doing
    enough.

    SUBTEXT:
Drew doesn’t want to mention paying for his mother’s bills. He
doesn’t want Felix to know because maybe Felix will feel bad that he
    didn’t do enough.

    “Nobody
wins when it comes to who helped our dying mother the most”

    LAYERS:
He loved to fight until he accidentally killed a buddy, during an
    overseas operation.

    Now,
he only fights when he has to. And his only goal is to stop the
    fight.

    CHARACTER TO
    CHARACTER:

    CONFLICT:
Brothers have mommy issues. Seth doesn’t value life; just money and
    Drew is opposite.

    HIDDEN
    AGENDA: Brothers want to escape.

    CONSPIRACY:
Tristan, Seth’s side Kick will help Drew to escape and stop Seth.

    Tristan
    will take Seth’s business.

    INTRIGUE:
Drew continues to try and escape.

    CHARACTER
    SITUATION:

    DILEMMA:
Drew has to kill the fighter to survive thus breaking his #1 rule –
    no killing.

    SECRET
IDENTITY: Drew is a combat veteran and highly skilled in fighting. It
makes him a strong opponent against Seth when they fight.

    INTERNAL
    CHARACTER DEPTH: FELIX (DREW’s BROTHER)

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to survive and protect his brother.

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to forgive Drew for leaving when their mother was dying of
    cancer.

    SECRET:
He wanted to be like his older brother Drew and have a childhood then
    leave when their mother
got terminally ill. She always talked about how great Drew is and it
    made him jealous.

    WOUND:
He didn’t get to have a childhood; instead he rushed home after
    school to take care of
his mom. He feels ashamed for wanting to have had a childhood like
    Drew.

    SUBTEXT:
Felix thinks Drew is selfish and doesn’t consider anyone else.

    “Drew’s
happy to land in jail and ruin everyone’s night when they have to
    bail him out”

    LAYERS:
He has a lot of anger built up and actually would really like to
    physically assault someone if he
    could get away with it.

    CHARACTER TO
    CHARACTER:

    CONFLICT:
    Brothers have mommy issues.

    Felix
likes money like Seth but Felix hates violence against innocent
    people.

    HIDDEN
AGENDA: Brothers want to escape. Felix is willing to make a deal with
    Seth to get out.

    CONSPIRACY:
Felix is willing to make a deal with Seth to get out.

    (When
Drew returns from the fight, Felix had made a verbal deal with Seth
    via a payment but Seth
doesn’t hold to the deal and Felix has to fight anyway)

    INTRIGUE:
Felix tries to make a deal with Seth.

    CHARACTER
    SITUATION:

    DILEMMA:
Felix has to fight to survive but has never won a fight so he
must do what he can do to survive.

    SECRET
    IDENTITY: Felix is a well-paid office jockey that’s jealous of Drew;
except with finances but when Felix loses that too, Felix reverts to
the pissed off 10 year old, mad at his older brother for having it
all and mad for not helping their mom, while she was dying of cancer.

    INTERNAL
    CHARACTER DEPTH: SETH (VILLAIN)

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to be rich without getting caught.

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to feel secure, which stems from growing up in extreme
    poverty.

    SECRET:
He took money to lose a major MMA fight. He thought he would lose
    anyway.

    WOUND:
His family was dirt poor and he learned early how to fight to
    survive.

    SUBTEXT:
Growing up in poverty he saw lives are worthless. So he treats
    everyone like shit.

    “I
had to play Russian roulette with crime; pick one that doesn’t kill
    you.”

    LAYERS:
He was a great fighter but had a shelf-life; limited abilities.

    CHARACTER TO
    CHARACTER:

    CONFLICT:
Seth wants the organization to grow but it’s attracted police
    attention and Drew
wants to kill Seth for the death of his brother, Felix.

    HIDDEN
AGENDA: Seth only cares about himself. He will say anything to get
    more money and to
    stay away from the police.

    CONSPIRACY:
Seth will take Felix’s money but won’t let him or any fighter
    survive.

    INTRIGUE:
Seth continues to grow the viewership of his live-streamed fights.

    CHARACTER
    SITUATION:

    DILEMMA:
Seth wants to make more money, which requires more viewers but that
can bring more attention from the police.

    SECRET
IDENTITY: Seth is a greedy, violent person but he’s a product of his
    environment.

    BREAKDOWN of
    DREW:

    CHARACTER:
Drew is a military combat veteran who was kidnapped to fight to the
death and has to fight to survive.

    SECRET:
He was involved in a ‘Friendly-fire incident during a midnight raid.

    WOUND:
Left his dying Mother to join the Army to pay her medical bills
    before she died.

    He
couldn’t let her die without trying experimental procedures.

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to survive

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to be forgiven by his brother, Felix for leaving when their
    mother was dying.

    HIDDEN
AGENDA: Brothers want to escape. Seth wants to expand the enterprise.

    DILEMMA:
Drew has to kill the fighter to survive thus breaking his #1 rule –
    no killing.

    CONSPIRACY:
Tristan, Seth’s side Kick will help Drew to escape and stop Seth. Tristan
    will take Seth’s business.

    BREAKDOWN of
    FELIX:

    CHARACTER:
Felix is an office clerk who was kidnapped to fight to the death and
    has to fight to survive.

    SECRET:
He wanted to be like his older brother Drew and have a childhood then
    leave when their

    mother
got terminally ill. She always talked about how great Drew is and it
    made him jealous.

    WOUND:
He didn’t get to have a childhood; instead he rushed home after
    school to take care of
his mom. He feels ashamed for wanting to have had a childhood like
    Drew.

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to survive

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to forgive Drew for leaving when their mother was dying of
    cancer.

    HIDDEN
AGENDA: Brothers want to escape. Felix is willing to make a deal with
    Seth to get out.

    DILEMMA:
Felix has to fight to survive but has never won a fight so he
must do what he can do to survive.

    CONSPIRACY:
Felix is willing to make a deal with Seth to get out.

    (When
Drew returns from the fight, Felix had made a verbal deal with Seth
    via a payment but

    Seth
doesn’t hold to the deal and Felix has to fight anyway.

    BREAKDOWN of
    SETH:

    CHARACTER:
Seth is an extremely successful ex-MMA fighter that now runs a Fight
to the Death match at his Trucking Company inside moving
    semi-trailers.

    SECRET:
He took money to lose a major MMA fight. He thought he would lose
    anyway.

    WOUND:
His family was dirt poor and he learned early how to fight to
    survive.

    MOTIVATION:

    EXTERNAL
    – Want: to be rich without getting caught.

    INTERNAL
    – Need: to feel secure, which stems from growing up in extreme
    poverty.

    HIDDEN
AGENDA: Seth only cares about himself. He will say anything to get
    more money and to
    stay away from the police.

    DILEMMA:
Seth wants to make more money, which requires more viewers but

    that
can bring more attention from the police.

    CONSPIRACY:
Seth will take Felix’s money but won’t let him or any fighter
    survive.

    3.

Comparing the 3 profiles I see:

Drew (hero) loves to fight, cherishes life and doesn’t care about money.

Felix (Drew’s brother) hates to fight, cherishes life and cares about money.

Seth (villain) loves to fight, doesn’t care about life and cares about money.

    Ramsey’s Right Characters!

What I learned doing this assignment is… the characters should fit together like a puzzle and (I’m adding) they should have opposing views on the Central Question.

    2)

The two main brothers differ on: Is physically fighting ok?

Hero loves to fight. Brother hates it.

The villain creates fight to the death matches. Hero is not ok with crossing that line.

    3)

Seth (Big bad) creates the fight to the death matches. Drew (Hero) and his brother (Felix) must survive in alternating fights, while also working out their own personal issues with each other.

    4)

Drew always settled his problems by jumping into a fight. He joined the Army to join the biggest fight he could find, which inadvertently shaped his perspective of the importance of life; so if he’s pushed into a corner to fight he will win, while also not trying to kill the other person.

    A la BATMAN’s Rule #1 – no killing.

Felix, Drew’s younger brother, is the peacemaker and isn’t physically fit, nor ever won a fight.

Seth, the villain, is a champion MMA fighter that turned a trucking company into a fighting to the death criminal enterprise with elite streamers gambling on the fights.

    Ramsey’s Great Hook!

    A. Hows it going? Currently I’m just sharing my story. I don’t yet see the value but I will trust interaction and feedback will prevail Haha

    B. What did I learn? Nothing (not trying to be mean) but we are just on lesson #2.

My main method of storytelling is to swap components, which we are doing and I do love the exercise.

    1. Brainstorm possible major hooks:

    A. Intriguing Contained Setting: Shipping container and moving semi trailer.

    B. Unique Device: Fight to the death.

    C. Unique Monster/Villain: MMA fighter that owns trucking company/ streams deadly fights.

    D. Mystery: Will the two brothers survive? Will they stop Seth? Can the police help?

    E. Impossible goal/Unsolvable problem: Survive / Stop Seth and fighting ring

    F. Unique layers: Seth’s sidekick will take over the business when Seth dies at the end.

    2. Ask high concept question:

-Having to do with BLOODSPORT, what haven’t we seen before?

3 – 5. Exchange components, try new ones and pick the best:

    -LIST:

    A. Kidnapped fighters.

    B. Shipping containers and moving semi trailer.

    C. Fight to the death.

    D. Trucking company owner and elite gamblers.

    3. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…I really like discussing movies and I also enjoy jumping into my stories to make them better so that others want to see them on the silver screen.

ASSIGNMENT PART 1: Select Your Project

I have to admit Lesson 1 took the fun out of my 3 big crowd shots haha.

    1. Based on the guideline any of the 5 stories will work. One comedy/drama feature that takes place in a comic books store would work the best but it isn’t the story that I want to work on right now. I’d rather reconstruct my thriller/horror feature because I think it has the largest appeal and it’s easiest to pitch.

Yes DEADLY PAYLOAD (horror/thriller) can be a contained story, pitched in 30 words and is extremely unique while also stacked with comps like: GREEN ROOM and BLOOD SPORT.

ASSIGNMENT PART 2: Adjust a Produced Movie to Covid Guidelines

    TITLE: GREEN ROOM (2015) horror/thriller

    AS THEY DID IT:

    A. People – Band of 4 people, a dozen killer Nazis, two police officers and an audience of 40 people.

    B. Stunts – A dozen violent stunts.

    C. Extras – 40 in the audience.

    D. Wardrobe – Punk rock, skinhead outfits and two police uniforms.

    E. Hair and Make Up – About a dozen Special FX moments through the whole film.

    F. Kids and Animals – 2 pitbull dogs.

    G. Quarantine – Audience of 40 people only during parts of the first third of the film.

    COVID GUIDELINE VERSION:

    A. People – Band of 4, 6 killer Nazis, two cops and no audience.

    B. Stunts – Limit to 6 violent stunts

    C. Extras – None

    D. Wardrobe – Incorporate more plain cloths outfits; just accessorize.

    E. Hair and Make Up – Limit Special FX moments to 6 instead of a dozen.

    F. Kids and Animals – Keep the 2 dogs.

    G. Quarantine- Just have to isolate cast and crew.

Thank you. Any feedback is appreciated. Rams~

That I will keep the processes, strategies, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class confidential, and that I will NOT share any of this program either privately, with a group, posting online, writing articles, through video or computer programming, or in any other way that would make those processes, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class available to anyone who is not a member of this class.

    2. That each writer’s work here is copyrighted and that writer is the sole owner of that work. That includes this program which is copyrighted by Hal Croasmun. I acknowledge that submission of an idea to this group constitutes a claim of and the recognition of ownership of that idea.

I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.

    3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.

    4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.

    5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.

    6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

    Hi all,

    1. I’m Ramsey Anderson

    2. 3 feature scripts (Action, Comedy/Drama, Thriller) and a TV series of a game show for club DJs.

    3. My goals are to read more scripts, improve the ones I have completed and sell one of the features when the writer’s strike ends.

    4. I love everything about production; from writing and producing to post production with motion graphics and color/ sound design.
