    Geoff Gwillim’s Actor attractors!

VISION: I am a writer of popular and critically acclaimed films, enjoying and grateful for every aspect of my creative life, consistently writing what and as I choose wherever I choose to live in the world, loving the wonderful experiences my writing enables me to have.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT IS:

Developing character means getting inside them and building their persona .. building out the cast of characters in this way will enable the palette for the story to unfold in the writing

    Characters:

    Garrett

    Tom

    RB

Aayushi – Sanskrit ‘one who is blessed with a long life.’

    Lead Character Name: Garrett

    Role: Protagonist

    1. What about this role would cause an actor to want to be known for it?

Edgy, talks to his dead best
friend, travels into the depths of the planet to uncover ‘the answers’ to
enable humanity to move to a higher plane, all while transcending his own
demons .. and he gets the girl as well.

    2. What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in your story?

Has already been through hell, now begins his
    journey of redemption and understanding
Transformational journey – from seeing no
value to his life to understanding time/space, origins of life on Earth
    and where to from here

    3. What are the most interesting actions the Lead could take in the script?

    Despite suffering from severe PTSD,
claustrophobia and fear of fire as result of past life events, travels
through narrow tunnel and flames .. transcends death and is ‘reborn’

    4. How can you introduce this role in a way that could sell it to an actor?

Charismatic but broken leader, recruited for a
mission that puts him through ultimate trials before giving him the chance
to save himself .. and all humanity

    5. What could be this character’s emotional range

From broken / suicidal to seeking / experiencing
to love and understanding – re-emergence of the greater man

    6. What subtext can the actor play?

    · In the beginning he is lost and suicidal, overwhelmed by the events in his world, not realising his own journey will mirror, and deliver, potential salvation for the world.

    7. What’s the most interesting relationships this character can have?

    ·
    Relationships with his dead best
friend Tom, who travels his own journey together with Garret, with RB (the
Reclusive Billionaire) and with Aayushi (Sanskrit ‘one who is blessed with a long life.’)

    8. How will this character’s unique voice be presented?

    Self-aware, self-deprecating
and self-referencing .. he is educated,
quotes Camus, Sartre, Marcus Aurelius, Nietzsche etc., which is appreciated
by RB .. occasionally answers his (unseen by others) dead best friend Tom,
thus he appears talking to himself

    9. What could make this character special and unique?

    Charismatic and analytical
.. cool demeanour (not theatrics), deep, intense and tortured .. transforms through
    experiences and realisations.

Geoff Gwillim – Actor Attractors for Interstellar

VISION: I am a writer of popular and critically acclaimed films, enjoying and grateful for every aspect of my creative life, consistently writing what and as I choose wherever I choose to live in the world, loving the wonderful experiences my writing enables me to have.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT IS:

A great movie I had never seen before .. definitely one McConaughey’s best, he must have been pleased with his decision to refuse any more rom-coms .. and from the get-go/analysing the attractors I could see why the lead character would have been incredibly attractive for any A-list actor as well as the script for producer.

    Actor Attractors for Interstellar

    Lead Character Name: Protagonist COOPER

    1. Why would an actor WANT to be known for this role?

Mega cool astronaut who does it all: crosses event horizon goes through a black hole and survives, realises/acts across time/space and enables the survival of humanity (potentially).

    2. What makes this character the most interesting character in the movie?

Cooper is the central driver of humanity’s endeavour to survive beyond the dying Earth. He enables the character arc of every other character, from Murph to Mann to Brand etc., his experiences and the realisations they drive within the story are the message of the movie.

    3. What are the most interesting actions the Lead takes in the movie?

Travels through a wormhole, surfs a 500’ high wave on a planet in another galaxy, crosses event horizon into a black hole and transcends time/space, delivers to his young daughter the data that will provide humanity the possibility of survival beyond a dying Earth, returns to meet his now-aged and dying daughter before again heading off to help Brand provide a new home for humanity.

    4. How is this character introduced that could sell it to an actor?

A rugged farmer with two young children in a dustbowl dying farm region on a dying Earth, a former astronaut who didn’t make it into outer space. Taking his kids to school when they are buzzed by a low-altitude drone, charges after it blind across corn fields to take control and land it safely on Earth after a decade or more in the heavens.

    5. What is this character’s emotional range?

Love across time/space .. from immense sadness having to leave Murph and Tom and then watching communications from his now-adult children across time/space .. to compassion for Brand, understanding her love while opting to go to the other planet .. from constrained exultation at travelling across space, ultimately ‘conquering’ time and surviving.

    6. What subtext can the actor play?

Cooper is driven by the ultimate human urge to re-unite with his children and have them understand/accept his need to have been away through their lives (Query – why Tom didn’t feature at all in resolution although Murph’s numerous and previously-unseen ‘family’ surrounded her death bed .. why was Cooper not included into ‘family’, rather separate from it .. Answer – Tom was a secondary character compared to Murph, Cooper ‘volunteered’ to separate from family/humanity on Earth/time).

Every action, while driving the narrative forward towards saving humanity, is actually more personal for Cooper.

    7. What’s the most interesting relationships this character has?

Brand is Cooper’s non-romantic female lead, he understands and is compassionate for her as-yet-and-unlikely-to be-realised love for Edmond. Having achieved his mission of ‘solving the gravitational anomaly’ thus time/space and surviving to re-unite with Murph, he ultimately leaves Earth again to join her in continuing endeavour to save humanity (interesting, leaving open option for Interstellar II)

    Cool working relationship with TARS.

    8. How is this character’s unique voice presented?

Cool-constrained capability while conveying love, initiative and resilience that enables him to triumph.

    9. What makes this character special and unique?

The best pilot/astronaut ever, only one (except aging Professor Brand) with children to love/want to protect and to enable their survival/the survival of humanity.

    Geoff Gwillim’s Genre Conventions

VISION: I am a writer of popular and critically acclaimed films, enjoying and grateful for every aspect of my creative life, consistently writing what and as I choose wherever I choose to live in the world, loving the wonderful experiences my writing enables me to have.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT IS:

Exploring and employing the genre conventions enables ‘fleshing out the bones’

    Title: Eighteen Deep

Concept: A former submariner turned fireman suffering PTSD is recruited for
an exploratory mission when the earth’s crust is torn apart, only to
discover the answer to some of life’s biggest questions

    Genre: Sci-Fi

    Conventions for Sci-Fi:

Purpose: To explore implications of technologies, alternate worlds/pasts/futures

Fantastic worlds / our world with twist

Derives from Science and its potentials past/present/future

See things alien to current / known reality

Probes social issues, may make social comment

World/Science is the environment. The sub-genre gives us the story.

    Act 1:

    Opening:
    Garrett experiencing
nightmare, suffering torment and the guilt of his past – fire, confined
spaces, the dead, the death of his best friend Rob.

Garrett is isolated in a wilderness cabin. Dishevelled, he holographically connects with his estranged wife back in the city but the exchange is unsatisfying, they argue re the child. He talks to his dead friend Rob, continues drinking and contemplating his end

Inciting Incident: A stranger arrives in LAV (low altitude vehicle) and extends invitation from his employer for
Garrett to join a mysterious mission ‘of enormous importance .. time is
short’ for which he is ‘uniquely qualified’. Garrett refuses, the stranger
places a contact on the table and leaves. Garrett ignores it and resumes.

    Turning Point: Drunk
and determined he staggers to a high bluff, is confronted and challenged
by Rob .. then .. the Earth moves!

    Act 2:

New plan: Garrett returns to city in LAV. Extensive damage and many deaths, police patrol while bodies are removed by emergency crews, news of incidents around the world mixed in with trivial news. The
city is eerily quiet, people docile and unconcerned, consumed in ‘immersive
reality’ of porn, sport, games and game shows.

Garrett travels to the stranger and his employer, an extremely old and reclusive billionaire named RB, in a high tower over the city, across which damage is clearly visible. RB explains he has long been researching and that current events are tied to a greater, hidden truth. He proposes to investigate the ocean’s immense depths, now even greater and newly-exposed as result of global shifts .. ‘the answer is down there .. but there are problems’

Garret joins the mission, he and RB travel by HHAV (hyper-sonic high altitude vehicle) to the custom submarine base, meets international specialists recruited including audiologist and code-breaker. Garrett records a farewell message for wife and child, mission departs including RB

Plan in action: Mission underway as the specialists engage, undercurrent
tensions and conflicts due to nature of (is this suicide?) mission as well
    as other unknowns/hidden agendas.

RB and audiologist explain and demonstrate his research on energies delivered via sound transmissions through water and how in addition to known ie whales, there are myriad other sound transmissions .. from other sealife ‘and others’ .. has been going on for millennia .. references in ancient times. RB demonstrates how they have ‘broken the code’, developing the ability to transmit as well as receive, and have recently begun sending messages throughout the ocean.

As they descend, Garret and others are experiencing intensifying nightmarish visions. They begin encountering extreme heat and energy pulses, together with the extreme depths creating impassable barrier to descent and a threat to the sub, which was not designed to travel to deeper than 12,000 metres while the depth below them is unknown, their instruments unable to ascertain a bottom.

    Midpoint Turning Point: Garrett revisits
nightmare state and pushes beyond barrier, Rob provides him with guidance.
They adapt the transmission tech, using sound
    energy
to enable the sub to traverse the barrier and descend into the extreme
    depths below.

    Act 3:

Rethink everything: Realisation that collective energy, experience and
consciousness are essential if the mission is to advance

    New plan: Working
together in different way, they begin experiencing empathic connection and
intention. Garrett and others begin having dream incidents pointing to
expanded consciousness and potential as well as abyss of limitless
suffering. They realise they are being tested by external probing energies,
having challenging realisations even as their sanity comes under strain while
the sub descends into the utmost depth

Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift As the sub approaches
ultimate depth resistance suddenly building towards catastrophic failure.
Enormous fire walls flaring around them, energy pulses increasing
exponentially and the sub compressing under impossible pressure. A decision
needs to be made .. abort or die

    Act 4:

    Climax/Ultimate expression of
    the conflict: Amid warping
reality of immense pressure, Garrett confers with Rob and realises the
Antagonist is within – ‘I have met the enemy, and he is us’. Sees that this
is his ultimate test of external / internal belief and capability .. he exits
submarine into impossible pressure / flame / energy, Rob appears alongside
him. He farewells his friend and passes safely through barrier into
    ethereal space.

Garrett meets with The Elders, RB is with them (one of them?) .. and learns the history of Earth / space and of humanity’s / his future

    Resolution: Returns
to the sub and specialists, ascent to the world now calm after massive
upheaval, wife and child and .. the future!

    Geoff Gwillim’s Subtext Plot

VISION: I am a writer of popular and critically acclaimed films, enjoying and grateful for every aspect of my creative life, consistently writing what and as I choose wherever I choose to live in the world, loving the wonderful experiences my writing enables me to have.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT IS:

Exploring and developing the subtext plot for the concept provides a gateway to developing the story’s deeper purpose

Concept A former submariner turned fireman suffering PTSD is recruited for an exploratory mission tive journey when the earth’s crust is torn apart, only to discover the answer to some of life’s biggest questions

    ‘Choice of Subtext Plots

    Layering

    Someone Hides Who They Are

How it Plays Out Inside the Story

There is a deeper meaning throughout the characters’ personal and the collective expedition’s mission/s .. think Dan Brown meets Elon Musk meets Jules Verne.

The journey into the depths is essential and must be undergone on order to rise again.

The reclusive billionaire behind the mission is seeking to access‘the Ancients’ who hold the secret of immortal life and humanity’s eternal ascension to higher consciousness.

Garrett as well as the other crew members must navigate through the labyrinth of their subconscious minds, to defeat their demons and shadow values in order to achieve purification and enlightenment.

Designing the principal’s / protagonist’s development arc, from beginning to end, as a key step in the process provides the beginning of a structure that can then be ‘filled in’ with the events and relationships to enable the protagonist’s transformational journey.

    GARRETT

PTSD and separated from his wife and family, barely holding it together when

That I will keep the processes, strategies, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class confidential, and that I will NOT share any of this program either privately, with a group, posting online, writing articles, through video or computer programming, or in any other way that would make those processes, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class available to anyone who is not a member of this class.

    2. That each writer’s work here is copyrighted and that writer is the sole owner of that work. That includes this program which is copyrighted by Hal Croasmun. I acknowledge that submission of an idea to this group constitutes a claim of and the recognition of ownership of that idea.

I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.

    3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.

    4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.

    5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.

    6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.
