    Jan’s Structure Solutions!

    My vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned by doing this assignment was that doing the high speed writing strategy, it left a lot of possibilities to improve the script. Identifying the problems…er…identifying the areas that needed improvement. I am still implementing those changes, as I only identified them knowing I would go back and solve them scene by scene.

    The script and the pitch and the outline diverged at points. Where the pitch worked or the outline worked, scenes were changed, and vise-versa.
    This was a high-speed draft, so the conflict needed to be addressed in virtually the entire script, no it didn’t…yes it did…you lie…I face facts…
    The structure was pretty solid, good bones.
    The Turning Points and Transformational Journey needed some love.
    I have to really dig down and improve the layers beneath the surface.
    My mid-point needed some support, some encouragement.
    My ending was serviceable but dull. With a polish, it will shine.

    Jan’s Intriguing Moments

    My vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned was this is a weak skill for me, at the moment. I seem to use the emotional moments for intriguing moments a lot. Finding intriguing moments in something I will continue to work at.

    ACT I:
    Intrigue: after Emberleaf drinks the sacred tea, looks into the mirror water, sees a vision of herself getting scolded by Gossimerwind for a magic spell she used
    Intrigue/Mystery: a hazy figure (will be M’Mranth-Jix) in the mirror water
    Hidden Identity: Khyber-Ra as the wanderer
    Intrigue: we do not see M’Mrath-Jix clearly talking to Khyber-Ra
    Scheme: Khyber-Ra and Nightshade plotting for the numinous amulet fragments

    ACT II:
    Intrigue: we do not see who Khyber-Ra is talking to in the forbidden forest
    Scheme: Nightshade feigns loyalty to the alliance
    Intrigue: Emberleaf hesitates by the liquid grounds, why
    Cover-up: Nightshade saves Emberleaf from the winged creature, so she can still get the fragments
    Superior Position: we find out who that the hazy figure and who Khyber-Ra was talking to are the same person
    Intrigue: the encroaching forbidden forests are closing in on Eveandor
    Mystery: the creature knows Emberleaf and we do not know why
    Mystery: memories and hidden pasts triggered in the alliance, Emberleaf’s memory of creating the creature from dark magic, what she was scolded for

    ACT III:
    Scheme/Covert Agenda: M’Mranth-Jix engaging with Emberleaf directly, now that Nightshade is out
    Intrigue: encounters the whispering phantom, Gossimerwind, warned of dark magic in her
    Intrigue: Emberleaf turns away from the liquid ground
    Scheme: the queen’s council confronts Khyber-Ra to get the numinous amulet, but fail
    Hidden Identity: M’Mranth-Jix is Khyber-Ra’s father and master
    Conspiracy: Khyber-Ra’s plot to overthrow M’Mranth-Jix

    ACT IV:
    Mystery: Emberleaf knows dark magic and the creature was the one she created
    Scheme: Khyber-R’s revenge plan to take over Eveandor by stealing the numinous amulet
    Cover-up: Khyber-Ra tries to convince Emberleaf he is reformed and she is almost tricked, but uses the dark magic in her to break the trance
    Mystery/Intrigue: the queen’s council comes to the decision to expel Emberleaf from the council

    EMBERLEAF PJ3: her wings open, she throws magic elements and the wanderer -Khyber-Ra- deftly counters them. She dismisses him, her wings furl, them unfurl when she throws a magic spell and he blocks it, impressing her. She consults Lightthistle, who has reservations, but she creates a magic headdress for him

    Jan’s 4 Act Deeper Layer

    My Vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced.

    What I learned from this assignment was how important it is to empower myself to create, and not remain stuck, as I was. Coming up with these elements was important to the development of the story and had a profound influence on how I see how the story can play out, challenging me further in the fantasy genre

    Surface Layer: Emberleaf races against the halo-moon cycle and Khyber-Ra to restore the shattered numinous amulet to regain her magic and retain her reign over Eveandor
    Deeper Layer: the shattering of the numinous amulet is part of an ancient prophecy that foretells of a dark one rising up and puts Emberleaf on the quest to restore it, preventing the prophecy from coming true and regaining her magic. Her quest reveals her family’s and her own connection to dark magic, her connection with Khyber-Ra and that M’Mranth-Jinx is the dark one rising, and is their father.
    Major Reveal: M’Mranth-Jinx tells Emberleaf and Khyber-Ra he is their father and wants them by his side to rule the realm as a family
    Influences Surface Story: challenges Emberleaf to rescind the banishment spell on her life unity partner, Khyber-Ra; is a dilemma for Emberleaf to keep to light magic or convert to dark magic. The queen’s council become involved to help defeat M’Mranth-Jinx
    Hints: she has guilt over exiling Khyber-Ra(before the movie starts); she is visited by her mother in the mystic lakes; she cannot have offspring without Khyber-Ra; Lightthistle’s warning to her about venturing out into the realm vulnerable and defenseless; when she enters the forbidden forest to collect a fragment of the amulet, she is confronted with creatures created by her family, including herself when she was a young pixie
    Changes Reality: Emberleaf now knows she has both dark and light magic capabilities, but is a more confident ruler; she is removed from the queen’s council for being tainted

    Character: Emberleaf
    Beginning: Emberleaf burdened with making a crucial decision of banishing Khyber-Ra, her life unity partner, for using dark magic, acknowledges the halo-moon cycle ending and its consequences at the secret queen’s council
    Inciting Incident: a disguised Khyber-Ra uses dark magic on her and has the numinous amulet shattered stripping Emberleaf of her magic, and breaks a spell keeping M’Mranth-Jinx prisoner. The halo-moon cycle is reaching its zenith
    Turning Point 1: assembles the pixie alliance to regain her magic, restore the numinous amulet and defeat Khyber-Ra. The queen’s council offers representative from each land: Willowbreeze, Thornwhisper, Nightshade, to be a part of the alliance. Lightthistle warns Emberleaf about going out into the realm magicless and facing Khyber-Ra and an unknown creeping darkness
    Act 2: collects the first fragments, almost killed by a hideous creature, but Nightshade saves her, using dark magic and is kicked out of the alliance, as the halo-moon reaches its nadir; M’Mranth-Jinx emerges and builds his army of creatures and beasts; Emberleaf is visited by her mother in the whispering, mystic lakes
    Turning Point 2 / Midpoint: Emberleaf is separated from Willowbreeze and Thornwhisper and is captured by inhabitants of the forbidden forest, actually shielding her from the prying magic of M’Mranth-Jinx and collects the last fragment of the numinous amulet. M’Mranth-Jinx reveals to Khyber-Ra and Emberleaf he is their father
    Act 3: Emberleaf is given over to the tribe of bartering beasts, Khyber-Ra stands at M’Mranth-Jinx’s side
    Turning Point 3: makes the decision to save Willowbreeze, Thornwhisper, and Nightshade over herself just as the moon-cycle ends. Khyber-Ra rises up and captures Eveandor
    Act 4 Climax: Willowbreeze, Thornwhisper, Lightthistle and Nightshade free Emberleaf. Emberleaf and her alliance along with the queen’s council, battle and defeat Khyber-Ra, as the halo-moon cycle ends, Emberleaf exiles Khyber-Ra to the forbidden wastelands
    Resolution: The group cast M’Mranth-Jinx back into his prison, Emberleaf shows leniency on Nightshade for practicing dark magic, he and Willowbreeze and Thornwhisper are part of her royal court. Emberleaf becomes a more confident leader, but is removed from the queen’s council for having both equal light and dark magic capabilities.

    Character: Khyber-Ra
    Beginning: Khyber-Ra exiled by Emberleaf, his life unity partner, for practicing dark magic
    Inciting Incident: Khyber-Ra is disguised as a magic trainer, reveals he is Khyber-Ra and enacts vengeance on Emberleaf, shattering the numinous amulet, stripping Emberleaf of her magic, leaving her defenseless and vulnerable
    Turning Point 1: seizes control of Eveandor, enlists Nightshade, whom he secretly trained in dark magic, to bring him the numinous amulet fragments
    Act 2: Khyber-Ra is beaten down by the inhabitants of the forbidden forest, makes a deal with the tribe of bartering beasts to get him Emberleaf
    Turning Point 2 / Midpoint: captures Willowbreeze and Thornwhisper when they attempt to rescue Emberleaf, assembles the numinous amulet
    Act 3: The halo-moon cycle ends, Khyber-Ra assumes control of Eveandor from M’Mranth-Jinx
    Turning Point 3: has the numinous amulet stolen from him by Nightshade, loses his kingdom
    Act 4 Climax: Khyber-Ra battles Emberleaf and is defeated as the halo-moon cycle ends
    Resolution: his life is spared, but he is banished to the forbidden lands, not to far from his father’s prison

  • Jan’s Likability/Relatability/Empathy

    My vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned by doing this assignment is how these elements enriched the characters and helped define the relationship between them from the opening up to the inciting incident

    Present your Protagonist: Emberleaf

    Opening: Emberleaf is spending time feeding and playing with an outcast and feral creature, interacting with it with and without her magic

    Likability:
    Emberleaf connects with an outcast creature, despite how it looks and acts(we do not yet know she created it using forbidden dark magic as a young and rebellious pixie);

    Relatability:
    She shows qualities of mothering and caring for something otherwise repulsive to look at;

    Empathy:
    Emberleaf clearly has a love for this creature;

    Likability:

    Empathy:
    Khyber-Ra wields dark magic and beats down Emberleaf and her love for him is shattered;

    Emberleaf is in a dilemma of exiling Khyber-Ra to the forbidden forests, but he shatters the numinous amulet, the source of her magic, after the punishment is handed down

    Likability:
    She goes through the phases of knowing she must exile Khyber-Ra;

    Relatability:
    She was deceived by the one she loves;

    Empathy:
    Emberleaf is caught in the dilemma of having to exile the one she loves;

    After consulting with Lightthistle on how to regain her magic, assembles a pixie alliance to protect her on her quest to retrieve and reassemble the numinous amulet

    Likability:
    Vulnerable and weak, Emberleaf shows courage in the face of great peril;

    Relatability:
    Emberleaf has Lightthistle as her advisor to advise her on what she must do to regain her magic;

    Empathy:
    Emberleaf acknowledges she needs help even though she is the queen of Eveandor;

    Present your Antagonist: Khyber-Ra

    Opening: shows allegiance to Emberleaf by giving her the royal respect she deserves

    Likability:
    Opens the door to the magic training room for her;

    Relatability:
    Being chivalrous, knows she likes him;

    Empathy:
    Showing respect for his queen;

    Emberleaf is training Khyber-Ra and he wields forbidden dark magic

    Likability:
    Khyber-Ra takes the lesson seriously, listening to Emberleaf

    Relatability:
    He shows up Emberleaf by using dark magic on her, teaching the teacher;

    Likability:
    Khyber-Ra knows he did something forbidden and must accept the punishment;

    Relatability:
    He tries to plead his way out of the punishment, arguing was teaching Emberleaf there is stronger magic out in the realm

    Khyber-Ra lashes out by shattering the numinous amulet, stripping Emberleaf of her magic;

    Jan’s Characters Intrigue

    My vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned is that vacillating between the character profiles and this assignment, I was able to delve deeper into each character and find things I never thought of. Brainstorming these with “Cindi” helped confirm these decisions were apropos of the story I am trying to tell.

    Character Name: Emberleaf

    Role: Queen of Eveandor

    Hidden agendas: seeks revenge on Khyber-Ra for outing her as one who is using dark magic to her parents when they were kids

    Competition: set against rivals for the throne at the time of the setting of the halo-moon

    Conspiracies: joins the queen of Rydendalle to join forces and create a Dark Magic creature to push back against the rising of M’Mbyr-Jix, the supreme wielder of the Dark Magic(only when she loses her magic, the control of the creature becomes tenuous and starts destroying Eveandor and Rydendalle.

    Secrets: Practiced Dark Magic and created a hideous beast she cast out to the forbidden forests(NOTE: she encounters this beast on her quest for the numinous amulet fragments)
    Deception: ruled one of the Eveandorians was innocent, though guilty, in favor of giving their first newborn girl to her as her heir to the throne

    Unspoken Wound: shamed and teased for not being able to cross the liquid ground in pixie school.

    Secret Identity: high pixie-priestess of the “light alliance,” a covert group of queens who drink of the sacrith tea to prognosticate possible futures.

    3. Give us an idea of how that character’s subtext might show up in your movie.
    Secrets would show up in the forbidden forest when finding the fragment of the numinous amulet and have to fight that which she created and having to admit it to the alliance; Unspoken Wound would be when the alliance has to cross a liquid expanse and without her magic must rely on her resourcefulness to do so; the Conspiracy could be that the creature runs amok in the land of Rydendalle

    Character Name: Khyber-Ra

    Role: Dark Magic Master

    Hidden agendas: to turn the numinous amulet over to the dark side to overthrow M’Mbyr-Sugh and become the supreme wielder of Dark Magic

    Competition: outdoes a rival Dark Magic wielder for the numinous amulet only to have to relinquish the throne to collect the fragments, leaving it to the rival for potential rule if the amulet is not reassembled before the halo-moon sets

    Conspiracies: colludes with Nightshade to prevent the pixie alliance from restoring the numinous amulet,

    Secrets: disfigured a classmate interested in Emberleaf and banished him to the forbidden lands

    Deception: has Nightshade believing he will be apart of his kingdom once Emberleaf is destroyed and left permanently magicless

    Unspoken Wound: brewed a concoction that paralyzed a pixie and made him disappear rather than be outcast for the act against pixie-hood

    Secret Identity: keeper of the jewel mine where all crystals are excavated

    3. Give us an idea of how that character’s subtext might show up in your movie.
    Competition would show up when Khyber-Ra battles the rival and when he grabs the amulet, it shatters into fragments and are scattered across the realm, the rival stays behind when Khyber-Ra goes out to reassemble the numinous amulet; Secret could come to bear when Emberleaf is captured and finds her parents trapped by Khyber-Ra; Unspoken Wound would come to light when they are on their quest and come upon the paralyzed pixie and helps the alliance collect the fragment of the amulet.

    Jan’s Subtext Characters

    My vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned was how to create subtext identities and traits to serve the unique characters in my movie. Using “Cindi” as a brainstorming tool, it confirmed much of what I wanted to do, and helped identify ways to express what I could not get out onto the page

    Movie Title: The Dark Crystal
    Character Name: Jen
    Subtext Identity: Reluctant hero
    Subtext Trait: courage
    Subtext Logline: He is a reluctant hero who does not believe he has the courage to get the shard and heal the dark crystal
    Possible Areas of Subtext: he jumps on a heavens alignment mobile to escape the Garthin; when he throws the shard, not wanting the responsibility; jumps onto the dark crystal hovering over a lava pool

    My Movie Title: Eveandor’s Numinous Amulet

    Character Name: Emberleaf
    Subtext Identity: confidence
    Subtext Trait: concealing shame
    Subtext Logline: she was shamed as a child and carries the weight of past decisions so she hides under the blanket of false confidence
    Possible Areas of Subtext: her sparring with M’ranth-jix to perfect her use of light magic; gets the queen of Rydedalle to let Willowbreeze to join their alliance; when she kicks Nightshade out of the alliance for going against them, making the group imperfect

    Character Name: M’ranth-Jix
    Subtext Identity: Manipulator
    Subtext Trait: Makes false promises
    Subtext Logline: He uses manipulation and makes false promises to wield his thirst for absolute power and control
    Possible Areas of Subtext: he and Emberleaf sparring and he uses dark magic to overpower her; he tries to take the numinous amulet from Emberleaf and it shatters; uses Nightshade to steal pieces of the amulet the alliance finds; convinces the inhabitants of the forbidden forest to let his past discretions go in trade for giving them Emberleaf

    May 8, 2024 at 12:31 pm in reply to: WIM+AI – Module 3 – Lesson 2: Roles that Sell Actors

    Jan’s Actor Attractors

    My Vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced.

    This was a challenging assignment for me. Perfectionism was on display for this assignment. I had a hard time expressing the elements that could represent the characters, coming up with how to answer the questions right, I eventually discovered things that I think could enrich the story, expanding the scope and creating more conflict for the two main characters.

    Character: Emberleaf
    1. Why would an actor WANT to be known for this role? Pixie queen journeys across dangerous lands and fend off hideous beasts to regain her magic and reclaim the numinous amulet

    2. What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in the movie? As a pixie queen without her magic embarks on a perilous journey knowing her vulnerabilities could lead to her death

    3. What are the most interesting actions the Lead takes in the movie? Exiles her friend and advisor; battles hideous beasts; survives the mind-twisting haunted forest; kicks a pixie out of their alliance; frees the members of the alliance; battles her former friend and advisor to get her queendom back

    4. How is this character introduced that could sell it to an actor? She is sparring with her friend and advisor, when he uses forbidden dark magic and she entraps him and rules that he should be exiled to the forbidden realm

    5. What is this character’s emotional range? Anxious she will make wrong decisions to confidence in guiding the pixie alliance. Finding the strength to carry on when she is at her most vulnerable and despondent

    6. What subtext can the actor play? Underlying sense of insecurity; fights for feeling confident; perfectionism keeps her from acting sooner than she should

    7. What’s the most interesting relationships this character has? Strained relationship with M’ranth-Jix. M’ranth-Jix is her friend and advisor in her royal court, who she exiles from Eveandor, having to confront him again to reclaim her queendom and throne; her mentor and oracle, Lightthistle guides her through her perilous journey to restore the numinous amulet

    8. How is this character’s unique voice presented? Through her abilities and inabilities to make decisions. Her perfectionism and indecision gets in her way of confidence, paralyzing her

    9. What makes this character special and unique? She is the last of her bloodline to be heir to the throne of Eveandor, she needs to remain in power past the halo-moon cycle so she can train a successor since she cannot bear children

    10. (Fill in a scene that shows the character fulfilling much of the Actor Attractor model.)
    Emberleaf spars with M’ranth-Jix, exercising her magic abilities when he pulls out some dark magic and beats down Emberleaf. She entraps him in some ancient magic spell unbreakable by dark magic. She takes council with Lightthistle, her mentor and oracle, to come up with a suitable punishment and she must exile her friend and advisor to the realm of the dark forest. She does not want to do this but knows she must to keep her power as queen, with the waning halo-moon ending the growing cycle and signifying the realignment of the queen’s magic

    Character: M’ranth-Jix
    1. Why would an actor WANT to be known for this role? Pixie who wants to take away the queen’s magic for absolute power over Eveandor, and to take over the realm one land at a time

    2. What makes this character one of the most interesting characters in the movie? He is a schemer who wants to be in power. Manipulates the weaknesses of those around him to achieve his goal of ruling Eveandor and conquering the lands in the realm

    3. What are the most interesting actions the Lead takes in the movie? 4. How is this character introduced that could sell it to an actor? Sparring with Emberleaf and uses forbidden dark magic on her to beat her down, exhibiting his power over her, is exiled because of that.

    5. What is this character’s emotional range? Vindictiveness over being exiled to ruthless desire to be the king of Eveandor; manipulative and untrustworthy by making promises he has no intention of keeping

    6. What subtext can the actor play? There is an underlying feeling of vindictiveness in his actions and what he says, he is embittered by the fact that he is not in power, truly believes that dark magic would make Eveandor stronger against the other forces, over the unity of the lighter lands

    7. What’s the most interesting relationships this character has? With the pixie Nightshade as his acolyte who he uses to sabotage the pixie alliance’s quest to restore the numinous amulet with the promise of being part of his rule of Eveandor; his antagonistic relationship with Emberleaf, wanting to take away her magic and leave her vulnerable in the dark lands of the realm

    8. How is this character’s unique voice presented? He undercuts everything with forms of dark magic. He uses the weakness of light magic against those who are easily manipulated or in a vulnerable position

    9. What makes this character special and unique? He is a chameleon-like pixie who uses his manipulative characteristics to get people to do his bidding; as one who practices dark magic, has channeled the dark side of the realm’s most feared and exiled pixies

    10. (Fill in a scene that shows the character fulfilling much of the Actor Attractor model.)
    M’ranth-Jix has Nightshade in his dark magic bubble, promising him a place in his kingdom if he sabotages the alliance’s quest for the amulet by bringing him a piece so he can complete it, making it powerful over the dark magic for the next halo-moon cycle

  • Jan’s Genre Conventions

    My Vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced.

    What I learned from this assignment was that using the genre conventions added depth to the world and the characters. It made me think of where their backstories would fit in for motivation and how their interrelationships could work.

    Title: Eveandor’s Numinous Amulet
    Concept: If the halo-moon cycle ends before her pixie alliance restores Eveandor’s shattered numinous amulet, Emberleaf will be magicless, lose her queendom, and be forever vulnerable and defenseless.
    Main Conflict: M’ranth-Jix must prevent Emberleaf, and her pixie alliance, from restoring the shattered numinous amulet, regaining her magic, and reclaiming her queendom of Eveandor.

    Conventions of Fantasy
    PURPOSE: To explore different worlds and scenarios, pursue alternate decisions and actions to offer escape and adventure.

    WORLD BUILDING: May consist of parallel worlds with magical portals, universes, future, or imaginary worlds consistent with the story and characters who inhabit it. Are typically distinguished from Science Fiction and Horror with the absence of science and macabre themes.

    SOCIAL COMMENTARY: in a fantastical world of dragons, wizards, and other non-worldly environments, can be a mirror to current events and social issues. These commentaries can also be timeless.

    QUEST OR JOURNEY: A stepped series of adventures initiated by the hero and companions starting with the simplest encounters escalating through increasingly more perilous confrontations.

    EMOTIONALLY RESONATES: We always need to care about the characters in a Fantasy, and their internal journey drives the film’s events and progression. Needs to connect with intense emotional experiences of hero.

    HERO: Imperfect with the willingness to undertake a challenging mission against crushing adversity with courage.

    VILLAIN: cunning and devious, challenges and is a threat to the hero, moves the story forward.

    SUB-GENRE: (not an exhaustive list) High/Epic, Fables, Magical Realism, Fairy Tales, Portal, Grimdark, Comic….

    Act 1: Old Ways

    Opening:
    Rolling, vibrant hills, luscious landscapes, beautifully twisted flora, enchanting fauna, and fluid shaped buildings make up the quaint ward that is Eveandor.
    The Halo-moon is waning in the sky, signaling the end of another growing cycle and, also nullifies the magic of the numinous amulet from the full setting of the halo-moon until the pantox-sun waxes, which is 1 star cycle. This signals the beginning of another growing cycle and the return of the magic to the numinous amulet.
    Queen Emberleaf the hesitant and naïve queen of Eveandor, burdened by leadership is faced with ruling on whether to exile M’ranth-Jix from Eveandor for practicing dark arts magic.
    Inciting Incident:
    Lightthistle mentors Emberleaf that she make the difficult decision to exile her former friend, M’ranth-Jix, to the land of the forgotten forest.
    M’ranth-Jix, megalomaniacal, attempts to steal the numinous amulet. He and Emberleaf wage a magical battle, losing the numinous amulet to M’ranth-Jix, and her magic are drained in the process.
    Turning Point:
    Lightthistle uses powerful magic and shatters the numinous amulet, scattering the pieces into different wards of the land, weakening Emberleaf even more, to the verge of mortality. She then uses her magic to exile M’ranth-Jix.
    Act 2: Transitioning to New Ways
    4. New Plan:

    Lightthistle tells Emberleaf she must collect all the pieces before the Pantox-sun waxes, or lose her powers and perish as a result.
    Emberleaf reluctantly forms the pixie alliance, made up of Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, and Nightshade, to protect her as they embark on their quest to retrieve the shattered amulet pieces.
    Unknown to the others, Nightshade is a mentee of M’ranth-Jix, and uses this opportunity to rescue his mentor by working to gather the pieces of the numinous amulet, until it is whole and bringing to M’ranth-Jix.
    The halo-moon nears the horizon.
    The group faces perilous trials that challenge their own personal wounds and experiences, through dangerous haunted and sacred forests, and confront beasts and allies in phantastic and mesmerizing wards to find the numinous amulet pieces.
    The alliance forges bonds and Emberleaf starts to embrace empathy and teamwork, shifting away from her being burdened by leadership.
    Plan in Action:
    As they progress, Emberleaf’s magic slowly returns and she becomes more decisive with each recovered fragment, bolstering her confidence.
    Tensions rise within the group, particularly with Nightshade’s suspicious behavior.
    Nightshade finds a piece of the numinous amulet and takes, doesn’t tell the others
    Midpoint Turning Point:
    Lightthistle warns Emberleaf that Nightshade cannot be trusted any longer and she ignores her, as Nightshade was her strongest protector.
    Willowbreeze exposes Nightshade’s betrayal, him colluding with M’ranth-Jix when he gives him a piece of the numinous amulet.
    The halo-moon is at the horizon, the darkening of the star cycle.
    Emberleaf’s hesitancy returns and only when Lightthistle appears does she kick out Nightshade from the alliance with conviction, highlighting her gradual transformation to a more confident leader.
    When the alliance attempts a recon mission to get the piece back, Nightshade captures Emberleaf.
    Act 3: New Ways
    7. Rethink Everything:

    The alliance is fractured and defeated when M’ranth-Jix takes the nearly restored numinous amulet from Emberleaf, her magic vanishes and she is weaker and more vulnerable against everything.
    Thornwhisper and Willowbreeze barely escape.
    They find the last piece of the numinous amulet in a vengeful forest inhabited by multi-eyed horrific creatures. They cannot touch it, its power will permanently drain their magic. They guard it with their life while they contemplate their next move.
    Nightshade learns from Emberleaf that M’ranth-Jix will not keep his promise to him, and is caught trying to steal the numinous amulet, but he escapes.
    Nightshade finds Thornwhisper and Willowbreeze. They battle Nightshade to prevent him from collecting the piece. Thornwhisper is killed, and Willowbreeze is on the edge of death. Nightshade battles a multi-eyed creatures through the vengeful forest, and takes the numinous amulet piece, barely making it out alive.
    M’ranth-Jix shows up, and reveals he let Nightshade go because he could not collect the last piece of the numinous amulet from the ward because of a curse laid upon him by the vengeful forest. M’ranth-Jix prevents Nightshade from throwing the piece back into the vengeful forest ward and takes it from them, now the numinous amulet is restored.
    The halo-moon sets and the star cycle begins its swift race across the sky.
    Nightshade revives Thornwhisper, and the three reluctantly reunite to steal the numinous amulet back from M’ranth-Jix while the star cycle drains the numinous amulet of most of its magic.

    Turning Point/Major Shift:
    Emberleaf is breathing in death, her demise is nigh.
    M’ranth-Jix is now the tyrannical king wielding depraved, merciless power, and brings ominous darkness to Eveandor, and exiles Lightthistle.
    Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, and Nightshade launch a selfless and suicidally daring mission to save Emberleaf and retrieve the numinous amulet, but are caught and imprisoned along with Emberleaf.

    New Plan:
    Lightthistle councils Emberleaf how to free herself.
    Emberleaf barely frees Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, and Nightshade, using up the last of her fading magic.
    The star-cycle is at its nadir, the pantox-sun’s dawn approaches.
    Emberleaf perishes.

    Act 4: Ultimate Expression of New Ways
    10. Climax:

    Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, Nightshade and Lightthistle confront M’ranth-Jix and Lightthistle gives her life to get the numinous amulet to Emberleaf, but she is not revived.
    The star cycle is waning, the pantox-sun rises, brightening the ruined landscape.
    Nightshade wields dark magic and brings Emberleaf back from the dead, enough so the numinous amulet will revive her and her magic.
    The pantox-sun has risen, ending the star cycle, returning the magic back to the numinous amulet
    Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, Nightshade, and Emberleaf, now with the amulet, alive and with her magic returned, defeat M’ranth-Jix in a climactic battle.

    Resolution:

    Emberleaf exiles M’ranth-Jix to the vengeful forest. Emberleaf grants Nightshade leniency, showing her transformation to a more empathetic and confident queen. Eveandor, with Nightshade’s help, returns Eveandor to its fantastical land of enchantment.
    The pantox-sun gives new life to Eveandor, encouraging the pixies to repair the damage M’ranth-Jix inflicted upon their ward.
    Thornwhisper finds redemption, Willowbreeze learns to trust again, and are now part of Emberleaf’s royal court.
    The restored numinous amulet symbolizes Emberleaf’s newly found resilience and strength, shining brightly as a testament to her transformation.

    Jan’s Subtext Plot

    My Vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced

    What I learned from doing this assignment is that coming up with different types of subtext plots adds levels of drama and intrigue into the script. Cathi, my AI brainstorming buddy, really helped find deeper layers, expanding on what I had, and coming up with ones I had not thought of. I can see how the seven subtext plots could play out in my story, but Layering, The Fish Out of Water, Superior Position, and A Major Cover Up I think will be most prominent.

    Concept: if the halo-moon cycle ends before her pixie alliance restores Eveandor’s shattered numinous amulet, Emberleaf will be magicless, lose her queendom, and be forever vulnerable and defenseless

    Scheme and Investigation: One in the pixie alliance is plotting against the group, sabotaging their attempts at reclaiming, and restoring, the numinous amulet. Willowbreeze suspects something and launches a covert investigation. When she finds out who it is, a past betrayal arises.

    Layering: The quest for recovering the pieces and restoring the numinous amulet is layered in deceit and betrayal and sabotage. Nightshade is secretly in collusion with M’ranth-Jix as revenge for having his magic suppressed for betrayal. He is also plotting against M’ranth-Jix for absolute reign of Eveandor. Nightshade frames Willowbreeze when she discovers he is practicing dark arts magic and Emberleaf casts her from the group. Emberleaf must navigate between illusions and truths on her way to gaining courage and regaining her queendom. M’ranth-Jix is using dark magic to accelerate the halo-moon cycle, and is challenged by an unsuspecting adversary

    Someone Hides Who They Are: There is a saboteur among the alliance, jeopardizing the success of the quest for the numinous amulet. Willowbreeze suspects one of them is betraying the group. Nightshade is in collusion with M’ranth-Jix, however, he is also plotting against him for reign of Eveandor

    The Fish Out of Water: Emberleaf is thrust from the safe confines of her palace into an unforgiving land of unknown evils, without her powers, and defenseless. She is outside her comfort zone, relying on others to protect her, confronting her insecurities as leader, to finding new courage in herself

    Superior Position: M’ranth-Jix manipulates events that affect the alliance, forcing the alliance to encounter increasingly dangerous situations in their quest; Nightshade is colluding with M’ranth-Jix and must be cautious to not give himself away, but still keep up the appearances as an ally; Nightshade is also acting against M’ranth-Jix for reign of Eveandor. Willowbreeze finds out about Nightshade and he frames her, getting her cast out of the group

    A Major Cover Up: Beneath the façade of the alliance, lies deceit and betrayal. Nightshade pretends to be an ally of the alliance, but is out for redemption against Emberleaf for her suppression of his magic, exposing him to ridicule and scorn. Nightshade frames Willowbreeze as the betrayer of the group, and Emberleaf casts her out, before she discovers Nightshade is the one betraying the alliance, and is colluding with M’ranth-Jix for reign of Eveandor. What M’ranth-Jix does not know is that Nightshade is plotting against him for Eveandor to be his kingdom

    Competitive Agendas: The alliance faces internal strife, and the bonds of the group are fractured. Emberleaf must find courage within her to keep reign of Eveandor. Nightshade wants redemption for her subjecting him to scorn and ridicule. Willowbreeze struggles with betraying the one who betrayed her and Thornwhisper must overcome his insecurities and believe he is proficient at magic. M’ranth-Jix wants Eveandor to be his kingdom, and must suppress Nightshade’s ambitions and keep the numinous amulet from be restored.

    What I learned from doing this assignment was that it was fun exploring where Emberleaf started out and ended. It gave me a clearer vision of the journey she is going to take and how the characters around her will be part of that journey.

    Protagonist: Emberleaf

    • Arc Beginning: entitled and aloof queen of Eveandor
    • Arc Ending: becomes more courageous and empathetic

    • Internal Journey: from rigid and entitled to empathetic and lenient
    • External Journey: from reclusive and afraid in her palace to courageous and confident queen of Eveandor

    • Old Ways:
    o Rarely seen

    Jan’s Intentional Lead Characters

    My Vision: I am a talented and strong writer with a unique voice, recognized by the movie industry with multiple screenplays produced.

    What I learned is that creating powerful loglines for the characters develops the relationships and drives the direction of the story, and in my case, AI had generated virtually exactly the vision I have for my story.

    “What makes this character fit my concept and title powerfully?”

    Protagonist: Emberleaf, Eveandor’s reigning queen, loses her magic when the numinous amulet is shattered

    Antagonist: M’ranth-Jix exiled pixie for practicing dark magic, wants revenge on Emberleaf by preventing the numinous amulet from being restored

    Connecting Character: Nightshade secretly wants to rule Eveandor and turns against Emberleaf and dupes M’ranth-Jix

    3. Tell us what makes each of these characters unique. These two steps will look like this:

    Character: Emberleaf
    Logline: she is the reigning queen of Eveandor, but the shattered numinous amulet strips her powers
    Unique: her magic and lifeforce is intertwined with the numinous amulet and her survival is dependent on restoring it, making the amulet whole again.

    Character: M’ranth-Jix
    Logline: exiled pixie for practicing dark magic is out for revenge by seizing reign over Eveandor, exiling Emberleaf in the process
    Unique: uses his dark magic to drain Emberleaf of her magic and lifeforce, leaving her vulnerable in the outer realms of Eveandor

    Character: Nightshade
    Logline: ally turned adversary against the pixie alliance, and turns against M’ranth-Jix, who thinks he is working to keep the pixie alliance from succeeding on their quest
    Unique: former ally and friend to Thornwhisper, Willowbreeze, and Emberleaf, and conspiring with M’ranth-Jix to reign over Eveandor

    She has a heart transplant, but the heart is damaged and is put on life support, but can only remain on for 3 days

    Officer Abagail, an LGBT ally and Grace’s daughter, illegally gets the list of recipients

    Each recipient ahead of her mother refuses to let her go ahead of them

    Abagail knows she must kill those ahead of her mother

    Abagail’s detective friend, Karen, takes the case

    Heartbeat

    Surface: a daughter has to save her dying mother

    Major Twist: by killing the 5 heart recipients ahead of her on the transplant list

    Deeper Meaning: she uses this opportunity to prove to her mother she really loves her

    Grace, Abagail’s mother, collapses leading a rally, straining her failing heart

    A failed transplant leaves her on life support

    Abagail’s partner cynically says she’ll live if those ahead of her mother get transplants within the next 3 days

    Abagail twists idea that and kills the five recipients ahead of her mother

    Karen, Abagail’s friend and secret love interest, is the detective investigating the murders, while also investigating a series of murders based around the original 13 zodiac signs

    Abagail finds out one of the recipients didn’t die, which disrupts her plan to kill a donor.

    She goes to kill the one who survived, but is cornered and cannot complete her plan.

    Abagail commits suicide to save her mother’s life

    What I learned is that by searching through the story I uncovered subtext and themes that I didn’t initially see.
