This has been a wonderful class. Every lesson gave me insights I had not had before, probably because I am really new at this. I am thrilled to have the lessons to refer to for all other projects I decide to tackle. Can’t say enough great things about the program. PS and I’m really proud of myself for what I have accomplished – not that I am saying it’s high quality, but I finished everything.

    Thank you.

    luv ya 🤗

I’m ready to exchange, and I’m looking forward to, and I’m ready for, feedback.

I’m also looking forward to reading someone else’s endeavors with a caring eye.

    Jeanne Sanner Solving Scene Problems

Okay. The only screenplay I have ever written was 24 pages. While putting that together in the class I took, we were told to make our scenes short and snappy, and we could always go back and add if needed. Currently for this class, my script is 103 pages and I have 102 scenes. Some are really short, and others are a little longer than one page. There is no way I can do this lesson in a short period of time if I am to do it well, but I am looking forward to investing the time needed to complete this lesson. I love the things we are to look for. I hope many of my scenes will be well done from the start, but I have my doubts. I have already learned a lot just by reading the lesson and I know I will learn a tremendous amount about scene construction as I do the lesson. Thank you for such a well-structured program; I just wish we could get feedback on our progress.

Jeanne Sanner – Dead Poets Society Analysis

What I got from this lesson is: I am getting a much better feel for gradients. How to build from one point to its end in clear, specific, incremental steps.

We are looking at this movie from the perspective of the change that occurs for the lead character and the audience.

What is the change this movie is about? What is the Transformational
    Journey of this movie?

    Carpe Diem with wisdom.

    Lead characters:

Who is the Change Agent (the one causing the change)
and what makes this the right character to cause the change?

Mr. Keating. He went to that school, so he knows how it stifles critical, independent thinking. He was a rebel and survived. He understands the boys.

Who is the Transformable Character (the one who makes
the change) and what makes them the right character to deliver this
    profound journey?

    The students. All but one.

    What is the Oppression?

    Rigidity, conformity, father’s demands

How are we lured into the profound journey? What causes us to
    connect with this story?

Keating’s truth. His energy. His authenticity.

Looking at the character(s) who are changed the most, what is the
profound journey? From “old ways” to “new way of
being.” Identify their old way: Identify their new way at the
    conclusion:

The boys in the Dead Poets Society changed the most. Old way, conformity; new way independent thinking.

What is the gradient the change? What steps did the Transformational
Character go through as they were changing?

Laughter at; confusion; fear; testing the idea; playing with the idea; catching on to the idea, then demonstrating that the idea is understood, and that they have the courage to live it.

How is the “old way” challenged? What beliefs are
challenged that cause a main character to shift their perspective…and make
    the change?

The old way is challenged by bending the rules. Coming to experience the difference between blind compliance and appropriate expression of individuality.

What are the most profound moments of the movie?

Tearing out the pages of the book. Standing on the desk. Walking in an individual way. When Neil chooses death. When the boys stand on their desks.

What are the most profound lines of the movie?

Carpe Diem. Quotes from Thoreau. What do you want? By both Keating and the father.

How does the ending payoff the setups of this movie?

The ending shows the contrast between fear and courage, between complying and doing what you think is right. Standing along if necessary.

What is the Profound Truth of this movie?

Be wise. Independent thinking is important. That may lead to conformity at times; it may lead to taking the road less traveled. All choices have consequences. Not all consequences to our choices are “fair,” nor are they necessarily happy, but remaining true to ourselves is worth any outcome.

    Jeanne Sanner – Lead Characters

What I learned from this lesson: Though I did it without consciously knowing what I was doing, I learned that I have all four character types clearly defined in my script. Happy Days!

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

Even if you are not completely sure about which characters are which, give us your current GUESS about these four roles.

Tell us your transformational journey logline.

Andrea, an emotionally and sexually abused daughter, /struggles to overcome her hatred of her father, /until she realizes that only forgiveness will free her to have the life she desires.

Tell us who you think might be your Change Agent and give a few
sentences about how that character fits the role. Also, include: – Their
vision: – Their past experience that fits that vision:

Andrea’s Change Agent is her own guilt. She has an innate awareness that forgiveness is the only path to personal freedom, but intellectually she cannot justify forgiving her father. Her friends also support the idea of forgiveness.

Tell us who you think might be your Transformable Character(s) and
give a few sentences about how that character or characters fit the role.

    a. Andrea fits the role because of her struggle with guilt, blame, and hatred, and she needs a way to find peace and happiness which forgiveness can provide.

    b. Laura needs to forgive her mother. Laura resents that her mother cremated Laura’s father without asking Laura and now she resents having to go to her mother’s house to visit her father.

    c. Darin needed to forgive his husband, Brad, for having an affair and then struggles with Brad’s drinking. He is perfect because he loves the person he needs to forgive and struggles after forgiving him for the affair, having trust issues.

    d. Justin is judgmental of Laura’s behavior, finds someone else treating him the same way, and needs Andrea’s forgiveness. He is perfect since he had to learn the value of forgiveness by having “sinned” himself.

Tell us who or what you think might be The Oppression and give a few
sentences about how The Oppression works in your story.

The Oppression is guilt. Andrea feels guilty for the abuse, for not being able to forgive, for not wanting to forgive, and for imposing her hatred on her friends, deceiving Justin. Laura feels guilt for rejecting her mother, Darin feels guilt for thinking of leaving Brad when their vowels say to death do they part, Justin feels guilty for having shut Andrea out without working on the problem.

Tell us who you think might be your Betraying Character and give a
few sentences about how that character fits the role.

The betraying character is Matt. He cannot forgive the police officers who killed his brother wrongly, and he kills them and dies because of his lack of forgiveness.

Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment
is…?” (place at top of your work).

    Jeanne Sanner Solved Structural Problems

What I learned in this lesson: I was afraid to tackle this one. I have many characters and I wondered if that interfered with the prime structure for the protagonist. After looking at Lesson 5, and going through my script, I realized how closely I followed my outline.

    Act 1:

Opening/Old Ways: Is this an engaging opening scene that lures us into the story? Is the lead character clearly living in a pre-transformation mode? Do the “Old Ways” show up in their behavior and dialogue?

The first scene introduces the main characters, and the lead character demonstrates within this scene that she hates her father and does not want him in her life at all. She also reveals why she hates as she is provoked by one of the other characters.

Inciting Incident: How does this incident invite and propel us into the journey?

People will want to know if the main character can heal her wounds and how she will go about doing it.

Turning Point: How is this Turning Point a twist that locks us into the journey with “no going back?”

Turning point is the end of act one in which Andrea’s boy friend leaves her because of her issues.

    Act 2:

New Plan: What new plan did the protagonist create to deal with the Act 1 Turning Point?

Andrea plans to deceive Justin in to believing that she has solved her problem by showing him an email she says she will send her father making amends.

Plan in action: How does the protagonist take action on that plan? She deletes the email once she has convinced Justin that she will send it, and she goes further by saying that her father has replied and they have scheduled a dinner together.

Midpoint Turning Point: How does the Midpoint change the meaning, creating a reveal that changes everything while keeping us on the same journey?

Andrea ultimately confesses to Justin that she has lied, and he kicks her out of his life forever.

    Act 3:

React/Rethink: What is revealed to the protagonist from the Midpoint? How do they react or rethink things?

Andrea realizes two key things. One, deception is not the way to go, and it is not really who she is. Plus, she realizes that she really does need to find a way to forgive her father if she is to have peace and romantic love in her life. No longer for Justin, but for herself.

New Plan: What new plan did the protagonist create to deal with this new level of conflict?

She seeks the answer to “How do you forgive the unforgiveable?” with a minister, a guru, a mystic, an abuse counselor, and all endeavors fail.

Turning Point: The lowest of the low. How has this Turning Point brought the character to the lowest of lows, making it almost impossible for them to win in a normal way? This forces them to adopt the change in a much bigger way.

Lowest point is Justin has found someone else. She does not have the answer to her quest, she feels betrayed by her closest cousin and her roommate for not sharing how they achieved their success.

    Act 4:

Dilemma: What emotional dilemma requires the protagonist to choose between two alternatives, losing something with either choice?

She must now choose to find a way to forgive her father, which goes against her beliefs, or keep her beliefs and deprive herself of happiness in the future.

Climax/Ultimate @xpression Of The Conflict: How is this the ultimate expression of the conflict? How does it require a “fight to the death,” either literally or symbolically?

She has hated her father for years. She believes her father’s behavior is unforgiveable, but she must forgive him to find peace.

Resolution: How does this resolution represent the “New Ways” and bring this story to a fitting conclusion?

She ultimately decides to give her relationship with her father a chance. They go to dinner again; This time it is peace and enjoyable, but when it comes time to leave the restaurant, they hug, which is very uncomfortable for Andrea. When they leave, her father turns left, Andrea turns right. Her father says to himself “There’s hope” and Andrea says to herself; “It is possible…day by day.

New Ways: What are the New Ways and do they clearly show up in your lead character’s Act 4 behavior and dialogue? Go to dinner in peace. But there is still more work to be done. However, Justin comes back and Andrea says yes to giving the relationship another try.

My script does follow the structure that Lesson 5 very effectively guided us to do! Thank you for such excellent instruction and guidance.

    Jeanne Sanner Solved Character Problems

What did I learn from this lesson: I learned that I had done a better job with my characters than I thought. To be honest, and maybe I’m not objective, I do not see any character problems. My first concern was the Characters not in action, but after checking carefully, the talking heads scenes have action to them.

My major concern with my screenplay is my structure. The protagonist is strong, the conflict is strong, there are gradients to the protagonist’s journey. The characters are very different, though I can give each one a unique characteristic.

My other concern is: do I have enough “entertainment.” (from a previous lesson) I am looking at that carefully, but I feel good about having few character problems.

    Jeanne Sanner Transformed Journey

What I learned from this assignment: I played with the logline and recognized I had started with a general and was able to work down to the bottom line. (I hope)

    1. Tell us your logline for the transformational journey.

Andrea, an emotionally and sexually abused daughter, /struggles to overcome her hatred of her father, /until she realizes that only forgiveness will free her to have the life she desires.

Tell us what you see as the old ways.

Andrea hates her father and does not want anything to do with him. She gets livid whenever her father attempts to contact her, which disturbs everyone around her.

Andrea has no desire to forgive her father. She believes he doesn’t deserve to be forgiven.

She has no clue where to start if she did decide to forgive him.

She has no interest in searching for a way to forgive even though her friends encourage her to do so.

    2. Tell us what you see as the new ways.

First there is a transition period in which she tries to find an answer, but nothing she tries provides an answer. She then tries the way her friends used. At first that does not work.

Then she comes to the realization that she really does need help and sincerely commits herself to the change she must experience.

She ultimately has dinner with her father, which goes well, but the hug at the end is awkward; she still has work to do; it’s too soon for physical contact, but she has come a long way and we know she will ultimately conquer all.

    Jeanne Sanner First Three Decisions

What I learned from this assignment: I learned that I am not clear on my entertainment world. The world is that of friends in San Diego, but I’m not sure that is strong enough.

    1. What is my profound truth: We can learn how to forgive the unforgiveable. (Forgiving isn’t something we can do; it is the result of what we stop doing.)

    2. The audience will experience the freedom true forgiveness provides.

    3. The entertainment vehicle is: an embellished As-It-Happened Conflict.

Jeanne Sanner – Groundhog Day Analysis

What I learned from the analysis is that enjoyed the movie more than I have before because I was looking for specific answers to specific questions. I also came to realize that the death of “Pop” was a profound moment in the story.

    1. What is the CHANGE this movie is about?

o Learning to care about others.

    2. What is the Transformational Journey of this movie?

o What is the Oppression? – Fear of change, love, joy

    4. How are we lured into the profound journey? Mystery

o What causes us to connect with this story? Often times we find ourselves feeling like Phil and we want to be different.

    5. Looking at the character(s) who are changed the most,

    o Phil and Rita

o What is the profound journey? From “old ways” to “new way of being.”

    1. Identify their old way: grumpy, arrogant, self- centered

    2. Identify new way: caring, giving, loving

    6. What is the gradient of change?

Slow, in the beginning, he’s still tries to get what he wants, then he learns what love is. Giving is the key to happiness.

    7. What steps did the Transformational Character go through as they were changing?

o Selfish, testing his limits, acceptance, change

    8. How is the “old way” challenged?

What beliefs are challenged that cause a main character to shift their perspective…and make the change?

That people are morons; that life is boring and ridiculous, to seeing beauty, joy, love.

    9. What are the most profound moments of the movie?

o When the old man dies

o When he wakes up and she is bed with him

    10. What are the most profound lines of the movie?

    Jeanne Sanner – Missing Scenes

First, though I have not kept up with the posting, I have kept up with the assignments. I have completed my first draft, and I am thrilled! (Not necessarily with my quality, but with the fact I finished all of the assignments and have a workable draft.

Second, what I learned from adding missing scenes. At first, I didn’t see any missing scenes (probably because they were there. lol) Then I realized where I could flesh out one character, Matt, and give closure to Andrea and Justin. so I wrote those two scenes, and I added to two other scenes to create the insights I wanted to reveal.

I’ve also realized that I do not have many action scenes, and that the concepts I’m working with are difficult to actually show. I think that’s the area that needs the most work.

Jeanne Sanner Act 4 Scenes 1 and 2

What I learned from this lesson: I am gaining a greater insight to the flow of a 90 minute screenplay.

    Act 4

    Key Scene 1 Outline

    1. Andrea has not come out of her room for five days.

    2. Laura puts food in her room several times a day.

    3. Darin, Laura, Shep, are very concerned.

    4. They decide to have an intervention.

    Key scene 2 Outline

    1. Laura goes into Andrea’s room first and encourages her to put her bathrobe on.

    2. Darin goes in next, and asks Andrea for forgiveness.

    3. Shep goes in next, tries to get her to return to his instruction

    4. Justin (surprise) comes in to say, she will always be special in his life, but it is still better to keep distance for a while.

    5. Brad is in rehab, but sends best wishes.

    6. Matt sends a get well card.

    7. Later, Laura hears the shower running.

    ACT 4

INT. COFFEE SHOP – MID-MORNING 5 DAYS LATER

Laura enters, grabs a table. Darin enters and joins her. They

signal for a waitress. Shep enters and joins them.

    LAURA

    Hi Darin.

    DARIN

    How is she?

Shep enters, joins them, waitress takes orders. Laura soda,

    Darin coffee, Shep water.

    65.

    66.

    LAURA

It’s been five days since she left

her room except to go to the

    bathroom.

    DARIN

    Five days?

    SHEP

    Five days?

    SHEP (CONT’D)

    This is really serious.

    LAURA

I take food in. She eats very

    little. Doesn’t talk. Doesn’t even

    say “Thanks.”

    DARIN

Has she taken a shower or washed

    her hair?

    LAURA

No. She doesn’t call any of her

    friends. They’re calling me now

    since she doesn’t answer.

    SHEP

I think it’s time for an

    intervention.

    DARIN

And if that doesn’t work, we need

to call somebody. Has she tried to

    hurt herself?

    LAURA

Not that I’m aware of, but I

stopped her from beating her chest

hard the night this all went down.

    SHEP

    What’s a good time?

    LAURA

It better be soon; she ships out

    the end of next week.

They get their phones, coordinate time for an intervention.

INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – EARLY THAT EVENING

Laura enters Andrea’s bedroom, gets Andrea’s bathrobe, sits

    on side of the bed.

    66.

    67.

    LAURA

Andrea? Andrea? I need you to roll

    over for a minute. Okay?

    Andrea doesn’t move.

    LAURA (CONT’D)

Andrea, please. I haven’t bugged ya

for five days; I’ve fixed yur meals

    ANDREA

I never asked you to do that, and I

    don’t need a guilt trip.

    LAURA

I know, and I didn’t mean it that

    way.

    ANDREA

    Well, it sounded that way.

    LAURA

Please, just roll over and give me

    a minute.

    Andrea sighs, rolls over.

    ANDREA

    There. Now what?

    LAURA

I’m not gonna ask ya to get

    dressed.

    ANDREA

Good, because I don’t plan to.

    LAURA

But I’m gonna ask ya to put on yur

robe ‘n let me comb yur hair.

    ANDREA

    Why? Are we going shopping?

    LAURA

You know what Andrea, this is

    gettin’ old real fast.

Andrea stays quiet. She gives in.

    LAURA (CONT’D)

There’s someone here to see ya.

    67.

    68.

    ANDREA

    I don’t…

    LAURA

They’re coming in whether ya wan’em

to or not, and I think ya oughta

put on yur robe, and let me comb

    yur hair. Now, sit up.

Andrea fusses and complies. Laura helps with the robe, and

    she combs Andrea’s hair.

    LAURA (CONT’D)

    There. Thank you.

Laura a leaves and Darin enters. Andrea looks away.

    DARIN

I know you’re mad at me, and I’m

truly sorry, Andi. I was in the

middle; whatever I did, I would

    betray someone.

    Andrea turns to him.

    DARIN (CONT’D)

    I shouldn’t’ve betrayed you, and I

never will again. I don’t want to

    lose you, Andi, ever.

    Andrea lowers her head.

    DARIN (CONT’D)

I would really love to have a hug,

    and get a fresh start.

Andrea stands up. Wobbles from weakness. Darin catches her,

they hug for a long time. Andrea starts to cry. Darin helps

    her back into bed.

    DARIN (CONT’D)

    Am I forgiven?

    ANDREA

It’s easy to forgive the people I

    love, especially when I understand.

    DARIN

By the way, Brad put himself into

rehab, and believe it or not he

said he hopes you get well soon.

    There’s hope.

    68.

    69.

Darin leans over and gives Andrea a kiss on the cheek and

    leaves. Shep enter.

    ANDREA

Now this is surprise. I thought you

    lived in the park.

    SHEP

    I hear you’re a lazy bum.

    ANDREA

    That’s me.

    SHEP

So, “What’s the buzz, tell me

    what’s a happenin’.

Andrea joins in and sings, What’s the buzz” from Jesus Christ

    Super Star.

    ANDREA

    What’s the buzz, tell me

    what’s a happenin’ What’s the

    buzz, tell me what’s a

    happenin’ What’s the buzz,

    tell me what’s a happenin’

    SHEP (CONT’D)

    What’s the buzz, tell me

    what’s a happenin’ What’s the

    buzz, tell me what’s a

    happenin’ What’s the buzz,

    tell me what’s a happenin’

    ANDREA (CONT’D)

I didn’t know you were into

    musicals.

    SHEP

I love Jesus Christ Super Star. And

ol’ JC was a master of forgiveness,

    too.

    ANDREA

    Clever.

    SHEP

So what’s really going on with you,

    Andrea?

    ANDREA

    I’ll make you a deal.

    SHEP

    Okay.

    ANDREA

You tell me your real name, and

I’ll tell you what’s going on with

    me.

    69.

    70.

    SHEP

So that’s what you’ve been doing

for five days – scheming. Okay, as

long as you keep it a secret no

    matter who asks you. Deal?

    ANDREA

    Deal.

    SHEP

    (Whispers name)

    Just the first name.

    ANDREA

    Ooooo, I like it.

    SHEP

    Now your turn.

    ANDREA

    I love Justin, can’t have him. I

hate my father, can’t forgive him,

    Dislike myself, can’t seem to

change me, and I’m tired of trying

    to any of them.

    SHEP

Wow! No problem. Come back to me,

and well take care of all three.

    ANDREA

If only. First, I’m shipping out at

    he end of next week.

    SHEP

I’ve already figured out how to get

    around that.

    ANDREA

    I’m not quitting my job!

    SHEP

    Of course not.

    ANDREA

I got it. I got it. You’re going

    with me.

    SHEP

Not a bad idea, but no.

    ANDREA

    Soooooooo

    70.

    71.

    SHEP

Set an appointment, and I’ll tell

you how we can make it work.

    ANDREA

So, you’ve been using my five days

    to scheme, too, huh.

    SHEP

    Deal?

    ANDREA

I’ll get back to you on that, but

    kudos for the try!

    SHEP

    I hope you’ll come back, Andrea. I

    love working with – strangely

enough, and I really think I can

help, and that’s my greatest joy.

    Andrea stays quiet.

    SHEP (CONT’D)

    Luv ya, Andi.

Shep leaves. Someone knocks on the door, Justin steps in.

    Andrea bursts into tears.

    JUSTIN

    Andi, Andi, Andi.

    ANDREA

Oh, Justin. Please hold me. I know

you’re seeing someone else, so I

know the boundaries, but I just

need you to hold me for just a

    minute.

Justin goes to the edge of the bed, sits down and holds

Andrea in his arms. They are both quiet for a few.

    JUSTIN

I’m glad you know the truth,

Andrea, and I want you to know that

we need to keep a part for a while

longer, but one day, we will be

able to stay in touch again. Okay?

Andrea can’t speak. She nods her head.

    ANDREA

You have no idea what you’ve done

    for me today, Justin.

    71.

    ANDREA (CONT’D)

    72.

Hope, not for us, I know, but hope

that one day you will be able to

see I have actually forgiven my

    father for real.

    JUSTIN

I will be looking forward to that,

    Andrea.

    EXT. ANDREA’S PATIO – CONTINUOUS

Justin leaves. Laura, Darin, Shep, and Justin convene on the

    patio.

    LAURA

Oh, I hope this made a difference.

    JUSTIN

    I felt like it did.

    LAURA

Justin, I know ya had to think hard

and long, but I’m tickled pink –

    meanin’ thrilled that you came.

    DARIN

We hugged. That was good, but I

don’t know how far that’ll go.

    SHEP

I think we had a “fun” time, but I

    didn’t succeed in getting a

    commitment to keep seeing me.

    LAURA

Only time will tell, and yes, Shep,

I know time is only an illusion.

    Everyone laughs.

    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS

    LAURA

By the way, Matt stopped by earlier

and asked me to give you this.

    Laura hands Andrea a card.

    ANDREA

    Thank you, Laura, for everything.

    ANDREA (CONT’D)

    72.

    73.

    LAURA

    You’re very welcome.

    Laura goes to living room.

    INT. LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Laura picks up her book, smiles, and starts reading. Soon,

    she hears the shower running.

Jeanne Sanner Actually, what is below is a combination of lessons 18, 19, and 20. Long story as to why! What I have learned in doing Act 3 is how important it is to scenes effectively lead up to scene 4. I knew what I wanted to accomplish, but it wasn’t making sense on it’s own. So, I kept going back and forth to scenes 1, 2, and 3 to make scene 4 work. I loved the whole process. I love the creativity, and the challenges and the ways to get out of the boxes I got myself into. I don’t how a professional would look at what I have done, but I like how the story is progressing. Again, I love the process Hal and his group have created. The lessons are doable in one day, and they build on each other beautifully.

    ACT 3
    INT. DARIN’S KITCHEN – SATURDAY MID-MORNING.
Darin is finishing breakfast. Brad enters, in underwear, goes
to fridge, grabs a beer. Leaves.
Brad puts dishes in sink, goes to bedroom, Brad is getting
dressed. Darin sits on unmade bed.
Brad doesn’t look at Darin at all. He’s buttoning shirt,
looking in mirror to comb hair, etc.
    BRAD
    So, what’s up?
    BRAD (CONT’D)
    Jesus Christ, Darin, you’ve been
    saying that all week.
    DARIN
And you haven’t made any time all
    week.
    BRAD
So, go ahead talk. I can guess the
    topic.
    DARIN
You probably can. It’s what your
    drinking is doing to me.
    BRAD
Then it’s your problem isn’t it.
    DARIN
You need help, Brad. Really. You
    have a serious problem.
    BRAD
Maybe you’re the one with the
problem, Darin. Maybe you need help
    with how to be married.
    41.
    42.
    DARIN
I do need help. I need help with
knowing how to live with an
    alcoholic.
Brad swings around and backhands Darin so hard he’s thrown
off the bed. Brad leans down, points his finger in Darin’s
    face.
    BRAD
Don’t you ever say that word to me
    again.
    Brad leaves.
EXT. PARK BENCH – LATE MORNING
Darin talks with Shep. Darin’s cheek is already swollen and
    bruised.
    SHEP
So you think love means that you
continue to live with Brad for
    better or for worse.
    DARIN
    That’s what we promised.
    SHEP
That is not what you promised.
    DARIN
    What do you mean?
    SHEP
You promised to stay with him, not
    live with him.
    DARIN
    What’s the difference?
    SHEP
Love means you don’t turn your back
on him. It means you remain
    supportive. It means you don’t
judge him and that you embrace his
freedom to follow his path, his
    journey.
    DARIN
Are you saying I should leave him?
    42.
    43.
    SHEP
    I don’t give advice.
    DARIN
    Then what are you saying?
    SHEP
There are many ways to stay in his
    life, to remain supportive, to
    avoid judgment, to embrace his
freedom. You have choices, but only
you can decide what to choose.
    DARIN
I don’t know what to do.
    SHEP
Yes you do, you just haven’t
listened to your highest self yet.
    Have you asked?
    DARIN
How do I know if I’m listening to
    my highest voice.
    SHEP
It will always be coming from love,
and it will give you peace, even if
the decision is a difficult one.
    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – SUNDAY – MORNING
Andrea puts on jogging clothes and calls Darin.
    ANDREA
Oh, good, you’re home. Laura said
    you’ve called several times. I’m
going for a run, want to join me?
    DARIN
Of course! Out of the office,
exercise, and you. Wow! I’ve been
striving for that combo all week.
    EXT. PARK – MORNING
Andrea and Darin are walking. His face is bruised.
    DARIN
Not yet, but I’m getting close.
    43.
    44.
    ANDREA
    What’ll you do?
    DARIN
    Move out.
    ANDREA
    Actually, I’ll be setting sail
soon. I can ask Laura if she would
like a roommate while I’m gone.
    DARIN
I have another friend who travels a
lot, too, and he said I could stay
at his house if I wanted.
    ANDREA
I’m really sorry, Darin. I know you
    loved him.
    DARIN
That’s the problem. I still do.
Shep has been a big help, though.
    ANDREA
    Shep? How?
They pull sandwiches and water from their fannie packs.
    DARIN
He’s helped me see that love,
doesn’t mean you take abuse. We
    have choices.
    ANDREA
    True.
    DARIN
He taught me I need to ACCEPT Brad
    unconditionally, meaning, I
    shouldn’t try to change him…
    ANDREA
    We can’t really change anybody
    anyway.
    DARIN
True, but I sure have tried! That’s
    been my main focus.
    ANDREA
    I understand completely.
    44.
    45.
    DARIN
Anyway, we also need to love
ourself enough to say good-bye, if
    that’s what we need…Hey, that’s
enough about me. How are you?
    ANDREA
    Confused, depleted, discouraged,
    lost, lonely, tired…Should I go
    on?
    Darin laughs and nods.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
You know, Darin, before I tell you
about my week, I need to ask you
    something really important.
    DARIN
    Okay. Anything.
    ANDREA
Why don’t you and Laura tell me how
to forgive my father? You two
    seemed to have conquered the
    forgiveness problem.
    DARIN
Believe me, Andrea, we want to help
you, but we’ve come to see that
    Shep’s method of finding
    forgiveness really works.
    Andrea sighs.
    ANDREA
Well then, here’s what the two of
you have put me through. My search
for how to forgive my father
    started with a minister…
    FADE OUT:
    FADE IN:
    EXT. PARK – CONTINUOUS
    ANDREA
    Everything I thought would help,
failed. So, I went to the library.
    DARIN
    Did you find anything there?
    45.
    46.
    ANDREA
    Two books look promising, but…
    DARIN
I know you’ll find the answer.
Darin pats bench where Shep sits.
    DARIN (CONT’D)
You know my solution. As Shep says,
    ooooops, I almost slipped.
    ANDREA
    Yea. If only…
INT. ANDREA’S KITCHEN – EARLY EVENING
Andrea and Laura sitting at kitchen table, dinner is done,
    finishing a glass of wine.
    LAURA’
Well, I better freshen up. I’m
meeting Matt for a cup of coffee.
    ANDREA
    Oh, that’s right. It’s Monday
    night. (Imitating southern accent).
Don’t you keep that yungin’ out too
    late now ya hear?
    LAURA
    Come with me?
    ANDREA
He didn’t invite me for dinner and
    then settle for coffee.
    LAURA
    Seriously, Andi, I’m not
    comfortable after he lied and
seemed to want to hug me for more
    than just a thank you.
Laura looks at Andrea with pleading eyes. Andrea slumps.
    ANDREA
Okay. I’ll be your body guard.
    They laugh.
    46.
    47.
EXT. IN FRONT OF MATT’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Andrea is sitting in the back seat. Matt opens car door, does
    not see Andrea. Hi beautiful.
    LAURA
Hi Matt. Andrea asked if she could
tag along, and I said why not, but
you don’t have to pick up her tab.
Matt’s smile fades, then returns quickly as he gets in the
car. He recovers from the unexpected intruder.
    MATT
Oh, Hi Andrea. Well, the more the
    marrier, right?
INT. COFFEE SHOP – MONDAY NIGHT
Andrea, Matt, and Laura sit at a table. WAITER brings orders.
Laura – soda, Andrea and Matt – beer. Matt raises his bottle
    to make a toast.
    MATT
Roberto used to love to give
toasts. (Whispers) I think it was
just so he could drink more.
    Everyone laughs.
So I want to honor his tradition.
First, to Laura for all her
kindness! Thank you Laura for being
    my comforter and taxi driver.
    They clink glasses.
    ANDREA
    To Laura.
    MATT (CONT’D)
    To Laura.
    LAURA
    (With exaggerated accent)
    Thank y’all! Thank y’all! Thank
    y’all soooo much!
    MATT
And now, to Andrea for her
courage… My heart hurt for you at
dinner. It made me cry inside, but
you have survived it, and I am
    happy.
    47.
    48.
    LAURA
    To Andrea!
    MATT (CONT’D)
    To Andrea!
    ANDREA
    (Tongue in cheek)
Aw, shucks you guys. You shouldn’t
    have!
    They clink glasses.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
And let’s get together again to
celebrate when I have the courage
    to finally forgive my father.
    Matt gets serious.
    MATT
What? Did you say you want to
forgive him? You really want to
forgive him for the way he treated
    you? Why? Why?
    ANDREA
I want what Laura has now, peace
    and joy.
    MATT
Peace? You think you can find peace
in forgiveness? No way! Your father
    doesn’t deserve it. No way!
    LAURA
Actually, Matt, I found it hard to
forgive my mom for something, but
    when I finally did, wow!
    MATT
Unh Unh Sometimes it isn’t even
possible to forgive. How can you do
    that? I don’t get it.
Matt is restless, his face is taught and red.
    MATT (CONT’D)
    Well,
Matt rocks back and forth, stares at table, sips beer, slams
bottle down, makes a fist, rubs it into palm of other hand.
    48.
    49.
    MATT (CONT’D)
There ain’t no way I want to
    forgive them cops that killed
Roberto! Nooooo way! Noooo way man!
    Unh unh
Matt pounds table with fist. Andrea jumps. They sit quietly.
    ANDREA
Oh, God. We’re so sorry for your
    pain, Matt…What you’ve been
    through is horrible.
    LAURA
Is there anything we can do to
    help?
    MATT
I’m the only one who can fix it,
and one day I will. I will, but it
won’t be with forgiveness. No way!
    Matt jumps up. He’s fidgeting.
    MATT (CONT’D)
Can you take me home now? I need
to go home. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
Laura gets up, and gives Matt a hug.
    MATT (CONT’D)
There’s nothing to be sorry about,
    Matt. Really!
Laura escorts Matt out. Andrea signals for the bill.
INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM – LATE MONDAY NIGHT
Andrea stretched out on couch, Laura in lounge chair.
    ANDREA
He actually scared me! His anger
was so intense. Did you feel it?
    LAURA
Oooooh, yes! I’m so glad you were
    there, Andrea.
    ANDREA
I’m glad he asked us to take him
home before things got really out
    of hand.
    49.
    50.
    Silence.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
    Laura…
    LAURA
    What?
    ANDREA
I wasn’t just scared of Matt. I was
scared of myself. I saw myself in
    him!
    Laura stays quiet.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
I really do need help. I really do
need to change, and I’ve decided to
    set an appointment with Shep.
    Laura smiles.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
Maybe if I do solve all this, I can
show Justin on our next cruise
    assignment, that I’ve honestly
    changed.
    LAURA
    Welcome back, Andrea.
EXT. PARK – THURSDAY – MORNING
Shep, a 32 year old Jamaican, handsome, 6’, great smile,
accent, is sitting on bench, Andrea approaches. Shep stands.
    SHEP
    Good morning.
Andrea’s eye brows go up, jaw drops.
    ANDREA,
So you do have a voice. It’s a very
nice voice as a matter of fact
    with, what? Jamaican I assume?
    They sit. Shep keeps smiling.
    SHEP
    Proudly!
    ANDREA
    Do you have a name?
    50.
    51.
    SHEP
I’ll keep the one you all have
given me for now. I like it!
    ANDREA
Okay. I’m not one for small talk,
Shep, so let me be honest with you.
I need help, but I can’t deal with
    the index cards.
    SHEP
    Okay.
Andrea pauses, looks carefully at Shep.
    ANDREA
    Really?
    SHEP
    Yep.
    ANDREA
I’m not going to ask why; I’m just
    goin’ with it.
    SHEP
    However…
    ANDREA
    I knew it.
    SHEP
I’m still going with just a phrase
    per session for awhile. It’s
    important that you answer some
    questions on your own. Okay?
    ANDREA
    It depends; however… you said,
“Forgiving is not something we can
    do.” What do you mean?
    SHEP
    Forgiving isn’t something we can
do. Forgiveness is the result of
    what we stop doing.
    ANDREA
What do we need to stop doing?
    SHEP
Ah, think about that over the
weekend. I’ll see you Monday at
    11:00.
    51.
    52.
    Andrea sits silently.
    ANDREA
Okay. I’ll try it your way for now.
INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM – THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Andrea has returned from her visit with Shep. Laura is
    reading a romance novel.
    LAURA
    How did it go?
    ANDREA
Half and half. Index cards are out,
but single phrases are still in.
    LAURA
    That sounds fair.
    ANDREA
Right. So, I’m supposed to figure
out what it is we are to stop
    doing. Got any hints?
    LAURA
    Unh, unh.
    They laugh.
    ANDREA
A romance novel. Are you picturing
anyone in particular as you read?
    LAURA
    I’m not tellin’.
EXT. PARK BENCH – MONDAY MORNING
Andrea is sharing her list with Shep.
    ANDREA
Okay. What we are to stop doing:
One, stop reacting to everything my
    father says.
    SHEP
That’s a good idea, but how does
    that lead to forgiveness?
    ANDREA
    It avoids conflict.
    52.
    53.
    SHEP
But it doesn’t take you anywhere.
    ANDREA
    Okay. Two. Stop taking everything
    personally.
    SHEP
Beautiful, but – let me ask you
this. How can you see him
    differently. That is the key.
    ANDREA
    Close my eyes?
They both laugh heartily! Shep looks at Andrea. He reflects
    love, patience, and respect.
    SHEP
I love you, Andrea. You are
    priceless.
    ANDREA
    So are you, Shep.
    SHEP
I can see I’m going to break all my
rules with you, partly because you
will be shipping out soon. So, what
we have to stop doing is:
    condemning.
    ANDREA
Wait. Wait. Are you saying I have
to stop condemning how he treated
me and who he is as a father?
    SHEP
    Yes.
    ANDREA
Well, Shep. I think we’re done
here. There is no way I cannot
condemn him. Sorry, what he did is
    wrong, wrong, wrong. Period, the
    end, amen.
    SHEP
There is a way, Andrea. I promise
you, but you must be willing to
seek it with an open mind.
    53.
    54.
    ANDREA
You are a wonderful, gentle, loving
human being, Shep, but I will not
    be making any more appointments.
INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM – MONDAY LATE MORNING
Laura is on the couch reading a different romance novel.
Andrea is in the kitchen getting a soda.
    ANDREA OS
I’m sorry Laura, I really am. I had
hope, but there is no way I can
stop condemning what my father has
    done.
    LAURA
I understand, Andi. I felt the same
way until Shep explained how to do
it, but my situation is so much
    different from yours.
    ANDREA
    Is it? Isn’t forgiveness,
    forgiveness? Anyway, I’m going to
do what I need to do. I’m going to
    face my fear head-on.
    Laura pops straight up.
    LAURA
    What do mean?
    ANDREA
I am going to invite my father out
to dinner, and we’ll go to his
    favorite Italian restaurant.
Laura grimaces. Andrea doesn’t see her.
    INT. ITALIAN RESTAURANT – NIGHT
Andrea’s father is sitting along near the back. He is sipping
a glass of wine. Andrea enters.
Tells host she sees whom she has come to meet. Goes to table.
Her father stands, goes to hug Andrea. Her body becomes
rigid, she frowns, she avoids the attempt. She relaxes when
she is seated. (He repulses her, but she is trying.)
    54.
    55.
    FATHER
I know the phone call and the
invitation must have been hard for
you, and I sincerely appreciate you
    reaching out.
    He signals for a waiter.
    ANDREA
I just want peace between us.
    FATHER
So do I. Shall we order?
The waiter arrives. They order. As they wait.
    FATHER (CONT’D)
    Did you die your hair?
    ANDREA
    It’s highlighted.
    FATHER
    Looks a little harsh.
    ANDREA
    I like it.
Andrea sits quietly while her father talks incessantly while
waiting for dinner. Dinner arrives. Andrea is eating her
    salad.
    FATHER
Why do you eat your salad with your
dinner fork? We taught you better
    than that.
    ANDREA
I like to put a lot of
    different…Do you realize, how
often you criticize me, what I do,
how I look, my choice of career.
    FATHER
    Oh, Andrea. That’s ridiculous, and
I don’t know why you have to be so
difficult all the time. I thought
we were to have a good time
    tonight.
    ANDREA
That’s a perfect example, and my
    purpose is a little different.
    55.
    56.
    FATHER
What’s your purpose? To whine about
the past. To attack me? You think I
never say a kind thing to you, do
you ever say a kind thing to me?
    ANDREA
If I’m to have peace with you, I
    need an apology.
    FATHER
For what? For loving you? For
teaching you how to enjoy intimacy?
How to handle yourself in the
    bedroom, unlike your frigid mother,
so you can have a wonderful
    marriage. Am I supposed to
apologize for that? You should be
    thanking me.
    Andrea stands up. Gets loud.
    ANDREA
Thanking you for raping me for
    years. For intimidating, scaring,
and hurting me physically and every
other way? It was never consensual.
I was manipulated from day one.
What do you mean manipulated? You loved it.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
I hated your smell; I hated your
body on me; I hated all the sounds
    you made; I hated that I couldn’t
    tell anyone, especially mom.
    FATHER
Sit down, and keep your voice down.
    I have friends in here.
    ANDREA
And I hated all the counseling
sessions, and I hated every time
you came near me. And guess what
    else…
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
I finally told mom, that’s why she
left you. Too bad she didn’t live
long enough to enjoy life without
you! It’s like I’ve said all along,
    it’s impossible to ever forgive
    you.
    56.
    57.
Andrea grabs her purse and leaves. Lots of people are trying
not to stare, but can’t help it.
    ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM
Laura is on the couch reading another romance novel. She
looks toward Andrea’s room and listens for any sound of life.
Andrea is lying on her well-made bed. She is wearing the last
night’s outfit. She has bags under her eyes. Her make-up is
    smeared.
    ANDREA’S PHONE RINGS
    LAURA
Do you want me to get that for you,
    Andi?
Andrea doesn’t answer, enters living room, picks up phone.
    ANDREA
    Hi Darin. What’s up?
    Andrea listens.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
Of course. I got another six-pack
on the way home last night. See ya
    soon.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
    (To Laura)
    Doesn’t sound good.
    LAURA
I want to know how you are. From
how you look, I would guess not
    well.
    ANDREA
    I’ll fill you in later.
    TEN MINUTES LATER
    DOORBELL RINGS
Darin walks in, heads to lounge chair. Andrea heads to the
    kitchen, gets beer.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
    What’s goin’ on, Darin?
    57.
    58.
    DARIN
I just can’t stay there right now.
He’s on a rampage about his boss.
    He quit his job.
    LAURA
    Quit or got fired?
    DARIN
He says quit. I tried to sit and
listen – not even offer advice or
anything, and the next thing you
know he’s blaming me some how.
    LAURA
Well, you’re welcome to stay as
long as you want. This couch has a
    very comfy bed hiding inside.
    DARIN
He usually goes to the gym on
Thursdays, so I’m hoping to be able
to go home for a little while.
He takes out his phone. Looks for messages. Puts it on the
end table beside the lounge chair.
    DARIN (CONT’D)
    I’m expecting a call from a new
client. Do you have a notepad?
    ANDREA
    Sure.
Andrea leaves, comes back with a notepad and pen.
    DARIN
Thanks, Andi. I gotta go to the
john. My stomach is a mess.
Darin puts beer on end table near chair. Rushes to bathroom.
    LAURA
I’m so sorry for him. They were so
    happy at their wedding. Remember?
    ANDREA
    It’s sad.
    DARIN’S PHONE RINGS.
    58.
    59.
    DARIN OS
Andi, can you get that, it may be
my client. Act like a secretary and
tell him I’ll call him back.
Andrea picks up the phone, looks to see who it is and freezes
in place. The phone continues to ring.
    DARIN OS (CONT’D)
Andi, are going to get that?
    ANDREA
    It’s Justin.
    DARIN OS
Oh, shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Don’t
answer it. I’ll get back with him
    later.
Darin eventually appears. The girls are on the couch; waiting
    patiently and quietly.
    DARIN
    Sorry, Andi. Really.
    ANDREA
So is Justin your other friend who
travels a lot and whose place you
    may use while he’s gone.
    DARIN
    Yes.
    ANDREA
    How is he?
    DARIN
    Fine.
    ANDREA
    Is he seeing anyone?
    DARIN
    Andi..
    ANDREA
    Is he Darin?
    DARIN
    Yes.
    ANDREA
Is she in the cruise industry, too.
    59.
    60.
    DARIN
No. Actually, no. She’s realtor he
met while looking for a new place.
    ANDREA
    What else?
    DARIN
    What do ya mean?
    ANDREA
What else have you been keeping
    from me.
    DARIN
Well, you’ll find out soon enough.
    He’s changed cruise assignments.
Andrea goes to her room and closes her door.
    DARIN (CONT’D)
I’m gonna go. Justin was calling to

    Jeanne Sanner Reaction to Midpoint

What I got from this assignment: again, I got the value of outlining. It makes the scenes write themselves.

    ACT 3

Key Scene 1 – React/rethink the new reality revealed by Mid-point

Key Scene 2 – Makes a new plan.

Key Scene 3 – Things start going well, until…

Key Scene 4 – Turning Point – Protagonist faces their lowest low

Scene 1 –Andrea shares her mission with Matt. Matt confesses he cannot forgive the police who killed his brother. Andrea gets together with Brad.

Scene 2 – Andrea goes to OC

Scene 3 – Things start going well, until…

Scene 4 – Andrea goes to dinner with her Father, things fall apart. Andrea learns that Justin has signed up for a different cruise ship. Laura tells Andrea that she may ultimately move in with Shep.

    ACT 3

    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – SATURDAY – MORNING

Andrea is putting on jogging clothes, is calling Darin.

    Andrea’s tone is somber.

    ANDREA

Oh, good, you’re home. I’m going

for a little run, can you join me?

Darin hears Andrea’s tone. Keeps his tone light.

    DARIN

Of course! Out of the office,

exercise, and you! Wow! Can’t beat

    that!

    EXT. PARK – MORNING

    Andrea and Darin are walking.

    DARIN

Not yet, but I’m getting close.

    ANDREA

    What will you do?

    DARIN

    Move out.

    ANDREA

I’m really sorry, Darin. I know you

    loved him.

    DARIN

That’s the problem. I still do. If

it weren’t for Shep, I would be in

    worse shape.

    ANDREA

    Shep?

    DARIN

Yea, he’s been helping me sort

    through the labyrinth.

    ANDREA

    How?

They pull sandwiches and water from the fanny paks.

    41.

    42.

    DARIN

By helping me see that love, even

    unconditional love, doesn’t mean

you take abuse. You have choices.

    ANDREA

    Choices? But, really, Darin, don’t

    choices mean conditions?

    DARIN

He taught me I am to ACCEPT Brad

    unconditionally, meaning, I

    shouldn’t try to change him…

    ANDREA

    We can’t really change anybody

    anyway.

    DARIN

True, but I sure have tried!

Anyway, we also need to love

ourself enough to say good-bye, if

that’s what we need… Now, enough

about me! I came with you to see

    how you are!

    ANDREA

    Confused, discouraged, lost,

    lonely, tired…Should I go on?

    Darin nods.

    ANDREA (CONT’D)

My search for how to forgive

    started with a minister.

    FADE OUT:

    FADE IN:

    EXT. PARK – CONTINUOUS

    ANDREA

    Everything I thought would help,

failed. So, I went to my sanctuary –

    the library.

    DARIN

    Did you find anything there?

    42.

    43.

    ANDREA

    Two books look promising, but…

    DARIN

    God, I admire your determination,

    Andi.

    Andrea smiles.

Darin pats bench where Shep sits.

    DARIN (CONT’D)

    You know my solution.

    ANDREA

    Yea. If only…

<div>Jeanne Sanner Has completed Act 2 Draft 1</div>

What I learned from doing this assignment. One thing was how interesting that some characters show up and do things I had not at all expected. Matt in my story was never in my mind when I started; now I have a plan for him that I think will add another level to my story. Two, I just can’t get over how the first lessons, which create the basic outline has been so crucial. I have not had to think about what comes next, I just need to create the images and dialogue to make the story come to life!

INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM NEXT DAY – AFTERNOON.
Laura is home alone falling asleep with a book in her hand.
    DOORBELL
Laura gets up startled and answers the door.
    LAURA
Oh, hi Matt. Come on in.
    32.
    33.
    LAURA (CONT’D)
What a nice surprise. How’d you
    find us?
    MATT
Uh, Darin gave me your address.
    He’s a great guy.
    LAURA
Yes, he is. You want a beer? I’m
    gonna have one.
Laura goes to kitchen, gets beer. Matt stays standing looking
    around.
    MATT
    Oh, no. I can’t stay long. I got a
    bus to catch.
Laura comes in, sits on couch, motions Matt to lounge chair,
but he sits on the couch instead.
    LAURA
    Didn’t you start work yesterday?
    MATT
    We had orientation yesterday and
    this morning. I start tomorrow.
    Wednesday through Sunday nights.
    LAURA
    Bummer of a schedule!
    MATT
    Yea. All newbies get those.
Awkward silence. Matt moves in a little closer to Laura.
    MATT (CONT’D)
Actually, I came over to ask you if
I could take you to dinner Monday
night to say thank you for all your
    kindness.
    LAURA
What a thoughtful idea, Matt, but
you just started a new job, and
dinner can be a bit much. How ‘bout
we go for a cuppa coffee instead?
    33.
    34.
    MATT
    (Surprised to get a yes)
Oh. That would be great! I still
take the bus, so what’s a good
    place we could meet?
    LAURA
Tell you what. I’ll pick you up
around 8. Is that good for you?
    MATT
    Yea, sure. It’s a date! Listen, I
gotta a bus to catch. I’ll see ya
    Monday night. Thanks, Laura.
Matt goes to hug her, changes his mind, leaves. Laura goes
back to her book and beer.
    LAURA’S PHONE RINGS
    LAURA
    Hey, Darin. How…
    DARIN
    Hi Laura. Is Andrea there?
    LAURA
No. She’s on some kinda mission.
    Isn’t she answering her phone?
    DARIN
    No. Damn it.
    LAURA
    Can I help?
    DARIN
    No. Thanks.
    LAURA
By the way, guess who just left?
    DARIN
Left your place? I have no clue.
    You have too many friends.
    LAURA
    Matt.
    DARIN
Matt? That little rascal. How did
    he find you?
    34.
    35.
    LAURA
    (Confused)
    What do you mean?
    DARIN
How did he find where you live?
    LAURA
He told me you told him.
    Silence on both ends.
    DARIN
No way, Laura. You know I wouldn’t
do that without calling you first.
    LAURA
Yea, but he’s your friend, so…
    DARIN
Not really. Roberto was my friend.
I just try to include Matt at times
    because he lost his brother.
    LAURA
Hmm. Anyway, I’ll tell Andrea to
call you when I see her.
Next we see a montage of Andrea going to various sources
    seeking the truth.
    INT. CHURCH – MONDAY MORNING
Andrea is sitting in a pew with a MINISTER.
    ANDREA
How can I forgive 70 times 7 times
when I can’t even forgive once, and
as to “forgive them for they know
not what they do,” you can shove
it…let’s just say, my father knew
exactly what he was doing. Thanks
    so much.
    EXT. PARK – MONDAY MORNING
    Laura is meeting with OC.
    35.
    36.
EXT. SERENE GARDEN – EARLY TUESDAY MORNING
Andrea is sitting in the lotus position under a beautiful
tree in a serene garden with a GURU.
    ANDREA
So your answer is, the world is an
    illusion, and nothing matters, so
why worry. Thank you so much, Mr.
    Neuman.
INT. DEN – LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING
Andrea joins a MYSTIC in an opium den smoking and humming Om.
    ANDREA
    Forgiveness has some wonderful
colors, doesn’t it? Is this only
way to see it? Hmmm Thanks so much,
    I think.
INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Andrea is still in her pjs recovering from her episode in the
den. She is sitting at her computer looking at a website for
an abuse counselor: “a new approach with proven results.”
    Laura is debating.
    ANDREA
    (Saying to herself)
    Dare I see another counselor?
    She calls the number.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
    Cancellation? Great! I’d like to
    take that appointment…Thank you.
    See you tomorrow morning.
    EXT. PARK – THURSDAY AFTERNOON
    Laura is meeting with OC.
    36.
    37.
INT. COUNSELOR’S OFFICE – FRIDAY MORNING
    ANDREA
So your answer is: that forgiveness
    isn’t necessary, that everyone is
doing the best they can, even
    parents who rape their children,
and that we should just accept that
and move on. Thanks so much.
    INT. LIBRARY – FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Andrea is in the library looking at self-help books on
forgiveness. She selects two books: “Love is Letting Go of
Fear” and “Finding Unconditional Love a Little Peace at a
    Time” and checks out.
INT. ANDREA’S KITCHEN – FRIDAY NIGHT
Andrea and Laura are eating dinner.
    LAURA
So the counselor didn’t work out
    either?
    ANDREA
Oh, my God, no! But I refuse to
give up. I got two books at the
    library; maybe they’ll help. How
    was your day.
    LAURA
    Truefully…oooops
    ANDREA
    That’s okay; it was stupid
statement, and I’m over it now. So,
    truethfully…
    LAURA
I had one of the most wonderful
    days of my life.
Andrea looks up to see if Laura is being facetious.
    ANDREA
Really? Oh my God. What happened?
    LAURA
    I went to see Mom.
Laura starts to cry, Andrea’s not sure why Laura’s crying.
    37.
    38.
    LAURA (CONT’D)
And it feels so good to be hugged
by Mom again, and to be at peace,
and to be happy again, and I never
want to be mad at her ever again.
Andrea gets up, signals Laura to get up. Andrea hugs Laura.
    ANDREA
I’m so happy for you, Laura. I know
you’ve been hiding a lot of pain.
It took courage to finally go
    there. Wow!
Andrea gently wipes Laura’s face with a napkin, helps her back
in her seat, and goes back to her seat.
    ANDREA (CONT’D)
I envy you, Laura! How did you do
    it?
    LAURA
    OC.
    ANDREA
    OC? OC!
    LAURA
I went back to him. He even met
with more than just Monday and
    Thursday at the park. He’s
    wonderful, Andrea, really. He’s so
    deep, and understanding, and
    compassionate.
    ANDREA
    I’m glad, Laura. I just don’t know
if I can take this one phrase at a
    time business.
    LAURA
    But it works!
    ANDREA
How? It seems so stupid to me.
It forced me to think on my own,
and the realizations were so much
more meaningful since I came to
them myself… I wish you would
    give him a chance.

What I’ve learned from this assignment is: how important a midpoint turning point is to the arc of the plot and for the development of the character.

Laura is In the library looking at all the self-help books on forgiveness. She is rubbing her eyes, and decides to go home defeated.

A week later, Andrea sees that Laura has successfully visited her mother, and decides to go back to the odd character.

Jeanne Sanner – ACT 2 Key scenes 2 and 3

ACT 2 OUTLINES FOR SCENES 2 AND 3

What I learned from this lesson: I am seeing how failure increases tension which makes the story more interesting. Obstacles create tension. I like the structure. It is clear and it progresses at an effective pace.

    ACT 2 OUTLINE SCENE 2

Andrea realizes her hatred of her father is wrong and damaging

Andrea goes with Laura to see OC hoping he can help

We see how odd OC really is

    Laura finds him fascinating

Andrea thinks he’s silly, this plan is a failure.

    OUTLINE ACT 2 SCENE 3

Andrea creates a plan a montage of visiting lots of people

    None of them work

Andrea sees Laura healing her relationship with her mother

Andrea decides to return to OC

    ACT 2 SCENE 2

INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – SUNDAY EARLY AFTERNOON

Andrea is still in bed, not asleep, turned away from door. Laura enters with laundry bag, goes to Andrea’s closet, picks up Andrea’s laundry bag, turns to leave, puts laundry bags down at the door, sits on the edge of the bed.

    LAURA

I’m going to do laundry and then go for a walk in the park; I would really love to have your company. (catches herself, laughs) Not for the laundry, but for the park.

Andrea rolls over and looks at Laura. Thinks.

    ANDREA

    Okay.

    LAURA

Okay? Okay? Okay! I’ll be back in about an hour.

INT. ANDREA’S KITCHEN – MONDAY MORNING

Girls are in the kitchen, cleaning up after breakfast. Laura genuinely wants company. She is not trying to manipulate Andrea. She actually prefers Darin be there, but he can’t.

    LAURA

I really would like you to go with me to see Odd Character; I’m just not comfortable going alone. You don’t have to say or do…

    ANDREA

    Okay.

Laura absorbs what Andrea said, gives Andrea a gentle hug.

While Laura is gone, Andrea gets dressed, sits on her bed, starts crying. Looks up, as if talking to God.

    ANDREA

I surrender! I know I need to forgive dad, but I don’t want to and I don’t know how! I need help!

Andrea hears Laura come in. Gets up.

    LAURA

    Hey, Andrea, are you ready?

    ANDREA

I want to put on a little make-up.

    LAURA

    For OC?

    ANDREA

    No! For me! Silly Goose.

Goes to mirror, wipes her eyes. Puts on make-up.

Laura goes to Andrea’s bedroom door.

    ANDREA

(To Laura with energy and a smile.)

    Okay. Let’s go get healed.

Laura isn’t sure what Andrea meant by “let’s,”

She chooses to think that is a good sign. She doesn’t say anything. Andrea doesn’t see Laura’s reaction.

    EXT. PARK – AFTERNOON

As Andrea and Laura approach the bench, OC stands up to greet them. Since Laura made an appointment, OC is expecting them.

In silence we seen them introduce themselves shake hands. Andrea makes it clear that she is just here as Laura’s friend. OC motions Laura to sit and he sits on bench with her. Andrea stands behind the bench.

He hands Laura a white index card. Laura reads the card.

    LAURA

(Reads to herself, then follows instructions.)

Oh! Please read this card out loud.

I teach based on my theory that everyone already knows the answer they seek, so I don’t speak; I offer signposts through note cards. Please let me know if you can be comfortable with that.

Laura nods, looks at Andrea and signals her to agree also.

    ANDREA

    Oh, sure. No problem.

When OC is not looking, Andrea gives Laura a look, like are you kidding me?

OC gives Andrea a green card to read. She briefly objects, then takes the card.

    ANDREA

“Please read out loud. I speak only in simple phrases – and only one phrase per conversation.”

Laura brought a notebook, is writing, and saying out loud…

    LAURA

Only one phrase per conversation. Got it.

    ANDREA

    (Reading)

I come here every Monday and Thursday. Make an appointment with a text. Do not tell anyone what I say. Do you agree?

    LAURA

    (writing and speaking)

Do you agree? Oh, yes, I agree!

    ANDREA

    Whatever.

OC looks at Andrea compassionately. Knowing she is not a happy camper with this process, but that’s okay with him. He hands Laura a pink card which she reads out loud.

    LAURA

First, in one sentence, tell me why you’re here.

Okay.I want to forgive my mother.

Second, explain. She cremated my father without asking me my opinion.

    Third, why is that unforgivable?

I want to be able to visit his grave anytime. Now, he’s in some urn at my mother’s house, and I can’t see him without having to go there.

OC looks through his box of index cards, pulls out a blue one and hands it to Andrea. She points to herself as if to say, Me? He just looks at her. She reads it out loud.

    ANDREA

“Forgiving is impossible.” Forgiving is impossible?

Andi and Laura look confused. They look at each other and then at him, and then they say at the same time…

The odd character pulls out an orange card, hands it to Laura. “Read the green card out loud.”

Laura has the card. Andrea reads over her shoulder.

OC hands Laura a red card.

    LAURA

Read the green card and follow the instructions.

Andrea and Laura look to see who has the green card. Andrea has the green card.

    ANDREA

I speak only…Oh, for Christ sake, we are going in circles. I’m done here. Are coming Laura?

Laura sits and ponders a bit, and says, Thank you, OC. I will think about that a lot even though right now I don’t agree.

OC smiles, and knows he has a real student!

    ACT 2 Scene 3

INT. ANDREA’S HOME – LATE AFTERNOON

Andrea is in the kitchen. Laura is in her bedroom putting her laundry way.

    ANDREA

I’m fixin’ me a whiskey sour, do want anything.

    LAURA OS

    Not right now, thanks.

INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Andrea is entering the living room from the kitchen with her drink in her hand. Heading towards lounge chair. Speaking to Laura who is now in Andrea’s bedroom putting her laundry away.

    ANDREA

    He’s an idiot!

    LAURA OS

Why do you say that when he is saying what you have been saying all along?

    ANDREA

Because I don’t believe it when I say it, but he does!

    LAURA OS

Maybe he just has a different way of defining forgiving or looking at it.

    ANDREA

Well, I’m not going back to him, that’s for sure, but now I’m determined to prove him wrong!

Tuesday, Laura is out shopping, Andrea is on the computer, intensely doing research, taking notes.

Next we see a montage of Andrea going to various sources seeking the truth. First, she has set an appointment with a counselor, then a minister, then a guru, then a mystic, then a psychic, etc. The bottom line, none of them give her what she needs!

<div>What I learned from this lesson: After walking away from my first attempt of an opening for the second act, I realized (since I have had only stage experience as an actor, director, and coach) that I tend to be writing a play. Way too much dialogue. I don’t know if I have gone too far the other way, but I cut the dialogue quite a bit. I like this result a lot better, but when I read it tomorrow, I may feel differently about it. I know I’m just go with what I create, but I have not been able to do that. I’m not experienced enough yet at speedwriting to be at peace with it. I have not given up; I’m just being honest with myself. </div>

What I learned from doing this assignment: I learned how important it is to show the main character’s reaction to what happened to her. What I don’t know if it is dramatic enough, or if it is too long. The point could be made with no dialogue, but right now I think it is important to also lay the ground work for the next step in her journey, which this scene does. Onward and upward.

Sit down. I’ll fix yours. We’re outta eggs, will cereal be okay?

    ANDREA

    (Sitting)

    I don’t care.

    LAURA

    Cheerios or Wheat Chex.

    ANDREA

    (Big Sigh)

    I don’t care.

    LAURA

    Cheerios it is. Banana?

    ANDREA

    Nods, yes.

After a pause, while getting Andrea’s cereal ready.

    LAURA

If you don’t want to talk, I understand.

    ANDREA

    There’s nothing to say.

    LAURA

    (Pause)

    Well,… I have a question.

    ANDREA

    What?

    LAURA

Do you think you’ll ever want to fix things with your father?

    ANDREA

    No.

    LAURA

Because I was thinking, maybe we should talk to that guy Darin met in the park. He really helped Darin a lot.

    ANDREA

Did he? Darin doesn’t seem too happy now.

    LAURA

Yea, but that’s different. Anyway, I was thinking of seeing him to help me get over my anger with mom.

    ANDREA

    You go right ahead.

Laura serves cereal. Puts sugar on it for Andrea.

    LAURA

I still can’t believe she cremated dad without even consulting me. Do you want juice?

    Andrea shakes her head no.

    Jeanne Sanner Finished Act 1

What I have learned in this lesson: First let me explain, that I got confused. I will not bore you with the details. The result is that today’s post includes all the things I should have been putting in Lessons 9, 10, and 11. Rather than going back and filling in those lessons, I will just work from here. Below is my ACT 1.

Second, slow writing is just not what I can do after _____ years of correcting as I go. The only play I have written is a 24 page screenplay. Others told me to slow write, and I am not exaggerating when I say, I did 47 (yes forty-seven) drafts of that sucker! Some of it was because the director kept changing actors on me, from having a brunette daughter, to having an Asian daughter, to having a blond daughter, which obviously can make a difference.

I know this is my first draft, and I realize that I will need to go back and trim, but I did stop and wordsmith and change things as I went. Maybe I will try writing shorter things, like 10 pages in the slow writing style. Anyway. I think I am now back on track, and what I have learned is that I am really enjoying creating characters and watching them grow. I even created a new character I had not thought of, and now he is going to play an interesting role in the story. Enough. On to Act 1 first Draft.

    FADE IN:

    EXT. SIDEWALK – NIGHT

BRAD,31, overly confident, high-level corporate software educator, DARIN, 29, successful webpage designer, and MATT, 25, withdrawn black man, friend of Darin walk down a San Diego sidewalk. Brad dominates the energized conversation. They arrive at their destination.

INT. RESTAURANT RESERVATION PODIUM – NIGHT

    MATT

    Paris?

    BRAD

    Yep. For three weeks!

    MATT

    You goin’ too, Darin?

Darin, Brad’s husband, takes glasses off, avoids Brad’s eyes.

    DARIN

No. I really wish I could.

The HOST arrives to check them in. A PERSON escorts the men to a table for six.

    MATT

Aren’t you scared of getting lost?

    BRAD

Brad looks at Matt as if the question is absurd. Responds with a French accent.

No way. I am a Army, how do you call it, “brat”. I was raised in “Pareeee”, and we traveled all…

Brad’s voice fades as he continues his dialogue.

    EXT. SIDEWALK – NIGHT

LAURA, 26, blond, South Carolinian, has southern accent, gentle, naïve walks down sidewalk, enters the restaurant.

    INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT

Laura is guided to Brad’s table. Darin stands up and gives Laura a quick hug.

    DARIN

    (Bows with grace)

It’s always so good to see you Laura.

Darin, with flair, pulls out a chair for her next to Matt. Brad stays seated, rolls his eyes, shakes his head, which no one sees.

    DARIN

Laura, this is Matt, he is the brother of one my best friends.

Laura puts her hand on Matt’s arm.

    LAURA

Hi Matt, I’m so glad to meet you. Any brother of my favorite cousin’s best friend is automatically a friend of mine!

Laura looks at Brad. Struggles to say hi.

    LAURA

    Hi Brad, How are you?

    BRAD

    Bien, merci. Happy birthday.

Darin, Matt, and Laura all join in with best wishes.

    LAURA

    Thank y’all so much!

    BRAD

Please don’t anyone start singing. That is so lame.

Laura looks around. Breaks the awkwardness.

    LAURA

Let’s get some drinks goin’ here. ANDREA and JUSTIN should be coming through that door any minute now.

    Darin signals for a waiter.

    LAURA

And let’s get separate checks, but I’ll take care of Andrea.

Matt looks at Darin with fear. Darin signals he will take care of it.

    EXT. SIDEWALK – NIGHT

Andrea, turns 27 today. The dinner is a “twofer” since she and her fiancé, Justin, 30, Italian, determined, comes from wealth, stands on his own, are coming home from a three month cruise as employees. They are in their uniforms. They enter the restaurant.

    INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT

Andrea and Justin hear the “noise” coming from Brad’s table and escort themselves there.

Darin greets Andrea with a hug and shakes Justin’s hand.

    DARIN

Welcome home and happy birthday; a real “twofor” for sure.

General greetings all around. Laura hugs both Andrea and Justin. Matt watches and smiles. Brad remains seated.

Andrea looks at Justin, points to finger and “asks” through looks if she can share. Justin, nods.

    ANDREA

But, actually, tonight is a “threefor”.

She shows everyone her engagement ring.

    BRAD

What in the hell is that? Is that supposed to be an engagement ring?

    Everyone is looking.

    LAURA

Oh, I know what that is. It’s a ring made of those colorful plastic strips you weave together to make key chains and things. I love it!

    DARIN

Oh, yea! I love the colors. Let’s see yellow, orange, violet, and white. Cool.

    ANDREA

Justin got to “play” with the kids on this cruise, and while they were working on theirs, he made this for me, and I absolutely love it.

    JUSTIN

The real jewelry on the ship is bit out of our range right now.

    ANDREA

And you know I love this more than anything else you could’ve given me!

    (To everyone)

AND, No, we haven’t set a date YET. Maybe after our next cruise.

    JUSTIN

That one is gonna be six months.

    ANDREA

And he is gonna be moving on up the ladder. So, ultimately, I will be the captain’s wife.

    JUSTIN

And I will be married to the highest ranking Cruise Ship RN in sailing history!

Andrea and Justin take their seats and general conversation continues silently.

    INT. RESTAURANT – TIME PASSES.

Dinner is done. People have changed seats and are enjoying desert. Andrea is talking with Laura. Justin is getting to know Matt, and Brad and Darin are talking with each other.

    LAURA

Oh, I forgot. I picked up the mail on the way out, and guess what.

    ANDREA

    What? What?

Laura is pulling mail out of her purse.

    LAURA

There were lots of card-sized envelopes in there!

Andrea excitedly shares several cards with Laura and suddenly stops.

    ANDREA

Oh, shit! That son-of-a bitch. I told him never to contact me again. Son-of-a-bitch!

Everyone grows quiet. Matt looks totally confused looking at Darin for a clue. Darin shakes his head “no” to Matt, and mouths, “Later.” Matt nods.

    BRAD

    (Intoxicated)

Gee, that card couldn’t be from your Daddy, could it?

    DARIN

(Leaning in to Brad, quietly begging)

    Let it go, Brad.

    ANDREA

(Glaring at Brad; faking French accent)

“Wee, Wee, my sewer, however did you know?”

    LAURA

    (Getting up quickly)

You know what? I’ve gotta wash my hands and freshin’ up a bit. Come with me Andi.

Laura practically pulls Andrea out of her chair and takes her to the girl’s room.

    INT. LADIE’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS

    LAURA

    (She grabs Andrea’s arm)

What in the hell is the matter with you girl?

    ANDREA

    (Pulling away)

You know how I feel about my father!

    LAURA

I’m not talking about your father. I’m talking about you and Justin.

    ANDREA

The truth? He’s just like my father. For some reason he hates me, and I don’t know why, and I hate his arrogance and his attacks.

    LAURA

Well, just cool it. Okay? We’re here to celebrate for pity sakes.

    ANDREA

What am I supposed to do?

    LAURA

Ignore him! Period, Andi. Now let’s get back to havin’ some fun.

Girls return to the table. It is obvious, Darin is not too happy with Brad and neither is Justin. Matt just watches.

    BRAD

    (Slurring some of his words)

I know I’m gonna be in deep shit, but I’m gonna say it anyway!

Darin turns away, Justin stands up. Laura sits, defeated. Matt stares. Andrea stays standing. Brad stays sitting.

    BRAD

I’m sick and tired of your little self-pity tantrums whenever the topic of your father comes up. What did he do, call you chubby when you were little, slap your little bottom when you were bad?

Andrea sits, takes a sip of her drink, and tries to ignore him.

    BRAD

My daddy bolted when I was three, but you don’t hear me going on and on about what a bastard he was.

    JUSTIN

Brad, I think you’ve made your point. We all have grievances, but some are more traumatic than others.

    BRAD

Oh traumatic, how dramatic. And exactly how much trauma did little miss drama queen experience.

    JUSTIN

    It’s none of your business.

    BRAD

Well, she always makes it our business, doesn’t she.

    ANDREA

Okay. Alright. I’ll tell you what he did. Besides beating me with a razor strop ‘til I had welts from two years old, to belting me across the face so hard I fell off the kitchen chair, telling me I’m no good for anyone or anything, he…

Darin and Laura already know these things, Matt looks at Darin wide-eyed, Justin bows his head, Laura slumps in her seat, Brad just crosses his arms.

Andrea is deciding whether she should reveal the whole truth.

And he – which NOBODY KNOWS, sexually abused me for years. I guess I was good enough for that.

There is a stunned moment. Justin puts his arm around Andrea, Laura jumps up to hug her, Matt looks down at his feet. Darin stares in disbelief, Brad doesn’t move.

I’m soooo sorry my anger, and hurt, and shame put me on edge when I hear his name. That’s it! I’m done here.

Everyone is stunned. Andrea grabs purse, runs out. Laura gets up. Darin goes after Andrea. Justin signals both to sit, he runs after her. Brad takes another drink. Matt just watches.

    DARIN

I’m done, too. Come on Brad, I’m driving.

They exit. Laura moves next to Matt.

    LAURA

I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to know you better tonight, Matt.

Laura reaches for her purse, which causes her to look away from Matt.

    MATT

Cops killed my brother right in front of me; they thought he was some other guy.

Laura puts her purse down. Looks compassionately at Matt. Stands up. Motions Matt to stand up. Matt gets up. Laura holds Matt in her arms a long time.

    LAURA

    I’ll take you home.

    EXT. SIDEWALK – CONTINUOUS

Darin is walking Brad to the car. They get in, but Darin does not start the car.

    BRAD

    Are we home yet?

    DARIN

Is that intended to be funny?

    BRAD

    No.

    DARIN

    No. We aren’t home yet.

    BRAD

    Where are we?

    Darin starts the car.

    DARIN

    (Almost to himself)

That’s a very good question, Brad.

    EXT. PARKING LOT – CONTINUOUS

Justin catches up with Andrea. They stand outside the passenger’s side of Justin’s car.

    ANDREA

    Why does he hate me?

    JUSTIN

Come back to my place tonight.

    ANDREA

Honestly, I’ve never done anything to him.

    JUSTIN

I don’t want you to be alone tonight.

    ANDREA

It’s okay, Justin. I’m just tired and want to sleep in my own bed, and besides Laura will be there if I need anything. Please don’t take this personally, Justin.

Justin starts to say more, realizes it is futile.

    JUSTIN

    Okay.

INT. ANDREA’S LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Laura has gotten home first. Andrea enters quietly. Laura is sitting on the couch with a glass of wine and one for Andrea. She puts her wine down, and rushes to the door as she hears Andrea entering.

    LAURA

Oh, my God, Andrea, I’m so sorry about tonight. How are you?

They hug and head to the couch.

    ANDREA

    Drained.

Laura chooses not to push. She sits back and lets Andrea speak if she wants to.

    ANDREA

    Thank you for staying up.

    LAURA

    Who could sleep after tonight?

    ANDREA

    (laughing)

    I can!

Andrea takes one more sip of wine, and heads to her bedroom.

    LAURA

My nurturing genes are working over-time and I insist on tucking you in.

    Laura follows Andrea.

    ANDREA

And, oh my god, Andi, I have to tell you what Matt said after all of you were gone.

    INT. JUSTIN’S BEDROOM – MORNING

Andrea and Justin are getting dressed and packing for a weekend in the mountains. When they’re finished, they have fun making the bed and throwing pillows at each other. They then flop on the bed and kiss passionately, and then, Justin counts to three and they race to get up, grab their things and head out the door.

    ANDREA

How far from the ocean will we be?

    JUSTIN

_______ (research this) with fresh mountain air and birds and flowers, and squirls, and…

    ANDREA

And bears, and snakes, and bugs, oh my!

    INT. JUSTIN’S CAR – MORNING

It is a gorgeous day, windows down, music on, they both love Musicals to sing with. Sound of Music/The Hills are Alive is playing and they are singing. Andrea can harmonize well. As they are singing “I must have done something good” to each other…

    SOUND FADES – Time passes

    INT. JUSTIN’S CAR – AFTERNOON

How about Jesus Christ Super Star? That always gets us movin’ and agrovin’. But, before the selection is made.

    ANDREA

I still haven’t been able to track Darin down to find out more about Matt’s brother.

    JUSTIN

Did you text him about our camping trip?

    ANDREA

Yeh, and he never returned the text. That is VERY unusual.

    ANDREA

    I’ll text him now.

Andrea looks at her phone, throws it on the floor, pounds the dashboard, and muffles her desperate scream . Justin knows what happened. There is nothing he can say, but he is not happy that their fun trip is being ruined, and it shows.

    EXT. CABIN – LATER

They are both quiet as they move things into the cabin.

    INT. CABIN – CONTINUOUS

    JUSTIN

    (Matter-of-factly)

I’m going to the store to get supplies, is there anything in particular you want or need?

    ANDREA

Andrea goes over to Justin and hugs him. He hugs back.

    ANDREA

I’m sorry Justin. I truly am, and I promise not to ruin the weekend.

    JUSTIN

Let’s talk when I get back.

Justin leaves. Andrea, paces, shakes her head, obviously upset with herself. She decides to call, Darin one more time; she needs him. Darin answers.

    ANDREA

Oh, thank God, Darin. Where have you been? Are you alright.

    INT. CABIN – CONTINUOUS

Time has passed. Andrea is calm and laughing. Justin enters with bags, heads for kitchen.

    ANDREA

Oh, Darin, my captain of captains has just arrived with lots of goodies. I’ll see you when we get back.

Justin is in the kitchen unpacking.

    JUSTIN OS

I’m glad you finally reached Darin. How is he? Where in the blazes has he been?

Andrea joins Justin in the kitchen and helps put things in the fridge.

    INT. KITCHEN – LATE AFTERNOON

They are busy fixing sandwiches. Andrea fixes Justin’s and Justin fixes Andreas.

    ANDREA

He went on a retreat! He hasn’t done that in – oh, three years at least.

    JUSTIN

    Did he say why?

    ANDREA

He skirted it, but I think he is having trouble with Brad’s drinking.

    JUSTIN

    I get that!

    ANDREA

And I think he is worried about Brad being in Paris for three weeks.

    JUSTIN

I thought he had forgiven Brad for the affair.

    ANDREA

He has, but he is still struggling with trust issues.

They give each other a hug, exchange sandwiches, drinks (sodas) and a kiss and a genuine loving “thank you” and head to the living room.

Andrea sits grabs the lounge chair. Justin sits on the couch. As they eat…

    JUSTIN

Did Darin know about Brad’s drinking before they got married?

    ANDREA

I asked him the same thing when I caught on to the problem. He said Brad hid the size of it very well.

    JUSTIN

I’m in somewhat of a similar situation.

    ANDREA

What do you mean honey? I don’t drink.

    JUSTIN

    No, but…

    ANDREA

Oh my God. Ohhhh my God! Oh, is it really…? Oh my God, Justin. I’m sooo sorry. I will never do it again, I promise.

    JUSTIN

I honestly don’t think you can say that, Andi. It’s such an instant visceral and violent reaction, I don’t think you can control it, and I’m worried about you!

    ANDREA

    You knew about…

    JUSTIN

No, I didn’t. You told me about your dad through an EMAIL! That message seemed controlled on my end, but I have no idea what you were going through while your were writing it.

    ANDREA

    Oh my God.

    JUSTIN

You also told me you had “beu cue,” unending, drive-you-crazier, YOUR words, counselor after counselor. So what do you think I knew?

    Andrea has stopped eating.

    JUSTIN

And you never, ever told me all that he had done to you, and I’m devastated that I haven’t made you feel safe enough to share your most frightening nightmares with me.

Andrea gets up and goes to Justin on the couch and hugs him.

    JUSTIN

And I had no idea how to handle the other night at dinner, but I do know that we have to find a solution to your hatred, and I will everything I can to help.

    ANDREA

I don’t know how to fix the rage, but Darin thinks he knows.

    JUSTIN

    What?

    ANDREA

He was desperate to find a way to deal with Brad’s affair. And one day in the park he met this really odd character; in fact, we call him OC for odd character, since he won’t tell anyone his name.

    JUSTIN

Is he a criminal? Why doesn’t he tell anybody his name? Is he hiding something? Is he dangerous?

    ANDREA

Darin doesn’t think so; the guy’s just… odd. Anyway, Darin said he was a tremendous help to him, and maybe he could help me.

    JUSTIN

What did he do – give him drugs? Kidnap him and put him under some kind of hypnotic spell?

    ANDREA

    I don’t know.

    JUSTIN

You don’t know? Why didn’t Darin tell you?

    ANDREA

Because the OC made him promise not to tell anyone. If someone needs help, they need to go to him without any preconceived ideas.

    JUSTIN

Well, I want to meet ol’ OC if you decide to check him out. Okay?

    ANDREA

I do want to get a crip on my anger, Justin.

    PHONE RINGS:

Andrea gets up to answer her phone which she left in the kitchen

    JUSTIN

(loud to Andrea as she leaves the room)

    Good.

    JUSTIN

    (to himself)

It really is important to me and for us.

EXT. JUSTIN’S CAR – NEXT MORNING

Justin is loading up the car.

    ANDREA

    Justin please, please.

    JUSTIN

I’m really sorry, Andrea, but I need time to think about all of this, and you need time to figure out how you are going to handle it.

    ANDREA

    I know, I know.

    JUSTIN

I’m not sure you do. Your dad has someone call you on his behave, and you go crazy again. Honey, I don’t know how to handle it. It never happened before now. Why?

    ANDREA

Because I left and never let him know where I was or how to contact me.

    JUSTIN

Well how did he find you.

    ANDREA

One of his friends was on the cruise with us. I never saw him, but he saw me; I was in the middle of an emergency on deck, and he didn’t want to interrupt. Apparently, he never tried to find me, but he told dad.

    JUSTIN

Whatever. Do you have all your stuff? Just leave the food. The next person will get a nice surprise.

    ANDREA

    Justin…

    JUSTIN

Andrea…I need to leave, and I’m not going without you.

Andrea goes in to get the rest of her things.

    INT. ANDREA’S KITCHEN – MORNING – A WEEK LATER

Andrea and Laura are fixing breakfast. Laura has grits, Andrea has bacon and eggs. It is a beautifully choreographed dance they have done for several years. They can chat, too.

    ANDREA

Well, Laura, I woke up this morning angrier than…than…

    LAURA

    (A ——– research a southern saying)

    Why?

    ANDREA

He’s manipulating me. It just dawned on me. He’s controlling me.

    LAURA

    Well…

    ANDREA

All of a sudden I have some kind of wart he doesn’t want to look at, and he wants to “take a break” until I get the wart removed?

    LAURA

    Well…

    ANDREA

I didn’t ask him to get rid of any of his warts.

    LAURA

    Does he have warts?

    ANDREA

I don’t know yet, but I’m sure he has some. Doesn’t everybody?

    LAURA

    Well…

    ANDREA

Well, I woke up this morning really, really furious, and then I came up with a plan.

    LAURA

    A plan?

    ANDREA

Okay, a “scheme.” I’m going to write a beautiful conciliatory email?

    LAURA

    To Justin?

    ANDREA

    No. To my father.

    LAURA

    Really?

    ANDREA

Yep, and I will convince Justin that I sent it and that my father got back with me, and we plan to get together.

    LAURA

You know I’m not dumb, but I’m confused. Do mean for real or not?

    ANDREA

No, Laura. It wouldn’t be a “scheme” if it were real? Right?

    LAURA

I’m sorry Andrea, but I’ve never seen you like this, and I’m worried.

They move to the kitchen table to eat.

    ANDREA

What’s good for the goose…I have no desire what-so-ever to resolve things with my father, and nobody has the right to tell me what I have to do or not do!

    LAURA

    True, but…

    ANDREA

It’s okay, Laura. Don’t worry about it, and obviously this is just between us, but I won’t bother you with it any more.

    LAURA

It’s not a bother, Andi. I’m just suddenly talkin’ with somebody I never met before, and I miss Andrea.

    They eat in silence.

    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM MID-MORNING

Andrea is at her computer composing an email.

    ANDREA

    Dear Dad…

    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS

    Andrea is on her phone.

    ANDREA

Justin, I’ve made some progress, and I want to share it with you. Please call me. Love you.

Andrea hangs up, reads her email again and smiles.

PHONE RINGS (REMEMBER TO PICK A RING TONE FOR EACH CHARACTER)

    ANDREA

Hi Justin. oh my, it’s so good to hear your voice. I’ve missed you.

    JUSTIN

    Hi Andi. Are you okay?

    ANDREA

I am now. I want to read something to you.

    JUSTIN

    Okay.

Justin is in his living room, studying one of the manuals he needs to read to become a cruise ship captain. He listens intensely as Andrea is apparently reading the email she wrote to her father.

    JUSTIN

I love the opening! It is warm.

    JUSTIN

I’m not sure I would phrase it that way. Let’s see…

Voice fades. Time passes. Voices return when Andrea finishes reading her email to Justin.

    ANDREA

    Well, what do you think?

    JUSTIN

My first question is, how do YOU feel about the email?

    ANDREA

Honestly, I’m not sure. I don’t know if I want really want to get together with him, but I don’t want to lose you, Justin.

    JUSTIN

I don’t want to lose you either, Andi. Well, I’m very happy for you and for us that you are trying. I’m looking forward to the next step.

    ANDREA

So, do you want to hit a movie tonight?

    JUSTIN

Oh, honey, I’m sorry, but I have other plans.

    Silence on the other end.

    JUSTIN

No. No. Don’t worry; I’m not seeing someone else. Not everyone is like Brad. Not nice, I know.

    They laugh and hang up.

    LAURA

    Did he like the letter?

    JUSTIN

He had a few suggestions, but was very happy about my progress.

    LAURA

Are really not going to send it?

    ANDREA

    Watch me.

    Andrea deletes the email.

    LAURA

I’m sorry. I think that letter was a really good idea and a great step toward healing, Andi.

    ANDREA

Well, I will be healed when I get Justin back, and manage to maintain my cool whenever my father tries to contact me. I can do this!

    INT. RESTAURANT – AFTERNOON

Andrea is sitting in a booth alone, with a salad and soda. Andrea goes through some deep breathing, then makes a phone call.

    ANDREA

Justin, oh good! I’m so glad I gotcha. I’m having lunch at our favorite place, and I would love for you to join me.

    JUSTIN

    Have heard from your dad?

    ANDREA

YES! I can’t believe it. He is coming for dinner this Friday. Why don’t you come over and celebrate with me. Are you free?

    JUSTIN

Oh, Andi, that is wonderful news. Honestly, how are you dealing with it?

    ANDREA

Honestly? Sometimes I want to strangle you, and sometimes I want to jump up and down together, and sometimes, well anyway, I can’t put my finger on just one reaction.

    JUSTIN

    Well, I am really happy.

    ANDREA

So, can you join me for lunch?

    JUSTIN

It’s tempting, but I am studying for a test I will be taking on line tomorrow, and I want to ace it.

    ANDREA

    But…

    Andrea stops herself.

    ANDREA

Well, I’m disappointed of course, but I really do understand. Anyway, I will keep you updated. Love you.

    JUSTIN

Okay, Andi. Chat later. Wait! Hey! Darin, Brad, Matt, and I are going to the movies tomorrow night so I can gel after taking the exam. Would you like to come.

Andrea signals a silent arm pump and YES.

    ANDREA

It depends on what you’re going to see?

    JUSTIN

Nope. I ain’t tellin’. Either you want to be with us or not! Bring Laura if she would like to come.

    ANDREA

    What time?

Andrea dances into the living room. Laura is reading a book to see if her students would like it.

    ANDREA

(She says Laura, like —- said Judy, Judy, Judy.)

    Laura, Laura, Laura

Would you like to go to the movies tomorrow night?

    LAURA

    What’s playin’?

    ANDREA

I don’t know, but Darin, Matt, Brad, and – guess who are going.

    LAURA

Let me see… could it be Justin?

    ANDRE

You are so smart! Are you game?

    LAURA

Wouldn’t miss it. But I’m not sure I’m on your side.

INT. MOVIE THEATRE LOBBY – NIGHT

Matt and Laura are in the food line together. Darin and Justin are waiting for Matt and Laura.

    MATT

I want to thank you for being so kind to me at the dinner.

    LAURA

    How are you doing?

    MATT

Uh, actually, I haven’t told anybody yet, but I just graduated today.

    LAURA

You did? That’s wonderful. Congratulations! What is your degree in?

    MATT

Oh, not college. I am now EMT certified.

Andrea enters the lobby and looks around.

    LAURA

Super! You are now a vital part of the health industry. When do you get assigned?

    MATT

    Monday.

Justin sees Andrea and calls her over. She hugs Justin and Darin. Andrea looks around.

    ANDREA

    Where’s everybody else?

    DARIN

    Laura and Matt getting goodies.

    ANDREA

    Where’s Brad

    DARIN

    He decided not to come.

    ANDREA

    Hmmm. I won’t ask.

    DARIN

Don’t worry; I’m sure he will find some other friends at Bill’s bar.

    ANDREA

    Here come the goodies.

    JUSTIN

You didn’t get a chance to put in your order. Do you want me…

    ANDREA

Laura always knows what I want.

INT. MOVIE THEATER LOBBY – NIGHT

The gang is coming out from the movie and are talking about it in the lobby.

PLACEHOLDER: Need to pick the movie? Need a scene with each character reflecting who they are?

    ANDREA

Oh my God. I forgot to tell you all! Justin and Laura know that I sent an email to my father!

    DARIN

Andi, that’s wonderful. How did you ever decide to do that?

    ANDREA

Andrea glances at Justin. Laura walks away, finishes her drink, throws the cup in the trash, and stays there longer than needed.

    ANDREA

    (Awkwardly)

Never mind that, I want to tell you what happened next!

    JUSTIN

    Did contact you?

    ANDREA

YES! He called and could hardly talk he was crying so hard. He kept saying he was sorry, and he now realizes what he did was wrong.

    JUSTIN

He just now realizes what he did was wrong? What an idiot.

    ANDREA

Well, we are going out to dinner tomorrow night, and he can explain everything then.

    Laura returns to the group.

    DARIN

My God Andi, that is really…You seem excited…but I don’t know how you could…well, anyway, I am thrilled for you.

    JUSTIN

There are no words, Andrea. Except, let’s go to my place and celebrate!

    DARIN

Well, aren’t you going to invite the rest of us?

Laughs all around. Laura looks at Andrea with disbelief.

    LAURA

(With deliberate awareness that this was all part of the scheme, and it is going Andrea’s way.)

I’m just so glad we came in my car. I’m goin’ to say good-night all. Luv ya.

    MATT

Laura, would you mind taking me home. I took the bus here.

    LAURA

Of course, I would be happy to, Matt.

    INT. JUSTIN’S BEDROOM – CONTINUOUS

It’s obvious they have had sex. Justin comes out of the bathroom in his underwear and sees Andrea getting dressed.

    JUSTIN

What are doing, Andi? Aren’t you staying the night? What’s going on?

    ANDREA

    Something’s not right, Justin.

    JUSTIN

What are you talking about? This is nothing but just right. I’ve been literally praying for this night.

    Justin hops back into bed.

I love it when prayers are answered. Come on in, the water’s just right.

    ANDREA

    I can’t.

    JUSTIN

Sits up. Okay, I’m a little slow on the uptake here. Something isn’t right, but I don’t know what or why?

    ANDREA

    It’s hard to explain.

    JUSTIN

I gather that. Is it me? Has being away from me given you second thoughts. You can be honest with me Andi.

    ANDREA

I know. I know. You always say, It is the truth that sets us free. That’s a major part of the problem.

    JUSTIN

Do you think I’m not being honest right now? Do you think I’m pretending to be happy to feel you in my arms again.

    ANDREA

    No! No! No!

Justin waits. There is nothing more he can ask or do. Andrea brushes her hair in the mirror.

    ANDREA

    I can’t do it.

Justin roles over and sits on the edge of the bed near her.

    JUSTIN

I’m listening, Andrea. What can’t you do?

Andrea slams her brush into her purse clutches her purse. Stops. Looks at Justin deciding whether to really be honest or not.

    ANDREA

    I lied.

    JUSTIN

You lied. About what and why?

    ANDREA

The why is because I love you.

Justin is beginning to catch on, but doesn’t want to believe what it is he thinking.

    JUSTIN

That makes no sense. If you love me, you won’t lie to me. You will trust that I will listen and work with you to solve any problem.

    ANDREA

See but you didn’t work with me. You abandond me! You manipulated me. You made me work on the worst thing in my life on my own.

    JUSTIN

I did what I thought was best. And it worked. Didn’t it?

    Andrea is silent.

    JUSTIN

    (Standing up in her face.)

    Well, didn’t it work, Andrea!

Andrea walks away from him actually frightened by his intensity. She turns back to him.

    ANDREA

No Justin, it didn’t work! I did not send that email to my father, and I never intended to. I made up everything about the phone call, and …

    JUSTIN

You made up all of this success you had with your father? And you have convinced yourself that you did that because you love me?

Justin walks over to Andrea, looks her in the eye. She starts backing out of the bedroom. He stays right with her.

    JUSTIN

Get out! GET OUT AND STAY OUT OF MY LIFE! NO TEXTS, NO EMAILS. NO PHONE CALLS, NO FRIENDS TRYING TO FIX THINGS UP. I COULD NEVER TRUST YOU AGAIN.

Justin turns his back on her, goes into the bedroom and slams the door. Andrea, just stands there.

    ANDREA

The truth does not set you free.

    Act One Turning Point

What I learned from this assignment: Actually what I just realized is that I believe I am way far behind! What I have written is the first scene, not the first Act. I have a lot of work to do! I did enjoy creating the characters and the tension. I did not want to start the scene with everyone already in the restaurant; that would lead to too much dialogue, so that will help me in the future to bring characters in slowly.

    ANDREA

Okay. I’ll tell you what he did. Besides beating me with a razor strop ‘til I had welts from two, belting me across the face so hard I fell off the kitchen chair, telling me I’m no good for anyone or anything and…

Laura and Darin know these events; no one else does.

Andrea pauses to decide if she can reveal the worst part.

    ANDREA

And he, which NOBODY KNOWS, sexually abused me for years. I guess I was good enough for that.

Justin stands up. Laura slumps in disbelief. Brad doesn’t move. Matt is embarrassed. Darin is in shock.

I’m soooooo sorry my anger, and hurt, and shame, put me on edge whenever I hear his name. I’m done here.

Andrea grabs purse, runs out. Laura gets up. Darin goes after Andrea. Justin signals both to sit, he runs after her. Brad takes another drink. Matt just watches.

    DARIN

I’m done. Come on Brad, I’m driving.

They exit. Laura moves next to Matt, puts her hand on Matt’s arm.

    LAURA

Well Matt, I’m so sorry I didn’t get a chance to know you better tonight.

As Laura reaches for her purse, she is turned away from Matt.

    MATT

    (Pause. Looking down)

Cops killed my brother right in front of me. They thought he was some other guy.

Laura stares at Matt. Gets up. Matt gets up. Laura holds Matt a long time.

    LAURA

    I’ll take you home.

    I forgot to write

What I learned from this assignment: pragmatically speaking, I learned how to copy and past the Final Draft version of what I created. Though it is a tedious process, unless someone can tell me how to copy the whole scene instead of just a paragraph at a time. Anyway, what I found exciting is how easy it was to go from the outline we created to the actual writing of the scene. I followed the outline almost exactly. I now have the tools I need to move one to lesson 11.

    FADE IN:

    ANDREA

It is 8.5 pages. I would hate to have to create this in word from the start. Help.

    <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Opening & Character Introductions Outlines

<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>What I learned by doing this lesson: first, I may have misunderstood the lesson. Here is the outline. Now, my understanding is we to write the actual scene. Here is my problem with speed writing. To write the scene, I need to format it properly, have the slugs, the dialogue, and descriptions, etc. I am working with Final Draft, and I am learning it as I go, which slows me down considerably, though I am getting better. I am struggling with the “I’ll think about it tomorrow” concept. I have signed for the class tonight on speed writing. I have written all of the scenes below, but I don’t know how to submit the Final Draft version. Any suggestions?

    Act 1

    SCENE 1 INT.RESTAURANT NIGHT

Beginning: “The boys” walk down the sidewalk. Brad is dominating the conversation, but others are interested. Enter restaurant. Get seated.

Middle: Laura comes from another direction. Enters restaurant. Is directed to “the boys”.

End: Everyone anxiously waiting for Justin and Andrea. Birthday and homecoming from cruise.

Scene 2 CONTINUED (Introduction to antagonist: need to forgive)

Beginning: Justin and Andrea join the group still in their work clothes.

Middle: It’s a double dipper – birthday and homecoming from cruise. Andrea brings up birthday card from her dad. Tension shortly begins between Andrea and Brad.

End: Andrea directs Laura to the girl’s room. Andrea reveals how much Brad reminds her of her father.

    Scene 3 CONTINUED

Beginning: Girls return to table. They are quiet. Andrea is still steaming.

Middle: Justin comes to her rescue by talking about the cruise.

End: Brad brings it back to forgiving. Darin asks him to stop. There is tension there.

    Scene 4 CONTINUED (TE)

Beginning: Others bring up the people they need to forgive, too – to calm the conversation down.

Middle: – Brad antagonizes Andrea again.

End: Andrea explodes and exits. Laura starts to follow her; Justin stops Laura and goes after Andrea himself. After Andrea and Justin leave, Laura tries to carry on by asking Matt some questions about himself. Darin is not happy with Brad! They decide to leave. Laura and Matt are left alone.

Jeanne Sanner’s Beat Sheet Draft 2

What I learned by doing this lesson is: I believe I have already done this throughout my screenplay thus far. I began with my theme, and I am writing the play to explore the theme. The theme: Is forgiveness, even of parental sexual abuse, possible, and if so, how?

The main character, Andrea, has the biggest hurdle, though Darin has achieved forgiveness of his husband for having an affair, and Laura is working to forgive her mother for cremating Laura’s father without consulting Laura, to which Laura would have argued vehemently against.

Actually, Andrea’s lack of ability to forgive her father is the real antagonist. Her father is the impetus, but Andrea is battling with the idea of having to forgive her father when she doesn’t really want to, doesn’t think he deserves it, and doesn’t know how.

What I have gained from this assignment though, is that I need to create a better opening to introduce the characters.

The Opening I am now considering is: Andrea and Justin’s ship comes in and Darin and Laura are at the dock to welcome them home. Lots of energy; we see the strength of Andrea’s and Justin’s relationship, their professional goals, and we get to know the friends, too.

Up to now, I have gotten into the theme too quickly. I will make the current opening my second scene, and the introduction of the theme then happens in the third scene.

Also, I now realize why I was not as successful with speed writing in the last assignment: I was combining that assignment with this one. I will keep speed writing in mind with future assignments if it is appropriate.

I realize that I must be careful not make my theme an infomercial, and my script has the potential to do that. It also has the potential to be preachy. I am cognizant of those pitfalls and will do all I can not to fall into them.

Jeanne Sanner’s Beat Sheet and High-Speed Writing

What I learned from this lesson is: I have learned that I am not very good at High-Speed Writing. I do commit to keep trying. I visualize each scene, so I put the slug in first in each case. Wrong procedure, but since I know where and when, I just start with that. I also had to go back and take out things that were not necessary for this lesson. I will get better at that as I go along. I found myself adding scenes, and I like what I added. In some cases, I have added more than what is called for, but I want to be sure to remember those ideas.

    EXT. PARK – MID-MORNING

OPENING: ANDREA and LAURA are jogging. Andrea notices OC (Odd Character) on bench. Laura does not notice. They leave to get things done before Andrea’s birthday dinner tonight which includes Justin, Laura, and Darin.

TE: Justin is packing. Andrea is confused. Justin has decided the relationship is over.

    INT. CAR – SAME MORNING

TE: Justin explains why he fell in love with her, and why it has gone downhill. No argument. She says why she fell in love with him and asks if there is anything she can do to fix this situation. He says she has to genuinely forgive her father. She tries other ways – what if I just stop talking about him, etc. He says there is only one solution. She agrees to try, but still believes it is impossible.

INT. ANDREA AND LAURA’S KITCHEN – NOON

TE: Andrea now sees Justin as being very manipulative. Explains to Laura that she will find a way to convince Justin that she has forgiven her father. Laura questions whether it is good to deceive Justin. Andrea justifies her position.

    INT. ANDREA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

TE: Andrea writes an email to her father, saying she is sorry, and that she would like to talk things out. She calls Justin and reads the letter to him. Justin congratulates Andrea. Andrea deletes the email. Laura sees what she did.

EXT. MOTHER’S GRAVE SITE – MORNING

TE: Andrea tells her mother everything. Darin comes up behind her and tells her what her mother would say. Laura had told Darin what happened. He arrived just as Andrea was pulling away and followed her. Andrea still confesses she can’t believe it is possible, but she will try again. Darin reveals something OC said in an attempt to encourage her.

INT. SHIP – MORNING – ONE WEEK LATER

TE: Andrea is getting ready to ship out again in a month. She finds out Justin has transferred to a different cruise ship. Andrea had hoped that cruising together might bring him back, but that dream is now lost.

EXT. PARK – MORNING – NEXT DAY – WEDNESDAY

TE: Andrea and Laura are jogging. Laura tells Andrea that OC is not there today. Laura reveals she has been going to OC to learn how to forgive her mother, and that all is well with their relationship now. Andrea is shocked. (Does he talk? Yes, but you have to earn his trust first.)

EXT. OC’S PARK BENCH – MORNING

TE: PLACEHOLDER for meetings with OC. They have a real conversation before Andrea sails. She returns in three months since she is scheduled for several cruises leaving from different ports. OC clarifies what she heard from the psychologist, minister, guru, and mystic.

    MONTAGE

TE: Andrea keeps a journal, prays in the chapel, and does other tasks OC assigned. The montage demonstrates Andrea’s true caring, friendly, and professional personality. There is one moment when she is inappropriately touched by a male passenger. She reacts in the old way; then applies a new away. She is laughing again.

INT. ANDREA’S CABIN BALCONY – SUNSET

    INT. ANDREA’S AND LAURA’S LIVINGROOM – CONTINUED

TE: Laura is genuinely happy for Andrea. Doorbell rings. Laura answers. It’s Justin. Laura goes to OC’s. Justin has been betrayed by his new girlfriend. Andrea understands, and indicates she knows someone who can help him forgive her, and once he does, she will welcome him back.

I am enjoying the work, but I miss reading what others are doing since I am really, really new at this, and I was hoping to get feedback.

I will complete the course regardless, but is it possible to get feedback from you or Hal every now and then?

    Screen Lesson 6

    Transformational Events

What I learned from doing this assignment: I became aware of how important it is to have incremental steps to the transformation, and to have specific actions to demonstrate the change.

    Old ways –

    1. estranged daughter

    2. believes forgiving is impossible

    3. rejects advice

    4. dependent on fiance’s love

    5. insecure

    New ways

    1. good relationship with father

    2. the path to freedom is possible

    3. takes advice

    4. is a more caring daughter

    5. is more independent of fiance’s love

    6. more secure in herself and her relationships

    List of Changes

    1. after several attempts to “fool” Justin to believe she has healed her relationship with her father, she comes clean. Justin ends the relationship.

    2. Andrea then takes it seriously and knows she must changed but doesn’t know how

    3. Darin, her cousin, tells her about OC.

    4. She visits OC with Laura, and finds him ridiculous.

    5. Laura reveals that she has been seeing OC, and he helped her forgive her mother for cremating her father. Laura finds out more about OC, but she does not tell anyone.

    Andrea is resentful.

    6. There is a montage of her going to various resources: psychologist, minister, guru, mystic, etc. none of them work, but she begins to see a pattern that forgiveness requires a compassionate response, but she still can’t get there.

    7. She talks to Darin again, he reveals one important secret, which she finds ridiculous: that she must forgive herself.

    8. She goes back to OC and confronts him. If he really wants to help, it’s time he has a real conversation. Forgiving isn’t something we can do; forgiveness is the result of what we stop doing. Message of movie.

    9. She discovers the truth, and the steps that might help her reach her goal.

    10. It will take a year before she actually reaches her goal – in the meantime, Justin has found someone else, Laura and OC are dating, but then Justin’s new girl leaves him; he must forgive her for her deceit; he goes back to Andrea and it ends with them seeing each other again.

    4 Act Transformational Structure – Lesson 5

What I learned from doing this assignment is: How powerful it is to break down the challenge into smaller steps and increments. It supports the suspense and keeps the audience intrigued. I love how this is coming together.

    PROTAGONIST

    1. Give us the following:

Concept: After being told by her fiancé, Justin, that he is thinking of calling the engagement off unless Andrea genuinely forgives her father, Andrea insincerely attempts to satisfy his wishes, but she fails to convince him.

Main Conflict: Andrea does not want to forgive her father since she does not believe he deserves to be forgiven, but she wants to save her relationship with Justin.

Old Ways: Staying estranged- not communicating.

New Ways: Tries constructing an email; tries phoning and leaving a message; invites her father over for dinner, but she includes five other people and basically ignores her dad. Finally learns how to forgive and to experience the freedom forgiveness creates.

    2. Fill in each of these with the answers you have right now.

    Act 1

Opening: Andrea and her roommate Laura are riding bikes on a path and pass Odd Character (OC) sitting on a bench handing someone a red card. They notice they had seen him a few times, but they pay no more attention to him. Then Andrea and Laura get ready to go out to dinner with Justin to celebrate Andrea’s 27th birthday. Darin, Andrea’s cousin, whom Andrea hopes will hook up with Laura joins them for the birthday celebration. At dinner, Andrea starts talking about her father, whom she hates. Everyone gets quiet – they have been here before. Justin becomes distant. Darin tries to introduce the Odd Character (Change Agent) and how he helped Darin, but Andrea politely dismisses the conversation – Forgiving is impossible.

Inciting incident: (Weeks later) Andrea and Justin are on their way to a weekend together, Andrea starts in again about her father and how much she hates him, and that he keeps finding ways to make contact, which she keeps ignoring.

Turning Point: During the weekend, Justin tells Andrea that he is calling off the engagement. He finally reveals that she either has to genuinely forgive her father or their relationship is over.

    Act 2

New Plan: After some time staying distant from Justin, in spite of his attempts to contact her, she decides that she can convince Justin that she has indeed forgiven her father even though she has not. Talks with cousin, Darin. Meets the Odd Character and decides he does not have the answer, and he is just playing games.

Plan in action: Show Justin an email that she plans to send her dad. He likes it; she does not send it. Tells Justin she phoned her dad, but she did at a time he was not going to answer and hung up.

Justin discovers the deceit and decides their relationship is over. He can’t trust her.

Midpoint Turning point: Andrea realizes that this is indeed very important to Justin and he means what he says.

    Act 3

Rethink everything: Andrea begins to really explore how to forgive, but she doubts it is possible.

New Plan: Montage of visiting a psychologist, a minister, a guru, a mystic, etc.

Turning Point: huge failure/turning point: Nothing works. Andrea discovers that the OC has helped Laura to genuinely forgive her mother. Laura can’t tell Andrea how to do it. Andrea heads back to OC.

    Act 4

Climax/ultimate expression of the conflict: Andrea goes back to OC.

Resolution: demonstrates true forgiveness and gets back together with Justin.

    Character Interviews – Lesson 4

What I learned from doing this lesson: I have developed a much more intimate relationship with my key characters. I have compassion for both. This information is causing me to re-think how much backstory I need to incorporate into the script so the audience will have compassion for both as well. Moving from exposition to demonstration!

    PROTAGONIST

    1. Tell me about yourself? 27 years old, attractive in other’s opinions, well educated, working on Masters in nursing. I am deeply in love with my fiance. I love my job of being a nurse on a cruise ship (that is where I met my fiancé). I have a good life by normal standards, but deeply, I am upset because I cannot get over the scars my dad created. I need to do get beyond that to live a truly happy life. I like to fight against injustice since I feel I am a victim.

    2. Why do you think you were called to this journey? Why you? Because my inner conflict goes deep; because I am in a loving relationship with someone who really cares about me, himself, and us; if he didn’t, he would not have placed me in the position I’m in.

    3. You are up against…What is it about them that makes this journey even more difficult for you? Losing the love of my life. Having to forgive my father when it goes against my ego. Needing to forgive my father to “save my soul”/peace/joy/spiritual truth.

    4. In order to survive or accomplish this, you are going to have to step way outside of your box. What changes do you expect to make and which of them will be the most difficult. One big change: forgive my father. I don’t know how, and I don’t want to.

    5. What habits or ways of thinking do you think will be the most difficult to let go of? I have to stop condemning my father; I have to come to love him; I have to be grateful for his being my dad all of which require a major change in my perceptions and beliefs.

    6. What fears, insecurities and wounds have held you back? All the fears, insecurities and wounds my dad created. Not thinking I am good or good enough. Thinking I am a sex object and not safe around my father, wanting to commit suicide.

    7. What skills, backgrounds or expertise makes you well suited to face this conflict or antagonist? My spiritual foundation. I am strong in many ways. I am capable of facing the truth though I don’t live it the way I could.

    8. What are you hiding from the other characters? What don’t you want them to know? My attempted suicide; the depth of my hatred; my resentment for the one I love for putting me in the position he did.

    9. What do you think of…?

    10. Tell me your side of this whole conflict/story. I have been going along convincing myself that I am happy, when in truth I am not. I resent my fiancé, and yet recognize that he is right. I wish I had a different father, but it is what it is.

    11. What does it do for your life if you succeed here? I will find true peace, which will make my relationship with everyone much better, more loving, and experience real emotional freedom!

    12. Ask any other questions about their character profile that will help you.

    ANTAGONIST/CHANGE AGENT

    1. Tell me about yourself. I am healed from a tragic choice I made. I am 30. Most people find me good looking. I have a masters degree in philosophy, and I work as a private tutor for college students, which I find very rewarding. I create my own schedule, and I get to tutor many different subjects from math to religious studies to science to creative writing. My students are very appreciative of my academic skills and my style of teaching, and I also get to guide young people with life issues and problems.

    2. Having to do with this journey, what are your strengths and weaknesses? Strengths, see above. Weaknesses: afraid to love again – keep my distance from romance. My loneliness hinders me from getting out bed some days. I still have short bouts of guilt, but than can also drive me.

    3. Why are you committed to making the protagonist fail? Or for a relationship movie, why are you committed to making them change? I know from personal experience how much condemnation and lack of forgiveness can contaminate a person’s life. I don’t want anyone to go through that.

    4. What do you get out of winning this fight/succeeding in your plan/taking down your competition? It is a form of vindication – a way to continually forgive myself. A way to give what I have to give – there is tremendous joy and peace in giving.

    5. What drives you toward your mission/agenda, even in the face of danger, ruin, or death? Peace

    6. What secrets must you keep to succeed? What other secrets do you keep out of fear/insecurity? I need to protect myself from condemnation for the mistake I made. I need to teach without revealing who I once was. I do not like to have others see how my selfishness had a lasting effect on another person.

    7. Compared to other people like you, what makes you special? My desire to be a better person by teaching others to avoid the kind of mistake I made. I do not shove what I did under the rug and go on with life like it didn’t happen.

    8. What do you think of…?

    9. Tell me your side of this conflict/story. I was in love with a woman, and I felt like I was ready for the next step. We both had something to share with each other. I told her how I felt. She then said it was time to be completely honest with me. She was transsexual. I did not deal with that. I attacked her, verbally, for being deceitful, for thinking any man would be okay with that, and much more. She committed suicide within days of our conversation. I had to face the guilt; I had to face my prejudice; I had to face how I defined love. I had to find a way to forgive myself, and I have never been through something so difficult in my life.

Susan, I really like your answers but particularly how you defined the steps of the gradient change. I understand that concept much better now thanks to your answer. Jeanne

Thank you Margaret! I appreciate any insights.

I’m working making as much visual instead of words, but that sure is a challenge isn’t it!

I completely understand. I got tripped up because I misunderstood a major assignment, but I got caught up this weekend. I read your suggestion about doing the assignments in Word first. Fortunately, I tend to do that with everything! So, fortunately, I didn’t lose too much. I haven’t had to time to read what everyone else is doing, but I hope to find some time this week to read yours.

    Thank you for your comments.

Yes, great question. There is a complex journey. Andrea will be given several steps to follow to come to her ability to forgive. Stay tuned and see if it works for you. I love honesty, so if it doesn’t work for you, please let me know.

I really appreciate the feedback. I am very, very new at this!

    luv ya, Jeanne🤗
