Jason’s Villain has a “Great” Plan.

What I learned is… that the villain’s plan is the key to the structure, which is the reason that my learning story is currently not great.

I do like the focus on the villain’s plan first as it is a shift in thinking. And since the hero is really reacting to the villain’s plan for most of the film it makes sense that the plan is driving the story. At least until the hero catches up or begins to act proactively.

    1. The end goal is to keep the world using gas as they always have in the same way they always have. To keep the energy power dynamic status quo.

    2. By destroying everyone who figures out the lie, Globo Oil keeps all the little lemmings marching off the cliff and paying for it By tricking everyone into believing that by keeping the status quo they are saving the planet, being virtuous (saving grandma and the children) and demonize those who want to reveal the truth. By declaring war on truth through asymetric warfare, false narratives, false flags, and controlled opposition.

    3. Act like Globo Oil is saving the environment.

    – status quo is virtuous because grandparents were fooled by the lie as well. Historical – way we’ve always done things. (Grandparents elders)

    – Appeal to authority (respect authority) – Appeal to greed (buy you off)

    – Character assassination (social media plants) destroys his fiance’s life

    – False narrative spread through social media (deep fakes) destroys his families life – take away retirement, health care, benefits, pension, property.

    – False narrative spread through government (misinformation) destroys his life

    – Appear to Kidnap loved one. Frame up in false flag = tempt hero to react and have him frame himself (on camera)

    – Close friend betrayal for money/survival (sells out)

    – Attempt to incarcerate or put in asylum (to use the system to punish and remove)

    – Controlled Op betrayal – those he believes are going to help reveal instead betray him and frame him for additional prosecution (the controlled media joins Globo Oil in the smear because Globo Oil is their largest advertiser and owner through a subsidiary)

    – Present unwinnable front (Political pressure from politicians (Mayor/Senator)

    – Appear to not be in charge – (stepped deceptions – appeals to authority hiding the head of medusa)

    – Assassination and then destruction of all who helped (full out warfare – giant false flag to burn the entire town and surrounding areas.)

    Jason’s Basic Insinct Stacking Suspense

    – That the challenges and reveals may seem random but are actually very calculated.

    – The film is well structured with stepped reveals and mis-directs.

    – Each scene reveals Catherine toying with nick and to his folly he allows and encourages it. He’s on a path to hell driven by the guilt for unpunished murder. He’s drawn to another killer who also wishes for their own destruction, because they have the same deep wound.

    – Not sure I have a good handle on the MIS.

    ———–

    Jason’s SOTL Stacking Suspense

    – Disgusted by the content of both of the films. Has been a challenge to see past that. Good structure and the construction and execution of the RED HERRING at the end of the second act was very well done.

    – Learned that the stepped reveals are happening almost continuously.

    – Both films “deep wounds” have HUGE logic flaws in their wound expressions.

    – BI was ultimately unrewarding because the reveal of the icepick was the ultimate failure to deliver on the promise of Catherine’s death at the hands of Nick and the end of Nick’s career if not his life. They both deserved to die for being murderers and the audience didn’t get the satisfaction of that happy ending. And she decided not to kill him because he backed down from the idea of having kids?

    – SOTL cannibalism was illogical – unless Dr. Lecter was an idiot. And why, if he was so smart did he take so much pride in such an inferior protoge as Buffalo Bill?

    – Crawford should have been afraid of Dr. Lecter. And the two real bad guys as painted by the movie were Crawford and the asylum warden Chilton – both expressed mild sexual interest in Starling. The honorable mention being the senator who’s daughter was kidnapped who got a nice sexualized breast feeding reference from the good doctor himself. The nice cannibal with pedo overtones who wanted to know graphic details about Starlings possible underage sexual traumas…. he was the good guy? Well obviously, I mean he tried to protect Starling and talked Miggs into suicide after Miggs threw his sperm in Starling’s face. It’s like the spagetti scene from Lady and the Tramp but with more lotion. How romantic!

    Jason’s World and Characters!

What I learned doing this assignment is… that I don’t know some of these pieces and it’s bugging me.

    1. Remind us of your CONCEPT and the Big M.I.S. of your story.

Big Mystery: How does Anthony threaten the petroleum industry? <div>

Big Intrigue: Who pulls the strings of Oil industry? Who’s really in charge? Who is the Villian/Enemy?

Big Suspense: Death and character assassination of Anthony, and the people he loves.

    2. Tell us the Intriguing World you have selected for this story.

    Hacking

    Main Stream Media

    Assassins both literal and character

    Oil fields- myths

    3. With your top 2 or 3 characters, tell us the role they play and then answer these three questions:

    Hero: Anthony

    A. Mystery: How does he find out why and who is targeting him? </div><div>

    B. Suspense: Will he be able to stop and or expose them

    C. Intrigue: Will anyone believe him?

    Villian: Victoria Stanton

    A. Mystery: Why is she targeting Anthony? How will she destroy him? </div><div>

    B. Suspense: Will she be able to destroy Anthony and anyone who could help him and frame him before he can go public?

    C. Intrigue: Why would she and the media and politicians lie?

    Red Herring: Professor Talman

    A. Mystery: Is Professor Talman on Victoria’s side? </div>

    B. Suspense: Will Professor help or betray Anthony?

    C. Intrigue: Why wouldn’t a priest of science follow their own religion?

    Jason’s Big M.I.S.

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” – the concept of a good thriller seems like the fundamental element. Everything else is just execution.

Log Line: Student Anthony’s life gets deleted and framed for murder after his car breaks down on the way back to college. Now on the run Anthony must figure out why he’s been targeted before he’s crushed beneath the compromised government bureaucracy or killed by misinformed law enforcement.

    1. What are the conventions of your story?

Unwitting but Resourceful Hero: Anthony Mott <div>

Dangerous Villain: Victoria Stanton CEO Globo Oil

High stakes: Anthony’s life, Mollie’s life, Anthony’s family, Mr. Gregg, Home City

Life and death situations: SmogPro escape, Auto Shop Fight, Framed for Gregg’s Murder, Escape from Police, Anthony’s Family threatened, Mollie Kidnapped, City targeted.

This story is thrilling because- don’t know

    2. Tell us the Big M.I.S. of your story?

Big Mystery: How does Anthony threaten the petroleum industry? </div>

Big Intrigue: Globo Oil attacking and destroying anyone who threatens their monopoly.

Big Suspense: Will Victoria Stanton, her assassins, and hackers destroy Anthony and his future? Or the future of a whole community?

    The Matrix Thriller conventions

What I learned doing this assignment is… now able to clearly see the stepped reveals that occur to almost continuously add to the danger and inform/intrigue the viewer and make the stakes of the sci-fi world real.

    2. Watch the movie and as you do, note the conventions of THIS story.

Unwitting but Resourceful Hero: Neo/Thomas Anderson <div>

Dangerous Villain: The Matrix (AI), Agent Smith, Agents, Cypher

High stakes: Neo’s life, Trinity’s life, Morpheus’ life, Tank’s life, survival of human race, City of Zion, Tertially – Mouse, Apoc, Switch and Dozer.

Life and death situations: Trinity almost caught in Matrix spying on Neo, Thomas Anderson (Neo) caught at work, interrogated by Agents and bugged, bug removal, red/pill blue pill-rescue from sewer, Squiddy/EMP reveal,Deja Vu Trap leads to Morpheus sacrifice, Reveal Cypher’s ambush of team, Morpheus rescue – Lobby fight, rooftop battle (bullettime reveal), helicopter shootout, rescue Morpheus, helicopter crash, Subway fight (bullettime fight) – draw, Squiddies attack the Nebuchadnezzar (Tank, Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo in real world), Neo runs into ambush by Smith in Apartment – Killed in Matrix, Trinity’s “SnowWhite Kiss” revives, fights Agent Smith and destroys him, EMP destroys Squiddies just before ship destroyed.
This movie is thrilling because? It takes you to a new take on a familiar reality.

    3. What is the BIG Mystery, Intrigue, and Suspense of this story?

Big Mystery: What is the Matrix? Is Neo the “One”? </div>

Big Intrigue: Matrix is trying to destroy the resistance and perhaps the One, and trying to destroy all remaining free humans by destroying Zion.

Big Suspense: Will the Matrix destroy Neo before he can become the One? Will Morpheus give away the secret codes for Zion?

    <div>

    4. Anything else you’d like to say about what made this movie a great thriller?

The concepts in this film and the philosophy underpinning it have entered the zeitgeist and become part of everyday conversation to this day. What is also fascinating is that the writers and filmmakers themselves didn’t and don’t really understand what they made. See all the rest of the Wachowskis’ films for proof that this concept is far beyond them. Picked up Jean Baudrillard – Simulacra and Simulation and the filmmakers are scratching the surface of the nature of reality, the ideas. and the function of Simulacra in our society. But the “truths” in the philosophy ground this story like nothing else they have made. Arguably there has not been another film since, that has had the immediate and lasting effects on the average viewers perception of their reality or the language of filmmaking in the industry itself.

Jason – four features and several short shorts.

Hope to get a through understanding of the thriller structure and get one or more saleable script idea(s).

My girlfriend says I’m impossible and don’t listen to anyone. I said, “What Lorraine? What?” (In my best George McFly impersonation.) There was also some offhand comment about my elevator speech not being long enough to get from the parking level to the lobby. She also said that she’s “Super supportive.” I like to write action, sci-fi and rom-coms – frequently with female leads. I like avocados, reading, and on warm days long walks off of short piers.
