    GROUP RELEASE FORM

As a member of this group, I agree to the following:

    1. That I will keep the processes, strategies, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class confidential, and that I will NOT share any of this program either privately, with a group, posting online, writing articles, through video or computer programming, or in any other way that would make those processes, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class available to anyone who is not a member of this class.

    2. That each writer’s work here is copyrighted and that writer is the sole owner of that work. That includes this program which is copyrighted by Hal Croasmun. I acknowledge that submission of an idea to this group constitutes a claim of and the recognition of ownership of that idea.

I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.

    3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.

    4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.

    5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.

    6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

This completes the Group Release Form for the class.

    Hello all,

    I’m Jim Kanter.

I’ve completed 8 feature screenplays and numerous shorts, and started more than I want to admit to.

Love the ScreenwritingU classes. I’m a retired filmmaker and not really interested in restarting my career, but I look forward to getting back into writing again as a hobby. If I can sell some scripts my wife would be very happy (and travel first-class around the world.) I enjoy thrillers and want to learn how to write them. I’m currently writing an action-comedy for another class so I may fall behind in this iteration, but I will plow through nonetheless.

I live in Costa Rica and am a Tai Chi and Qigong instructor.

    ¡Pura vida!

    Jim’s Intentional Lead Characters

My Vision: I want to be so much better that I look forward to writing and become much more productive.

What I learned doing this assignment is to be open to lots of different ways to consider how to make the characters more unique and fit the story better.

    Character: John

Logline: John loves being a superhero, so when he loses his superpowers he goes on a quest to restore them.

Unique: He has always been someone whose mission in life has always been to protect and help others.

    Character: Jane

Logline: Also an ex-superhero, Jane is John’s wife and joins him on his quest to restore their superpowers and their marriage.

Unique: She is incredibly strong, resilient and independent, torn between what she wants for herself and what others need.

    Character: Ernest

Logline: Jane’s older brother who is also an ex-superhero and joins them on their road trip.

Unique: As capable and accomplished as he is, he always felt inferior to his younger sister.

Jim Kanter’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!

Jim’s writing vision: To start writing again so that I enjoy it by being more effective and productive.

What I learned from this assignment: Don’t get stuck in one mindset/solution. By considering different alternatives you might find something that works even better.

    Title: Super Lost

Concept: A family of superheroes lose their superpowers and have trouble adjusting to being normal so they go on a road trip to find their mentor and discover how to regain them.

    Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle

Hola! I’m Jim Kanter, I’m retired and living la Pura Vida in Costa Rica these days.

Among my many careers I was an award-winning feature filmmaker (and I also wrote that screenplay) and I’ve written 8 feature screenplays and many shorts. Have taken several classes with ScreenwritingU (each was better than any I had taken at USC film school) but haven’t done any writing for years.

Am getting back into the game as I have had a couple of ideas floating around in my head for years that I want to finally write.

I also teach tai chi and qigong and am getting back into creating music.

She’s torn between knowing that she has a remarkable gift that allows her to help others, but it also means she doesn’t have privacy and opportunity to just have a normal family out of the limelight. Not everyone wants to be a celebrity.

Yes. I see it not so much as a superhero movie but a fish-out-of-water comedy and a look at family relationships in challenging times.

I’m in Guanacaste in the NW Pacific side. On the coast in a small town called Las Catalinas about 45 minutes from Liberia.
