“What I learned doing this assignment is formatting is difficult.”

    1. Write an Action scene for your project that includes each of these formatting techniques.

    A. Basic Formatting Location: 5 seniors (Lee, Rose, Maurice, Larry, DeVon with driver Tasha) on Hair bus drives through SF downtown streets then into dark underground parking lot; quiet talking

    B. <s>Dash or</s> Ellipsis. As the huge, burly guards walk toward them, seniors stand very still then using ju jit su knock down all the guards.

    C. Sound, then Explanation Every scene has some classic hip hop music that matches the different moods. Tupac is first heard in opening in Senior community room.

    D. Mixing Sluglines into Action. Seniors talk quietly about violent action they could take against Mac…then each begin to remember a variety violent, negative past memories…then they enter office and Larry says, “Sit down please Mac. We would like to talk.”

    E. Stacking Action After Mac sits, they take seats around the desk & began to talk softly. Rose, in Spanish, tells how they lost Juan to accidental fentanyl overdose. Lee talks about her niece who died from fentanyl. Maurice & DeVon quietly walk in circle around the group. Sounds began softly & the air in the room seems to change colors and hallucinations began over & over.

Shock. Suddenly Mac jerks his body around in the chair. He is experiencing severe mental reactions; like he is in a drugged mental state.

Suspense. The five wait silently now as they watch Mac contort both face & body

    F. Stacking Dialogue Seniors talking softly…not written yet

    2. Choose images, actions, and sounds that make this scene visceral! Memories of seniors turning into hallucinations.

Lesson 14. Kay’s Great Action Set Piece!

What I learned doing this assignment is there is always new research & news to add to story line”

    1. Build in the meaning.

Pre-Action: Senior center on 18th St., SF. A couple blocks from Mission High & Dolores Park. A few short blocks to Castro district. In community room, seniors pursue individual hobbies or play chess. Lots of topical discussions. Background music: Tupac

Action: Sad news about Juan, a popular volunteer, accidental overdose.

Post-Action: Each senior begins personal & group research (phones, laptop, newspapers, library websites, census websites) on fentanyl epidemic, discussions & developing an action board in their community room.

    2. Make the Action Unique.

STEP 1: List your 9 Places For Uniqueness.

    1. Senior Center, community room

    2. Window overlooking street parking

    3. Phone & laptop/websites visuals

    4. Haircut Van interior

    5. Downtown SF business tower, interiors

    6. Mac Janssen Office

    7. Several hallucinations

    8. Split screen of divestment actions worldwide

    9. Panoramic 3-D shot from Twin Peaks/Pink Triangle ending at Senior Center

STEP 2: Use Strategies For Uniqueness to elevate them.

Seniors using chess strategies to discuss actions

Seniors researching on phones & laptops

Seniors after haircuts able to perform active, strong ju jit su.

Seniors use voice, storytelling , hypnotism to create hallucinations

Create through the 9 Action Emotions.

    Kay’s Unique Action!

What I learned doing this assignment is this is a series not just one film.”

What is unique about each of these places:

    <div>
    Environment:
    senior home & city highrise
    Rules: Money
    is important. Human life expendable
    Villain: Mac
Janssen, owner of fentanyl manufacturing corporation
    </div><div>

    Mission: close
    down fentanyl production
    Struggle: frail
    seniors against huge business

    </div><div>

    Unique
    Skillset: mental capacity!

    Meaning: Make
    life worth living

    Allies: Beauty
    van, memories & past experiences

    Weapon: magic
hair cut for physical ability, mental prowess

    </div>

    2. Brainstorm ways to make one or more of those places unique:

    <div>
    A. What if
    Mac poisons every visitor</div><div>

    B. Take to
an extreme the team of frail elders would temporarily be subdued by poison,
but because of their past experience in the 60s & 70s with drugs they
    would quickly recover.

    C.
Specific to character or environment. Seniors are physically frail &
Mac & his corporation seem very very physically strong

    D.
Shocking or Surprising. Mental abilities are superior to physical

    E. Go opposite.
Each person on team has special ability/power that others did not realize
    in beginning

    F. What
haven’t we seen? More of backstories will come in future films

    Kay’s Level 3 Action Emotion

What I learned doing this assignment is a lot of my ideas are visual & not easy to put into words.”

Danger The group talks about alternative ways to take on Mac. They discuss very violent torture but then agree that is not their nature. Each relates memories of mental torture (from drugs, trauma, etc) and they decide to develop a mental torture to subdue Mac & force him to dissolve his fentanyl empire.

Excitement. As they relate memories & have flash backs they get excited of ways to use these mental actions.

    Adrenaline.
They brainstorm & each offers unique ideas for the mental action they will
use on Mac. Each has skills that will
help. Larry will hypnotize with his voice. Maurice & DeVon will use
movement. Lee & Rose will engage

What I learned doing this assignment is this is a team & everyone has an important role.”

Surprise After using ju jit su on all the guards, the five enter the office of Mac Janssen. He expects them to attack him. Instead Larry says, “Sit down please Mac. We would like to talk.” After he sits, they take seats around the desk & began to talk softly. Rose, in Spanish, tells how they lost Juan to accidental fentanyl overdose. Kay’s Level 1 Action Emotions

“What I learned doing this assignment is look at small interactions that impact whole narrative.

Anxiety Maurice & DeVon play chess. Maurice rubs his forehead & groans. Then he has a series of flashbacks of Vietnam both battle action & drug use in town.

Fear Maurice struggles to stop the flashback, including hitting his head. The images grow more intense & louder.

Relief DeVon talks softly to Maurice, in a quiet, soothing voice. “Hey man, we can use your visions.” He ask Maurice to describe what he is seeing & feeling & then explains how they can use the mental manipulation of Mac. Maurice slowly relaxes & becomes enthusiastic about this new idea.

    Kay’s Favorite Twists!

What I learned doing this assignment is to think about alternative action, not just physical.

Danger: Lee falls & seems unconscious after hearing news

It Just Got Worse: Lee seems to have not memory

New Threat: Others in group feel more frail & unable to physically act

Safety: Tasha talks quietly to group as she does DeVon’s hair. Her calm, careful speaking helps the group regulate their fears.

Identity Hidden: DeVon has most limited physical ability but also has mot knowledge of ju jit su.

Unexpected Support: Tasha is a voice of calm & assurance to everyone.

Betrayal: Nora announces that the Beauty Van can not visit any longer due to health code (lie, jealous of Tasha’s closerelationship with group)

Plan Fails: First van ride to city postponed.

Trap: Emotional let down & depression

Escape: DeVon & Maurice talk about drug use & imagination

    Lost Resources: Physical abilities

New Resources: Mental manipulation (simulation of drug states)

Attack: Once Mac is restrained, the group does not use physical force but bombards him with mental manipulation images, sounds & smells

Unexpected Weapon: Simulation of drug mental states

Surprising Response: Mac is conquered & dissolves fentanyl empire

Surprising Alliance: Group memories of drug use at various times in life
