Character Arc (Old Ways and New Ways)
Old Ways: E is set in the ways of the clan
New Ways: E accepting those outside the clan
6 – 8 changes or steps that need to happen for that character to go from who they are in the beginning (Old Ways) to who they are in the ending (New Ways).
1. She will be upset that the raptor found her in the forest and that she shouldn’t be there.
2. She will take responsibility for removing the raptor from the forest – per order of her mother.
3. She will learn about the raptor and come to like her
4. She will see how unfairly they both are being treated by the other clan dragons
5. She will see the cleverness of the raptor, still willing to help the dragon clan after being shunned
6. They will work together to remove themselves from a dangerous situation
7. She will stand against her mother and the clan to protect the raptor and keep her around
Brainstorm dramatic events or tests that could cause those changes for the character.
<In each encounter what is something they want to be accepted for but aren’t in the way they are not accepting the raptor>
Violet gets frightened by a creature of the Sheltered Forest. She backs away, but stumbles over a rock, landing her in the Fanzia area of the forest, home of the Tree Chest, where the dragon horde is stored. This area is forbidden to young dragons, and most other non-elder tree dragons, or anyone without a business reason to be there. It is well gaurded by the Hoard Gaurd. E has to talk her way out of trouble and defends the raptor seeing it was an honest mistake. He will take it up with her mother and a mark against her in the council. This does not bode well for E one day being on the council. She apologizes and resolves to get rid of the ‘intruder’.
E takes her through her favorite place in the forest, the watering hole, a small lagoon to the southeast of the forest. Out of excitement, Violet jumps in the water to splash around. They start to bond and learn about each other, until they are bullied out of the lagoon by the brutes. Once again, E has to protect and stand up to their bullying and non-dragon like behavior.
The brutes decide to go to E’s mother to inform her that they weren’t just leaving, they were at the lagoon
The pair have a misunderstanding making Violet question E’s committment. She runs off. Violet realizes she should go after her – as she did make a promise.
E’s mother finds V alone thinking she already escorted the raptor out, she reminds her she is obligated to attend her brother’s showing in the Challenges. She follows her brothers towards the arena
<Mother tries to push for new with the council -a new subject for her youngest sun or to get him in the challenges, but they aren’t accepting her arguments.>
E’s sprite (pet) comes and merps in her ear. R mimicks this sound. She makes it throughout their journey. When they part and E heads to the Challenges with her brothers, her sprite appears again. Makes the same sound which reminds her of her friend.
E and R come across a nest of TD eggs at the bottom of a tree. R investigates and accidentally hits one with her tail sending it rolling down a hill out of the forest.
As the hunters reel TD in and try to gather her and the egg, one of the hunters feels a bite on his bottom. He yells and R rowrs. The other hunter is frightened, but he grabs a spike and hurls it at R. Hunters grab R in a trap. E coughs fire at the hunter but he ducks away, letting go of R. R knocks them down with her tail, grabs the netting that holds E and disappears back into the forest.
The pair are caught again and must confront the clan to regain Es standing and to allow the friendship.

Kay Hundley – Lesson 5 – Transformational Structure
What I learned in this assignment is where to draw the breaks between acts. I find the transition between the Act 2 Turning Point and the resolution somewhat difficult to discern. In my head it all just flows, so it’s good to be able to differentiate that a bit better.

What I learned in this assignment is to give my character’s their own voice and to see things through different lenses. Sometimes they know more about the story than I do. They help fill in the gaps and make decisions.
QUESTIONS FOR YOUR PROTAGONIST
Tell me about yourself.
I’m a dragonet born of Hgielyak and Lekim of the Sheltered Forest, last of the tree dragon clans and keepers of Hoard of Gorgon. We’re pretty impressive, but we keep to the forest to protect and grow our clan.
Why do you think you were called to this journey? Why you?
Well, I was at the spirit tree the other day and – like this morning, there was a rustling in the bushes. I thought it was a message from the spirits and there was this strange creature. A notdragon. Not a dragon pet either. It looked up at me with these big bright eyes. I turned to the spirit tree to see if it was a message from her and then the notdragon held my wing and wrapped itself in it. I think it was more frightened then me. Anyway – that was Violet. I tried to move her away but she was so timid. Notdragons don’t belong here. I don’t know how she got around the forest guards, but there she was. So now she is back and I have to make sure she goes safely. She’s not a danger I don’t think, but she seems kinda sneeky to have gotten in twice.
Because I think it’s my fault she is here now, I’ve taken it on as my duty as a dragon and protector to make sure she goes safely and the clan is safe.
You are up against this raptor and the whole clan is counting on you to remove it. What is it about them that makes this journey even more difficult for you?
I – We must abide by the dragon code. As you said, the clan is counting on me and I don’t want to let them down. I promised mother. Poor Violet seems attached to me and I have to make her go. I’m kind of torn. (pauses and nods) but we must abide by dragon code. It’s what keeps us safe. Notdragons aren’t welcome. I just feel kinda sad for Violet.
In order to survive or accomplish this, you are going to have to step way outside of your box. What changes do you expect to make and which of them will be the most difficult?
Well, I like everyone to be happy and I think she’s going to be sad when she has to say goodbye. I don’t know what to do. I … never hurt anyone before. But to not hurt her, I’ll have to go against my mother’s orders. I’ve not ever done that either. these are both difficult thoughts for a young dragonet. What would the elders say? I know what the elders would say. Mother is the smartest elder. One day I will be the smartest elder like Mother. Mother is very wise.
What habits or ways of thinking do you think will be the most difficult to let go of?
I have to? I guess being the peacemaker. I don’t know how to mend this now. I didn’t think it would be hard to just walk her out of the forest. Now my hearts feel bad. I… I must learn to be wise like Mother and do what is right. A dragon must do what is right.
For now she is my subject and under my protection. Once we get to the edge of the forest, she is no longer my subject and will be free to go and make her own way. A dragon should not go beyond the gaping green. Not unless they are a member of the Hoard Guild. The Hoard Guild is no place for a dragonet, especially not a dragonel.
What fears, insecurities and wounds have held you back?
I’m afraid of hurting this creature. I’m afraid of letting down the clan. I still have much to prove to be on the elder council. I know it’s a long ways away before I am of age to even be considered, but will have to be accepted by the whole clan by then. It’s a lot. I don’t want to be remembered as the dragonel who let a raptor loose in the forest!
What skills, background or expertise makes you well-suited to face this conflict or antagonist?
I’m a good peacemaker. Usually. I have some time along this journey to figure out what I will say or do to keep the peace with Violet. I’ve learned much from Mother to be able to know what is right for a dragon. I hope I make them proud of me.
When other young dragons start being notdragon-like, I get them to see the good in the dragon ways and they usually behave better.
What are you hiding from the other characters? What don’t you want them to know?
That I don’t think the raptor is bad. She’s kind of sweet. But dragon code is dragon code.
What do you think of the clan? Violet?
For the clan, I wish they weren’t so angry about her. Yes she has gotten into some trouble, but not that bad. No one was hurt (yet), no real damage. Maybe they just don’t trust me to do what is right. They always tell me I’m too young for this or too young for that. Well I’m not. I’m a good dragon! They’ll see!
Violet is a little wacky (laughs). She’s kinda funny. Very curious. She talks a lot and hides a lot. I don’t know how she got in here cause she is so afraid of other dragons, but not of me. I can be fierce and scary too. (shows teeth) I don’t yet have my fire, but I keep practicing. Want to see? I’ll be a great protector one day, like the elders.
Anyway – yeah. I wish she would just follow me so this wouldn’t be so bad in the end and would be a quicker task, so I could get back. Brother has a challenges today and I can’t miss that. He will do great. I saw him practicing around the activity tree. Oh, yes, Violet. She is OK, but sadly, she is a notdragon. Notdragons aren’t allowed.
Tell me your side of this whole conflict / story.
Well I did. I met this raptor. Now, I will tell you, I don’t really like notdragons, as they are very disruptive. This notdragon as you might learn is very disruptive. We don’t much like disruptions (unless it is we who are doing the disrupting). So I offered to take it away from the forest once the clan discovered her.
Mother was not happy, but agreed it would teach me a valuable lesson to be her escort and she would be my subject, so I’m taking her and she is not really following me – not until she gets scared of something, so it’s a slower task, than I thought. I wish raptors had wings.
What does it do for your life is you succeed here?
They will think I’m a hero. I rid the clan of an outsider. I might get a legend song. That would be cool. Does that make me succeed? Is hurting her a ‘success’? It doesn’t feel like it.
What will you do if do not succeed and the raptor doesn’t go?
(stares) I… Maybe I’ll think of something. I… Have you ever had to hide a raptor? This is a lot for a young dragonet. Mother will help, I’m sure. I… *shrugs her wings*

QUESTIONS FOR YOUR ANTAGONIST
Tell me about yourself.
I iz a just a lonely little raptorz. All the creatures are afraid of me cos some of my kind are hunters. I don’t hunt. I don’t like hunting or hurting peoplez. I iz a nice raptorz.
Having to do with this journey, what are your strengths and weaknesses?
Iz a scared raptorz. Sometimes I mess fings up, but I don’t mean to. Sometimes I am a bad raptor and make the nice dragon mad. I don’t mean to. (points to tail) Iz a pretty tail but a little heavy. I fink it is pretty special.
Why are you committed to making making them change?
Raptorz wuv the tree dragon. She is strong and protects raptorz. Wants to stay with my friend.
What do you get out of succeeding in your plan?
I can haz family! Friends are family too. E iz sister. Raptorz wants sister.
What drives you toward your mission, even in the face of danger, ruin, or death?
D-death? (hides) Where? No missionz, just trying to spend more time with my tree dragon. Raptorz is pretty clever. I knows a good sister. E iz good sister. She iz protectorz.
What secrets do you keep out of fear / insecurity?
I don’t haz anywhere else to go. I didn’t mean to stumble into the forest. I was chased by other hunters and hid in the bushes. I heard what E was saying to that big tree, a spirits tree she called it. I was just listening to her kind words, but she found me. I just knew she was safe. Like home. Like home was.
Compared to other people like you, what makes you special?
I’m not like other people like me. My kind hunt, many of them. Not all raptorz are hunters, but we are clever and work well together. I can work well but to help, for goodz. I was too kind for others like me. Most raptorz are fearless but I am afraid of a lot of things.
What do you think of Entrysk? The clan?
My sisterz. I hope she be my sister. She is pretty and smart and a good flier. She’s very nice. I keepz her. I hope. She sometimes seems she is not happy with the Raptorz, but I try to do good. I be a good sister too. Maybe she listen to the mean tree dragons who don’t like the Raptorz. I hope not. I like E.
Some dragonz are scary. They not nice to me. They don’t know me and maybe they are scared of me like I’m scared of them. Her brothers not scared – or scary.
Tell me your side of this whole conflict / story.
I came to see my friend again. She said I would be in trouble if caught in the forest. But I got hungry and followed her to the feasting table. I stayed behind the big tree. I forgetz what she called it. E went to sneak us some food. I tried to stay hidden. There are lotz of tree dragons. LOTZ. One came flying by and stopped, mid air, hovered and make loud screechy noises. other dragons came by, also screeching. There are a lotz of tree dragons. She came back and I ran right into her wing. I couldn’t really see much but there was lotz of commuh…commotionz. Loud dragon screeching.
Then we were going for a walk. I likes walkz with my tree dragon. I like learning about the dragonz and the forest. I feel safer with my tree dragon, until other dragons and creatures come along. I don’t think they want me here. E sayz we will be OKz. I iz ‘subject’ and dragons always protect their subject. See? She is good sisterz.

1. What I learned doing this assignment is some characters are easier to write than others. These exercises really help you get inside their head and I wish I had originally started out getting to know these characters a bit more.
I added Violet as the main protagonist as she is the change agent, so she is added with this assignment focused on Entrysk and Violet. I loved getting to know Violet.
2. Pick the type of role your Protagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
The main protagonist for this story is Entrysk. She is part explorer, part dreamer. Her willingness to explore and learn more helps her dream of a brighter future where through acceptance and understanding they can live a better life.
She takes pride in all things ‘dragon’ particularly being a protector, thus this role of protector leads her to learning about the newcomer and realize other non-dragon things have value too.
Age range and Description
She is a young dragonet about 20-25 years old (or 2-3 in human years). She is a smaller version of her mother in almost everyway. She likes it like that, even if she knows her appearance will change as she gets older.
Internal Journey
From blindly believing in the traditions and proud to follow the old dragon ways to accepting and fighting for things she took the time to get to understand.
External Journey
Follows mother closely making things “just so” and dreams of being an elder so she can keep the traditions alive, to stands up for change and accepts things different than her.
Motivation
Gain her mothers and the clan’s respect by safely escorting the intruder out of the forest.
Wound
She so wants to be an elder like her mother but is too young and hasn’t had any good opportunities to prove herself. She feels the other dragons don’t see her over her older brothers. She doesn’t think she is really appreciated in the clan.
Mission/Agenda
She takes it upon herself to make sure the raptor is safely escorted from the forest and doesn’t bring harm to the clan.
Secret
She is the reason the raptor came to the forest.
What makes them special?
She’s very empathetic and prefers when everyone is getting along. She often plays the peacemaker.
————
WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER?
She is generally very positive about life and happy and willing to do what it takes to make others happy and help out. She does have a serious side when it comes to being a ‘proper’ dragon and playing by the rules.
TRAITS
Proud, friendly, motherly, a bit curious (nosey?), protective.
SUBTEXT
She is trying not to like the raptor, as she knows they can’t be friends, but finds it difficult not to like her.
FLAW
Her pride
VALUES
Peace, love, dragons, trees, her family, playing by the rules (not necessarily in that order)
IRONY
She has to break the rules and disobey her family in order to keep her friendship with Violet and keep the peace.
WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?
Her pride in following the dragon code puts her in the perfect position to ‘protect the clan’ and protect her new friend. Her being the peacemaker and wanting to make everyone happy makes it easy for her to apply that to other creatures. Both of those traits will force her to make a decision between her clan and her friend.
———
3. Pick the type of role your Antagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
VIOLET
Violet is the Change Agent. She is a young raptor, who takes to Entrysk after entering the Sheltered Forest. This is forbidden without Elder Council permission. This sets in motion a journey to take her out of the forest and embark on several adventures along the way. These adventures will help the two get to know each other and build a bond that the clansdragons will try to break, if Violet’s actions don’t break it first.
Age range and Description
The raptor is young, about E’s age (in dino years), slightly smaller. Small enough to fit in a dragonet wing. She has brilliant purple markings from her round snoot all the way to the tip of her tail.
Internal Journey
Timid and afraid to strong and brave.
External Journey
Afraid to move without the protection of her special tree dragon friend, bit clumsy and inadvertently getting them into some trouble, to protecting her tree dragon and saving the missing dragon egg, stands up to the clan.
Motivation
Being friends with E.
Wound
Lost her family – orphaned because she doesn’t like to hunt – or they were killed by hunters, and other raptors wouldn’t take her on.
Mission/Agenda
To gain E’s friendship, and thus needing the acceptance of other tree dragons.
Secret
She’s not a hunter, she doesn’t like to kill other creatures, she is too loving, but still a clever raptor.
What makes them special?
She is very accepting and loving and happy to learn about everything. She wants to know all about the tree dragons. Even though she is not welcome by them, she still wants to understand them and accept them.
——————–
WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER?
She only wants to be loved and accepted, but is shunned. We want to see her succeed. She (literally) looks up to E and wants to make her happy and have fun. We’ve all been in that situation of trying to impress someone but failing. Trying to a good thing but it doesn’t turn out that way, and still hope to be accepted.
TRAITS
Believes in fun, friendship, and honesty. Loves Chocolate.
SUBTEXT
Is she being clumsy for a reason, is she that clever, or is she really just that clumsy?
FLAW
Fear/timidness
VALUES
Life, fun, freedom, her tail, her friend. Oh, and chocolate.
IRONY
Her clumsiness is what gets E and the egg captured by hunters (the one type of creature she can’t accept), but her cleverness is what saves the day and gains her the acceptance she so desires. Though she does not abide by hunting, it’s these exact skills she puts to use to protect her protector. For a character afraid of everything, she seems to be the first to try and like it.
WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?
Her ability to accept others teaches E how to be accepting, and why it’s better to learn about the things you don’t understand rather than just dismiss them. Even though her clumsiness gets them in some trouble, her antics are too charming for the young dragon to resist.

1. What I learned.
What I learned doing this assignment is that it is a good practice to do this for as many characters as possible. Even though I had short write ups of each of the main characters, this really helps to expand on who and why they do the things they do. On the surface, it was a great list of things to consider as you create your characters, but it also helps lay the foundation and build the framework for your story.

Authority – The main protagonist is the clan, mainly the dragon elders, including E’s mother, father, and uncle, and several characters they meet in clan along the way and the dragon tenets.
We’ll follow the mother for this assignment as the voice of the clan. She agrees with the elders and is against the newcomer. She instructs E to get rid of this intruder and gets her brothers to follow and look after her. E’s mother in particular, who E idolizes and wants to grow up to be just like, is the main voice of dissent instructing E to ensure the intruder is removed.
Age range and Description
Hgielyak is an adult dragon “over a hundred years old” if you ask her, or about 40 in human years. Her husband will remind her she’s almost half way to 200, though. She’s slender, but muscular, with a long thin green tail with just a puff of white on the end. Said to be the prettiest of all dragons.
Internal Journey
Worried about things that may disrupt their way of life to being open to outsiders and accepting new traditions and guests.
External Journey
Corrects undragon-like behavior, disregards undragon-like things to accepting her daughters new friend and inviting her back to the feasting table. Tells the council members the Rule Against Raptors is hereby amended.
– Motivation
Worried about the future of Sheltered Forest (on the council of elders) and its inhabitants.
– Wound
Remembers when the dragonhold was strong, but hunters and raiders (such as other raptors) have greatly reduced their population.
– Mission/Agenda
To rid the forest of outsiders
– Secret
The hordes have remained stagnant and resources are depleting
– What makes them special?
She is a fierce protector of her family, a proud dragon, loving, but firm, mother with a big heart. She would do anything for her family.
4. What other characters might be necessary?
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
- Violet, the young raptor who befreinds E to the chagrin of many inhabitants of the Sheltered Forest)
- Drake and Blaze (E’s brothers)
- The ‘brutes’ Brute and Derf (young ruffian dragons that get E and Violet into trouble).
MINOR ROLES
- Harry and Jim (two farmers/hunters outside the forest who capture E and the missing egg)
- Dragon Mother who loses her egg
BACKGROUND Characters
- Other tree dragons, elder council members, other creatures of the forest.
5. Pick your genre.

Hello all! I’m Kay Hundley.
I’ve written several treatments and started a few scripts of stories I have to tell. I recently finished a draft of one of them, but want to get serious into writing again.
Life took me in another direction, but I started writing again late last year after finally getting a copy of Final Draft.
I’m looking forward to getting more tips on polishing and finalizing this and turning the other treatments into full fledged scripts.
Some fun things about me: I’m also an instructional designer, so I may be reviewing this course from two lenses. I started out my career in media production. I’m a massive music fan and produced several live DVDs for artists/festivals. Before I got into video production, I wanted to go to college for writing. It was always a passion of mine and I used to really love it. Then… life. Well, life is now allowing me (i.e., I’M now allowing me) to get back to what makes life worth living.
Cheers,
-K.

What I got out of this lesson: How to consider the things that will inform your character’s arc and how to empower my writing. I thought I knew my story, but putting it down like this will improve it a lot and help build the structure better. It is also helping me understand my characters and their motivations better.

Working title: NEON WONDERLAND
A hopeful animated series about love, friendship, and acceptance. It follows an unlikely friendship between a young tree dragon and a raptor.
by: Kay Hundley
2. Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?
Entrysk (E) is a young tree dragon who befriends Violet (V), a young Raptor from outside the safe confines of the Sheltered Forest, where the tree dragons reside. They will all go through a transformation, including those in the clan that E holds dear.
INTERNAL JOURNEYS
E: From blindly believing in the traditions, proud with a disdain for anything different to accepting and fighting for things she took the time to get to understand.
Clan: From afraid of change and anything that may disrupt their way of life to being open to outsiders and new traditions.
Violet: From timid and afraid to strong and brave.
EXTERNAL JOURNEYS
E: Blindly follows mother and tradition, dreams of being an elder, frightened of anything different than what she knows to standing up for change and accepting things different than her, by befriending a Raptor.
Clan: Works to break up the friendship and rid the forest of this intruder to accepting and welcoming her.
Violet: Afraid to move without the protection of her special tree dragon friend, bit clumsy and inadvertently getting them into some trouble, to protecting her tree dragon and saving the missing dragon egg.
3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?
OLD WAYS
E:
– A dislike for things outside what she already knows.
– Protects the raptor out of tradition of being the protector, pride.
– Believes (only) in the ways of the dragon clan
– Curious, but unwilling to do things outside the order of the clan elders/tradition
– Somewhat serious and rigid as she prepares for elderdom (someday)
Clan:
The tree dragons are a small clan with very prescribed ways of doing things. They are a happy community steeped in tradition, afraid of change, certainly dislikes outsiders.
V:
– Unsure and afraid, timid
– Doesn’t like to be left alone
– Always hides in E’s wing for protection
– Always the first to run from something
– Clumsy
– A bit goofy
NEW WAYS
E:
– Questions and stands up to authority
– Goes against tradition/teachings to go out of her way to be with the raptor and protect the raptor out of love and friendship.
– Suggests other possibilities than dragon lore
Clan:
– Accepts something – and someone – new to their community.
– Restructures some tenets/processes to bring raptor into their fold.
V:
– Fiercely fights to protect E when she gets into trouble
– Saves the missing egg (that she inadvertently knocks out of the nest)
– Leaves the comfort of Es wing to speak to the Elder dragons
– Gets serious about being with the dragon clan
