Subtext Situation: Chloë is grounded by her mother and is told she can’t go to the football game.
Surface: She slams her chair under the table and marches up the staircase to her bedroom. The slam of the bedroom door is heard from the kitchen.
Beneath Surface: As Kasey goes up the stairs, from the second floor landing she notices Chloë outside talking to two guys who were working on her mother’s car earlier. By the time, Kasey gets up to the 3rd floor where the bedrooms are, she is startled to see Chloë in her room, at her desk, writing something down in her notebook.
What Kasey and the family doesn’t know, is that Chloë has been climbing up and down the big oak tree that she and the father planted when she was only a few months old. It happens to be right outside her bedroom window.

Dad is a womanizer and he loves it. He believes it’s a part of being a man. But he feels guilty for traveling so much due to his job so he lets the kids have their way even if they go against their mom- he’s a conformist. Especially with Chloë because he is aware that she knows about his infidelity. He doesn’t want to be the bad guy or accept the truth that he’s at fault for hurting the family unit or the dysfunctional relationships within the family unit.
Chloë has a secret, is angry at her mom for not doing anything about it, so she takes out her frustration at her dad on her family by lying and manipulating to get his attention and/or affection.
Kasey appears to be nonchalant about how the family unit functions but she is actually angry at all family members for not dealing with the slow, rising destruction of the family unit. She hides her vengeful desires by comforting and/or problem solving. In a way, she takes on the role as the mother.
What I learned from this assignment is to dig deeper into why my characters have a purpose in each other’s lives and the tragic event that happens at the end is a life lesson on how to function as a real family.

Big tree outside Chloë’s window
-It’s under this tree where Chloë, as a little girl, caught her Dad kissing another woman.
This tree grows outside her bedroom window and it is now taller that the house. She uses it to climb down when she sneaks out of the house to spy on her boyfriend and plan her next scare tactic on him.
Dad’s (sports) car
-Chloë believes she’s supposed to inherit it because she’s the oldest and presumably Dad’s favorite. But he wills it to her brother. Accidents happen in this car, one that eventually kills the Dad. She also sees this car in conspicuous places because he’s the only one, in their community of friends and family, that can afford this custom made sports car.
What I learned doing this assignment was various ways to broaden my imagination to have my characters actually go outside their box in the world I created for them.

Kasey is summoned by her older sister, Chloë to plot out vengeance against her cheating boyfriend. They first tamper with his car to cause him to have an accident.
Various attempts are done by the older sister which makes Kasey thinks her sister is really trying to kill him or someone else…..their mother maybe…..and make it look like an accident.
Kasey tries to tell the father of what Chloë is doing but as usual he doesn’t listen to her; instead, accuses her each time the mother gets involved in an accident.
Disgruntled and scared, Kasey chooses to not go along with her sister and the last plan to use the tampered car which didn’t work at the beginning, but finally convinces the father and they together go they go in the mother’s car to try and stop the accident.
The father pushes Kasey out of the car when he realizes the brakes are out and he ends up crashing the car, killing himself which was Chloë’s plan all along. She had watch her Father cheat on their mother since she was a little girl.
What I learned from this assignment was in order to understand the story I want to tell, I have to narrow the plot down and focus on the one goal or purpose of the main character. From there I was able to point out not just the subtext of the main character but the many subtexts throughout the story that moved the story along smoothly. I found a flow of writing that I think will work from the beginning of the story to the very end to keep the story interesting and intriguing.
