Mark Lederkramer Binge Worthy TV Boot Camp Module 2 Lesson 2 Character Descriptions

I learned from this assignment that all the work I had done in Module 1 could be laid out for character descriptions. The step-by-step technique really worked for me. It’s making me rethink and make my characters even better

    “Smuggle”

    Micky Levine

. Role in the show: he is the voice over and a key member of the Big 3 crew

Noteworthy Traits: superior intellect, loyal, resourceful, acting ability

Intriguing History: Micky has always been a law- abiding regular guy. He swore his whole life that he would not follow in his father’s criminal foot -steps with the Mafia

Intrigue? Will Micky be able to succeed as a criminal without going to jail or getting killed

Mystery? Will Micky eventually get away from the Big 3 crew

Drive Conflict: Micky has to deal with Matty and his over indulgences, Stuey and his nasty attitude, and ultimately helping the crew complete the Columbian trip and make a boat load of cash

Irony: After swearing his whole life that he would never follow in his father’s criminal foot-steps, Micky is now is now a drug smuggler and dealer as well as being involved with the Mafia just as his father was for his whole life

Opposing Agendas: Micky is mostly involved so that he and Howie can make a lot of money. Although he needs the Columbian trip to succeed his allegiance to the Big 3 is not as strong as his partnership with Howie

Unpredictable: Micky has several aliases and is the get anything done guy for the crew. On any given day he could be Micky in New York and the next day be Sal in Miami

Intriguing relationships: Micky relationships with all the main characters are different and intriguing

START: Micky is an intelligent regular guy from the neighborhood who decides to go to work for a marijuana smuggling and dealing crew

MIDDLE: Micky has become a very important member of the Big 3 crew. All three of his bosses confide in him and ask for his advice when they need to. When they need the impossible done, Micky is the go to guy. The Columbian trip will not be successful without his involvement

ENDING: Ultimately Micky wants to leave the crew after the Columbian trip but he knows that the big pay day could change his mind

    CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: MICKY

Micky is a law-abiding regular guy from the neighborhood who gets recruited by his friend, Matty, and goes to work for one of the best Marijuana smuggling and dealing crew. The crew hires him for his intelligence, acting, and leadership capabilities. He quickly become a vital cog in the crew’s operations. He finds out quickly that the Big 3 crew has partnered with the Torrio Mafia murder crew, which makes him very worried

    Matty Klienman

Role in the show: Matty is the most important partner in the Big 3 Crew.

Noteworthy Traits: He is the person that goes to all the foreign countries, Columbia, Mexico, Lebanon. He speaks fluent Spanish. He is the real smuggler in the crew

Intriguing history: Matty was born with the “Jewish” money gene. When he was ten, he was already earning money working at his family’s bagel shop. When he was thirteen, he started selling bootleg t-shirts and cassette concert tapes at Madison Square Garden and other rock venues around New York. He then started scalping tickets for both sports events and rock concerts. After smoking his first joint, he realized that he could make more money selling weed and have more fun doing it

Intrigue? Will Matty ever find out that it was actually his partners, Stuey and Tony, who broke into his apartment and beat and ripped him off

Mystery? Will the Columbian trip be a success

Drive conflict: Matty is partying way too much with Cocaine, Qualudes, Weed, Booze, and hookers. Even worse is that he is doing most of this with Jonny Naps, the most dangerous murderer in the Mafia

Irony: Matty only took on partners for protection after he was robbed and beaten in a break in at his apartment. The irony is that it was his partners, Stuey and Tony, who staged the rip off to scare Matty into their partnership

Opposing Agendas: Matty is still partners with Stuey and Tony, but he is very unhappy with how Stuey talks to him. He feels he is treated like an employee and not the real reason that the Big 3 are so successful. He would like to break up the partnership but he’s scared of Stuey

Unpredictable? Because of all the partying he is doing, Matty is totally unpredictable. He could be flying on Cocaine or passing out on Qualudes

Intriguing Relationships: Matty has intriguing and different relationships with all the important characters

START: Matty as a kid is awkward in looks and actions. He doesn’t have friends but he tries to buy friends with weed and other drugs. Micky is one of Matty’s only real friends. He genuinely likes him and he tries to look out for Matty. Matty is an idiot savant when it comes to selling illegal goods. When he discovers weed, he immediately knows that his life will be changing. After dealing locally, he decided to fly to San Diego. He ended up bringing sixty kilos of Acapulco Gold across the border in two suitcases. This was the start of his transition from Marijuana dealer to Marijuana smuggler

MIDDLE: Matty is now a full- fledged successful drug smuggler and dealer. He’s big time in New York and the whole East Coast. It’s at this time that Stuey comes up with his plan to convince Matty to become partners with he and Tony. The plan was simple! Tony would start hanging out and partying with Matty almost every night. While they got high and fucked call girls at Matty’s apartment, Tony was planting the idea that Matty needed partners for protection. The final part of the plan was a staged break-in and rip off at Matty’s apartment. Stuey makes sure to make a strong impression by hitting Matty in the face with his rifle butt.

ENDING: Matty is a master smuggler and dealer. Now that he has Micky working with him, he is trying to figure out a safe way to split from Stuey and Tony. He has also spent a lot of time befriending Johnny Naps and the rest of the Torrio crew. His thinking is that if he wants to split from the Big 3 crew, he would still need physical protection. Nobody fucks with the Torrio’s!

    CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: Matty

Matty is a master smuggler and drug dealer. To look at him you would believe that to be a total impossibility. He is six feet tall with a huge Jewfro and the thickest glasses that you could imagine. He is fluent in Spanish which is part of the reason for his success. He is like an idiot savant when it comes to smuggling and dealing weed. The truth is that Matty is so much smarter than people give him credit for. He is not happy with his current partnership, but he knows that he can’t make any changes until the Columbian trip is a success and he secures new source of protection.

    Stuey Issacson

Role in the show: Stuey is the leader of the Big 3 crew

Noteworthy Traits: Decisive leader, tough guy, over confident, thinks that he is always the smartest guy in the room

Intriguing history: Stuey and Tony have been best friends since the 2nd grade. They met Matty and Micky in junior high school. Matty liked Tony and hung out and partied with him. He didn’t know Stuey that well and he didn’t want to. Stuey sees how successful Matty is as a dealer and smuggler and he is jealous. He makes a plan with Tony to stage the break-in at Matty’s apartment. Tony had made Stuey promise that there would be no violence and that Matty would not be hurt. Stuey agreed but knew for his plan to succeed he needed to bust Matty up.

Intrigue? Will Matty ever find out what Stuey and Tony did to him

Mystery? Will the Columbian trip be a success and if so what will it mean for the Big 3 crew and their relationship with the Torrio crew

Drive conflict: Being the final decision maker means that there is constant conflict in Stuey’s life. He is constantly upset with Matty because of all of his partying. Of course, the biggest conflict is the Columbian trip and all of its challenges

Irony: Stuey is Jewish but acts like and wishes he was Italian

Opposing Agendas: Stuey is only interested in making more and more money and becoming more involved with the Mafia. Matty wants to make money but still have fun and party while doing it. In the beginning Matty doesn’t like the fact that Stuey approached the Torrio’s without even telling him or discussing it with him

Unpredictable: Because he has a bad temper and thinks that he is the smartest guy in the universe, Stuey, will make rash and sometimes violent decisions that are huge mistakes

Intriguing Relationships: Stuey has intriguing relationships with his partners, Matty and Tony, as well as Micky and most notably Jackie Torrio and his crew

START: Stuey is a wannabe tough guy and small- time drug dealer who scams Matty into a very lucrative partnership with Tony and himself

MIDDLE: Traits Stuey is now the unquestioned leader of the Big 3 smuggling and dealing crew in Brooklyn, New York. He has become more violent and ruthless as the years pass. He has made a huge move by partnering with the Torrio crew. This is one of those decisions he makes that will lead to real trouble for the Big 3 crew

ENDING: Stuey has started to question why he approached the Torrio’s in the first place. He is now worried that Jackie Torrio will decide that he wants a bigger percentage on the business that the Big 3 bring in or even worse just look to cut him out altogether

    CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: Stuey

Stuey is the leader of the Big 3 crew. He is built like a brick shit house. He is ruthless, conniving and very violent. He has little or no respect for Matty even though he is only a success because of scamming Matty into a partnership. His word is always the final word and his decisions are law. This is a problem because Stuey isn’t half as smart as he thinks he is and he makes a lot of bad decisions for the crew. The worst being partnering with the murderous Torrio crew. They are the newest version of Murder Incorporated for the Mafia

    Tony Fortunado

Role: Tony is the third partner of the Big 3 crew

Noteworthy Traits: Likeability, calm, handsome, charismatic

Intriguing History: Tony has been best friends with Stuey since 2nd grade. They did small time crime and weed and coke dealing. Tony has been friends with Matty since junior high school.

Intrigue? Tony sets up Matty and stages the break-in and rip off at his apartment even though they were supposed to be friends. It may have been Stuey’s plan but it was Tony who betrayed Matty

Mystery? Will the Columbian trip be a success? Will Matty find out that Tony and Stuey scammed him into their partnership?

Drive Conflict: Tony is constantly having to deal with both Matty’s partying and flakiness as well as Stuey’s violent tendencies. He also is the only Italian in the partnership

Irony: Tony never really wanted to be involved with the Mafia and now because of Stuey, he is in a partnership with the most murderous Mafia crew in New York

Opposing Agendas: Tony doesn’t agree with how Stuey speaks down to both himself and Matty. He also is not as greedy as Stuey. He just wants to be able to enjoy his money and not end up in jail or dead

Unpredictable? Sometimes Tony disagrees with Stuey’s decisions for the crew. When he gets pissed-off, he ends up going missing for a day. Usually that means that he has either picked up a new girl or is with a high-end escort and is fucking their brains out and getting wacked out on coke

Intriguing relationships: Tony has intriguing relationships with Matty, Stuey, Micky, the Torrio crew and his wife

START: Tony starts out as a likeable guy from the neighborhood but he then becomes partners with Stuey and he starts becoming more like him as they do crimes and deal drugs together

MIDDLE: Traits. Tony is a real ladies’ man. Tony is the guy that every woman wants to fuck and every man wants to be friends with. He is also good at mediating between Stuey and Matty. He is now a partner in the most successful Marijuana smuggling and dealing crew in New York

ENDING: Tony is like both of his partners, stressed out because things with the Columbian trip have not been going smoothly. He is also fed up of having to play good cop to Stuey’s bad cop with Matty. He just wants to live to enjoy all the money that he and his partners have made

    CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: Tony

Tony is the 3rd partner of the Big 3 crew. He is the most liked of the partners. He is a very handsome and charming man. Tony is the guy that every woman wants to fuck and every man wants to be friends with. He has the gift of gab and great charisma. He and Stuey have scammed Matty into a partnership and now they are all rich. Tony is the only Italian of the partnership which is important in dealing with their Mafia partners

    Howie Schwartz

Role in the show: Howie is Micky’s best friend and dealing partner.

Noteworthy Traits: Great Marijuana dealer, confident, lucky, smart, funny, impish, spiritual, loyal, schemer, fearless

Intriguing history: Howie grew up in an upper middleclass family in Mill Basin. His older brother, Arnie, is a drug dealer who deals in pot, hash, coke, and acid. Howie has followed in his footsteps. Howie and Micky have been best friends since high school. They knew as soon as they met that they were going to be great friends. Howie has sold pot since he was thirteen, but he doesn’t smoke pot. He has been a vegetarian since he was fourteen

Intrigue? How will his dealing partnership with Micky work out and will Micky’s high position with the Big 3 crew lead to them both getting wealthy

Mystery? Will the Columbian trip succeed and will Micky be able to stay healthy while working for the crew

Drive conflict: The day-to-day work of buying and selling weed and hash. Howie worries about what Micky is doing from day to day for the crew

Irony: Micky met Howie when one of his friends, Ryan, asked him to wait in the car while he picked up weed from a friend. Ryan said that he didn’t think that Micky would like Howie because he was so different. Micky didn’t want to go in anyway. Then while he was sitting in the car, Howie knocked on the window and when I opened the window, he introduced himself. We immediately started talking about the Yankees and baseball and that was the start of a great friendship which turned into a great partnership

Opposing Agendas: Howie wants to make a lot of money but he is hoping that he and Micky make it ASAP so that Micky might be able to break away from the crew

Unpredictable? Howie is a hippy at heart so he isn’t as punctual or as careful as Micky would like him to be. He loves to eat and breakfast in China Town was normal for Howie and Micky

Intriguing Relationships: Howie’s relationship to Micky, Matty, Stuey, Tony, and his dealing clients

START: Howie is a small-time dealer who grew up in an upper middle -class family. He has followed in his older brother’s foot steps into the drug dealing business. He has been dealing since he was thirteen. When he meets Micky things start to change

MIDDLE: Traits. Howie and Micky have become partners in what they jokingly call “Wheels & Deals”. Micky has gone to work for the Big 3 crew and because of how dangerous his situation is, Howie is becoming more reliable and punctual

ENDING: Howie has put in a lot of work and money into the partnership with Micky. Although they split expenses, Howie has earned most of the money and is really getting antsy about when the Columbian trip will arrive so Micky can contribute to the partnership

    CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: Howie

Howie is Micky’s best friend and dealing partner. He is a spiritual hippy and he and Micky are an odd couple. He is a follower of the Maharaji, a teenage Guru from India. Micky calls him, “The Greasy Fat Kid”. Howie has been selling weed since he was thirteen and is really good at it

    1. Present your Concept

Based on a true story, “Smuggle” will show you how a regular guy goes to work for three friends, and becomes involved with Marijuana smuggling, dealing, and the most murderous crew in the history of the Mafia in New York in the 1970’s and 1980’s

    B. Micky has to navigate a new criminal life involving smuggling, dealing, and murder

    C. Average guy to drug smuggler and dealer

    2. Tell us the World of this show.

    • Unique Sub-World: The underbelly of smuggling, drug dealing and murder in New York in the 1970’s and 1980’s

    • Previously unexplored: Nobody has ever truly told the story of how Marijuana and Hash were smuggled into the US

    • The unknown: Will the Columbian trip work and what obstacles will arise

    • The unseen: The police and how much they know and what they are doing to learn more

    • Unheard of Dangers: Police, DEA, other smugglers and dealers. Arrest or even death

    • Reason to explore it: Based on true story. We used to joke and called it, “The Greatest Story Never Told”. Now the story will finally be told by Micky as the narrator of the show

Mark Lederkramer Binge Worthy TV Module 1 Lesson 11 Discovering Irony Assignments 1 and 2

    .

    Assignment 2

    My Show

    Irony in the Plot

    1) Micky has sworn his whole life to never get involved with the Mafia and now after thinking he was going to work for the Big 3 crew he finds out they have partnered with the real Mafia

    2) Stuey goes voluntarily to see Jackie Torrio and tries to give him $50,000 as a tribute for the last trip from Columbia, even though he had no investment I it. Stuey wanted the Torrio Crew to be their friends and allies. Jackie refuses the cash and says that instead he wants to be partners in the new trip. Stuey knows that he can’t say no to Jackie. People who say no to Jackie have a tendency of ending up in trash bags in small pieces

    3) Matty becomes partners with Stuey and Tony for protection after he is ripped off and beaten in a break in at his apartment. Truth is that it was Stuey and Tony who robbed and beat him. This was the final step in Stuey’s plan to get Matty to become their partner

    4) Micky realizes quickly that his responsibilities for the crew are much scarier than he thought. Starting with creating two alternate identities complete with Drivers Licenses, birth certificates, and Social Security cards.

    5) Tony had been friends with Matty since public school, and yet he helps Stuey scam Matty into becoming their partner by robbing and beating him in a staged rip off.

    6) Stuey made the plan to rip off Matty and then he gets ripped off by another smuggler.

    7) Howie sells over 200 kilos of Lebanese hashish that he was able to get fronted by a local dealer because they had been so damaged in an accident that they seemed unsellable. Howie spent hours and hours cleaning and trimming the bad parts of the Hash. He makes $150,000 in profit for Micky and himself to split. Then Micky finds out that the Hash was actually owned by the crew. This makes him really angry because Stuey promised him first access to all product as a way for Micky to make money on top of his salary. Howie and he did all the work and we would have made more than twice as much if Stuey had kept his word.

    Character Irony

    1) Stuey, Matty, and Tony hired Micky for his brains but none of them listen to him

    2. Micky never really liked or trusted Stuey but now he is at his beck and call

    3. Tony has always been best friends with Stuey but he is starting to resent him and his control of the crew.

    4) Tony went along with Stuey’s plan to rip off Matty and it made him and Stuey wealthy. Tony has a lot of guilt about it so he tends to avoid hanging out with just Matty.

    5) Stuey, Tony, and Jackie expect Micky to keep Matty on the straight and narrow but the truth is that Micky is having less and less influence on Matty

    6) Howie is getting resentful of Micky because he feels he is doing all the work of bringing in money for ‘Wheels and Deals”

Mark Lederkramer Binge Worthy TV Plot and Character Layers Module 1 Lesson 10 Assignment 2

What I learned from this lesson and exercise is that I must create lots of different Plot and Character layers as this will create tension and drama so as to keep the viewer wanting more all through the series. It also creates real interesting characters with real day to day relationships and issues to deal with.

    My Show

    Plot surface

The Big 3 Crew is a very successful Marijuana smuggling and dealing gang in Brooklyn, New York in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The crew all grew up in the same neighborhood and the three partners have become very rich. Micky has recently joined the crew and has become a vital member. When the bosses need the impossible taken care of, they have Micky do it. The Big 3 crew is working on their next smuggling trip for weed from Columbia.

Layer 1 Sabotage: Matty is the most important member of the crew since he’s the one that travels to Columbia to make the huge purchase of Marijuana. He is snorting way too much cocaine and taking way too many Qualudes. He’s also spending way too much time fucking hookers and call girls.

Layer 2 Conspiracy: Stuey and Tony actually stage a break in at Matty’s old apartment. They robbed him and Stuey hit him with the butt of his rifle. This was all part of Stuey’s plan to convince Matty that he needed to have him and Tony as partners for his own protection.

Layer 3 Mystery: Will the Columbian trip come together and be a success. How will Micky deal with the fact that he is now connected to the real Mafia in the Torrio crew. Will Matty find out that his partners staged the break in? Will the two crews get along or will there be problems between them.

Layer 4 Hidden agenda: Stuey is always figuring out ways to make more money than his partners. Matty really wants to break up the partnership as he hates the way Stuey treats him. Jackie Torrio plans to get more money out of the trip than he was promised. Micky is hoping he can get out of the Big 3 crew after the Columbian trip. Tony wants more power within the partnership.

Layer 5 Future consequences: The trip could fail because of Stuey’s ego. Any of the crew could be arrested or killed. Matty could fuck up everything and end up in either a Columbian or American jail. Stuey might short change Micky after all his hard work. Jackie could decide that any of the crew is expendable as he and his crew are the second coming of Murder Incorporated.

    Character surface

Micky is the newest member of the Big 3 crew. He is very intelligent and he can handle anything that the bosses might throw at him. He is much smarter than his bosses but they know the smuggling and dealing business inside out. Micky is a quick learner but this is all a new world to him.

Layer 1 Hidden agenda: Micky is really unhappy with the fact that he is now involved with the real Mafia and especially because it is the murderous, Torrio Crew.

Layer 2 Hidden character history: The whole reason Micky went to work for the crew is to make a lot of money for him and his partner, Howie. Part of his work deal is that he will get fronted the first and best product from the Columbian trip. Micky has always been a great salesman so he has always been able to get people to believe him and follow his lead.

Layer 3 Secret identity: Within the first month he has to create two alternate identities. This would involve getting forged birth certificates, Social Security numbers and cards. Then he had to walk these into the New York DMV and use them to get legitimate NY Drivers licenses. Just like that, Micky becomes, Salvatore “Sal” Feranzano and Jeffrey “JT” Thomas.

Layer 4 Wound: Micky hates that he has now become so involved with the real Mafia. This is not what he signed up for. He swore his whole life that he would never work for them as he watched his father spend his life working for “The Boys”, as a Jew. All it got him was trouble and no advancement because he wasn’t Italian

Layer 5 Competition: Micky is in an unspoken competition with his partner, Howie, to see who can bring in the most money for them to share. He is also dealing with competition from other crew members as they can’t figure out why he was brought in and given so much influence.

    Assignment 1

I learned there must be both long term and short time events and mysteries to keep the viewers engaged. Mysteries, secrets, and cover-ups will help create great story lines and move the show along and give it the Binge quality

    Mr. Robot

    Big Mysteries

    1) What’s real and what’s just a delusion in Elliot’s head

    2) What does Tyrell really want from Elliot and F Society

    3) What are Tyrell and his wife planning other than him getting the CTO job

    4) Who is Mr. Robot and how did he know about Elliot in the first place

    5) What is the Dark Army’s real involvement is going to be

    Small Mysteries:

    1) What is Angela’s real importance to the show and Elliot

    2) Will Gideon find out about Angela’s part in All Safe being hacked

    3) What happened between Elliot and Tyrell at the arcade

    4) Why did Darlene steal the gun from her hook up

    5) How did Wellick and Mr. Robot end up together in Wellick’s limo

    Assignment 2 My Show

    Shocking Event Mystery:

Shocking event: Micky finds out that some how the Torrio crew are now partners in the Columbian deal

Secret: Matty knew about the Torrio Crew’s involvement but he purposely didn’t tell Micky because he knew Micky wouldn’t join the Big 3 crew if he knew

Investigation: Micky senses something is not kosher with the Big 3 crew. He knows that the bosses are hiding something from him. He ultimately pushes Matty to tell him, and although Micky is upset, he knows that now he has really gotten himself into a really bad and dangerous situation.

What: The Big 3 have made an alliance with the murderous Torrio Crew.

When: Stuey had made a deal with Jackie Torrio three months before Matty recruited Micky into the crew

Where: The alliance was agreed on at the Aquarius Bar

Why: Stuey originally just wanted to give Jackie a tribute so as to be on the Torrio’s good side.

Part Withheld: Micky doesn’t know that the Torrio’s have become full partners in the Columbian trip

    Over Time Mystery:

Cover up: Stuey and Tony seem to be keeping something important from Matty and Micky

Secret: Stuey and Tony had staged a break-in and robbery of Matty to scare him into a partnership

Reveals: Micky figures out over time that Matty had been screwed into an unnecessary partnership

What : The rip off that led to the Big 3 partnership

Who: Stuey and Tony ripped off Matty

When: Two years prior to Micky joining the crew

Why: Stuey knew that Matty could make him and Tony rich

How: Tony was friends with Matty and he kept telling him that he needed muscle for protection. This was all Stuey’s idea. After months of setting Matty up, they staged a break in and robbery at Matty’s apartment. Stuey actually cracked Matty in the head with the butt of his shotgun. The plan worked as the first call that Matty makes after the robbery is to Tony. This leads to the birth of the Big 3 crew.

Mark Lederkramer Module 1 Lesson 7 Assignment #1

What I learned doing this assignment is creating empathy or distress for characters will cause the audience to care and identify with the characters. This will cause the viewers to form a real bond with the characters. The viewer becomes very invested in what happens to the characters and this will make the show Binge Worthy

    Mr. Robot-Empathy/Distress

    A. Undeserved misfortune. Shayla is murdered because of Elliot hacking Vera her drug dealer and putting him in jail

    B. External Character conflicts. Intentional: Angela hates Colby and Evil Corp yet she is making a deal with him so he will testify that E Corp was responsible for the Washington Township waste scandal even though it means that Colby will go free.

Unintentional: Angela will put everybody at All Safe out of work and lose Gideon as a friend and mentor

    C. Plot intruding on life: Tyrell Wellick kills his rival, Simon Knowles wife when he was just supposed to fuck her and take pictures to use for blackmail

    D. Moral dilemmas. Elliot is dropped as a patient by Krista so he decides to come back and hurt her by telling her everything he knows about her because he has been hacking her all along.

    E. Forced decisions they’d never make: Angela uses her friend email account to try and reach and set up a meeting with the Dark Army and their leader White Rose

    Module 1 Lesson 7 Assignment #2

    My Show-Empathy/Distress

    A. Undeserved misfortune: Micky thought he was getting involved with people he knew who were in the marijuana and Hashish smuggling and dealing business. He ends up being involved with the real Mafia in the Torrio Crew

    B. External Character conflicts: Matty is pissing off everybody because of his excessive drug use and partying especially Stuey. Unintentional: Matty’s behavior is making Micky frustrated and making his job harder and more dangerous

    C. Plot intruding on life: When Stuey and Tony rip off and beat Matty it really starts the Big 3 Crew and changes all their lives.

    D. Moral dilemmas: Stuey, Tony, and the Torrio crew all want Micky to report to them (spy) about Matty’s behavior but Micky is loyal to Matty. The problem is that they are right to be worried and Micky is even more worried than anybody.

    E. Forced decisions they’d never make: Micky swore his whole life that he would never get involved with the Mafia, as he watched his father deal with being a Jew and working for the mob and never really having the chance to rise in the crew. He unfortunately is now involved with the most murderous Mafia crew in history

Mark Lederkramer Intriguing Character Layers Module 1 Lesson 4 assignment 2

    1) Michael “Micky/Pockets” Levine

    Role

Micky is the regular guy that joins a marijuana smuggling and dealing crew in Brooklyn, New York, then he finds out that he is involved with the most dangerous Mafia murder crew in the world. Micky becomes the go to guy to get things done for the Big 3 crew. He will be the voice over helping to tell the story

    Hidden Agendas

Micky is really unhappy at being involved with the real Mafia. His main concern is making a boatload of money for him and his partner Howie. He’s hoping to help the Big 3 complete the Columbian trip so as to get a big cash bonus and lots of weed for Howie to deal for the both of them

    Competition

Although he loves and is totally loyal to his partner, he feels that he must bring in more money than Howie

    Secrets

His whole life is a secret now! His family knows that he is up to something but they don’t know what. He is also having to keep all his friends in the dark. He has been instructed to report(rat) on Matty if he’s partying too much. The big secret is that he will never rat on Matty because that is where his loyalty lies.

    Deception

Micky whole life has become deception. On any given day he could be one of three different people depending on who he has to see or deal with that day

    Wound

Micky is really not cut out for a life of crime. In fact, he swore is whole life to never get involved with the Mafia. He watched his father work for as he called them, The Boys for his whole life. He saw that a Jew could never go very far with the Mafia.

    Secret Identities

In the first month working for the Big 3 he is tasked with creating two different identities complete with drivers licenses and Social Security cards.

    2) Mathew “Matty/Mateo” Klienman

    Role

Matty is the most important person in the whole Big 3 Crew. He is the person that goes to all the foreign countries, Columbia, Mexico, Lebanon. He is the real smuggler in the crew. He deals with growers in Columbia and Mexico. He deals with the military in Lebanon. He is also the person with all the connections to move any amount of product

Matty is the most important member of the Big 3 Crew. He is an idiot savant when it comes to smuggling and dealing. He is the one that actually travels to make the buys in Columbia, Mexico, and Lebanon.

    Hidden Agendas

Matty wants to break away from the Big 3. He hates the way Stuey treats him. He also is always trying to keep the partners unaware of how much Cocaine he was buying and snorting while partying with hookers almost every night

    Competition

He is in competition with other smugglers and dealers in New York and Florida. He is in competition with himself as he wants to constantly surpass the amount of product he smuggles and sells for the Big 3. He is in competition with Stuey because Stuey thinks he is always right and Matty knows that Stuey is not really knowledgeable about the smuggling side of the business.

    Secrets

Matty is snorting way too much cocaine and fucking too many hookers. He is also partying too much with Johnny Naps who is the most vicious killer in the Torrio Crew. He’s also taking too many risks in Columbia just like in New York, too much Coke and too many hookers. The difference is that most of the Columbian hookers were underage.

    Deception

Matty has many different personas. In Brooklyn he is Matty. In Columbia he is Mateo. He also has to tell lies and embellish the truth all the time

    Wound

Matty has always had an inferiority complex. He was picked on as a kid because of his weird looks and behavior. His family life was really fucked up. It doesn’t help that Stuey talks to him like he is a moron and a subordinate instead of the most important person in the Big 3 Crew.

    Secret Identities

    Matty, Mateo, Javier, Jack Clark

    3) Stuart”Stuey” Issacson

    Role

Stuey is the tough leader of the Big 3 smuggling and dealing crew. He is the final decision

    maker for the crew.

    Competition

Stuey as the leader of the Big 3 is in competition with all the other dealers and smugglers in New York. He’s also in competition with Matty as he feels that he is more important to the crew than Matty.

    Secrets

The biggest secret is that Stuey and Tony scammed Matty into partnering with them for protection by staging a break in and robbery at Matty’s apartment. During that break in Stuey hits Matty in the stomach with the butt of his rifle. He then kicks him in the face so as to make sure that Matty would be terrified. This way Matty would run to Tony for protection.

    Deception

Stuey is deceiving everybody including himself. He acts like this tough scary guy. Truth is that he is only tough because of the people who stand behind him and the guns he carries. He’s deceiving Matty by saying that he is loyal to him.

    Wound

Stuey wants to really be Italian not Jewish. He knows as a Jew he could never become a made man by the Mafia

    4) Anthony”Tony” Fortunado

    Role

He is the third partner of the Big 3 crew. He is the crews only Italian. He is handsome and very smooth. Everybody loves Tony.

    Hidden Agendas

Tony is always defending Matty from Stuey. He doesn’t like the way Stuey speaks to Matty or himself. Tony was friends with Matty before Stuey talked him into staging a break in and robbery at Matty’s house. That’s how they got Matty to partner with them

    Competition

He feels that he is always in a competition with both Stuey and Matty to prove his value

    Secrets

Tony is making sure that Matty knows that he is still a close friend and not just a partner. In the back of his head as much as he loves Stuey, he wants to make sure that if he wants to split with him, that Matty will stay with him. Matty is the key to all of the Big 3’s wealth and profits

    Deception

He is deceiving Matty about actually being a real friend. He is deceiving Stuey by acting happier than he is with the partnership. Tony is also making it a point to get tight with the Torrio crew

    5) Howard “Howie” Schwartz

    Role

Howie is Micky’s best friend and partner in their dealing business, “Wheels & Deals”

    Hidden Agendas

Howie is always scheming and scamming about ways for him to generate income outside of Micky’s involvement with the Big 3 crew.

    Competition

He is in competition with other dealers in New York

    Secrets

Howie’s whole life is a secret from his friends and family and most of the world

    Deception

See secrets above again his life is all deception

    Module 1 Lesson 3 Assignment 1

My Binge Worthy TV show is Mr. Robot.

    What I learned:

I felt that I knew this show as I used to watch it. I saw so many different layers of the story. The characters are so distinct and yet I know that there is so much more I want to know about them. I also saw how leaving what seems like a cliff hanger every episode is so important

    Outline

    1) Introduced to main character Elliot. We find out that he is an introverted vigilante hacker as he rats out a child pornographer

    2) We see Elliot on subway going to work where he sees Mr. Robot for the first time. He is very paranoid and feels that he is being followed all the time. Elliot works for a computer security firm called All Safe. We meet an important character, Angela, who is his one real friend since childhood and Gideon his boss.

    3) Elliot meets with his court ordered psychologist, Krista. We find out that Elliot is totally anti-establishment. He refers to the biggest conglomerate, E Corp as Evil Corp. He also really cares a lot about Krista

    4) E Corp introduced into story. In the conference room we meet CEO, Terry Colby and a mysterious executive, Tyrel Wellick, who seems very interested in Elliot.

    5) See Elliot in his apartment sitting in the corner crying hysterically. He then crushes up and snorts morphine. His dealer, Shayla, comes in and they take moly and end up fucking.

    6) Elliot follows Krista and her date Michael. He sees men in black watching him and then he sees Mr. Robot the guy from the subway for a second time. Elliot follows Michael and asks to use his phone to call his mom. This allows Elliot to clone Michaels phone

    7) Elliot gets call from Angela. She is panicking because there has been a massive hack of E Corps computer system. She knows that Elliot is the only person that can fix this situation.

    8) Elliot and Gideon fly on a private jet to Texas, where there is a server farm. Eliot fixes the problem but he has been left a secret message from the hacker called F Society. The request is for Elliot to leave the backdoor that has been established active. Elliot decides to leave the backdoor available but makes sure it can only be accessed by him.

    9) Mr. Robot takes Elliot to an abandoned arcade in Coney Island. This is the headquarters of F-Society. There are a few new characters (young hackers) but there is no info about them. Mr. Robot tells Elliot that he needs to help F-Society frame the hack of E Corp on its CEO Terry Colby

    10) Elliot takes subway from Coney Island wondering the whole time if Mr. Robot and F-Society are real or a figment of his imagination

    11) Elliot goes back to F-Society HQ and we are introduced to female hacker, Darlene. Mr. Robot takes Elliot on the Wonder Wheel Ferris wheel and while stopped at the top he pitches Elliot the big plan to hack E Corp with Elliot’s help. He says Elliot is the key to their success that he has to put the incriminating evidence into the hands of E Corp. The goal is still to bring down Evil Corp, starting with CEO Terry Colby by wiping out all the debt in the world especially all Student debt. Later that night Elliot checks on line and discovers that Angela owes almost $200,000 in student loans.

    12) Big meeting with at All Safe with Terry Colby and E Corp to discuss progress and facts about the hack. It is Elliot’s intention to turn in all his info about the hack which would hurt Mr. Robot and F-Society. Angela starts to give the details and Terry Colby is very dismissive of her. Elliot jumps in to help her which leads to Colby asking for Angela to be sent out of the meeting. When this happens Elliot gets pissed off and swaps the envelope with the real facts to the envelope that will incriminate Terry Colby.

    13) Elliot confronts Michael on the street and tells him that he knows all of his dirty secrets and that if he doesn’t want his wife to hear about them he must break up with Krista. He must also tell her the truth about the fact that he is a married, lying, and cheating skumbag. Lastly he tells Michael he needs something in payment so he takes Michaels dog, Flipper.

    14) While making up with Angela at All Safe, they notice everybody in the office staring at the TV. Elliot and Angela turn to see Terry Colby, CEO of ECorp being arrested and taken into custody.

    15) Elliot is all smiles as he walks around Times Square seeing all the feeds sending info and video of the Colby Arrest. Out of nowhere, two men in black force him into a black SUV.

    16) The men take Elliot out of the SUV and lead him into a high rise building in Manhattan. We see him walking into a boardroom. He realizes that it is ECorp’s boardroom when he sees Tyrel Wellick, the mysterious executive that he had met earlier at All Safe

    Big Picture Hooks

Will Eliot with the help of Mr. Robot and F-Society take down Ecorp or will they end up in prison

    Amazing and Intriguing Characters

    1) Elliot is obviously the main character. Right from the beginning you can tell that he is very unique and troubled person. Really can’t tell what he will do from moment to moment.

    2) Mr. Robot is the leader of F-Society. We don’t really know anything about his origin and if he is really trying to help Elliot or to mess him up.

    3) Angela is a by the book worker and Elliot’s oldest and best friend. During the Pilot she is very one level but you can tell that there is a lot more there

    4) Tyrel Welliver is an executive with Ecorp. The first time he comes into the story you can tell that he will be a very important character which is solidified when his are the last words of the Pilot “ Bon Suir, Elliot”

    Empathy/Distress

    1) I have empathy right from the beginning of the Pilot for Elliot as he obviously has mental issues and really has trouble getting by in the world that he lives in. You can’t tell if what he is seeing and saying is real or imagined

    2) You can tell that Angela wants more control at AllSafe and to be successful in her career. There is a lot going on with her that I want to know about. The empathy and distress in the pilot comes from her getting kicked off the Ecorp account and the frustration from trying to deal with Elliot’s issues

    3) From the first time Mr.Robot is introduced I want to know more about him. What is his real history. Is he really doing good or bad for mankind Is he just using Elliot or does he really have good intention

    4) I don’t really know much about Tyrel Wellick other then he seems to be the man in charge now that Colby is out of the picture. He is a very charismatic and knows that Elliot is special

    Layers and Open Loops

    1) What is going to happen to Elliot in the Ecorp Board room. What is going to happen to Elliot in general and how much of what he is doing and saying is real

    2) Will Elliot continue helping Ecorp or will he take them down

    3) When is Angela going to step up to herb potential

    Inviting Obsession

    1) Will Elliot continue to work for F-Society or go against them

    2) What is Tyrel Wellick plans for Elliot and ECorp

    3) Will Angela get with Eliot, even with his emotional issues

    4) What are Mr Robot real plans. What’s his history
