.Mary Ellevold -what I learned: will come back to this one.

Action accomplishes multiple purposes. It isn’t just lots of activity on the screen.

    Creates the adrenaline
    experience for the audience.
    Pits Hero against Villain (or
    the Villain’s representatives).
Makes a change for the story or
    Hero.
Gives us an insight into either
    the Hero or Villain.
    Is entertaining to watch.

Create a rough draft of your Action Track.

    1. Answer the Action Questions:ZOOPHOBIA

    A. Considering the concept from
Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie? Counter-conditioning, psych eval,
    animal attacks
    B. Considering the Mission and
Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track? VILLAIN AGAINST HERO, CRAZYMAKING
    C. How can the action start
well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act? START
WITH PSYCH EVAL, INDIV COUNSELING, GROUP THERAPY,COUNTER CONDITIONIN

    2. Select the types of action you’ll use.

    A. Chase/PursuitX
    B. Fight
    C. Shootout
    D. RescueX
    E. Escape/EvadeX

    NAME: MARY ELLEVOLD

“What I learned doing this assignment is…THAT THE ANTAGONIST FOLLOWS A SET AGENDA.

Subject line: (KATHERINE (KAT DEBOUGAR) Villain Track!

    Deadline: 2 Days

    Zoophobia, a comedy

    A. What might be the Villain’s plan to accomplish an evil outcome or to annihilate the hero? The plan could be pre-existing or created on the spot.

    a. Kat’s plan is to take over Jon’s animal control company because she wants revenge and needs the cats, rats, and other animals to experiment for her Pet Perfume. Pre-existing plan with creative plans.

    B. How many ways can the Villain attack or destroy the hero?

    a. She creates and gives Jon an animal soap that makes animals attack him.

    b. She traps him in a carwash so he can’t answer pet rescue calls.

    c. She encourages the Crazymaking.

    d. When he goes to counceling she sabatoges it.

    e. She takes him to court to gain temporary custody.

    C. What advantage does the Villain have and how can they exploit that in this movie?

    a. Kat has spies in their small town, and complete control of his friends and psychologists.

    b. She is brilliant and devious.

    c. She discredits his reputation.

    d. She is his childhood sweetheart, and knows his weaknesses.

    D. What would be a “fitting end” for this Villain where they pay for what they’ve done?

    a. She goes to jail, and has to do community service cleaning up after animals.

    b. Her cousin Bob gets her company.

“What I learned doing this assignment this is easier than I thought, and I am close to finishing my screenplay.”

    1. Ask the Mission Track questions to discover your Hero’s mission.

    A. What is it about this Hero
that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds? Jon wants to save the world, one pet at
    a time.
    B. What is the mission that
would be an impossible goal? He
must face his fear of animals while the animals are attacking him.
    C. What strong internal and external
motivation could drive the hero? Internal motivation = childhood dream. External motivation – he could lose his
job, his apartment, his gerbil, etc….
    D. Imagine that mission playing
out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this
mission against this villain? Jon goes to the Phobia Doctor to cure his
fear of animals, but it’s not a phobia if it’s real.

    2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.

Clear Mission: Jon Johnson must face his fear of animals to save his job.

Motivation: Jon must face his fears to save his
    job,his home, his pet gerbel….
    Inciting Incident: Birds poop
bomb his vehicle so bad he can’t get to his dog catcher job;which is
    rescueing a kitty in a tree…
    1st action: Jon’s arch enemy, his ex-childhood
sweetheart, Kat,places a secret basket at his door that makes animals go
    crazy.
    2nd Action:Kat convinces Jon the
animal attacks aren’t real, he has to go to phobia doctor to cure his
    fears…
    Obstacle:the phobia doctor is
on vacation, and the janitor picks
up the phone and decides to make some money.
    Escalation: the Group tries
    Virtuo-reality, and counter conditioning, but..
    Overwhelming Odds:Kat sabatoges
each one, and almost kills Jon in the process..
New Plan: Jon decides to face
    his fears.
    Full out Attack:animals attack,
but the real problem is revealed, and everything stops.
    Success: Jon has faced his
fears, Kat goes to jail, no more fear.

    MARY ELLEVOLD

WHAT I LEARNED: I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE MORALLY RIGHT OR WRONG, OR ANY OF THIS INFO.

Hero- the Advocate, Rosie Saldana; the villain – abusive partners

    Concept:

    Hero Morally Right: The
Advocate, Rosie Saldana, is fighting to stop the abuse and get women to
    safety.
    Villain Morally Wrong: The
abusers use many diabolical methods to control their victims.

    Hero

    A. Unique Skill Set- Educator
with the Power Wheel, community support, strategy and experience.
    B. Motivation-to save women and
children trapped in same situation she was in.
    C. Secret or Wound-she lost a
    child.

    Villain

    A. Unbeatable-the abusers
    control finances, homes, etc….
    B. Plan/Goal-to provide clients
with safe housing, jobs, financial & legal support
    C. What they lose if Hero
survives-their families, their pride when truth revealed what they’re
    doing

Impossible Mission-Rosie must provide resources, support, and education for many clients with different needs.

    A. Puts Hero in Action-Each
client is in crisis or danger.
    B. Demands They Go Beyond Their
Best: these women might not survive if they go back.
    C. Destroy the Villain- by
empowering women to face the truth

What I learned doing this assignment: This assignment helped me realize that my antagonist is a much stronger character than my hero in my comedy, switching to action movie idea.

    2. Brainstorm your concept and tell us the concept and conventions.

Concept:An advocate in a safehouse attempts to rescue women in crisis.

    Conventions:

Hero: An educated safehouse director who came from a violent background.

Mission: To ensure women clients and their children find safety physically, emotionally, financially and legally before their 30 day residence ends and abusive partners harm them.

Demand for Action: If she doesn’t provide shelter, violence will escalate and the families will pay the price.

Antagonist: Client’s abusive partners try to get their women back.

Escalating Action: The advocate tries to meet needs and rescue clients in a high-risk situation.

What I learned doing this assignment is…I have several turning point scenes to choose from:

INT. PSYCH OFFICE – 2ND FLOOR

Jon moves past the receptionist desk and sees the office. The door is ajar. Ignoring the sign, he pushes on the door and slips into the room.

    JON

    Hello? Hello? Anybody here?

It is dark. He hears a low growl, a hiss, it is a white Persian cat, PHOEBE. There is a primeval scream as the attack cat leaps off a file cabinet and onto his backpack. Jon screams, and runs in circles, trying to dislodge the cat, who is swiping her claws at Gerbie while scratching and biting Jon.

Jon is mawled. After a battle, he dislodges the cat. Gerbie is barely hanging on, swinging back and forth with the backpack as Jon runs out the door.

Subject line: (Mary Ellevold’s) Inciting Incident (place in first line)

What I learned doing this assignment is…outlining first, and add a reaction.

EXT. STREET – SMALL TOWN, USA

An ordinary day. Bright sun. An ordinary Mid-western street. Older homes, lots of trees, children playing down the street.

In the parking lot sits a red Monster truck wanna be, an old truck jacked up but is crooked. It leans to one side and is emblazened with the hand written words ‘D.O.A. – DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS – CAROL COUNTY”. There is a cage, along with lots of litter in the back.

Jon places his backpack on the seat. A little bird hops up to Jon. He steps over it, and it hops after him. He places a bird soap on the antenna, and gets in the truck.

The sky darkens, birds are gathering on the wire near his truck. More and more birds cluster on the wire, until the wire is thick with birds.

Birds poop bomb the car. Starts slowly, until hundreds of birds overhead. Plop-plop-plop. Jon is pushing the window wipers, faster and faster. The bird poop sprays the windshield, the wipers smearing the gooey mess all over the window.

Jon attempts to start the truck. It is slow starting and the radio goes off and on. There is a message.

    RADIO SPEAKER

    You! Are under God’s wrath.

    JON

    (screams)

    Aaahhh.

Jon shuts off radio, tries again and again to start the vehicle, which stalls.

Windshield wipers continue to smear bird bombs across windshield until water stops working.

Finally, the truck starts, staggering forward. Too late. The vehicle is smeared from top to bottom with bird bombs. Jon has his head out window as he tries to drive while talking on the car phone.

    EXT. JON’S APARTMENT – DAY

One. Two. Three black birds descend onto a telephone wire. Ominous music.

A woman in black, (KAT) KATHERINE DEBOUGAR, (28), slinks along a building wall. Kat is slightly overweight and stuffed into a black cat suit, with high, glossy black boots and a black mask. She is hiding an object behind her back. Sliding along the outside building wall toward the door, she looks right, then left. She breaks the door lock and enters.

    INT. JON’S APARTMENT – DAY

JON JOHNSON hears the doorbell. He is 28, an almost ordinary man. He is dressed in a wrinkled blue outfit with an official DOG CATCHER badge on the pocket. His hair is disheveled. On the counter is a blue baseball hat. He wears old work boots.

    ASSIGNMENT5

Subject line: (Mary Ellevold) 4 Act Transformational Structure Lesson 5

What I learned was that it was fairly easy once I started.

Create a first draft of your 4 Act Transformational Structure.

    1. Give us the following:

Concept AN UNEMPLOYED DOGCATCHER, JON JOHNSON, MUST FACE HIS FEARS TO GET HIS JOB BACK.

Main Conflict -HIS EX CHILDHOOD SWEET HEART, KAT, SABATOGES HIM.

Old ways – fearful, going from disaster to disaster, not wanting to put out effort, Kat and others dominate him

New ways -couregeous, faces Kat and rescues Bob

    2. Fill in each of these with the answers you have right now.

    Act 1:

Opening-BIRDS ON A WIRE. KAT IN A KAT SUIT SNEAKS INTO JON’S
    APARTMENT AND LEAVES A BASKET.

Inciting Incident- BIRDS POOP BOMB THE CAR, HE GETS
    STUCK IN CARWASH

Turning Point-CAT ATTACK AT PHOBIA DOCTOR’S

    Act 2:

New plan-GROUP THERAPY INCLUDES KAT; AND
PLAN-HE MUST FACE HIS FEAR OF ANIMALS – ZOOPHOBIA
Plan in action-VIRTUOREALITY, AND COUNTER CONDITIONING-
Midpoint Turning Point-GO TO PETSHOPPE TO FACE FEARS,
    GETS ARRESTED

    Act 3:

Rethink everything-FORGET THERAPY, BUT JUDGE ORDERS TO
    COnTINUE
New plan- COUNTERCONDITIONING AT AQUARIUM- SHARK ATTACK
Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift- THE PARTY-
TOILET STUCK, JON FULL OF CRAP.

    Act 4:

Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict- COUNTERCONDITIONING
    AT THE ZOO
Resolution- KAT FINDS OUT WAS WRONG, &
JON DIVES IN WATER TO RESCUE BOB, , ANIMALS QUIT
    CHASING.

    3. Once you have created the 4-Act Structure for your Protagonist, go back over it to see if there is any big picture points you need to add to represent your Antagonist.

    4. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.
