    Lesson 7:
    Mary Buchanan Comedy Situations
    What I learned doing this assignment is it’s hard to write comedy at any time but when your family is dealing with with hospice, it’s impossible.

    My three comedic situations:

    1. the opening scene is a kitchen fire due to forgetting cinnamon rolls were in the oven. this is the third time Margo has had to call the fire department and rebuild her designer kitchen. She has no culinary skills. embarrassment
    2. Margo cooks a new recipe and the cake crumbles into a millions pieces because she left out two key ingredients and added them at the end of the process. She makes a mountain out of the crumbles. She calls it crumb cake. She refuses to give up and take the high road.

    Will return to this post when the humor returns.

    Mary Buchanan RomCom Project: The Full Plot

    What I learned from the assignment is this plan provides an excellent outline for the initial writing. It’s much easier with this plan. I wish we had had one complete basic blank outline with all the parts listed in order. I’m not sure I have everything in the right order.

    Act 1
    Opening: Margo puts cinnamon rolls in the oven and moves to the living room
    Her initial State: The house is on fire:
    His initial State: He arrives at a meeting in a courtroom in New York City. He sits there for several days. He visits his mother and shows great love for her and her cooking.
    Meet/Cute :
    Flashback: Margo remembers meeting Tony at the wedding
    Attraction/Flirting: He promises he will call
    Inciting Incident: Goes to Wildflowers meeting, opens the letter from the FBI
    Turning Point: Margo becomes angry because she believes Tony thinks she is a criminal. She hires an attorney. What she does not know is Tony is in New York City working on a case.
    Margo meets a con man but does not fall for the scam. She goes to Tallahassee to investigate. Meets a nice man who is a playboy, a prominent real estate broker. The con man pretended to be a part of the playboy’s broker firm.
    Tony returns to Tallahassee and stops at his favorite restaurant, and hears about the playboy’s new interest. They have been friends for years. Tony is unaware of the FBI letter but discovers the playboy’s new female interest. The playboy’s father asks Tony to do some research on the con man. Tony has two days off and does the research at home. He finds information and he goes to Madison with the playboy to tell Margo the latest situation.
    Margo is incensed when the nice gentleman broker shows up at her house with Tony. (Tony is unaware of the case against Margo because he has not returned to the office. He goes back to work tomorrow.
    Tony realizes Margo has a new love interest. He tell the playboy to stay away from Margo. He saw Margo first. It surprises him that he admits that. The playboy never calls Margo because he “doesn’t mess with the FBI.”

    Act 2
    New Plan
    Margo: When the playboy doesn’t call, Margo feels dejected. (Tony has told the playboy to forget Margo. She is a sweet woman and Tony is protective of Margo.)
    Tony returns to work, and he learns that the man who was the investigator of the new Madison County case has to head home due to family illness. Tony is the appointed lead agent because he handled the Ponzi scheme last year. He was also told that after this assigned case, he would be transferred to Miami. He begins the investigation and fails at every turn. He has a meeting with Margo and her attorney.
    Plan in Action:
    Margo begins preparation for a court case, continues cooking lessons, and decides to forget marriage.
    Tony continues to interview the criminal, who claims his evidence proves Margo was aware of the fraud and was a partner in the original crime.
    Midpoint Turning Point: Margo hates Tony. Margo watches the weather news. A storm is brewing in the Atlantic Ocean. The disturbance might be a problem for the Gulf of Mexico and Florida.

    Act 3
    Rethink Everything: Tony is told he will be transferred to Miami in 90 days. He talks to Playboy and his father. They recommend he open his own PI business.
    New Plan: He calls Margo to see if a house is available in Madison. She refuses to sell him a house. He drives over to Madison and meets with Sydnee, who agrees to find him a home, but he keeps it a secret from Margo. Sydnee talks to Diane, who has her old house up for rent. That’s the perfect matchmaker plan.
    Turning Point: Huge failure/Major shift
    Margo: The hurricane is headed toward the panhandle of Florida and will be a category 4 when it hits. Evacuate or find shelter. Margo packs important stuff and prepares to move to Diane’s farmhouse because it has a basement. Takes videos of home inside and out. Does the same for Sydnee’s home. She also makes cookies and buys food for the stay (a week’s supply of food and drinks. Grace, Margo and Sydnee leave Margo’s car and Grace’s in Margo’s garage and they head to the farm. The rain is bad, wind is picking up.
    During the storm, Margo realizes the danger and thinks about Tony. She wonders where he is staying. She thinks about her life self-reflection. JJ, David, and Chase called and check on their sweethearts. All three men are with the Emergency system of Madison County.
    Tony visits the prisoner several days in a row, hoping for a new clue to prove Margo is innocent. Tony makes one last visit to the prison. The weather is bad. The storm is approaching. The prisoner changes in front of Tony and assumes another personality – the first Ryan speaks, confessing his other self is lying. Margo is innocent. He tells what the second personality did. Tony heads back to the office to file his report, but the office has closed, according to the order of the governor. He has the proof but can not tell anyone because the court case is still active until closed by the judge and bureau chief. Playboy‘s father invites Tony and Playboy to stay at his father and mother’s home because the home is away from large trees. Tony heads to his friend’s home. Tony calls the State Emergency person he knows and discovers that 3,000 boy bags are ordered for the tri-county area. He’s afraid Margo will die, not knowing she was proven innocent.
    Demonstrate the change:
    Margo confesses her true feelings to Sydnee and Diane. Sydnee and Diane tell Margo about renting the house to Tony. At first, she doesn’t believe that big lie, but she allows a smile to emerge and hugs her friends. “Margo said, “This calls for a cookie prepared by me.” They are preparing snacks when they hear the helicopter overhead . Later she hears Tony calling her name.
    Tony tells the playboy and dad, he is moving to Madison County and marry Margo. Playboy says, “I thought she hated you.” Tony admitted Margo’s attitude was an issue. He then decided to head to Madison County and tell Margo the truth and see if she is alive. When his phone is working, he discovers all the highways to Madison County are blocked. He panics and hires a pilot who owns a helicopter, but he has difficulty getting to the pad to take off. Tallahassee was hit by a tornado near his friend’s home.

    Act 4:
    Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict:
    Tony is in the helicopter seeing the destruction of Madison County. He cannot land. The pilot finds the landing pad at the hospital. Tony runs to Margo’s house. Stopped in many places by trees and down power lines, and police.
    He finds an empty house. He runs until he sees a bicycle in the road and he rides to Sydnee’s house. No one is there. He sees Chase in a police car and finds out Margo is at Diane’s house and gets directions, but he can’t drive there. So the helicopter takes Tony to the farmhouse. He sees the house is standing, but trees are against the side where he assumes the basement is. He and the pilot put stuff away so the people can come out.
    When Margo hears Tony calling her name, she shouts back. She has a cookie in her hand.

    Resolution:
    Tony proposes. Margo accepts and offers Tony a cookie, who stares at the concoction. When he tastes it, he smiles and kisses Margo

    What I learned from this assignment is that when the writer analyzes every aspect of a character’s life, the character responds differently to situations. The writer creates a greater experience for the reader, who sees the character as real. The writer has more ideas to use in the story. The story will become more real.

    Margo Cashwell
    1. Initial State: Margo is a beautiful determined real estate broker. She was a victim of a Ponzi scheme run by a classmate. She cannot cook, and she cannot keep a secret. She is confident because of her success as a real estate agent, but she begins to feel stupid after she loses all of her money. Margo is happy with her work and satisfied with her life. She has a great personality and is okay with not being married. However, when both of her best friends get married, Margo feels loneliness for the first time. She is a fifth wheel. She questions her choices in life. Is she too old to begin a relationship? Is she too set in her ways to change?
    2. Meet-Cute Moment: When she meets Tony for the first time, it’s not a pleasant experience because he is an FBI agent investigator. She is intimidated, and then she associates him with the loss of her hard-earned money. It isn’t until Sydnee’s wedding that she meets the real Tony, who is handsome, friendly, and fun.
    3. Initial Challenges: (1) Margo discovers Tony is the investigator for the new crime and she is accused of being an accomplice or partner to the Ponzi scheme. This rocks her world. She doesn’t know what to do because she is innocent. (2) She meets a con man who tries to trick her into a contract, but the occasion provides the introduction to another handsome man. (who happens to be an acquaintance of Tony). Tony stops him from calling Margo. Tony never called and now the new guy does not call. Margo’s life is a mess, and she is facing a criminal trial.
    4. Major conflict/obstacle: A Category 4 hurricane is on the way to Madison County. Margo may lose everything again. She has already lost her money, but she worked hard to rebuild her wealth. The fear is exhausting.
    5. Self-reflection: The time she is among friends and the severity of the storm gives her time to reflect on her life, and she realizes she never wants to be alone again. She’s afraid she is going to die.
    6. Acceptance and Growth. Margo wants what her friends have: a life complete with family. She is of value. She will prove her innocence because she is innocent.
    7. Demonstration and Growth: She tells Diane and Sydnee she thinks she loves Tony. Sydnee tells her about how Tony came to Madison looking for a house. When she hears Tony calling, she knows she loves him and he loves her. She admits the truth.
    8. Reunion: When Tony proposes, she accepts.

    Tony Leveche
    1. Initial State: Tony fell in love in college, but his sweetheart chose a rich guy over him. He avoided romance after that. Then, he saw his fellow FBI partners, one by one, get divorced, He witnessed their frustration and despair when their marriages fell apart At that point, he chose the job over the relationship. He decided a quality relationship with a woman was impossible if one does the job correctly. He chose his career over marriage. He encouraged other young men to follow his plan. Marriage could get a man killed in more ways than one was his mantra. He also did not trust a woman. He was financially secure but not good enough for a woman. He feels insecure.
    2. Meet-Cute moment: When he first saw Margo in the Madison Café, he saw her when she was worried about her money. She had just figured out that Ryan Richardson might not be so honest with her money. She did not see Tony in the restaurant, she was too worried. Tony felt he could help her. Then he goes to interview her for the investigation and sees how beautiful she is. She becomes the real estate agent and puts on her charm until she realizes why he is in her office. Then they meet again at Sydnee’s wedding to JJ. Tony notices how beautiful Margo is in that gorgeous red dress. It’s Valentine’s Day. Margo is alone at the head table. He goes to her rescue and becomes her dance partner for the night. They have a great time, and he ends the evening with, “I will call you.” Again, he doesn’t call due to his new assignment for the FBI. When he returns to Tallahassee, he discovers Margo is accused of being a partner in the Ponzi scheme.
    3. Initial Challenges: Tony puts his job first. (1)He doesn’t believe Margo is guilty because the evidence doesn’t pass the “smell test.” However, his investigation doesn’t produce any errors about the evidence. He keeps returning to prison to question the criminal and works with other FBI experts to prove Margo’s innocence. (2) When he sees his acquaintance businessman is also interested in Margo, he stops the man( who is a playboy) from calling Margo. He knows the man will only hurt Margo. (Tony is a caring person)
    4: Major Conflict The hurricane is coming. Tony goes one more time to prison to interrogate the criminal. He witnesses the man move into the second personality and the criminal tells the truth about how the new evidence is fraudulent. The weather is awful and the FBI office is closed. Tony has the evidence but can’t close the case until the Bureau hears the new case. He learns 3,000 body bags are ordered for the tri-county area. He’s afraid Margo might die not knowing she was cleared.
    5. Self-Reflection During the storm, he realizes his life is not complete. He has relied on his work to fill the void. He’d rather be in a relationship. He’s not a bad guy.
    6. Acceptance and Growth: He wants a life with Margo. He hopes it is not too late. He hopes she is alive. He must get to her. He hires a helicopter and pilot
    7: When he arrives in Madison County, he runs to Margo’s house and does not find her. He finds a bike in the street and rides to Sydnee’s house and does not find her. He doesn’t know Diane’s address. He stops and talks to a cop ( Chase Carter), a friend of Margo, Sydnee, and Diane. He tells Tony how to get to Diane’s farmhouse.
    8: The helicopter lands in the grazing field of the horses on Diane’s farmhouse. He runs as he yells for Margo. They are digging out of the basement, and Margo hears him calling her name. He proposes to her.

    What I learned from this assignment is this is the best process for writing my book. This lesson was easy after all the preparation prior to this lesson.

    Lesson 4 Plot track – 7 Stages of Love
    1. Meet Cute
    Flashback from a previous book: Tony walks into Margo’s office to interview her as
    a potential witness in a Ponzi scheme.
    2. Attraction/flirting: Tony sees her alone at the head table at Sydnee’s wedding reception and offers to be her escort for the evening. They dance all night. He promises to call her.
    3. The Denial: Tony’s professional life is hectic, and his first love married a rich man. He is suspicious of relationships for both reasons. Most of his cohorts are divorced because of their jobs. Margo falls in love for the first time and waits for Tony’s
    call, which doesn’t happen for months. Then, it is business rather than friendship.
    4. Separation/forced together: (1) The couple has to deal with the alleged crime involving Margo. (2)A con man tries to steal Margo’s money. He does not know she is the victim of a recent scam. She outwits the guy but meets the good-looking son of a real estate broker in Tallahassee. (3) Margo attempts to start over with the new guy. Tony crushes that new relationship b,ut Margo doesn’t know why the new man doesn’t call. Margo thinks she is jilted again.
    5. Working through issues: Tony works to prove Margo is innocent of a crime. Margo gives up on relationships and is angry that Tony is a jerk in her eyes. Tony discovers he must transfer to Miami to keep his job. He decides to retire and move to Madison
    But Margo refuses to sell him a house. He goes to Margo’s best friend who finds him a rental. He figures that if he moves to Madison, he can win her over, but he has 30 days left on the job before he can begin winning Margo.
    6. Hate/betrayal/All is lost: The hurricane arrives in Madison County. The eye passes directly through the community. Tony has proof that Margo is innocent but is scared to death, and he will never be able to tell her. He can’t get to her physically or by phone. He knows 2,000 body bags have been requested by the state emergency team for the tri-county area. Margo and her friends feel they are going to die in the storm. Margo decides if she survives the storm, she will forget relationships and Tony—too much drama for her age.
    Tony finally leases a helicopter to find Margo and see if she is alive. He searches everywhere before he finds her
    7. Love Happens: When she hears Tony calling her name, she knows he loves her and she loves him. He and the pilot pull Margo and friends from the basement. He proposes.

    I learned in this assignment that this process provides new steps to lead the writer to create stories with more depth, streamlining the story. It saves so much time. Your characters become real, and the reader will keep turning the pages.

    Brainstorm ideas N/A. for this book; it is part of a series. The setting has to be Madison County. All of my books’ settings are in Madison County.

    Bigger Story: The hurricane represents life with its ups and downs. The storm is south of Cuba, and the path is predicted to head to the Gulf of Mexico toward the panhandle of Florida. The eye may approach land anywhere from Cedar Key to Apalachicola. Margo, the main character’s life, will face three challenges to guide her to the final decision about Tony. Tony’s storm challenge is to forget his fear of a dangerous job that doesn’t fit with the success rate of marriages in the FBI unit. He doesn’t want to be a statistic in either category.

    Act I. Margo is working on her culinary skills and stops to watch the weather report. Her two friends call, and she forgets what is cooking in the oven. Her house catches on fire.
    The reader meets all the characters when Margo attends the weekly Tuesday meeting of the Wildflowers.

    Inciting incident: A letter from the FBI announces Margo is under investigation. She is being framed. She assumes Tony is the investigator but can get no confirmation. He has never called like he promised the last time they were together at her friend’s wedding.
    Turing point. Tony has not called. She wants to know if Tony is part of the investigation. Is that why he has abandoned her? She is angry because she lost all her money in the last Ponzi scheme when she met Tony. He is bad luck for her.

    Act 2: She forgets Tony. He is too much drama. She prepares for the approaching storm. Another con man enters ( man), a playboy and Tony’s acquaintance. Tony finds out and stops the relationship immediately. Margo doesn’t know why the new relationship goes nowhere. The guy never calls Margo for a date. She feels despair again. What is wrong with her?
    Tony tries to solve the FBI case because he believes Margo is innocent. She refuses to talk to Tony so she has no clue how hard he is working to clear her of the alleged crime. Technically, he can’t call her because of his duty to the FBI. The handwriting expert confirms Margo’s handwriting on the contracts in question, but the expert has concerns about the documents, which gives Tony hope.

    Plan In Action: Tony goes back to prison to interview the perpetrator of the crime. He fails to solve the issue and as soon as he returns to Tallahassee, he is told he and three others are being transferred to Miami for his job as soon as the current case is completed. He doesn’t want to leave Tallahassee or Margo.
    He calls Margo, hoping to find a house or condo in Madison. He is retiring She tells him she will never sell him a house and that no condos are available now. He can’t tell her anything about the case until the investigation is done. She tells him to get lost.
    Tony goes to Madison and finds Sydnee, and asks for help. Sydnee remembers Diane (the third friend) has a home that will be available for rent soon. She calls Diane, who agrees to rent the house to Tony. Tony returns to Tallahassee to do the paperwork for retirement in thirty days and returns to the prison to interview the criminal again. He refuses to give up.

    Midpoint: The storm becomes a category four as it hits land thirty miles south of Madison County. In prison, Tony watches as the real criminal changes personalities in the interrogation and admits he forged all the documents. Tony rushes to his office but has to leave immediately because every office and business in Tallahassee is closing due to a storm.

    Act 3
    Rethink Everything: Madison County is locked for eight hours as the eye passes through Madison. Margo and her friends are at Diane’s farmhouse in Diane’s basement because neither Sydnee nor Margo’s homes have basements. The friends want to go through this storm together. Everyone is frightened. The ranch hand is with them. He is aware of the body bags and the danger the group is facing. JJ and Diane’s husband are Diane’sergency management in town.
    New Plan: Tony has the paperwork to clear Margo but can’t finish the processcan’tis sent home for safety. He can’t finish the job and can’t tell Margo. The hurricane is a frightening experience. Margo decides to stay single for the rest of her life.
    Tony continues to check with emergency personnel in Tallahassee and gets updates on Madison County. He discovers 2,000 body bags have been ordered for the tri-county area which includes Madison County. He is in lockdown at his condo. It’s a waiting game, and he’s afraid Margo will die. While locked in his home, he plans the rest of his life with Margo. Life is too precious.

    Major shift: The eye of the storm passes slowly. Everyone in the basement steps outside to witness the stillness Margo realizes the value of life with a loved one. She will prove her innocence and find the right one for her.
    Tony can’t get to her. Trees can’town, no electricity. No vehicle can drive to or through Madison County. All highways are closed. The area is a war zone. He calls every private pilot and finally finds one who will fly Tony in a helicopter to Madison. Tony lands in a spot in the local town cemetery and runs to Margo’s house. No one is home. He runs to Sydnee’s house. No one is home. She returns to the helicopter because he doesn’t have a clue where Diane lives. All he knows is her last name.. The pilot called someone who could contact the emergency unit in Madison County, but they couldn’t help him. Tony couldn’t wait. He runs to a utility truck working to clear a street and asks if anyone knows Diane. The man tells him how to get to the farmhouse, but no road is open.

    Act 4
    Climax: The pilot heads to Dian’s farmhouse in the country. From the helicopter, Tony panics because he sees the damage to the farm. He lands in a grassy area and runs screaming for Margo, who is locked in the basement. Tony and the pilot move debris away from the entrance and Margo comes out with everyone there. He informs her she is innocent, he loves her, and he has a house in Madison County.

    Resolution: Margo confirms she loves him. He proposes.

    What did I learn from this lesson? The questions forced me to think deeper, especially about the characters’ needs. That may be why I was not able to finish this book the first time I tried to write it.

    Who is she? Margo Cashwell is a successful real estate broker who is the victim of a Ponzi Scheme. She has never married and now feels like she has lost out by focusing on her career. Both of her close friends have successful marriages. She is a fifth wheel among her friends. She doesn’t allow the situation to define her. She pursues her career and starts over.

    Who is he? Tony Leveche, the FBI agent, interviewed her and convinced her to testify against the criminal, Margo’s classmate and professional colleague. Now, he is the chief investigator who accuses her of participating in the scheme. He allows the past to determine his future.

    What makes them lovable.?
    Both have great personalities, show concern for others, want the best for others, and are altruistic. Margo can’t keep a secret. Tony loves his mother and knows Margo can’t cook. He plays jokes about her culinary skills.
    He fell in love many years ago, but it ended poorly. He refuses to give love a chance.

    What attracts them to each other?
    Tony admires her determination to succeed and her zest for life. Margo loves that he accepts her for what she is. Both are high-energy and love their work.

    What needs does each fulfill for the other?
    Margo is a risk-taker. Tony must finally take a chance on love. Tony will teach her everything about cooking and will partner
    with her. He accepts her as she is.

    Ways to create the best relationship:
    Tony will get under Margo’s skin by teasing her about cooking, but he will also teach her. Although he is the investigator for the alleged case against her, Tony discovers the truth, which leads to her innocence.
    The hurricane forces them to realize they love each other.

    Mary Buchanan: RomCom Project Lesson 1
    I forgot this course was about “comedy” and I worked all month on a beautiful romance story. Today, I picked up another manuscript I tried to finish but failed to finish. I may have to start over with a new plan. I learned that my original purpose for Margo, one of the three main characters in the Madison County Series, may be more challenging to create. Margo may need to be more rounded as a character. I learned the conventions of romcom and how tracking ideas may lead the writer down a different path because the original purpose may be too narrow to allow for creativity.
    This scenario is book 5 of the Madison County Series.
    Lesson I
    1. Create a Concept:
    Two People Who Belong Together: Margo, a 45ish real estate broker who has never been married, and Tony, an attractive FBI agent (she met in book 1), meet again at the wedding of Margo’s best friend. Tony and Margo dance all night at the reception and promise to call her. Due to career travel, Tony does not call. The two meet again when Margo is framed for a Ponzi scheme. The original crime was solved in Book 3 but the financial advisor sent to prison has framed Margo for the original crime and has created false evidence.
    How Are They Separated: Both are career-minded. Tony travels most of the time. He is the investigator for the new case. When the criminal’s second personality speaks on the witness stand, Tony realizes the truth. Tony has personal relationship issues because his first love chose the rich man over him. He has commitment issues for fear of rejection.
    Margo can not forgive Tony for believing she committed the crime. She has to accept she is unhappy and lonely as a single woman.
    What Forces Them Together: A con artist tries to trap Margo in a real estate situation. Tony is called to help another real estate firm involved, and he travels to Madison to meet with Margo, who doesn’t know he is coming.
    The courtroom segment forces Tony to see the truth, but Margo hates him after she is cleared. He wants to move to Madison to live. She refuses to sell him a home.
    A Category 4 hurricane blows through Madison County and destroys the land. Tony hears that 2,000 body bags have been ordered for the tri-county area where Madison is located.
    The night the storm passes through reminds everyone of the value of life and how lucky they are to be alive.
    Issues to be Resolved: After the hurricane, Tony rents a helicopter to get to Margo to see if she is alive. Tony has to take a chance on love and trust Margo will not leave him.
    Margo has to forgive Tony for thinking she was a criminal and believe in herself
    On Their Journey of Love: Margo lost most of her money in the original Ponzi scheme in Book 1. She is constantly facing a begin-again process in her work, finances, and relationship with men. (She lost her first real boyfriend in Book 3.) She was the key witness in the first crime. She helped the FBI last year. Now, they are not believing her side of the new situation.
    2. Conventions:
    Experience of Falling In Love: Margo is frustrated because Tony has not called. She receives a letter from the FBI the informs her she is under investigation of a crime. She discovers Tony is the investigator assigned to the case.
    The Journey of Love: Tony has a job to do, and he is shocked that Margo is accused, but the evidence is strong that Margo was a co-conspirator in the Ponzi scheme.
    Margo stresses because her life is in turmoil again. She has lost all of money and not she will lose what she has saved to pay attorney expenses.
    Margo has another con artist situation that she must face from a different group other than the Ponzi scheme.
    Her two friends stand by her.
    Relationship Set-up: The framing scheme does not work when the criminal shows his second personality and confesses that he is the mastermind of the first crime. However, it’s too late for Margo to salvage her relationship with Tony. She never wants to see Tony again. He feels terrible but decides it’s best he forgets Margo because he believed the evidence and not her. He realizes she will not give him a second chance.
    Issues Each Must Resolve: Margo and Tony’s fears of commitment and rejection. Their lack of trust in themselves and others. It’s not bad luck. Life has many challenges.
    Separation: The hurricane arrives and both believe they may die. When Tony can not get to Margo, he disobeys the boss and hires a helicopter and flies to Madison County to find her. The damage is horrific, and he has to search in several places and finds her at her friend’s farmhouse. She doesn’t want to face any more challenges alone.
    How will Comedy be Expressed: Margo can not cook and she wants to learn because Tony is Italian. His mom is a great cook. Margo’s two best friends possess fabulous culinary skills and try to teach Margo to be successful in the kitchen. The first department is called often to save Margo’s house from a kitchen fire. She has many culinary catastrophes throughout the book. It’s so bad that she always brings the rolls to the friends’ gatherings.

    Note: The Madison County Series is about three best friends who have settled in Madison County after living in other states for 25 years away. Two have successful marriages and want Margo to be happy. They tend to interfere and “help” her along the way, especially in the love department.

    Hello, I’m Mary Buchanan
    I have written two scripts that I entered in two competitions. With the last critique, I was advised to write sweet romance
    novels. I have published three sweet romance novels, and I launch my first cozy mystery in early September. Every time I enroll in one of Hal’s courses, I improve my writing skills. I love Hal’s teaching style.
    After reading your introductions, I’m excited to be in the room with this fabulous talent. I know I will learn much from each of you. I’m an old woman, 75 years young. I began writing during COVID-19 three months after my husband died. Writing helped me survive the loss. I also have a sister in Hospice, and I’m sure I will miss deadlines sometimes, but for me, it’s about improving my next novel. My sister is my biggest fan and one who encourages me every day. I’m known as the Sweetest Seminole in the South. I live on the family farm about sixty miles from FSU and love college football and chocolate.

    I’m Mary.
    This is my third class with Hal. I always become a better writer after his classes.
    I write sweet romance novels, not screenplays. I tried to write screenplays (2), but an evaluator advised me to switch to novels.
    The reason I am taking this course is to become a better writer. I still dream of writing a screenplay.
    I think the most unique fact about me is I am 75 years old, a retired high school administrator, and still dreaming about the future. I love learning. I average listening to about three classes a week. My goal is to produce a better novel with each new book. I’m also called the Sweetest Seminole in the South.

    Scene EXT CHERRY LAKE, FLORIDA DAY

    Travis is sitting in a chair near the dock, fishing. He has rock n roll music playing on the barge.

    Liz arrives. She hears the loud music and walks around the house toward Travis. She takes a big

    breath.

    LIZ

    Mr. Maxwell?

    Travis does not turn around.

    TRAVIS

    Yes.

    LIZ

    I’m Elizabeth Bradford from Wellington, Vermont. Some

    strangers know me as Sarah. Some classmates from high

    school call me Lizzie, but the man who lives in that house

    and who is the best kisser I know calls me Liz.

    Travis turns around.

    LIZ

    I happened to be in the area today, calling on businesses

    on behalf of the Brandford Inn which I own one third interest.

    Travis laid down his fishing rod and reel and walked toward Liz.

    TRAVIS

    This is Christmas Eve. Did any business respond to your

    professional call?

    LIZ

    Not yet, but I’m hoping one business give me a chance.

    TRAVIS

    How do you know the man who lives in that house is the

    best kisser? Do you kiss all your prospects?

    JILL
    No. (then laughs)

    Travis moves closer.

    I read in a book that the best kisser can improve if he practices.

    Sam threatened me. What’s that about?

    I like Sam. I like you better. (BEAT) You realize our mothers and my

    sister are not going to stop meddling until we are married?

    LIZ

    Will they stop then, you think?

    TRAVIS

    Probably not.

    LIZ

    I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the ownership of Bradford Inn. Since

    I work there, I don’t think about it I consider myself an employee only.

    TRAVIS

    I say let’s get back to the research experiment.

    LIZ

    I agree.

    Travis grabbed her hand and they headed to the boat.

    Travis

    We’ll start our first tradition today and practice.

    LIZ

    What’s that?

    As they get on the boat, Travis pushes a button. The theme from

    Soul Train plays.

    TRAVIS

    Travis kisses Liz as he guides the barge for the five o’clock ride. Both of their phones start to ring.

    Becca calls for help.

    Hey, Mom.

    BECCA (CONT)

    Can you wire me enough money for a plane ticket home? I want to come

    home for Christmas.

    She is packing her suitcase as she listens to her mom.

    BECCA (CONT)

    You found me a job?

    She stops and sits on the bed.

    BECCA (CONT)

    What kind of job?

    BECCA (CONT)

    You’re kidding. I can’t be a waitress. I can’t remember my name!

    Please wire me the money today. I will find a job when I get there.

    BECCA (CONT)

    Thanks, Mom. Yes. the usual place. (BEAT) Yes, I promise I will get

    a job this time.

    She throws the phone on the bed.

    BECCA (CONT)

    Who know? Maybe I will meet a rich man on the plane home!

    Phone rings. It’s Jake

    BECCA

    Hello?

    JAKE JONES

    I’m sorry about what happened today in the chapel. I’m sure

    you are upset.

    BECCA

    I knew Jill was confused. Travis and I needed more time to try

    and work things out. She manipulated all of us trying to force

    us back together. She is a horrible person. Travis and I agreed

    to meet later in the spring without his meddling mother.

    JAKE JONES

    I’m glad to hear that. (BEAT) I was wondering if I could make that

    investor presentation today to you.

    BECCA

    I just received word from home. My mother has an issue. I am

    flying home for the rest of the holidays. I hate to leave this place.

    I was looking forward to relaxing here during the holidays.

    JAKE JONES

    Merry Christmas, Becca. Can I call you sometime?

    BECCA

    Of course. I look forward to talking to you. Bye,

    She blocks his phone number.

    Jake heads to the lounge for his last concert.

    JAKE JONES

    Looks like I will be staying home after the holidays. I need cash.

    I’ll call Becca in a few weeks. I know she’s loaded.

    Scene INT LIZ’S CONDO NIGHT

    Liz meets Travis’ parents and family and learns the truth.

    Split phone call ANNABELLE

    Hey, have you had dinner?

    LIZ

    I’m not hungry. Are you feeling better?

    ANNABELLE

    My headache is gone. Come to the café.

    LIZ

    I think I will stay in tonight. Thanks.

    Annabelle hands her phone to Sam.

    SAM

    Hey, I know you are sad. You need to

    come and hear this. We have new

    information.

    LIZ

    Okay, but I can’t stay long. I’m tired.

    When Liz arrived, her mom and Sam were sitting with several people. Annabelle waved her over.

    ANNABELLE

    Liz, I want you to meet Travis’ parents, Jill and Dan, and his

    sister, Marty and her husband, Charlie.

    Dan and Charlie stand and shake her hands.

    JILL

    Would you sit down, Sweetheart and let me explain why

    Travis is on the way to Jacksonville, Florida.

    Liz sat by Sam and he reached and held her hand while Jill begins her story.

    JILL

    This story started before Thanksgiving.

    Scene INT AIRPLANE DAY

    Liz is sitting in a airplane seat, preparing for take off, heading to Jacksonville, Fl.

    STEWARDESS

    Is this your first flight?

    LIZ

    (Shakes her head, no.) It’s my last flight.

    STEWARDESS

    It won’t be long and we will land in Jacksonville. The weather

    is beautiful there. Seventy degrees.

    Liz buckles her seatbelt. Puts on head phones and begins the movie.

    She plays solitaire on her phone. As the plane takes off, Liz grabs the arms

    of her seat. She closes her eyes.

    scene INT BRADFORD INN ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM DAY

    Annabelle calls for an administrative meeting for Chief of Security information

    ANNABELLE

    Before Chief Jack makes his presentation, I want to announce I have

    scheduled a small wedding in the chapel today at 11:00AM. It is not on

    the calendar. The family will gather in the side room for a meal catered

    by the restaurant afterwards.

    SAM

    Will I need to provide champagne?

    ANNABELLE

    I forgot to ask. Only nine are attending, including photographer.

    Deliver enough flutes and two bottles of champagne at 11:20. We’ll

    donate from the hotel.

    SAM

    Got it covered.

    ANNABELLE

    Chief, what news do you have for us?

    CHIEF JACKSON

    One of the bellhops here has uncovered a situation

    that gravely concerns me. It may be a hoax, but we

    are not taking any chances. A guest may be planning

    a murder.

    SAM

    Do we know any names or places?

    CHIEF JACKSON

    No, all we know is that the alleged victim is a male.

    SAM

    Can you tell us how you discovered it?

    CHIEF JACKSON

    The bellhop was investigating a lady named Sarah. He thinks

    she is an unregistered guest. He’s been trying to find her.

    He overheard a conversation about the possible murder

    in the process.

    LIZ

    Are our guests in danger?

    CHIEF JACKSON

    The good news is today is ski day. Most of our

    guests are out of the inn at the ski lodge.

    LIZ

    Thank goodness for that.

    CHIEF JACKSON
    I have hired additional officers to go undercover. They are

    wearing green jackets. The city police is also here.

    LIZ

    What if a guest asks about the men in green jackets?

    CHIEF JACKSON

    Say, “Since most of our guests are at the ski lodge on

    Monday, the chief of security uses this day as a security

    exercise.”

    ANNABELLE

    Will the wedding family be in danger? I could cancel it.

    CHIEF JACKSON

    No, that area will have high security. I hate to ruin

    their special day. If anyone hears the name “Sarah”, please

    inform security or men in green jackets. Sarah may be

    the perpetrator.

    CHIEF JACKSON
    Sam, since the lounge is closed until four, we may use

    it as holding area for guests who need a place to go.

    We know the plan is to act today before lunch. Do not

    tell a guest anything.

    ANNABELLE

    Let’s get in the hallways and keep our eyes open.

    What I learned from this assignment is I realized I left out two scenes that I need to add before this scene. the meeting with the bellhop and the chief and the administration meeting of Bradford Inn where they are informed about the alleged murder.

    Scene INT BECCA’s SUITE DAY

    Becca has not been located because she went to the spa early. Jill and Marty are

    frantic because the wedding ceremony begins at 11:00

    JILL

    Where have you been? We have been calling you all morning!

    BECCA

    I went to the spa this morning. What’s going on?

    MARTY

    Travis has bought the ring. You are getting married at 11:00

    in the chapel.

    BECCA

    I don’t understand.

    JILL

    He is so happy. Our plan worked. Get into your wedding dress..

    Hurry! We must walk through the door at 11:00

    MARTY

    Mom and I arranged everything. I can’t wait to see everyone

    so happy.

    Becca goes to her bedroom and puts on her dress.

    BECCA (V.O.)

    I’m getting remarried in this tacky thing.

    (to Marty) Where are the matching shoes?

    MARTY

    Oh, no, we forgot shoes!

    BECCA

    Don’t worry, I’ll wear my red pair that goes with my

    beautiful red outfit.

    JILL
    Perfect. That will cook good with the matching red bouquet.

    Becca walks out. Her hair looks awful.

    MARTY

    Sit. Let me fix your hair.

    JILL

    You look fabulous. Travis will shocked that we pulled this off.

    Travis was almost bouncing this morning. Was’t he?

    BECCA

    Do you know what caused this change of attitude?

    MARTY

    I’m sure it was the setting, coming back here, the private

    time you had together. WE haven’t see you but a few times.

    Becca looks at Jill and Marty. She doesn’t understand what they are

    talking about.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN HALLWAY DAY

    Becca, Jill and Marty walk slowly down the hall until they reach the

    chapel doors.

    JILL
    You stay out here until 11:00. When you hear singing, walk in and go

    stand in front of the notary. Okay?

    BECCA

    Okay!

    MARTY

    Should I stay out here with her?

    JILL
    No, we are taking pictures first. See you in about ten minutes.

    Scene INT CHAPEL

    Photographer is taking pictures of the men with Dad. Jill and Marty enter

    and Jill directs the rest of the pics. Jake Jones enters with his guitar and sits

    to the side of the stage.

    A beautiful floral arrangement on a stand is in the enter behind the notary.

    Everyone is laughing and having a good time, except for Jake. He is frowning.

    TRAVIS

    Hey, can I get a picture with Jake? (To Jake) Do you mind?

    JAKE
    Of course, not.

    Photo is taken.

    NOTARY

    Now, if everyone will be seated. We can begin. It’s 11:00.

    Everyone takes a seat in the chapel. Travis sits on the right side on the

    front row. The rest of the family sits on the left side, front row.

    Travis sees everyone is on the other side and starts to move, but Jill tells him

    to stay. Dad leans over and gives Travis a thumbs up.

    Jake starts singing “I love you Truly” accompanied by the guitar. Travis

    leans back in the chair, loving the private concert he assumes is for him. He

    is impressed with the song.

    Becca enters from the back and Jill and Marty look back. Jake looks at her

    and sings directly to her.

    When Becca get to the stage, she takes a step up. Travis sees her.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    Is Becca marrying Jake Jones?

    The song is over.

    The Notary waits for a groom to go stand by the bride. No man moves.

    The NOTARY
    Will the groom please come forward?

    Travis looks at Jake. Jake looks at Travis.

    Dad and Charlie look at Travis.

    TRAVIS

    Who is the groom?

    THE NOTARY
    It says on this piece of paper – Travis Maxwell.

    TRAVIS

    (jumps up) That’s a lie. I am in love with Liz.

    Becca looks at Jill.

    JILL
    That’s can’t be. Who is Liz? You’re in love

    with her. (pointing to Becca)

    TRAVIS

    I don’t love Becca. I love Liz.

    ANNABELLE

    You’ll never marry my daughter. You two timmer.

    Annabelle grabs a candlelabra and heads to Travis.

    TRAVIS

    Liz is not your daughter. She’s a salesman who travels.

    Travis is looking at Annabelle and preparing to stop her from

    hitting him.

    J

    Jake drops his guitar and heads to Travis and hits him from

    the side and knocks him to the ground.

    Marty faints. Charlie runs to help her.

    Jill runs to help Travis. Dad runs after Jill.

    The police come out of all the entrances with guns in

    hand.

    Becca screams “Don’t shoot me!” over and over. She runs

    into the notary who falls and knocks down the flower

    arrangement. The flowers and water fall out on Becca, ruining

    her hair and dress. She tries to crawl for cover and her dress is

    hung under the notary.

    The police grab Jake and put him in handcuffs. Travis is hurt

    and his jaw is swelling. Jill starts crying on Travis.

    Another police office grabs Annabelle and takes the candlelabra from her.

    She is screaming, “Stay away from my daughter.”

    Jake is screaming, “He’s the bad man. He needs to be handcuffed. Not me. I am

    innocent.

    One police office grads Dad and pulls him to the side and stands in front of him

    to protect him from being the murder victim. Dad wants to return to his wife so

    he fights the policeman.

    One police office runs to back so no one can enter the chapel.

    The head of security screams for everyone to shut up. He finally blows his whistle.

    Everyone gets quiet.

    SECURITY CHIEF

    We are going to get to the bottom of this situation, but the first

    question is, “Which one of you is Sarah?”

    Scene INT HALLWAY OUTSIDE OF CHAPEL DAY

    Liz is pacing outside of chapel. The policeman is now standing outside the front door.

    When the door opens, Jill, Dad, Marty and Charlie walk slowly out. The ladies are crying.

    The photographers walks out, shaking his head.

    The notary walks out, clothes are wet. He is wiping with a handkerchief.

    Jake walks out. Travis is following him. Jake goes to Liz and gives her a big kiss. When Travis

    sees it, he turns around and asks the policeman for another way to leave the chapel. The policeman shows Travis the side door.

    LIZ

    You are never to kiss me again. We are through. Do you understand?

    JAKE

    Travis is trouble. I am your soul mate. When are you going to

    accept that?

    LIZ

    I have never loved you. We sang together beautifully. That

    was all. Your leaving town after graduation was the best thing

    that happened to me until yesterday.

    JAKE

    What happened yesterday?

    LIZ

    I found someone who is interested in me for who I am?

    Goodbye, Jake.

    Scene INT TRAVIS’ TEMPORARY APARTMENT DAY

    (on phone ) Is a cabin available for the next train to Jacksonville? One way.

    Travis Maxwell. I’ll be there in an hour. Thanks.

    (another call) Sydnee, is the Christmas lunch invitation still open? (BEAT)

    I’ll arrive in Jacksonville Christmas Eve. (BEAT) Thanks. (BEAT)

    I think I need to tell you in person. Otherwise, You wouldn’t

    believe it.

    Scene INT ANNABELLE’S BEDROOM DAY

    SPLIT screen; Annabelle and LIZ

    LIZ

    Can you tell me what happened?

    ANNABELLE

    Sweetheart, I have the headache of a lifetime. I am going

    to bed until my head stops throbbing. Forget Travis .

    Forget Jake. Life is too complicated. I promise we

    will talk when I get up.

    Scene: INT CHAPEL DAY

    phone call) LIZ

    Sam, do you know what happened in the chapel?

    SAM

    I talked briefly to the chief. It was all a misunderstanding. I

    will have a report by the end of the day tomorrow.

    LIZ

    Was Travis involved in that?

    SAM

    His whole family was a part of it.

    LIZ

    I tried to contact him, but he doesn’t answer.

    SAM

    He stopped by about twenty minutes ago. He turned in

    his key and checked out. He said he was tired of dealing

    with people with secrets.

    LIZ

    I wonder who he was talking about?

    SAM

    According to the chief, Travis was scheduled to be

    the groom in today’s ceremony.

    LIZ

    That can’t be! (BEAT) Could you have made a mistake?

    SAM

    No, that’s what the chief said. Travis.

    LIZ

    Thanks,

    She laid the phone on the bed and cried.

    LIZ

    Travis’ whole family are con artists. They fooled us all.

    I guess I will be alone forever.

    What I learned from this assignment is the 30 day timeline is pressure, but I think It’s coming together. The over-all plan is changing from my first thoughts.

    Act 3 Middle scenes

    Scene EXT IN FRONT OF BRADFORD INN NIGHT

    AT the end of the hayride, Jake recognizes Travis is with Liz. Jake is singing

    at Travis’ wedding on Monday. Jake tries to warn Liz and presents proposal to Becca, looking an investor.

    Travis jumps off trailer first and turns to assist Liz who is struggling with blankets.

    TRAVIS

    Liz, will you meet me in the morning for breakfast in the restaurant?

    LIZ

    Sure. What time?

    TRAVIS

    How about eight o’clock?

    LIZ

    Okay.

    TRAVIS

    Would you like to go for a walk? or a carriage ride?

    LIZ

    Since I have these blankets, a carriage ride would be better.

    Travis goes to make arrangements for a carriage ride. Liz moves away from

    those guests who are exiting the hayride. Jake approaches Liz while Travis

    is away.

    JAKE

    Liz, I don’t have much time. Listen, that man is different from us.

    Stay away from him. He’ll hurt you.

    TRAVIS

    Hey Jake. I’ll miss your concert tonight. Have a good

    one. (To Liz) Ready to go?

    LIZ
    Help me with these blankets please. (She ignores Jake.)

    Jake walks away.

    JAKE (V.O.)

    Liz is trying to make me jealous. That’s it. If I could get

    Lizzie’s phone number. Maybe Travis has it. And Becca

    has Travis’ number. I wonder what happened to Becca,

    tonight. Tomorrow, I get Lizzie’s phone number.

    Travis and Liz walk to carriage.

    TRAVIS

    Everything okay?

    LIZ

    Yes, his last concert is Monday night. Do you want to

    go?

    TRAVIS

    Do you?

    LIZ

    No.

    TRAVIS

    Then I don’t want to go either. Tonight, I’m going to convince

    you of the wonderful attributes of country music.

    Liz makes the move to get out of the carriage. Travis laughs.

    TRAVIS

    I promise not to discuss music. (Pauses) Do you have feelings

    for Jake?

    LIZ

    Absolutely not.

    TRAVIS

    He hurt you , didn’t he?

    LIZ

    We were a singing couple in high school. He insisted

    we go to the same college and enter music school.

    The day after high school graduation he left for

    Nashville. I transferred my scholarship to business

    And the rest is history

    TRAVIS

    I’m glad.

    LIZ

    Ater our ride, can we stop and get hot chocolate?

    TRAVIS

    Absolutely.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN RESTAURANT DAY

    Travis meets with Liz to tell her his feelings for her. Jill and Marty interpret Travis’ actions as a sign for

    marriage to Becca.

    TRAVIS

    The food at the inn is fabulous. Everything is so different.

    JILL

    I told you it is now a five star restaurant.

    TRAVIS

    I’m glad I came.

    JILL
    I’m am too.

    TRAVIS

    You travel all over the US with your job?

    JILL

    Eventually, I will. Now, I just go up the east coast.

    TRAVIS

    How often do you leave Wellington for your work?

    JILL

    IT depends on the appointments I get.

    TRAVIS

    Could you work out of Jacksonville or Tallahassee?

    JILL
    Why are you asking that?

    TRAVIS

    With my business, as long as I have an outlet

    and the Internet, I can work from anywhere.

    JILL

    What are you thinking?

    TRAVIS

    It’s a long way from Madison County to Wellington Vermont.

    I would like to date you, see if we are as compatible as I

    believe we are.

    JILL

    I’m not good at long distant relationships either.

    TRAVIS

    You can come to Madison County. I know a real estate

    broker who would find you a place to rent. In fact, a

    friend of mine has an apartment. You are welcome to

    stay with me, but something tells me you won’t do that.

    JILL

    You are saying you want to be in a relationship with me?

    Exclusive?

    TRAVIS

    Yes.

    JILL

    You have only known me for a few days. Why?

    TRAVIS

    I don’t usually like people immediately. That

    night on the train, I could not sleep. All I could

    think about was those emerald eyes.

    JILL

    I have to admit I was attracted to you, too.

    TRAVIS

    IF you’re not ready to move right now, I can come

    here. I’ll find an apartment and travel with you.

    JILL

    Your are serious about this!

    TRAVIS

    I am very serious. But I want you to know.

    Once you live in Madison County, you will never

    want to leave.

    JILL

    I think I will happy anywhere you are!

    TRAVIS

    Does that mean you are saying yes to my idea?

    JILL

    Yes, let’s get that apartment if possible.

    TRAVIS

    I’ll call Sydnee today.

    (Touches her hand.) I care about you, Liz.

    LIZ

    You’ve made me happy.

    Scene INT CONTINENTAL BRAKFAST AREA DAY

    Jill and Marty are meeting and can’t reach Becca whose phone

    is dead.

    JILL
    I don’t understand it. Why isn’t she answering her phone?

    Did you see her last night?

    MArTy

    When we left you and Dad, we went to our suite. I wrapped a

    few presents and went to sleep. But I haven’t seen Travis

    either. Maybe they don’t want to see us. Have you thought of

    that?

    JILL
    They are together alone in their suite. That’s it. They are

    working their marriage out. That has to be it. Maybe we

    should write a book about this experience.

    TRAVIS

    Hey, Mom, (hugs Marty and Mom). Eating all these sweet

    stuff will put the pounds on.

    JILL
    I know but Marty insists we come here every morning for

    breakfast. (to Travis) You look happy.

    TRAVIS

    That’s because I am. I’m going shopping for a piece of

    jewelry this morning. Are the stores open on Sunday?

    MARTY

    The brochure states the stores on Main Street are open

    every day in December.

    JILL

    Would you like for us to go with you and help you select

    this piece of jewelry?

    TRAVIS

    No, I’ve looked at it several times. It’s perfect for the occasion.

    JILL

    Tomorrow, were your suit. We are taking family pics at 11:00

    in the chapel.

    TRAVIS

    I love that idea. I’ll be there. Enjoy your day.

    (aS Travis leaves the lobby, Jill and Marty sit and review the plan) The bellhop

    walks by.

    JILL

    The plan is complete. It goes down at 11:00AM tomorrow. I’m

    ready to get this problem solved. Aren’t you?

    MARTY

    I’ll be glad when it’s all over and we can eat without

    stress. Let’s have another donut.

    The bellhop knew the chief was at home with a cold. The chief promised

    to be at work Monday morning. They were going to stop a murder.

    What I learned from this assignment is the outline was easy because of all the prior details.

    Outline of scenes

    1 – Jake runs into Travis and gets mixed message about Becca Jake learns Liz is going on the hayride. He invites Becca as his guest. (New Plan) Becca has accident in snow and misses hayride and Travis kisses Liz on the hayride. Jake sings Please forgive me Sweetheart on hayride New plan

    3. The bellhop reports his investigation to Director of security Travis asks Liz to date him. He shops for jewelry Jill thinks it’s a ring for Becca New Plan

    4 THE fiasco wedding interrupted by security (Turining point)

    5 Travis learns the truth that Liz is one-third owner of Bradford Inn and sees Jake kissing Liz. Liz tells Jake it is over forever. Travis leaves the hotel and heads for Florida. (Travis gives up. Liz gives up)

    Scene INT OUTSIDE THE ELEVATOR DAY

    Jake heads to rehearsal for Saturday night’s concert, runs into Travis, discovers Liz has a date for the hayride. Jake makes a new plan and invite’s Becca as his date to hayride.

    TRAVIS

    Hey, Jake Jones. Again, I enjoyed your concert last night. I ‘m one

    of your biggeset fans.

    JAKE

    I’m glad you had fun.

    TRAVIS

    I have al your CD’s. Listen to them every day.

    JAKE

    You may be my biggest fan. (Pauses) Did you get all the sleeping arrangement

    for you and Becca set?

    TRAVIS
    Yeah. There was plenty of room in my suite for her.

    JAKE

    That’s good.

    TRAVIS

    I had a good time last night.

    JAKE

    Well, I need to get to rehearsal. Hope you get to another concert. He stops by the continental

    breakfast table and sees treats. He selects a few cookies and grabs a water. The bellhop passes bu and hears Jake’s talking to himself.

    JAKE (CONT)

    I wonder how much money this woman has?

    The bellhop immediately pulls out his pad. He writes

    BELLHOP (V.O.)

    Jake Jones takes the bait. (he looks up) I wonder if I will

    get a promotion for solving this crime. He heads to the

    security office.

    Jake enters the lounge just at Sam gets a phone call.

    JAKE (V.O.)

    My plan has a problem. At least I got to see Lizzie and sing

    for her. I need to say I love her, apologize for my

    big mistake. That should turn her around in her thinking.

    He goes on stage and picks up his guitar.

    JAKE (V.O.)

    If I can get her to one more concert, I will propose to

    her on stage. Fans eat that crap up. What publicity

    that will be.

    He is strumming the guitar when Sam’s phone rings. Jake listens.

    SAM

    Hey, Girl. (pauses) Date for a hayride. Want me to go

    at six as your chaperone? (He laughs) Have fun.

    Jake hearing one side of the conversation, makes a call to Becca.

    JAKE

    Good afternoon, this is Jake Jones.

    BECCA

    Hello, Jake Jones.

    JAKE

    If you’re free tonight, I would like for you to go

    on the hayride with me at six.

    BECCA

    I would love to go. Can we take a carriage ride

    afterwards?

    JAKE

    I have a concert at eight. Maybe tomorrow night.

    BECCA

    That would be great. If we had dinner before, I could

    hear about your big plan for investors.

    JAKE

    Let me check my schedule. See you a little before

    six outside the lobby, tonight. Don’t’ forget a blanket.

    Becca spends thirty minutes selecting her outfit for her date with Jake. She finally selects a white sweater and pants suit. She chooses red stilettos and a matching red scarf. Becca goes into the bathroom and turns on the water. She plans to soak for a few hours. She looks in the mirror and

    screams

    BECCA

    I did not win the scavenger hunt. I have no money. My

    luck must change. At least I have a date tonight. Jake must be

    interested in me or he is trying to make Lizzie jealous. A puzzle

    I must solve.

    .

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN NIGHT

    Becca enters the lobby and walks gracefully to the outside porch. Every man in the lobby looks

    at her. She positions herself near one of the big column near the steps. AS she leans against

    the column, she remembers she did not bring a blanket. The temperature is colder. She starts

    shivering but doesn’t have time to return to her suite for the blanket. She is looking for Jake

    and doesn’t see the little girl running up the steps.

    The little girl slips and slides into Becca who tries to grab the column, but its too big and she roll off

    the porch into a pile of snow. She screams. The bellhop runs outside and sees red heels in the

    air. When he tries to pull Becca out of the snow, he slips and falls on top of her. Two men witness

    what happened and help pull the bellhop and Becca out of the snow. Becca’s white outfit is

    now dirty and wet. Her hair is dripping on her wet sweater. She is cold and her makeup is sliding off her face. Becca looks at the little girl and recognizes the little is the one who won the $1,000 ornament this morning. People are gathering in the lobby to see what is going on outside. Becca holds her head high and waltzes through the crowd like the ghost of Christmas past. A trial of water and dirt follow her along the tile floor. She doesn’t speak. She walks like a model with her nose in the air. She enters the elevator and closes the door.

    Jake sees the crowd gathered in the lobby and exits another door to avoid the crowd. He is carrying his guitar. He looks for Becca, but can’t wait for her. He wants to be the first on the hayride.

    Travis comes downstairs and sees the desk clerk mopping the floor in the lobby. Annabelle is talking to a little girl and her mother. The crowd is moving around. He meanders through the group and sees Liz

    coming from the lounge area. He waves to her. He waits and they walk out side and get on the hayride

    on the back.

    As the trailer pulled away from the inn, a slight snow began to fall. The passengers say “AAHH”. Liz takes the big blanket and Travis helps her wrap up. The two of them form a cocoon. Tha’s when Jake sees Lizzie with Travis.

    JAKE
    I want to welcome everyone to the hayride. I will be providing the

    entertainment for the first trip. Tonight, I am debuting a song. It’s

    called “Please Forgive me Sweetheart”.

    When Jake starts singing, Liz cringes and moves closer to Travis.

    TRAVIS

    You don’t like country music, do you?

    LIZ

    No, but I will listen to it because I know you do.

    She lays her head on his shoulder.

    TRAVIS

    I know a way to tune Jake Jones out of our minds.

    LIZ

    Do you have ear plugs?

    TRAVIS

    No.

    LIZ

    That’s the only way.

    TRAVIS

    No, there’s another way.

    He leans down and kisses her.

    Lesson 16: Finish ACT 2

    What I learned from this assignment is I can’t believe I am as far along in the writing. I need help with the writing of the scavenger hunt. I wish there were instructions for how to write an action scene without words.

    This scene follows Lesson 15 script. I originally placed in Act 3, but I think it belongs in Act 2.

    Scene INT Mezzanine Café DAY

    Liz runs into Travis and has the opportunity to tell the truth.

    LIZ (V.O.)

    (Exiting the elevator and walks toward the café.) I’m exhausted. Another sleepless night

    and for what reason. Travis had the beauty queen as his guest. He knew “Sarah” was

    going to be there. I’m glad I left my phone at the condo. I’m going to eat breakfast and go

    shopping without interruptions.

    Liz gets in coffee line. She is standing still furious about what happened last night when she smells a

    familiar cologne.)

    LIZ (V.O.) CONT

    I know Travis is near because I sell “Canoe”. I love that men’s cologne. It reminds me of

    Dad.

    Travis steps behind Liz.

    LIZ (V.O.) CONT

    He is right behind me. Maybe he doesn’t recognize me. Heck, I’m next. As soon as I speak

    Travis will know who I am.

    SERVER

    How can I help you?

    LIZ

    She whispers) A cup of coffee, please.

    SERVER

    Would you speak a little louder please.

    TRAVIS

    I believe Ms. Sarah would like a cup of coffee.

    Liz grimaced, closed her eyes and her shoulders drooped. Liz turned around to speak but could not find

    the words. She turned back around and accepted the coffee. When she fumbled for her billfold to pay,

    TRAVIS

    Put it on my tab. I’ll have the same. (accepts his coffee) Sarah, do you have laryngitis?

    LIZ

    (whispers) No.

    TRAVIS

    Then, why are you not speaking?

    LIZ

    I don’t have a clue. I think I’m afraid to speak.

    TRAVIS

    Open your mouth wide, please.

    Liz opens her mouth as wide as she can and then realize how foolish she looks. She huffs.

    LIZ

    Did you enjoy making fun of me?

    TRAVIS

    I did. She speaks. I have performed a miracle.

    MAN AT NEARBY TABLE

    Congratulations!

    Travis and Liz look at the man and then toward each other.

    TRAVIS

    Would you join me for breakfast?

    LIZ

    Sure.

    They walk to a table near the edge of the mezzanine.

    SERVER

    Do you need a menu?

    LIZ

    No, I want scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast.

    TRAVIS

    I’ll have the same. Add a glass of OJ, please

    LIZ

    I wish to apologize for telling you my name is Sarah.

    TRAVIS

    The lie?

    LIZ

    Well, it’s not really a lie?

    TRAVIS

    Your name is Sarah Lizzie?

    LIZ

    No.

    TRAVIS

    Your name is really Sarah?

    LIZ

    No.

    TRAVIS

    Your name is not Sarah.

    LIZ

    Yes.

    TRAVIS

    You told me a lie.

    LIZ

    No.

    Travis puts his coffee cup on the table. He is about to speak.

    LIZ

    Stop! Sarah is my alias. It is a safety strategy I use when I

    travel. It’s what I say to protect myself against crazy men.

    TRAVIS

    So, when you met me, you thought I was a crazy man.

    LIZ

    I didn’t think that ….. when I first met you.

    Liz ate her food and refused to look up at him.

    LIZ (CONT)

    Why are we even having this conversation? Where is your date, the beauty queen?

    Why aren’t you having coffee with her?

    Liz covers her mouth. She regrets her remarks. Her jealousy showed in her words.

    TRAVIS

    Who are you talking about?

    LIZ

    The bombshell in red, last night!

    TRAVIS

    I don’t know where she is! Forget her. Tell me about this safety strategy

    that makes you lie to crazy men.

    LIZ

    I didn’t lie!

    TRAVIS

    Oh, your name is Sarah?

    LIZ

    No.

    Travis looks at her and waits.

    LIZ (CONT)

    I told a little lie.

    TRAVIS

    (grinning) I win.

    Liz stared at him. She held her mouth closed by using her fingers to pinch her lips together. She

    refused to smile at him.

    The server arranges the food for Travis and Liz.

    LIZ

    I called your room this morning to apologize. A female answered the phone.

    TRAVIS

    That was my ex. She is staying in my suite. The inn allowed me to stay

    in another place to get away from of her. Wasn’t that nice of them?

    LIZ

    Yes, how did you arrange that?

    TRAVIS

    The bartender in the lounge negotiated with the owner. I’m keeping it

    a secret from my family until we go home.

    LIZ

    Your secret is safe with me. Since I have apologized for my little fabrication,

    I’ll leave you. I’ve taken enough of your time.

    TRAVIS

    Don’t leave. Finish your breakfast.

    LIZ

    Do you truly accept my apology?

    TRAVIS

    Yes.

    LIZ

    And you are not back with your ex?

    Liz grabbed her lips again with her fingers. She stared at her food.

    TRAVIS

    I had no idea Becca was coming here for Christmas She is

    leaving today. Like I said, forget her. Do I call you Liz or Lizzie?

    LIZ

    Liz. I gave up Lizzie when I went to college.

    TRAVIS

    What about Jake Jones?

    LIZ

    What about him?

    TRAVIS

    He claims you, two , were high school sweethearts. You never

    mentioned that when we were discussing Jake Jones on

    the train.

    LIZ

    I’m sorry about that. That relationship ended the day after high

    school graduation. He jumped into show business. I went to college.

    TRAVIS

    I get the impression Jake is not a good memory.

    LIZ

    Jake burned the bridge that can never be rebuilt.

    TRAVIS

    I understand that thought. And you were correct about Bradford

    INN. It’s a beautiful place. What is that noise?

    LIZ

    Everyone is gathering for the scavenger hunt today. It is fun to

    watch.

    TRAVIS

    Would you give me your phone number? Maybe we can get

    together for dinner during our stay here.

    LIZ

    Okay.

    (Liz opens her small notebook in her purse and writes her phone number on a sheet of paper

    and hands it to Travis.

    TRAVIS

    Liz?

    When she stands, Travis stands and kisses Liz on the check.

    In Florida, when a lady gives a man her phone number, it gives the guy

    permission to kiss her on the check.

    LIZ

    I’ve been to Florida and a man never kissed me on the check.

    TRAVIS

    That’s because you have been dealing with crazy men.

    Liz cackled.

    LIZ

    Bye.

    TRAVIS

    Travis pulled a pen from his pocket and began to write notes on a napkin

    And she gave me her phone number! Maybe she is interested in me, too.

    He orders a second cup of coffee and think about breakfast with Liz.

    scene INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY DAY

    The guests are gathering in the lobby. Annabelle enters at 8:50AM. Everyone gathers around her to listen. Becca, in a sweatsuit, pushes her way to the front of the group.

    ANNABELLE

    Remember, when you find the ornament, return to the lobby immediately. We will present the check at that time. One winner per family. All ornaments are on the first floor. Also, I want to remind you of the hayride tonight beginning at 6:00pm in front of the inn. The ride lasts about an hour. Are there any questions?

    No one asks a question.

    ANNABELLE

    (looks at the clock on the wall and begins the count down. Everyone joins in.

    10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 ,2,1, The Christmas Bell contest begins. Good luck to everyone.

    The crowd scatters. People run in to each other. Becca heads to front of the lobby and looks behind planters and under tables.

    MOTHER WITH HER DAUGHTER

    (whispers) Let’s head to the area near the restaurant. You look on that side of the hall and I will

    look on this side. Look in every planter, flower arrangement, tree, everywhere. Got it.

    DAUGHTER

    Yes! This is going to be fun.

    They leave the group and head opposite of Becca.

    Several people look at boxes serving as presents under the Christmas trees. While others examine the ornaments on the trees in the lobby. One lady gets excited then discovers her ornament is a decoy. A friend comforts her.

    Scene EXT BRADFORD INN PORCH DAY

    Becca decides to go outside and immediately slips down and gets wet. Every time she tries to rise, she slips down. The bellhop sees her demise and runs out to assist her and helps her get up.

    Becca

    Get your hands off me. I must get back to the hunt. I have wasted time out here.

    She wipes her hands on her clothes and touches her face which ruins her makeup. Her mascara begins

    to slide down her face. With her hands wet, she continues to make a mess on her face, she runs inside

    to continue the hunt. She gets her list of good hiding places out of her pocket.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY

    There is a scream! Everyone stops hunting. The mother and little girl run into the lobby with Ornament # 2. When the two arrive, Annabelle greets them. Everyone applauds except Becca. A photographer and Santa’s Elf comes out from a room and pictures are made. The check for $1,000 is given to the little girl. Church bells ring. “I Wish you a Merry Christmas” is played over the sound system. Everyone starts to sing.

    ANNABELLE

    Where did you find Ornament #2?

    THE LITTLE GIRL

    I found it in the white plant outside the ladies bathroom near the restaurant. Well

    congratulations. The contest continues. One down and two to find. GO!!!

    Becca goes to the continental breakfast area. No one is looking there. Marty and Jill are sitting at a small table, watching the contest and having breakfast.

    JILL

    I’m dying to know. did Becca stay with you last night?

    MARTY

    What are you talking about? I thought she was in your suite?

    Jill

    No, she came in after the concert and got her stuff and left. OH! that

    means….

    MARTY

    She stayed in Travis’s suite. We did it. Out plan worked.

    Becca entered the area looking for an ornament.

    JILL

    Becca!

    Becca stops looking and sees Jill and Marty. She looks irritated.

    JILL

    How was last night?

    BECCA

    IT was fabulous. I slept like a baby when I finally got to sleep. I would

    love to talk about it, but I am focused on the contest. It’s so much

    fun. Talk later?

    MARTY

    Sure.

    Becca runs down the hallway to get away from Jill.

    BECCA

    I don’t have time to talk about the Jake Jones concert. I need to

    win this contest. That brat found the first ornament. I had that

    place on my list. At least she is out of the contest now.

    JILL

    Becca looked awful. Did you see it?

    MARTY

    Maybe she forgot to take off her makeup last night! Do you what

    this means?

    JILL

    We have a wedding to plan!!

    The bellhop entered the area to grab a donut.

    MARTY

    I think I am going to cry.

    Both began to cry and hug each other.

    The bellhop exits writing in is notebook.

    JILL

    Let’s sit down and think about everything.

    MARTY

    I think they should renew their vows right her like they did five years ago.

    JILL
    I like it. We could talk to Annabelle and see if we can reserve the chapel.

    MARTY

    I will check with registration desk to see if there is a notary available

    who can perform the ceremony.

    JILL
    If we get the chapel, I will order a simple arrangement of flowers and a bouquet

    for Becca. We’ll eat in the restaurant afterwards.

    The bellhop returns to check on the ladies. He selects another donut.

    JILL

    We must purchase new clothes.

    MARTY

    You know Dad is not going to be happy about that!

    JILL

    I know.

    MARTY

    We need a camera or photographer to take pictures.

    JILL
    Right, we want proof this thing happened.

    The bellhop leaves immediately.

    BELLHOP (V.O.)

    (As he is writing) Two ladies had their clothes destroyed. They are hiring photographer

    to take pics as proof of the thing. Dad is upset, may sue for millions. Whatever the

    thing was. It was big. Women cry, will sue for emotional damages as well as

    financial support.

    ( HE looks up from his paper) My classes in criminology are finally paying off.

    The bellhop stops when he hears a scream.

    An older man walks from the lounge area, holding Ornament #1 in his hand.

    Everyone gathers in the lobby as they hear the church bells ring. They applaud. They immediately begin singing Merry Christmas. The Christmas Elf, Annabelle and a photographer enter the lobby. Becca is visibly angry.

    ANNABELLE

    Where did you find Ornament #1?

    THE OLD MAN

    It was in the Children’s Christmas tree in the restaurant

    ANNABELLE

    Congratulations! One more to go! Have fun.

    JILL

    Annabelle, may I speak to you for a moment.

    ANNABELE

    Of course, come into the lobby office. I need to stay in

    this area until the scavenger hunt is over.

    Jill and Annabelle leave the lobby

    Everyone takes off. Becca stays for a minute.

    BECCA (V.O.)

    There is an area between the lounge and restaurant where

    guests can hook up their laptops and work. I bet no one has

    looked there. I am going to casually walk there and check

    it out.

    She casually walks away.

    Dad and Charlie exit Elevator B and walk to the Mezzanine Café.

    Scene INT Mezzanine Café DAY

    Split screen phone call

    DAD

    (calls Travis) Hey, Charlie and I are having lunch in the café upstairs. Come join us.

    Mom and Marty are off doing something. I don’t know what.

    TRAVIS

    I ate early this morning. Had a big breakfast, but I will have a drink

    with you guys.

    The server brought club sandwiches and drinks to the table.

    CHARLIE

    When you sit up here, you can see everything going on down on

    the first level. It busy down there. What is going on?

    DAN

    That means she stayed in Travis’s room. He said he ate a big

    Travis enters and sits down.

    DAD

    TRAVIS

    Hey, I was wondering if you would like to go on the hayride?

    Travis waits.

    Do they allow PDA on that event?

    Dad and Charlie look at each other and then at Travis.

    Travis smiles.

    Public Display of Affection.

    Travis waits.

    I’ll meet you in front of the lobby about 5:50

    Travis looks at his Dad.

    TRAVIS

    What?

    DAD

    You sound like a high school kid!

    TRAVIS

    She’s different. I like her.

    DAD

    I’m glad to hear it. I would like to have some grandchildren. (He looked at Charlie)

    TRAVIS

    Charlie and I will work on it. Won’t we?

    CHARLE

    I will discuss it with Marty over the holidays.

    They laughed and toasted their drinks.

    TRAVIS

    I think I will go shopping for a Christmas present.

    DAD

    That’s a good way to start a relationship with an expensive

    present. Works every time.

    When Travis stands, he sees Mom and Marty enter the lobby with their hands full of packages.

    TRAVIS

    Did you give Mom a limit on how much she can spin?

    DAD

    Should I?

    TRAVIS

    Mom and Marty have done some serious shopping.

    DAD

    I’m not going to look. Don’t look, Charlie! We just ate.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY

    Marty and Jill head to the continental breakfast area to have coffee. The bellhop sees them

    enter and goes to clean up in that area. HE listens.

    MARTY

    I have a brilliant idea. Let’s get Jake Jones in on this!

    JILL

    That would cost a ransom. That might kill Dad. We’ll think

    about it.

    Marty

    Let’s check and see if we have everything for the big day

    When is it scheduled?

    JILL

    She called while you were in the bathroom. It’s Monday.

    MARTY

    I can’t wait to get this over with. (She sees Dad waving to them)

    Mom, look up.

    MOM

    He’s about to get the shock of his life. (Mom and Marty grin at each other. They gather their packages and leave for the café upstairs.)

    The bellhop is shaking as he writes his notes.

    BELLHOP (V.O.)

    Someone may be kidnapped. Ransom. Dad may die. Women

    pure evil. Look innocent. Jake Jones is in on it. Is Sarah part

    of this plan. The beautiful woman. Where does she fit in?

    Scene. INT MEZZANINE CAFÉ

    The family celebrates the future wedding of Becca and Travis.

    DAD

    Sweetheart, do I have any money in the bank?

    MARTY

    Dad, we saved you a few dollars. We were frugal.

    Dad and Charlie laughed.

    DAD

    Jill does not know what that word means.

    JILL
    We have wonderful news!

    DAD

    We do, too. Travis is in love again.

    JILL
    How did you find out? That’s our surprise.

    CHARLIE

    He told us during lunch. Has Becca told you why she came here

    this Christmas?

    JILL
    Not really. We have not had time to talk to her much.

    DAD

    I don’t know how it happened, but they reconnected.

    Travis is happier than I have ever seen him. Don’t you

    agree , Charlie?

    CHARLIE

    He’s acting like a high school kid.

    A loud voice is heard (I found it!) Everyone in the café claps. The hunters crowd

    into the lobby looking for the man who yelled. When he walks in the lobby, holding

    the ornament in his hand, the group begins to sing “We Wish you a Merry Christmas”

    Annabelle, the Christmas Elf and the photographer enter the lobby. They take photos.

    ANNABELLE

    There did you find it?

    MAN

    There’s artwork on one of the bulletin boards in the hallway. It has

    ornaments on it. I went by it three times. Finally, I went to the side

    and looked at the design. This ornament was three dimensional and

    sticking out.

    ANNABELLE

    Well, this check is worth the hunt for you. It’s for $1,500.

    Everyone applauds and congratulates the winner. Becca walks from the

    computer area and is filthy dirty. She has dirt on her pants. Various strands

    of her hair are dangling on her shoulders. She walks to the café and buys

    a bottle of water and heads to the elevators.

    DAD

    Jill, love must be blind.

    JILL

    Why do you say that?

    DAD

    I know Travis is not drinking. I’m positive he is not on drugs. If he

    has fallen in love that that girl again, he must be blind.

    They roar with laughter.

    DAD (CONT)

    How much is this repeat wedding going to cost me?

    JILL

    Not much. It’s going to be simple. and perfect.

    What I learned from this assignment is the creativity is easy but I’m not sure about depth or flow.

    Scene INT THE RED FOX LOUNGE NIGHT

    Split phone call Sam and Liz

    LIZ

    Sam, is Jake in the area?

    SAM

    No, but he is looking for you.

    LIZ

    Turn off the security to the side door to the office.

    SAM

    Okay.

    LIZ

    I will arrive at 7:55.

    SAM

    Your guests walked in a few minutes ago, and there is an empty seat.

    LIZ

    Oh, that means he’s saving a seat for me. Don’t you think?

    SAM

    You are a little too excited about this. You should be more aloof.

    LIZ

    Thanks for saying that. (She starts breathing slow.)

    SAM

    You’re supposed to be calm and cool.

    LIZ

    I’m trying. See you soon.

    Travis and family are seated at a center table in front of the stage.

    (Whispers to Marty) JILL

    Where is she? The concert is about to start. (Gives up on trying to text Becca)

    MARTY

    I don’t know but did you notice[ how Travis is beyond happy.

    JILL

    I noticed. Something must have happened.

    MARTY

    I’m sure she has a reason. We’ll regroup tomorrow.

    JILL

    You’re right.

    Liz enters quietly from the back office, waves to Sam and heads to Travis’ table. A gorgeious bombshell in red enters the lounge and waltzes to Travis’ table and takes the empty seat.

    Charie and Dan immediately look at their wives. Liz returns to the bar and sits on a stool.

    TRAVIS

    What are you doing here?

    BECCA

    I couldn’t get a ticket out of town. (She whispers.) I’m having to stay in your parents’ room.

    I need to talk to you.

    TRAVIS

    I’m going to enjoy Jake Jones.

    Dan looked at Jill, again. Jill and Marty turn their chairs around to face Jake Jones. Travis looks around for Liz but does not see her.

    Jake enters the stage. The audience applauds.

    JAKE

    Hello, Everyone. Thanks for coming out tonight. I ’m Jake Jones and I’m glad to be here

    celebrating the holidays with you.

    APPLAUSE

    JAKE

    Mrs. Annabelle asked me to remind you that Saturday night is the annual holiday

    hayride. You will tour the decorated houses that competed for Chamber of

    Commerce awards as well as the park with all its holiday lights. The hayride starts

    in front of the inn at 6:00pm and every hour on the hour. Last ride begins at 9:00PM.

    Also, don’t forget the Scavenger Hunt in the morning at 9:00AM in the lobby. $1,500

    is a big prize. Good luck/

    The crowd yells and applauds.

    Jake begins singing. Liz steps into the office. Sam follows.

    Scene INT SAM’S OFFICE NIGHT

    SAM

    I know you are upset, but I advise you to be open-minded.

    LIZ

    Did you get a good look at that woman? She could be a model for a glamorous

    magazine.

    SAM

    She is beautiful, but she may have the personality of a porcupine.

    Liz stared at Sam and then laughed.

    LIZ

    I don’t know why I thought someone like Travis could be attracted to me.

    SAM

    I watched your man and he didn’t act like he cared for the lady in red.

    LIZ

    Well, it’s reality check time for me. If she is here all week with him, he

    won’t have time for me.

    SAM

    You need to be patient. See what happens.

    LIZ

    (Liz sighs.) Did you see how every man in that room turned and looked when

    she walked in. That doesn’t happen when I walk in the room.

    SAM

    Listen to me. When you come in here, the men look at you. You don’t see

    it because you are not looking for attention. That lady in red craves it.

    LIZ

    Thanks for being my friend. I’m going to believe that lie because it makes

    me feel better. Lawrence Bradford is proud of you because you are still

    taking care of his girl.

    (Hearing applause.) SAM

    Got to go. Stay in here. lock the door.

    LIZ

    Do not worry. I will.

    ANNABELLE

    (Annabelle walks into the office, using her key.) What are you doing in here? Hiding?

    LIZ

    You might say that!

    ANNABELLE

    This place is packed. I knew he would draw a crowd. Sam said tomorrow night is

    almost sold out.

    LIZ

    What can I say? Some people don’t recognize good music.

    ANNABELLE

    (Annabelle shrugged.) Everyone deserves a second chance, Sweetheart.

    LIZ

    I disagree in this case, but I will speak to him, just for you.

    ANNABELLE

    That’s my forgiving daughter speaking. Thank you. So, when are you

    going to step outside this office.

    LIZ

    I will watch the last half.

    ANNABELLE

    Good. Everything is running smoothly. I think I will call it a night. I have to be

    up early for the scavenger hunt. See you tomorrow.

    LIZ

    Love you.

    (Annabelle leaves. Liz leans back in office chair and falls asleep.)

    Scene INT THE RED FOX LOUNGE NIGHT

    The audience applauds. Jake leaves the stage. First half completed. Travis leaves the reserved table and heads to the bar. He goes to the end and approaches Sam about helping solve a problem.

    TRAVIS

    I was wondering. Are you close to the owners of the Bradford Inn? Or do you

    know someone who has connections?

    SAM

    What do you need?

    TRAVIS

    My ex-wife showed up thinking she was going to stay with me, and now she

    needs a room and this place is full. I am not going to allow her to ruin my parents’

    Christmas. I will stay in a closet as long as it has a bathroom.

    SAM

    Let me see what I can do?

    Sam goes to the phone and returns in a few minutes. Travis looks for Sarah.

    SAM (CONT)

    Ms. Annabelle’s son is in France. You can stay in his apartment. They are

    getting it ready. I’ll have the keys by the end of the concert.

    TRAVIS

    Can we keep this a secret between us. If my mother knows where I am

    sleeping, the world knows where I am sleeping. You understand?

    SAM

    Just between us.

    TRAVIS

    You just saved my Christmas holiday.

    (They shake hands and Travis returns to his table. The group is talking about the

    concert. Travis smiles as he looks at Marty and Jill. They smile back at him.)

    Liz comes out of the office to tell Sam she is leaving for the night. Two stools are on stage.

    Jake enters the stage and moves into the lights. The audience applauds.

    JAKE

    To begin the last segment, I’ want my high school sweetheart, Lizzy, to join

    me on the stage. Let’s give Lizzy a hand.

    People begin to applaud. Some of the locals know her and yell.

    Liz stops and looks at Sam and shakes her head.

    SAM

    The locals know you. You have to go up there. If you don’t, it will be bad

    for business.

    Lizzy walks to the stage and stands next to Jake. He asks her to sit on the extra stool.

    Travis looks at “Sarah” and pays close attention to what is happening.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    Does Sarah have a twin? She didn’t mention it.

    JAKE

    Lizzy and I sang as duo through four years of high school and won many

    awards. Didn’t we?

    Lizzy does not respond, just looks at Jake.

    JAKE (CONT)

    This summer I wrote a song about our high school love. This is the first time I am

    singing this song in public.

    Jake debuts his song

    When he finishes his song, he looks at Lizzy. She smiles at him.

    LIZ

    (whispering) Don’t ever pull this stunt again! I will not attend another concert.

    Liz flashes a hug smile and leaves the stage as the audience applauds. As she is exiting, she realizes Jake said her real name. She stops briefly, thinking about Travis but is afraid to look at him. She heads to Sam.

    Jake smiles and begins his next song.

    SAM

    You handled that well. I had no idea what he was up to. I will talk to

    him after the concert.

    LIZ
    Don’t bother. I told him to stay away and not do that stunt again.

    SAM

    I’m sorry.

    LIZ

    I have the world’s biggest headache. I’m going to my apartment. Forget

    about my new friend. It’s over now. I’m not interested in him either.

    SAM

    I would like to talk to you about that.

    LIZ

    I don’t want to think about men for a while.

    SAM

    Okay. Go rest. See you tomorrow.

    Travis sees “Sarah” talking to the bartender and then she leaves. She doesn’t look his way.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    Lizzy lied to me. We talked about Jake Jones and she never mentioned she

    was in a relationship with him in high school. She is probably still in love

    with him.

    Travis looked at Becca who eyes were glued to Jake Jones.

    TRAVIS (V.O)

    Looks like I have been fooled by another Becca. Liz lied within thirty minutes

    of meeting me. One dressed in red. The other dressed in green. AT least, the two

    wore Christmas colors. Maybe I should head home.

    Travis leaned back in his chair.

    TRAVIS (CONT (V.)

    I can’t go home. It would ruin Mom’s holiday. At least, she and dad

    are not stuck with Becca.

    Sam watches Travis and his family.

    SAM

    They looked like a good family. There’s something about Travis. He seems to

    care about people. That reminds me of Liz.

    The phone rings.

    SAM (CONT)

    Sam here.

    ANNABELLE

    Did Jake sing his song about Liz?

    SAM

    Yes. You knew about that?

    ANNABELLE

    I went backstage tonight before the concert. Jake told me about the song

    about Liz. Wasn’t that romantic?

    SAM

    Was asking her onstage Jake’s idea or yours?

    ANNABELLE

    I thought about it at the last minute. He loved the idea.

    SAM

    Annabelle!

    ANNABELLE

    I’m thinking about blocking out two hours on the February fourteenth chapel

    reservation calendar for their wedding.

    SAM

    Annabelle!

    ANNABELLE

    I know they belong together. They have such history.

    SAM

    Stop! Liz does not love Jake. Remove this idea from your brain.

    ANNABELLE

    All I want is what is best for my daughter. I feel good about this.

    SAM

    You want to put money on that “feel good” situation?

    ANNABELLE

    How much?

    SAM

    $100

    ANNABELLE

    I accept that bet. Liz will be married on February fourteenth.

    She cancels the call.

    SAM (V.O.)

    (Sam laughs and goes to a customer.) The bartender knows everything.

    The concert ends. Everyone stands and applauds. Travis walks toward Sam to get the key

    to the apartment and. The family exits. Becca goes to Jake to introduce herself.

    BECCA

    Hello, I’m Becca. I loved your concert. My boyfriend is a big fan of yours.

    JAKE

    That guy sitting beside you?

    BECCA

    Yes.

    JAKE

    After that concert, I need a drink. Would you like to join me?

    BECCA

    I would love to. Why don’t we sit at our table.

    JAKE

    Would you like a drink?

    BECCA

    I want is a bottle of water.

    JAKE

    Sam, a beer and a bottle of water, please.

    BECCA

    So you write all of your songs?

    JAKE

    Yeah!

    BECCA

    I loved the song about your high school sweetheart.

    JAKE

    WE were close all through high school. And then, she went

    to college and I became famous.

    BECCA

    As well as rich, I assume.

    Sam delivers the drinks to the table.

    JAKE

    I’d done well with my music.

    BECCA

    But never married?

    JAKE

    No.

    BECCA

    Do you have something against marriage?

    JAKE

    No. It takes a special person to live with a famous singer.

    Right now my focus is looking for investors. I have a project

    that will make millions.

    BECCA

    I know people with money.

    JAKE

    Maybe we need to talk.

    BECCA

    I think that’s a great idea. I don’t know my schedule for

    tomorrow, but I would like to meet with you and listen

    to your presentation.

    Jake

    Has anyone ever told you red is your color?

    BECCA

    Many times.

    Travis walks in and sees Becca with Jake Jones. Jake sees Travis entering and stands up.

    Travis

    I’m Travis. I enjoyed your concert. I have all your CD’s.

    JAKE

    Thanks, I’m glad you had a good time.

    TRAVIS

    Becca, you can stay in my room tonight. Here is key card.

    Jake looks at Travis and then at Becca.

    BECCA

    Thanks.

    TRAVIS

    You, guys enjoy your visit.

    Travis leaves and heads for his apartment. Jakes does not know what to say.

    BECCA

    Don’t worry about Travis. I will tell him about your investment opportunity.

    JAKE

    Okay.

    BECCA

    I am hungry. I did not get to eat dinner tonight.

    JAKE

    There’s a café downtown that stays open until one.

    BECCA

    Let me run up and get my coat and I’ll meet you in fifteen minutes

    in the lobby.

    As Becca strolls out of the lounge, Jake stares at her figure.

    JAKE

    Maybe I don’t have to marry Lizzy. Becca may be the ticket back to

    the top.

    BECCA (V.O.)

    I know he watched me as I walked out. I look good in this red dress. Jake

    even said so. He needs a wife like me. He is famous, has money. I may not

    need Travis. I may be the next Ms. Jake Jones if I play my cards right. I wonder

    what made Travis change his mind. (She grins.) The red dress did it.

    What I learned from this assignment is the process is easy, but I think I am too detailed as far as ideas, too many scenes. I may need to delete some of the incidents. too many levels. I’m trying to write without working on vocab, grammar corrections, etc

    Scene INT MARTY MATHIS’ SUITE DAY

    Marty, Jill and Becca adjust their plan, due to early arrival of Dan and Charlie.

    SPLIT screen phone call

    MARTY

    ( Whispering) Mom, are you okay? IS Dad mad at us?

    JILL

    Hello, Dear. Of course, we would love to go shopping with you. I’ll, ugh,

    we’ll be ready in five minutes.

    MARTY

    Elevator!

    JILL

    Okay, Dear

    Scene INT MEZANEENE CAFÉ DAY

    Jill, Becca and Marty are strategizing.

    MARTY

    Did you tell Dad what’s going on?

    JILL

    No, the plan is a secret. We have to make adjustments.

    MARTY

    What are we going to do?

    JILL

    (Thinking) We have to change the dinner plans. Becca, you arrive

    at 7:10 in the restaurant. Travis will not make a scene in front of

    Dad and Charlie.

    The bellhop enters the café and gets a drink and chips, goes to a table near the ladies.

    MARTY

    Then what?

    JILL

    After dinner, I will suggest we go on a carriage ride.

    MARTY

    That’s a great idea. You and Dad get in one. Charlie and I

    in one and Becca and Travis in the last one.

    JILL

    If he balks at the idea when we get there,( to Becca), you grab

    his hand and say, “Let’s ride together in case I have to go home

    tomorrow.”

    BECCA

    I got it.

    JILL

    This will be your opportunity to talk to him about the future.

    BECCA

    I understand. I will persuade him, even if it takes desperate measures.

    MARTY

    And if things go well, you could suggest you guys walk and shop after dinner.

    The stores on Main Street stay open until ten.

    JILL

    Good thinking, Marty. Does everyone understand the new plan.

    MARTY

    What if something goes wrong again?

    JILL

    What can go wrong? All we are doing tonight is eating dinner.

    BECCA

    It’s simple and I will make it work. I need to run to the pharmacy

    and get a few things.

    JILL

    Good, I need coffee.

    MARTY

    Me, too. Wait! You told Dad we were going shopping today.

    JILL
    Yes, I did. Didn’t I. We are forced to go shopping. I think I will buy

    something expensive to teach my husband not to surprise me.

    MARTY

    Let’s go!

    The bellhop writes notes on a pad. “Three women have a plan. need materials from pharmacy. want to teach husband a lesson.”

    Scene INT TRAVIS’ SUITE

    Travis receives Jake Jones tickets and changes dinner plans.

    Travis calls his mother.

    TRAVIS

    Dad ? When did you get here?

    Dad

    Charlie and I caught an earlier flight. We got here about two hours

    ago.

    Travis

    Good. I’m so glad you are here tonight. Guess what I have in my hands?

    Dan

    I hope it’s duck tape I can use the next time your mother screams.

    TRAVIS

    Mother is screaming?

    DAN

    Our early arrival shocked her for some reason.

    TRAVIS

    This is better than duck tape for mom’s mouth.

    DAN

    What did you buy?

    TRAVIS

    I have six tickets to the Jake Jones concert tonight in the lounge. Free tickets

    How did you get those?

    TRAVIS

    I met a salesman on the train and she was able to get these tickets

    for me. We need to change our dinner time from seven to six.

    DAN

    I’ll let everyone know. Meet you in the restaurant at six.

    TRAVIS

    The concert starts at eight and I want to get there early to

    find our seats.

    DAN

    I’m glad you are in such high spirits, Son.

    TRAVIS

    Nothing can spoil this day. I going to a Jake Jones concert.

    Scene INT DAN HARVELLE’S SUITE DAY

    Split screen.

    Phone call between Dan and Jill, Jill is in a store.

    DAN

    Hey, are you spending all my money?

    JILL

    Yes, Dear.

    DAN

    I have good news.

    JILL

    DAN

    Travis has acquired tickets to the Jake Jones concert tonight.

    JILL

    Oh, that’s wonderful. He loves that guy.

    DAN

    Which means we are eating dinner at six instead of seven.

    JILL

    Oh, my!!

    DAN

    Is that a problem?

    JILL

    No, Dear. We will be back at the inn in a few minutes.

    Jill immediately attempts to call Becca who does not answer.

    JILL

    I have to call Becca. Change in plans. She is not answering.

    MARTY

    What do you mean? Change in plans?

    JILL

    Did Becca have her phone with her in the café?

    MARTY

    Yes, I think so. What’s happened?

    JILL

    Where did she say she was going?

    MARTY

    To a pharmacy. Please tell me why we need to find Becca?

    (Jill looks in her purse for the City of Wellington brochure. She stops to call Becca

    Looks again for the brochure. Finds it.)

    MARTY

    Tell me what happened to the plan?

    Travis got tickets to the Jake Jones concert tonight. We are eating

    dinner at six not seven.

    MARTY

    I’ll take the south side of Main Street and you take the north. Look

    in the stores especially the pharmacy. How many are there?

    JILL
    This brochure shows two. One on each side.

    MARTY

    Okay. Stay calm. We will find her.

    JILL

    Yes.

    MARTY

    What is the new plan?

    JILL
    Tell her to come at 6:10 to the restaurant.

    MARTY

    It’s almost five o’clock. We need to hurry.

    Scene EXT MAIN STREET. (IT IS SNOWING) DAY

    Split screen. Marty is searching on one screen and Jill is searching the stores on the north side.

    Jill and Marty meet at the end of several blocks.

    JILL

    I don’t remember ever being this cold. You didn’t find her either?

    MARTY

    She shakes her head. She is freezing. They walk toward the inn.

    JILL

    She is not in our room.

    MARTY

    She is not in ours.

    JILL

    Forget plan B.

    MARTY

    This makes me nervous.

    JILL
    I will leave a note in her suitcase telling her to call us ASAP.

    MARTY

    Okay. My hair looks awful. I’m cold. I hope I don’t catch a cold.

    JILL

    I will never complain about hot weather again. Oh No!!

    MARTY

    JILL

    My phone just died.

    They enter the Bradford Inn.

    Scene INT THE BRADFORD INN RESTAURANT NIGHT

    Jill, Dan, and Travis are seated at the restaurant. Soon after Charlie and Marty arrive, Annabelle makes

    big announcement about Christmas activities for the next two days. Marty has communicated with Becca. The family begins the meal with the salads placed at each seat. Server move around offering, coffee, tea and water.

    MARTY

    Sorry, we are running a little late. I had to dry my hair. The table scape is beautiful.

    Marty glances toward Jill and gives her a thumbs up.

    JILL

    Christmas decorations are beautiful in this hotel. (calling a server) Server?

    SERVER

    Yes?

    JILL

    Why are the Christmas trees in those corners not decorated?

    SERVER

    The children are invited to eat breakfast with Ms. Annabelle each day and make

    ornaments and other decorations for the trees and the brunch centerpieces.

    JILL

    What a neat idea. That gives parents a small break from the children.

    SERVER

    They sign their creations and Sunday, when Santa visits, the children show their

    decorations to him as he tours the restaurant.

    MARTY

    I love that. Sweetheart, we will bring our children here for at least one

    holiday so they can have that experience.

    DAN

    And when can we expect these grandchildren?

    CHARLE

    I promise you will be the first to know. (He winks at Marty.) Travis,

    I know you are excited about the concert. I’m surprised a big

    country singer would be having a concert in a small town like this.

    TRAVIS

    This is his hometown. He’s returns here for Christmas.

    CHARLIE

    That’s good luck for you. You have all his CD’s don’t you?

    JILL
    I can testify to that because I had to listen to every one of them last

    summer by the pool when Travis came to stay a week.

    TRAVIS

    I was trying to improve your country culture.

    They laugh at that comment. The sound of bells is heard. Annabelle Bradford enters the restaurant on a rolling stage. The evening buffet is on the front of the stage. All the servers gather in the corners of the restaurant and stand still.

    ANNABELLE

    Before we serve our main course, I want to draw your attention to our Christmas

    contest that starts tomorrow at 9AM in the main lobby.

    Becca enters the room but steps aside the main entrance and listens to Annabelle.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    This scavenger hunt is for an individual guest or a family as a group. The art students

    who attend Wellington College Prep School decorated Christmas ornaments. They

    have the letters WCP on the ornaments. When you find a WCP ornament, you and

    those who are registered for your suite will get a free breakfast in the restaurant.

    The audience applauds.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    Three ornaments were chosen for their outstanding designs. One has the numeral 1

    on it. Whoever finds it first, receives $500

    The crowd cheers.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    The one with numeral 2 on it is worth $1,000.

    The crowd gets louder.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    The one ornament with the numeral 3 gets ( she pauses) $1,500.

    The audience screams loudly.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    Beware, there are some decoy ornaments with numbers on them but they do

    not have “WCP”. When you find one of the prize ornaments, take it to the lobby

    immediately. See you in the morning at nine o’clock sharp in the lobby.

    The crowd applauds.

    ANNABELLE (CONT)

    Now, welcome to our Friday night feast prepared by our own Chef Miguel.

    Enjoy. Servers will take your orders: Vegetarian, Beef, Pork or Chicken. The

    dessert tables on the sides. Choose your own dessert.

    Scene: INT INN HALLWAY

    Becca exits the restaurant. She begins searching for best hiding places in the main corridor.

    BECCA (V.O.)

    I need to find that third ornament. That will buy my ticket home. I don’t care

    about dinner. I need money now.

    She stops and looks behind potted plants.

    BECCA (CON”T) (V.O.)

    This is a great place to plant an ornament.

    She moves toward main lobby.

    BECCA (CON”T) (V.O.)

    When I set this plan into action, I told Jill what to do. She is not following my plan.

    I’m broke. I need to be Ms. Travis Harvelle again.

    Becca’s phone rings. It’s Marty. She looks at it and turns her phone off.

    Scene: INT RESTAURANT BATHROOM NIGHT

    Marty and Jill try to connect with Becca who did not show up for dinner.

    JILL

    Leave Becca a message. Tell her to go to the lounge at 7:55. Find our table and sit

    at the exact beginning of the concert.

    MARTY

    Where is your phone?

    JILL
    It’s charging. We have to go back to our table. The guys

    want to go straight to the lounge.

    MARTY

    Have you noticed Travis looks happier?

    JILL

    Yes, Dan noticed it earlier, too. I hope the idea of reuniting with Becca is

    growing on him. I think it shocked him at first.

    Marty

    Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our plan worked. Travis would be

    happy again. Travis will never forget this Christmas because of us.

    Marty hugs Jill.

    Scene: INT LOBBY NIGHT

    Desk clerk and bellhop review notes on investigation of “Sarah”.

    DESK CLERK

    Have you found the missing “Sarah”?

    BELLHOP

    No, but something is not right with Suite 210. The woman was surprised

    when her husband showed up. She and two other women are always

    in a group talking about a plan.

    DESK CLERK

    What kind of plan?

    BELLHOP

    I try to get close, but the leader always gets quiet. Very strange.

    DESK CLERK
    Keep watching. Let’s meet every night to update each other.

    BELLHOP
    I’m on the case. (gives a thumbs up) Sarah will make a mistake.

    Lesson 13 ACT II Reaction to TP 1

    What I learned about this assignment is this was easy due to the preplanning and outlining. I wrote this in an hour. Of course, the coach may say I should have spent more time on this trash. Ha Ha.

    TP : Travis learns part of what his meddling mother is planning.

    Scene INT LIZ’S CAR DAY

    Liz drives away from the parking garage and sees Travis waiting for Bradford Inn shuttle. She pulls over.

    LIZ

    Good morning. Want a lift to the Bradford Inn?

    TRAVIS

    Yes, thanks.

    Travis puts suitcase in back seat and gets in front seat.

    TRAVIS

    I looked for you early this morning. I wanted to tell you how much fun I had last night.

    LIZ

    I had a good time, too. Jerry and Joan were a cute couple.

    TRAVIS

    I agree. You were right. This town is pretty at Christmas. And a shower of light snow is

    greeting us. I wonder where my mother and sister are at this time.

    Liz and Travis laughed.

    LIZ

    When this town began, the citizens planned for growth. In the business district, there are no homes. They planned the parks and even the arrangement of the types of business for main street. The women interrupted the meeting and demanded to be heard. They asked that motels and hotels be on each end of the business district. The original planners left a space in the center for a huge park, big enough that two years ago, the town built a parking garage on part of it.

    TRAVIS

    That is phenomenal. I wish big cities had planned that well.

    LIZ

    When you leave Bradford Inn, turn left and you can walk down one side of main street and

    go back on the other side and visit all of the shops. There are coffee shops on each side and

    a few restaurants near the park.

    TRAVIS

    I’m impressed. Do you moonlight as a tour guide?

    LIZ

    No, I just love the history of this little bit of heaven.

    As Liz drives, Travis looks at all the Christmas decorations.

    TRAVIS

    I think there are more decorations up since I was here last time. This is awesome.

    Travis looks at Liz.

    TRAVIS (CONT)

    For the first time, I’m glad I came to Vermont for Christmas.

    Liz looks at Travis.

    LIZ

    I’m happy you came, too. Well, this is the Bradford Inn.

    Travis looks at the building and doesn’t recognize it. He glances toward the big sign on the snow-covered lawn.

    LIZ

    What do you think of it?

    TRAVIS

    Mom was right. It’s beautiful. Are you going to park?

    LIZ

    No, I’m going to another area. Merry Christmas!

    TRAVIS

    Same to you. . Thanks for the ride.

    Scene EXT OUSIDE BRADFORD INN DAY

    Travis leaves the car and walks on the sidewalk. He stops when he remembers he didn’t get Sarah’s phone number.

    TRAVIS (CONT)

    Heck, I don’t even know her last name. but she must be staying here. I’ll find her.

    Travis looks at the exterior of the inn.

    TRAVIS (CONT)

    Whoever the new owners are, they know what they are doing. And Sarah is staying here. This may be the best holiday yet.

    SCENE INT. BRADFORD INN LOBBY DAY

    Travis enters the lobby. In the middle stands the biggest holiday tree he has ever seen, It is filled with huge ornaments. There stands Mom and Marty gazing at the tree. Then Travis stops and stares at his ex-wife, Becca standing beside his sister. Mom turns and sees Travis first. Travis lowers his suitcase to the ground.

    JILL HARVELL

    Travis, we are so glad you have arrived. We ran into Becca who plans to stay for the holidays.

    How was the train ride. (She hugs Travis.)

    Travis continues to stare at Becca.

    Marty hugs Travis. When Becca moves to hug him, Travis speaks.

    TRAVIS

    Hello, Becca.

    BECCA

    It’s good to see you, Travis. I think it is destiny that we are here at the same time.

    TRAVIS

    I’m going to check in. I will catch up with you guys later. Oh, when is Dad coming?

    JILL HARVELLE

    He and Charlie will arrive in the morning.

    Travis moves toward the registration desk. Jill stops him.

    JILL Harvelle

    Sweetheart, we have a small issue.

    TRAVIS

    What?

    JILL HARVELLE
    That are no more rooms.

    TRAVIS

    I don’t have a room. We reserved this place before Thanksgiving.

    JILL HARVELLE

    No, Becca doesn’t have a room.

    Travis shrugs his shoulders. He grabs his suitcase and heads to the front desk.

    DESK CLERK

    How can I help you, Sir?

    TRAVIS

    I’m Travis Harvelle. I have a reservation.

    DESK CLERK

    Yes, I see. I need a major credit card, your driver’s license, please.

    Travis provides all the items requested.

    DESK CLERK (CONT)

    Please sign here. These cards allow you into your suite. This is a City of Wellington map. This

    brochure informs you of the activities offered in our hotel as well as community. This sheet is

    our Christmas celebration schedule.

    TRAVIS

    Thank you.

    DESK CLERK

    The restaurant offers three meals a day. The café on the mezzanine offers sandwiches, short

    order meals from 7 AM to 11:00pm.The RED FOX Lounge is open from four until 1:00 AM.

    We offer a free shuttle on the odd hours beginning at 9AM to the skis resort which is thirty

    minutes away. Do you have any questions, Mr. Harvelle?

    TRAVIS

    Has a lady named Sarah with beautiful, emerald eyes checked in recently?

    DESK CLERK

    No, Sir. These belong to you. (handing Travis his card and driver’s license) Call the front desk

    if you need anything. Have a wonderful stay and Merry Christmas from the Bradford Inn.

    TRAVIS

    Merry Christmas to you, (Travis stops and asks) Can I leave a message for Sarah, She

    will be checking in soon, I know.

    DESK CLERK

    Of course, Here is paper and a pen. We will hold your note until Sarah arrives. The

    bellhop will take your bags to your room.

    After Travis writes a note to Sarah, he and the bellhop move toward the elevators, Jill, along with the ladies, approach Travis again.

    JILL HARVELLE

    Travis, we still have an issue. Becca doesn’t have a room to stay in.

    Travis looked at his sweet mother, ignoring Becca.

    TRAVIS

    If I remember, the suite has a living room with a TV as well as the bedroom.

    She can stay with one of you tonight.

    Travis turns to Becca.

    TRAVIS (CONT)

    Or the train leaves in about two hours. The Bradford Inn shuttle can take you there. Have a safe trip home.

    Jill and Marty gasp at the turn of events.

    TRAVIS (CONT)

    Mom, see you at dinner. Let’s plan to eat at seven.

    As Travis and bellhop enter the elevator A, Jill, Marty and Becca stare as the door closes.

    Marty

    Mom, what are we going to do? This is not going as planned.

    JILL HARVELLE

    I don’t know.

    BECCA

    Don’t worry. I can stay with one of you tonight. He’ll come around, but I won’t join

    you for dinner. That will give you the opportunity to talk to him privately.

    JILL HARVELLE
    I believe that might be best, Dear. You can stay with me.

    Jill, Marty and Becca head to elevator B to go to their suites.

    Scene INT LOBBY REGISTRATION DESK DAY

    The desk clerk is searching for Sarah’s name on the reservation list.

    BELLHOP

    What’s wrong?

    DESK CLERK

    I searched the registration list and the reservation list three times for someone

    named Sarah. Not one person has that name.

    BELLHOP

    Maybe she is using a middle name or a nick name?

    DESK CLERK

    I don’t know. If you hear the name Sarah, find out who she is and report

    back to me. We need all the facts before we contact security or the administration.

    BELLHOP

    I got this. You can count on me. You know I am enrolled in the school of criminology

    at the university.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN RESTAURANT DAY

    Liz enters the restaurant, seeking Annabelle.

    LIZ

    Hey, Mom.

    ANNABELLE

    Wow! Your eyes are sparkling in that green sweater.

    LIZ

    Thanks. The place looks fabulous.

    ANNABELLE

    Can you believe the Main Street Florist was able to get this many small poinsettias

    for our tables? I move them to the greenhouse every night, but it’s worth it.

    LIZ

    What are these for?

    ANNABELLE

    The kids color them during breakfast and the parents stick this piece on the back

    which allows the Christmas to stand up. The child autographs their creation and

    it is the centerpiece for the table at breakfast. We placed a temporary shelf on

    that wall where they are stored all day as a decoration for people to view at lunch

    and dinner.

    LIZ

    What a great idea.

    ANNABELLE

    Yesterday after breakfast, this set of twins. I think they are about six years old.

    They asked me what time I arrived for breakfast every morning. I told them I came

    at seven. They showed up today with mom wanting to help me place then on the

    tables for the breakfast crowd.

    LIZ

    That is a sweet story. We need to ask the mom if we can do a press release on

    them.

    ANNABELLE

    Okay. I’ll take care of that tomorrow.

    LIZ

    And when Santa comes on Sunday afternoon, he needs to walk with the children

    down to the restaurant for their treat. They can show their decorated trees to him.

    ANNABELLE

    I love it. We make a great team, don’t we? (She hugged Liz.) Jake was in the lounge

    several hours ago. Did you get to see him?

    LIZ

    He is sure problem. Remember? I don’t plan to see him.

    ANNABELLE

    The tickets went on sale thirty minutes ago and Sam said tonight’s concert is almost

    sold out.

    LIZ

    Really! How did that happen?

    ANNABELLE

    Jake is handling all publicity through the radio and online. He asked me to tell you

    he wants to see you before the first performance.

    LIZ

    I need to go see Sam. Do you want to go over the new contracts this afternoon?

    ANNABELLE

    No, just make sure the dates on my wall calendar in the office. You can tell us

    about your trip at the next admin meeting. Good job!

    LIZ

    Thanks.

    Scene INT HOTEL HALLWAY DAY

    LIZ calls Sam on her walkie as she enters the hallway to the lounge.

    LIZ

    Sam?

    SAM

    Hello, Stranger. I was wondering when you were going to check in with your best pal.

    LIZ

    Are you in the lounge? I need to see you.

    SAM

    I’m in the office.

    LIZ

    Is it safe?

    SAM

    Yes, he left about thirty minutes ago.

    LIZ

    On the way.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY REGISTRATION DESK DAY

    Dan Harvelle and Charlie Mathis enter and go to the registration desk.

    DESK CLERK

    How can I help you, sir?

    DAN HARVELLE

    We need to check in. We’re a day early, but out wives are already registered.

    DESK CLERK

    How is the room listed?

    DAN HARVELLE

    Try Dan or Jill Harvelle.

    DESK CLERK

    Yes, I will need a copy of your driver’s license only.

    Dan presents his driver’s license to the desk clerk. Desk clerk makes a copy.

    DESK CLERK

    Everything is in order, sir. Room Suite 210

    Charlie steps up and hands the clerk his driver’s license. The desk clerk makes a copy and hands it back to Charlie.

    CHARLIE

    I should be registered as Charlie or Marty Mathis.

    DESK CLERK

    Yes, I found your name. Please sign here. Your suite is 211. The bellhop will escort you

    to your suites. Merry Christmas from the Bradford Inn.

    The clerk hits the bell and the bellhop comes out of a room and grabs everyone’s bags

    Thank you.

    Scene INT THE RED FOX LOUNGE DAY

    Liz enters Sam’s office.

    SAM

    What took you so long?

    LIZ

    I stopped by the break room and grabbed a cookie and a bottle of water. I forgot to

    eat lunch. These are good. I brought you one.

    SAM

    Your mom didn’t get my opinion on Jake. I’m sorry.

    LIZ

    I knew you had nothing to do with it? If I was in her shoes, I would probably do the

    same thing. Obviously, her decision was a smart one. I understand you are about sold

    out of tickets for the first concert.

    SAM

    Yep, tickets are going fast for all four nights. I’m worried.

    LIZ

    Worried about what?

    SAM

    Losing my mind, listening to Jake Jones four nights in a row.

    LIZ

    (Liz laughed and slapped Sam’s hand) I love you, Sam.

    SAM

    If only a woman my age would tell me that.

    LIZ

    I’m going to call your wife and tell her what you said. How are those concert

    tickets numbered?

    SAM

    General admission tickets are not numbered. Reserved tickets have a

    table number. Those tables are in the front and they are more expensive.

    LIZ

    Are all the tables sold out?

    SAM

    No, we have one left for tonight.

    LIZ

    I want that one. I’ll need six tickets.

    SAM

    You are going to a Jake Jones concert?

    LIZ

    (Liz chuckles) No, I met a handsome man on the train. He’s here with his family for

    the holidays. He loves Jake Jones. I would like to give him a special table in the

    front center.

    SAM

    Before we entertain this crazy idea of yours, I want to remind you,

    about my training session regarding working with married men.

    LIZ

    He is not married. He is here with his parents and sister.

    SAM

    Okay, if this new friend loves Jake Jones, he must have a screw loose

    somewhere.

    LIZ

    There is that issue, but (She flashes a big smile.)

    SAM

    You like this new guy.

    LIZ

    I think I do. I can’t stop thinking about him. It has to be a secret.

    He has a meddling mom like me. And then, there is Jake. I don’t

    know what he is up to. Jake wants to see me before the concert.

    SAM

    Yes, he asked me to give you that message. Are you going

    to meet him?

    LIZ

    No, I’m avoiding him just like I did last year.

    SAM

    Alright, I’ll keep him away as long as I can.

    LIZ

    Thanks. How about those tickets for my new friend.

    SAM

    His parents, sister and your friend. That’s four tickets.

    LIZ

    His sister is married. That makes five.

    SAM

    There’s an extra ticket left.

    LIZ

    Since he has an extra ticket, he might invite me. That will let me know

    if he is interested in me.

    Sam goes to his filing cabinet, pulls out a folder, places six tickets in an envelope and gives it

    to Liz.

    SAM

    You are willing to sit through a country music concert to catch this guy?

    Liz looks at Sam and winks at him.

    SAM

    You know I have to approve this man before you marry him.

    LIZ

    I don’t think we have to worry about that decision this holiday season.

    SAM

    Good, because I spent all my money on my wife’s Christmas present and

    I don’t have enough money to buy a wedding gift.

    Liz hugs Sam.

    Scene INT JILL HARVELLE’S SUITE DAY

    Dan knocks on the door to his suite. Jill opens the door and screams. The bellhop

    drops the suitcase and jumps in front of Dan to protect the screaming female.

    BELLHOP

    Mam, according to our records this gentleman claims to be your husband.

    Do you want to press charges against him for stealing your husband’s identity.

    JILL HARVELLE
    That’s my husband.

    The bellhop turns around and looks at Dan who is shaking his head.

    BELLHOP

    Sir, does she usually scream when she sees you?

    DAN HARVELLE

    Only when I surprise her. (He winks at Jill.)

    Dan walks in and kisses Jill and turns to the sofa and sees Becca sitting there. He

    looks at his wife.

    JILL HARVELLE

    I can explain, Sweetheart.

    Scene: INT REGISTRATION DESK DAY

    No one is at the main desk. Liz leaves the envelope in the delivery basket and attaches a

    note to explain about the tickets. she signs the note from SARAH.

    LIZ

    I don’t know Travis’ last name or his room number. What was I thinking?

    She moves to the computer and checks registration list. She finds Travis Harvelle.

    Liz writes Travis’ room number on the note and attaches it to the ticket envelope.

    She goes out the back exit door. The elevator B door opens and the bellhop

    approaches the main desk. He is very nervous.

    The desk clerk returns and sees the note from Sarah. He looks around to see if

    anyone is watching the main desk.

    DESK CLERK

    Takes this note and envelope to Room 214. It’s from Sarah. I was accurate.

    We have a nonpaying guest on the premises.

    Are you okay?

    BELLHOP

    Are there any group meetings scheduled here this late in the year.

    DESK CLERK

    Like what group?

    BELLHOP

    Like a group for people who need psychotic help.

    DESK CLERK

    Have you met some people like that?

    BELLHOP

    In room 210.

    Maybe Sarah is in that group. Be on guard. We must find her.

    I’m on the case.

    The bellhop heads to elevator A, studying every person he meets.

    Lesson 12: Finish Act I

    What I learned from this assignment is the plan is easy, but I recognize lack of subtext. I will need to dig deeper into the characters. I think I am better at novel writing than screenplay.

    Scene 1. INT TRAVIS HARVELLE’S KITCHEN DAY

    Travis grabs three water bottles, a vegetable tray and a plastic container of prepared sandwiches from refrigerator and places them in a soft thermal cooler. He packs a bag of potato chips, napkins, paper plates in a plastic bag and walks out the back door to the dock where his party barge is waiting.

    As he gets on the boat, he looks and sees his friends coming around the house, down the hill to the lake.

    They wave and walk faster. Travis lays out the snacks and hands each a bottle of water.

    TRAVIS

    I’m glad you could make it today, JJ. I’m leaving for a Christmas holiday with the family tomorrow

    and I wanted to discuss the renovations with you before I left. I’m glad you agreed to do the work.

    SYDNEE

    When JJ said we were coming out to the lake for a ride, I was so happy. Thanks for the invitation

    and the sandwiches. Tell me, where are you going for the holidays?

    TRAVIS

    Mother arranged for us to celebrate Christmas in Vermont. It’s weird.

    The party barge leaves the dock.

    JJ

    What’s weird about that? Vermont is beautiful at Christmas. I’ve seen pictures.

    TRAVIS

    My family always celebrates Christmas for a week in Orlando. Neither my mom nor my sister,

    Marty, don’t like cold weather. Any temperature less than fifty-five degrees is freezing to them.

    JJ

    Do they know how cold it gets in Vermont at Christmas?

    TRAVIS

    I told them. There is another reason I don’t’ want to go. I was married there at the same hotel

    where we are staying, five years ago this Christmas. Becca divorced me a year later.

    Sydnee

    That’s a little crazy. If you change your mind about going, you can spend the holidays with us

    at Wildflowers B & B. We have enough room for you.

    TRAVIS

    Mom has called me every night this week to make sure I get on the train tomorrow. I don’t know

    what she has planned, but it better be something better than the last time I went there.

    JJ

    Well, if it gets too bad, spend the day outside or inside a ski resort. Your family won’t be there.

    They’ll be by the fire. Margo told me you take this boat ride every day at 5:00PM.

    TRAVIS

    Yeah. I ride and relax. Play Jake Jones music or special holiday music for the people who live on the lake. I think about all my family and friends who are driving home in Orlando traffic on I-4, bumper to bumper. It takes an hour to get home, with all the horns blowing and cars stopped for wrecks. Sometimes I pause on the lake and say thanks for living in Madison County.

    JJ

    This is a peaceful place. Look people are coming out of their homes and a waving at us.

    SYDNEE

    I feel like I am the Queen of England as I greet my minions. This is fun.

    (Sydnee starts waving like the Queen of England.)

    TRAVIS

    The family who lives in that big brick home on the hill, had a wedding on the lawn. I drove around the lake that day and played the Love Boat theme. The bride and groom loved it.

    SYDNEE

    That sounds so sweet. So, you are a romantic at heart.

    TRAVIS

    I used to be. I’m not sure anymore. I learned a big lesson from Becca.

    Scene 2 INT JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA DAY

    Liz Bradford is rushing to catch the train to Vermont. She comes to a halt when she hears Jake Jones singing a Christmas song over the loud speaker. A gentleman runs into her from the back. She drops all her packages, phone. He helps her retrieve her things and she rushes forward. She runs into a Christmas Elf when she shifts her packages, knocks the elf down. It is plastic. A housekeeper assists her in gathering her things and placing the Christmas Elf in an upright position. She walks faster to avoid another crash.

    Phone rings.

    Split screen phone call

    LIZ

    Hello, Mom. I really don’t have time. I’m running late. I just arrived at the station and I’m trying to get on the train.

    ANNABELLE

    I was hoping you were already in your cabin, Dear.

    LIZ

    There was an accident on the Dames Point Bridge and I’m thankful I didn’t miss the train. What is wrong? I can tell in your voice there’s a problem.

    ANNABELLE

    The entertainment duo for the lounge called. They cancelled.

    LIZ

    They can’t do that. They are under contract.

    ANNABELLE

    They are both homebound sick with the flu.

    LIZ

    (As she hands the conductor her ticket) Don’t worry. I will check my contact list and get somebody.

    Jake Jones walks into Annabelle’s office. The country music star is home for the holidays. Annabelle sees the solution to her problem and smiles at him.

    (waving Jake to enter her office) Sweetheart, don’t worry. I think I may have the answer to our

    problem.

    Over the loud speaker: “ All Aboard”

    LIZ

    Mom, what are you thinking? Please wait until I get on the train. I am walking up the steps now. I

    can handle this.

    ANNABELLE

    Glad you are headed home. We will talk later. Bye, Love.

    LIZ

    Wait! We need to discuss our options. Mom? Are you there? Oh, no. What is she doing now, I wonder?

    Liz meanders down the corridor looking for cabin 36.

    LIZ

    I can’t worry about it now.

    Scene INT ANNABELLE’S OFFICE DAY

    ANNABELLE

    Jake, have a seat. Welcome home to Wellington and the Bradford Inn.

    JAKE

    Hello, Ms. Annabelle, it’s good to be home. I was hoping to see Lizzy today, but it sounds like she is on a business trip.

    ANNABELLE

    She’s getting on the train to come home. Will arrive some time tomorrow.

    JAKE

    I want to see her this trip home. I’ve been thinking about how I treated her after high school. made a mistake and I need to apologize to her

    ANNABELLE

    I’m glad to hear that, Jake.

    JAKE JONES

    I tried to talk to her last Christmas, but I could never catch up with her.

    ANNABELLE

    I believe she will want to talk to you, too. Liz is VP of Marketing now. Doing a wonderful job. How

    is the music business? I hear you are making big bucks.

    JAKE

    Going great. I wrote five new songs that will be recorded in the new year. My agent thinks this

    may be my biggest album yet.

    ANNABELLE

    Maybe you will win another Grammy.

    JAKE JONES

    How is everything at the inn?

    ANNABELLE

    Good, however, as of this morning, our holiday performers for the lounge are

    sick with the flu. I need an act for four days.

    JAKE

    I will be happy to do a concert for you. It will give me a chance to test my new music.

    ANNABELLE

    Jake, that would solve my problem. Are you sure?

    JAKE JONES

    I’ll pack that lounge every night. Tell Sam to order lots of tickets.

    ANNSBELLE

    I like it when we both win. I’ll give you the contract to read and you can bring it back in

    the morning if you like.

    JAKE JONES

    Jake Jones is performing at home. Don’t worry about the publicity. I’ll call the radio station and newspapers.

    ANNABELLE

    One less thing for Lizzy to do. I’ll leave that to you.

    JAKE

    Speaking of Lizzy, I need her phone number. I have something special planned for her

    during the holidays.

    ANNABELLE

    You know I can’t give you her number.

    JAKE JONES

    Yeah, I understand.

    ANNABELLE

    If you are sincere about apologizing to her, you will have to do this without my assistance.

    Before you leave, check in with Sam and let him know what you need.

    JAKE JONES

    I’ll will. I’m looking forward to doing this.

    ANNABELLE

    The community is going to be happy. You haven’t sang locally for a few years.

    The phone rings. It’s the restaurant supervisor. Annabelle answers. She waves bye. Jake leaves.

    ANNABELLE

    Hey. I’m on my way.

    Annabelle leans back in her chair and smiles. She looks at the big picture of her deceased husband, Lawrence, on the office wall.

    ANNABELLE

    Lawrence? Sometimes love works in strange ways. I believe our daughter is about to be happy again.

    Scene 3. INT THE HALLWAY OF THE TRAIN DAY

    Liz is balancing her packages, her computer and phone as she meanders through the passengers, traveling to her cabin. When she gets to cabin 36, she hears a deep voice talking on the phone in the cabin next to hers. His door is not closed.

    TRAVIS (deep voice)

    Yes, I’m on the train, but tell me again why we are spending the Christmas holidays at Bradford

    Inn. You know how I feel about that place?

    Liz pauses and takes her time getting the key in the door when “deep voice” says Bradford Inn. She enters but leaves the door slightly ajar to listen to gather more information.

    SPLIT phone conversation:

    JILL HARVELLE

    Your dad never gets to rest when we stay at home in Orlando. He needs to be away from that

    office. He is exhausted. We are familiar with the Bradford Inn and I feel it will be a good trip.

    TRAVIS

    You remember what happened there right before Christmas five years ago?

    JILL HARVELLE

    Don’t dwell on the past, Dear. You won’t believe this place. It’s fabulous! Marty and I

    walked every inch of the facility today.

    TRAVIS

    How deep is the snow?

    JILL HARVELLE

    I don’t know. We haven’t ventured out much. Did you bring warm clothes? It’s a little chilly.

    TRAVIS

    Yes. The train is departing from the station.

    Travis realizes his door is open. He closes it with his foot.

    I want you and Marty to go outside and practice making snowballs. We are going to have a family snowball fight while we stay at the lovely Bradford Inn.

    JILL HARVELLE

    Travis, you are teasing, right?

    TRAVIS

    See you tomorrow, Mom.

    Travis grabs a magazine he purchased at the depot and rests, looking out the window.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    I wish I knew what this trip is really about!

    Scene 4: INT LIZ’s CABIN DAY

    Liz organizes the cabin while she thinks about the man next door who dislikes the Bradford Inn.

    LIZ (V.O)

    Whatever the situation was, it happened before we purchased the inn. He’s still remembers it after five years.

    Liz opens her computer and reviews her contracts, hits SEND to Annabelle. She checks her

    business notebook and looks for entertainment acts for the holidays. She writes down a few

    names and numbers. She checks her phone contacts. She calls Annabelle.

    Split phone call

    ANNABELLE

    Hello.

    LIZ

    Okay, I have three groups that might be available for the holidays. They are great family

    entertainers.

    ANNABELLE
    That’s okay. I solved the problem. We’ll discuss when you arrive tomorrow afternoon.

    Enjoy your ride home. I’m late for the restaurant.

    LIZ

    What is the name of the group?

    ANNABELLE

    Trust me. It’s going to be fabulous! Relax. I got is covered.

    LIZ

    What kind of music do they sing?

    ANNABELLE

    A variety. Christmas music

    LIZ

    Is he a country music singer?

    Annabelle stares at her phone and grimaces.

    LIZ

    Did you hire Jake Jones? I’m sure he is home for the holidays and he always shows up at the inn.

    ANNABELLE

    Now, Liz, he has changed. He was delightful in my office.

    LIZ

    He put on an act for you.

    ANNABELLE

    We don’t have many options at this point. He was available and willing. And he will draw

    a crowd.

    LIZ

    I believe I could have found someone to fill the slot other than him.

    ANNABELLE

    He will be debuting five new songs on our stage. He will pack the lounge. We can’t let

    personal preferences affect business decisions. (She pauses)

    Liz looks out the window and stares at the scenery.

    ANNABELLE

    I believe you might want to re-consider your situation with that man.

    LIZ

    I have re-considered it every Christmas for seven years. It’s not going to happen. Jake

    must work with either Sam or you. I am out of the picture on this one.

    ANNABELLE

    Is this going to be a problem for you?

    LIZ

    No, Jake Jones is your and Sam’s problem. I’m going to the dining car and eat. Hugs

    and kisses. See you tomorrow.

    ANNABELLE

    Hugs and kisses to you, Sweetheart. Love you.

    Scene 5: INT THE RED FOX LOUNGE DAY

    Jake walks into the lounge and finds Sam, the long-time bartender and good friend of Liz.

    JAKE JONES

    Hey, Sam. Have you talked to Ms. Annabelle in the last few minutes?

    SAM

    (drying glasses) No, I’ve been stocking the bar. Why?

    JAKE JONES

    Your entertainment gig canceled. I’m the new act. I start tomorrow night.

    SAM

    Okay, what do you need?

    JAKE JONES
    Is it okay if I reset the lights?

    SAM

    Sure. We have a new sound system, too. The last few performers loved it. Its carries your

    voice to the back of the room. I have to open in ten minutes. Can you come tomorrow

    about ten and you can rehearse.

    Sounds like a winner. See you then. (turns to leave, but returns) I need to contact Lizzy. Will

    you give me her cell phone number?

    SAM

    Liz does not want you to have her number. I made a promise to her. Only a few select people

    have it.

    JAKE JONES

    When you see her, please tell her I want to talk to her before I sing Friday night.

    SAM

    I will give her your message.

    Jake left the lounge. Sam immediately text Liz about Jake.

    Scene : INT LIZ’S SLEEPER CAR NIGHT

    Liz Bradford meets Travis Harvelle. Liz tells him a lie.

    Liz checks the time. She combed her hair, grabs her folder. Sam texts her. She is reading the text when she opens the door and walks into a huge man’s chest. She drops her phone and notebook. Travis stoops down and picks her things up.

    TRAVIS

    Sorry. (reaching down to gather her things and Travis returns them to her.)

    LIZ

    I apologize. I travel this train all the time. I had something on my mind. Thank you.

    TRAVIS

    Headed to the dining car?

    LIZ

    Yes.

    Travis points in the right direction. Liz turns around and moves toward the dining car. Liz

    greeted people she met.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    Miss Emerald Eyes speaks to every person she meets. She must be in sales. She’s caring a

    notebook. Workaholic. Can’t even eat without taking notes. Her auburn hair is beautiful

    and it bounces every time she takes a step. Travis, this girl is trouble. Beautiful. Stay away

    from beautiful women. They lie.

    LIZ (V.O.)

    “Deep Voice” is very handsome. He has muscles. He’s probably a coach. He never speaks

    to people. He’s a snobbish coach. He reminds me of the picture Mom has of Rock Hudson.

    He walks a little too close to me, like he’s smelling my perfume or something. At least I am

    not thinking about Jake Jones.)

    LIZ

    Oh heck!

    TRAVIS

    Everything okay?

    LIZ

    Yes, I’m sorry. Everything is good.

    When they arrive at the dining car, there is only one table left.

    LIZ

    (looking over her shoulder) Would you like to share a table?

    TRAVIS

    Sounds like a winner. (Travis pulled her chair for her to sit)

    LIZ (V.O.)

    The handsome, snobbish coach has manners.

    LIZ

    Thank you.

    A server ran over and handed them menus.

    SERVER

    What would you like to drink?

    Jill

    I’ll have water.

    TRAVIS

    Coffee, black.

    Travis looks at Liz who is glancing her menu. He studies her.

    Liz grimaces and then smiles at something on the menu. Li feels some one staring at her. She

    raises her eyes slowly to find Travis staring at her. They stare at each other.

    Liz (V.O.)

    I’m not breaking the stare!

    The server brings the drinks. Travis sips his coffee.

    Liz smiles and notices he is not wearing a ring.

    TRAVIS

    Looks like everyone got hungry at the same time.

    LIZ

    I agree. I’m Sarah.

    TRAVIS

    I’m Travis.

    LIZ

    Do you travel by train often?

    TRAVIS

    My last train trip was five years ago.

    LIZ

    Everything on the menu is good but the spaghetti.

    TRAVIS

    What’s wrong with the spaghetti?

    LIZ

    They don’t have my recipe.

    TRAVIS

    Are you a chef?

    LIZ

    No.

    TRAVIS

    You don’t look Italian. Is it a family recipe?

    LIZ

    No

    The server returns to their table for their orders.

    LIZ
    I”ll have the chicken salad on chopped lettuce, tomato wedge on the side with iced tea.

    TRAVIS

    I’ll have the same but I would like crackers on the side, please.

    LIZ

    Good choice.

    TRAVIS

    Are we playing Twenty Questions or are you going to tell me about the spaghetti?

    LIZ

    I make a mean sauce. It’ good. One of the first times I rode the train, I ordered it for

    dinner. It tasted like it came out of a can. No seasonings. No flavor.

    TRAVIS

    Thanks for the warning. (Travis looks out the window, at the beautiful lights on display as the train went through a small town.) This is beautiful to see all the Christmas decorations and the lights.

    LIZ

    That is one of the benefits of riding the train at Christmas. (Liz checks her phone.) I don’t want to scare you but for the next sixty seconds it is going to be eerie.

    TRAVIS

    Why?

    The lights go out in the dining car. The lights flicker. Liz uses her cell phone to light up her face. Travis looks at her.

    LIZ

    (whispers) If there is a terrorist attack while we are in this tunnel, these are the people you will go to eternity with. (Liz looks at the people sitting quietly in the dining car.) Doesn’t that scare you?

    Travis sits back in his chair and looks around. He looks at the crazy lady sitting across from him. The lights in the car return.

    LIZ

    Good news. No terrorist attack tonight and you won’t die from the spaghetti either. (She winks

    at Travis)

    The server delivers their meals.

    LIZ

    Thank you.

    TRAVIS

    This looks good.

    Liz silently says grace. Travis waits for her.

    LIZ

    I choose the train as my mode of transportation because I have tremendous fear of flying, What’s yours?

    TRAVIS

    Same. I thought about joining the military after college, but there’s too much flying. I decided to

    form my tech company and live on a lake instead.

    LIZ

    Sounds like a peaceful work setting.

    TRAVIS

    It is . Every day at five o’clock, I take the party barge for a cruise around the lake. I play music that fits the season or day. Neighbors look me and wave. Sometimes I eat on the lake.

    LIZ

    So, you’re a daily ritual?

    TRAVIS

    Yes, Jake Jones and me.

    Travis noticed Liz’s face went from friendly to disgust.

    TRAVIS

    Not a Jake Jones fan I gather.

    LIZ

    I prefer rock n roll, myself.

    TRAVIS

    Never grew up, huh?

    LIZ

    Some might say that.

    TRAVIS

    Is this a business trip or are you headed home for the holidays?

    LIZ

    Both. I am in sales and I work with associations. How about you?

    TRAVIS

    My situation is crazy right now. Get this, my family always celebrates Christmas at the family home in Orlando. We gather for a week. It’s wonderful. This year my mother insisted we travel to

    Vermont and stay at the Bradford Inn, the same place where I got married five years ago. I need to mention my bride divorced me after one year because she hated the simple life.

    LIZ

    That’s crazy!

    TRAVIS

    Thank you, I totally agree. Why would I want to go back to that awful place?

    LIZ

    The good news is I am familiar with that inn and it is under new management. It

    has a five-star rating now. The town celebrates Christmas like no other.

    TRAVIS

    We got married two weeks before Christmas and was only there for one weekend. I don’t remember much about the town.

    LIZ

    You never remarried?

    TRAVIS

    No, she was beautiful but she lied to me about everything. I married my party barge instead.

    She doesn’t lie.

    Liz looked at her tea glass..

    LIZ (V.O.)

    Well, I just gave Travis a false name. He will think I am a liar.

    LIZ

    Have you asked your mother why the change in venue?

    TRAVIS

    Only about fifty times.

    LIZ

    What was her answer?

    TRAVIS

    She uses my father’s work as the reason. He needs a true vacation.

    LIZ

    That could be true. There’s something to do every night, but watching the

    snow fall is so relaxing.

    TRAVIS

    My mother and sister hate cold weather. They prefer ninety degrees.

    LIZ

    Either your mother knows nothing about Vermont in the wintertime, or she’s

    planning something special for you. (pauses) We have two things in common.

    TRAVIS

    What are they?

    LIZ

    Fear of flying and (pausing) meddling mothers who love us dearly.

    Travis laughs and Liz joins him.

    TRAVIS

    That thought deserves a toast. Let’s have a glass of wine. Server?

    Liz looks around and sees there is only one couple left in the dining car. The server

    takes the order. The other couple walks over.

    MAN

    Looks like we ‘re the young people on this trip? I’m Jerry and this is my wife, Joan.

    May we join you?

    TRAVIS

    Absolutely, we were just ordering a glass of wine. I’m Travis and this is Sarah.

    The server delivers two glasses of wine and goes back for more.

    LIZ (V.O.)

    Travis is a nice guy and I did the one think he hates, lied. I think I will be “shelter in place” for the Christmas holidays. I will tell him the truth tomorrow. At least he made me forget Jake Jones for a while.

    Lesson 11: Turning Points ACTS 1, 11, 111, IV

    What I learned from this assignment is am very confused about scenes. I understand what turning points are. I can’t fit them in my scenes because of the confusion of the meddling moms. I think I need to do the outline by character rather than acts. I’m struggling. I am beginning to doubt my script topic.

    Act I Turning Point

    Scene 1:Travis Going back to the place of bad memories, hates women who lie

    scene 1: Meddling Jill, setting up a surprise for Travis

    Liz: Jake Jones whom she has avoided for many years is back in her life.

    Meddling Annabelle: believes Jake and Liz belong together, provides the opportunity for Jake and Liz to re-connect

    Meddling Annabelle sees Liz’s smiling face and thinks Liz is falling for Jake

    Lesson 10: Inciting Incident

    What I learned about this assignment is the plan works but I am confused about the pages. Act I

    should be about 25 pages. I not near there. When I complete the rough draft, I may discover my concept is too simple. On paper, it looked complex.

    Scene 1. INT TRAVIS HARVELLE’S KITCHEN DAY

    Travis grabs three water bottles, a vegetable tray and a plastic container of prepared sandwiches from refrigerator and places them in a soft thermal cooler. He packs a bag of potato chips, napkins, paper plates in a plastic bag and walks out the back door to the dock where his party barge is waiting.

    As he gets on the boat, he looks and sees his friends coming around the house, down the hill to the lake.

    They wave and walk faster. Travis lays out the snacks and hands each a bottle of water.

    TRAVIS

    I’m glad you could make it today, JJ. I’m leaving for a Christmas holiday with the family tomorrow

    and I wanted to discuss the renovations with you before I left. I’m glad you agreed to do the work.

    SYDNEE

    When JJ said we were coming out to the lake for a ride, I was so happy. Thanks for the invitation

    and the sandwiches. Tell me, where are you going for the holidays?

    TRAVIS

    Mother arranged for us to celebrate Christmas in Vermont. It’s weird.

    The party barge leaves the dock.

    JJ

    What’s weird about that? Vermont is beautiful at Christmas. I’ve seen pictures.

    TRAVIS

    My family always celebrates Christmas for a week in Orlando. Neither my mom nor my sister,

    Marty, don’t like cold weather. Any temperature less than fifty-five degrees is freezing to them.

    JJ

    Do they know how cold it gets in Vermont at Christmas?

    TRAVIS

    I told them. There is another reason I don’t’ want to go. I was married there at the same hotel

    where we are staying, five years ago this Christmas. Becca divorced me a year later.

    Sydnee

    That’s a little crazy. If you change your mind about going, you can spend the holidays with us

    at Wildflowers B & B. We have enough room for you.

    TRAVIS

    Mom has called me every night this week to make sure I get on the train tomorrow. I don’t know

    what she has planned, but it better be something better than the last time I went there.

    JJ

    Well, if it gets too bad, spend the day outside or inside a ski resort. Your family won’t be there.

    They’ll be by the fire. Margo told me you take this boat ride every day at 5:00PM.

    TRAVIS

    Yeah. I ride and relax. Play Jake Jones music or special holiday music for the people who live on the lake. I think about all my family and friends who are driving home in Orlando traffic on I-4, bumper to bumper. It takes an hour to get home, with all the horns blowing and cars stopped for wrecks. Sometimes I pause on the lake and say thanks for living in Madison County.

    JJ

    This is a peaceful place. Look people are coming out of their homes and a waving at us.

    SYDNEE

    I feel like I am the Queen of England as I greet my minions. This is fun.

    (Sydnee starts waving like the Queen of England.)

    TRAVIS

    The family who lives in that big brick home on the ho;; had a wedding on the lawn. I drove around the lake that day and played the Love Boat theme. The bride and groom loved it.

    SYDNEE

    That sounds so sweet. So, you are a romantic at heart.

    TRAVIS

    Maybe. But definitely no romance with Becca.

    Scene 2 INT JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA DAY

    Liz Bradford is rushing to catch the train to Vermont. She is running late but comes to a halt when she hears Jake Jones singing a Christmas song over the loud speaker. A gentleman runs into her from the back. She drops all her packages, phone. He helps her retrieve her things and she rushes forward. She runs into a Christmas Elf when she shifts her packages, knocks the elf down. It is plastic. A housekeeper assists her in gathering her things and placing the Christmas Elf in an upright position.

    Phone rings.

    Split screen phone call

    LIZ

    Hello, Mom. I really don’t have time. I’m running late. I just arrived at the station and I’m trying to get on the train.

    ANNABELLE

    I was hoping you were already in your cabin, Dear.

    LIZ

    What is wrong? I can tell in your voice there’s a problem.

    ANNABELLE

    The entertainment duo for the lounge called. They cancelled.

    LIZ

    They can’t do that. They are under contract.

    ANNABELLE

    They are both homebound sick with the flu.

    LIZ

    (As she hands the conductor her ticket) Don’t worry. I will check my contact list and get somebody.

    Annabelle leans back in her chair, looks at the signed contract, thinks about the situation and smiles. She looks at the big picture of her deceased husband, Lawrence, on the office wall.

    ANNABELLE

    Lawrence? Sometimes love works in strange ways. I believe our daughter is about to be happy again.

    Scene 3. INT THE HALLWAY OF THE TRAIN DAY

    Liz is balancing her packages, her computer and phone as she meanders through the passengers, traveling to her cabin. When she gets to cabin 36, she hears a deep voice talking on the phone in the cabin next to hers. She pauses and takes her time getting the key in the door when “deep voice” says Bradford Inn. She walks in but leaves the door slightly ajar.

    TRAVIS (deep voice)

    Yes, I’m on the train, but tell me again why we are spending the Christmas holidays at Bradford

    Inn. You know how I feel about that place?

    JILL HARVELLE

    Your dad never gets to rest when we stay at home in Orlando. He needs to be away from that

    office. He is exhausted. We are familiar with the Bradford Inn and I feel it will be a good trip.

    TRAVIS

    You remember what happened there right before Christmas five years ago?

    JILL HARVELLE

    Don’t dwell on the past, Dear. You won’t believe this place. It’s fabulous! Marty and I

    walked every inch of the building today.

    TRAVIS

    How deep is the snow?

    JILL HARVELLE

    It is snowing, but I don’t know how deep it is. We are staying inside most of the time.

    Did you bring warm clothes? It’s a little chilly.

    TRAVIS

    The train is departing from the station. I will see you tomorrow.

    Travis realizes his door is open. He closes it with his foot.

    I want you and Marty to go outside and practice making snowballs. I want us to have

    a family snowball throwing contest while we stay at the lovely Bradford Inn.

    JILL HARVELLE

    Travis, you are teasing, right?

    TRAVIS

    See you tomorrow, Mom.

    Travis grabs a magazine he purchased at the depot and rests, looking out the window.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    I wish I knew what this trip is really about!

    Scene 4: INT Liz’s CABIN DAY

    Liz opens her computer and reviews her contracts, hits SEND to Annabelle. Then she checked her

    business notebook and looked for entertainment acts for the holidays. She writes down a few

    names and numbers. She calls Annabelle.

    Split phone call

    ANNABELLE

    Hello.

    LIZ

    Okay, I have three groups that might be available for the holidays. They are great family

    entertainers.

    ANNABELLE
    That’s okay. I’ve solve the problem. We’ll discuss when you arrive tomorrow afternoon.

    Enjoy your ride home. I’m busy in the restaurant.

    LIZ

    What is the name of the group?

    ANNABELLE

    Trust me. It’s going to be fabulous! Relax. I got is covered.

    LIZ

    Did you hire Jake Jones?

    ANNABELLE

    Now, Liz, he has changed. He was delightful in my office. He will be debuting five new

    songs on our stage. He will pack the lounge. He’s getting ready to record a new album.

    I think he is very successful. (She pauses.) I believe you might want to re-consider your

    situation with that man.

    LIZ

    I have re-considered it every Christmas for seven years. It’s not going to happen. Jake

    must work with either Sam or you. I am out of the picture on this one.

    ANNABELLE

    Is this going to be a problem for you?

    LIZ

    No, Jake Jones is your and Sam’s problem. I’m going to the dining car and eat. Hugs

    and kisses. See you tomorrow.

    ANNABELLE

    Hugs and kisses to you, Sweetheart. Love you.

    Liz checks the time. Usually, the dining car is full around this time. She combed her hair, grabbed

    her folder. She would complete the analysis of her contracts this trip after she ate. Jake Jones was not going to ruin her meal. She walks out the door and runs into a huge chest. She knows immediately, “deep voice” is standing in the hallway.

    LIZ

    I apologize. I travel this train all the time. I had something on my mind.

    TRAVIS

    Headed to the dining car?

    LIZ

    Yes.

    Travis points in the right direction. Liz turns around and moves toward the dining car. Liz

    greeted people she met.

    TRAVIS (V.O.)

    Miss Emerald Eyes speaks to every person she meets. She must be in sales. She’s caring a notebook. Workaholic. Can’t even eat without taking notes. Her auburn hair is beautiful and it bounces every time she takes a step.

    LIZ (V.O.)

    “Deep Voice” is very handsome. He has muscles. He’s probably a coach. He never speaks to people. He’s a snobbish coach. He reminds me of the picture Mom has of Rock Hudson. He walks a little too close to me, like he’s smelling my perfume or something. AT least I am not thinking about Jake Jones. Oh heck!

    When they arrive at the dining car, there is only one table left.

    LIZ

    (looking over her shoulder) Would you like to share a table?

    Travis grabs three water bottles, a vegetable tray and a plastic container of prepared sandwiches from refrigerator and places them in a soft thermal cooler. He packs a bag of potato chips in a plastic bag and walks out the back door to the dock where his party barge is waiting.

    Scene EXT. CHERRY LAKE – TRAVIS’ PARTY BARGE DAY

    Travis’ two guests come around the house and follow him to the barge. Travis lays out the snacks.

    TRAVIS

    I’m glad you could make it today, JJ. I’m leaving for a Christmas holiday with the family tomorrow and I wanted to discuss the renovations with you before I left.

    SYDNEE

    When JJ said we were coming out to the lake for a ride, I was so happy. Thanks for the invitation. Tell me, where are you going for the holidays?

    TRAVIS

    Have a snack, Guys. Mother arranged for us to celebrate Christmas in Vermont. It’s weird.

    The party barge leaves the dock.

    JJ

    What’s weird about that? Vermont is beautiful at Christmas. I’ve seen pictures.

    TRAVIS

    My family always celebrates Christmas for a week in Orlando. And my mom and sister, Marty, don’t like cold weather. Any temperature less than fifty-five degrees is freezing to them.

    JJ

    Do they know how cold it gets in Vermont at Christmas?

    TRAVIS

    I told them. There is another reason I don’t’ want to go. I was married there at the same hotel where we are staying, five years ago this Christmas. Becca divorced me a year later.

    Sydnee

    That’s a little crazy. If you change your mind about going, you can spend the holidays with us

    at Wildflowers B & B. We have enough room for you.

    TRAVIS

    Mom has called me every night this week to make sure I get on the train tomorrow. I don’t know what Mom has planned, but it better be something better than the last time I went there.

    JJ

    Well, if it gets too bad, sped the day outside. Your family won’t be here. They’ll be by the fire. Margo told me you take this boat ride every day at 5:00PM.

    TRAVIS

    Yeah. I ride and relax. Play Jake Jones music or special holiday music for the people who live on the lake. I think about all my family and friends who are driving home in Orlando traffic on I-4, bumper to bumper. It takes an hour to get home, with all the horns blowing and cars stopped for wrecks. Sometimes I pause on the lake and say thanks for living in Madison County.

    JJ

    This is a peaceful place. Look people are coming out of their homes and are waving at us.

    SYDNEE

    I feel like I am the Queen of England as I greet my minions. This is fun.

    TRAVIS

    The family who lives in that big brick home had a wedding on the lawn. I drove around the lake that day and played the Love Boat theme. The bride and groom loved it.

    SYDNEE

    That sounds so sweet. So you are a romantic at heart.

    TRAVIS

    Sure. Just not with Becca.

    Scene 2 INT JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA DAY

    Liz Bradford is rushing to catch the train to Vermont. She is running late but comes to a halt when she hears Jake Jones singing a Christmas song over the loud speaker. A gentleman runs into her. She drops all her packages, phone. He helps her retrieve her things and she rushes forward. She runs into a Christmas Elf when she shifts her packages, knocks the elf down. It is plastic. A housekeeper assists her in gathering her things and placing the Christmas Elf in an upright position.

    Phone rings.

    Split screen phone call

    LIZ

    Hello, Mother. I really don’t have time. I just arrived at the station and I’m trying to get on the train. Is there a problem?

    ANNABELLE

    I was hoping you were already in your cabin, Dear.

    LIZ

    Mother, what is wrong. I can tell in your voice.

    ANNABELLE

    The entertainment duo for the lounge called. They cancelled.

    LIZ

    They can’t do that. They are under contract.

    ANNABELLE

    They are both homebound sick with the flu.

    LIZ

    Don’t worry. I will check my contact list and get somebody.

    SCENE INT ANNABELLE’S OFFICE DAY

    Jake Jones walks into Annabelle’s office. The country music star is home for the holidays. Annabelle sees the solution to her problem.

    SPLIT SCREEN on phone

    ANNABELLE

    (waving Jake to enter her office) Sweetheart, don’t worry. I think I may have the answer to our problem.

    LIZ

    Mom, what are you thinking? Please wait until I get on the train. I can handle this.

    ANNABELLE

    Don’t miss the train. We will talk later. Bye, Love.

    LIZ

    Oh, no. What is she doing now, I wonder?

    Over the loud speaker: “ All Aboard”

    LIZ

    I can’t worry about it now.

    ANNABELLE

    Jake, have a seat. Welcome home to Wellington and the Bradford Inn.

    JAKE

    Hello, Ms. Annabelle, it’s good to be home. Is Lizzy around today?

    ANNABELLE

    She’s getting on the train to come home. Will arrive some time tomorrow.

    JAKE

    I want to see her. I made a mistake and I need to apologize to her. I tried to talk to her last Christmas, but I could never catch up with her.

    ANNABELLE

    I’m glad to hear that, Jake. I believe she will want to talk to you, too. Liz is VP of Marketing now. She is a key employee here. How is the music business? I hear you are making big bucks.

    JAKE

    Going great. I have five new songs ready to record in the new year. My agent thinks this may be my biggest album yet.

    ANNABELLE

    How would you like to debut those new songs on our stage? Our holiday performers are sick with the flu. I need an act for the lounge for four days.

    JAKE

    I will be happy to perform for you. Let’s sign the contracts and we’ll be set. I’ll pack that lounge

    every night. Tell Sam to order lots of tickets.

    Lesson 8: Theme and Antagonist’ Journey

    What I learned in this assignment is this step is difficult. Four people have transformational journeys. I have two heroes and two antagonists. I was often confused so I color coded the characters to help me. I struggle because I have too many scenes now. I learned not to quit, to keep going.

    Theme: Learning to love after betrayal

    ACT 1

    Scene: EXT CHERRY LAKE, FLORIDA DAY (Wednesday)

    On Cherry Lake in Madison County, Florida. Travis is preparing for his 5:00PM daily ride

    around the lake with JJ and Sydnee, new friends. He turns on the music to Jake Jones and is setting up the snack food and beverages. He looks and see JJ and Sydnee walking toward the dock. JJ and Sydnee learn Travis is not looking forward to his trip tomorrow to Vermont for the Christmas holidays. His meddling mom calls to make sure he is getting on the train. Travis

    tells JJ the plans for the renovation of the porch at Travis’ house.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD LOUNGE DAY

    Jake is setting up, practicing, getting ready for concert Friday night. Tries to connect with Sam, Liz’s business buddy and close friend.

    TE: Beginning: Tries to get Liz’ phone number, fakes sincerity. gets Sam’s number.

    Scene: INT TRAIN STATION JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA DAY (Thursday)

    Liz is rushing through the terminal to get to the train. Jake Jones’ Christmas song

    begins over the sound system. Liz crashes into Christmas Elf, drops all her packages, etc.

    Meddling Mom (Annabelle) calls Liz to discuss business and hints that there is a problem at the inn,

    tells Liz Jake is the new entertainment at Bradford Inn.

    TE: Liz remembers the rejection of Jake and confirms she will never trust a man again.

    ,Scene INT ON THE TRAIN, DAY

    Liz (rejected by Jake Jones) meets Travis (a long time Jake Jones fan and hates women who lie) Liz tells a lie about her name ( a safety habit she practices when she is traveling) and she discovers Travis is going to the Bradford Inn for a family Christmas vacation. He was married there five years ago. He doesn’t remember it fondly. She doesn’t tell him she is part-owner of the hotel because it does not occur to her. Travis gets call from meddling Mom during the meal.

    to make sure he is on the way and didn’t back out.

    TE: Liz does not tell her history with Jake Jones to Travis and she doesn’t tell Travis her real name

    when she has the opportunity. Travis remembers he can’t trust women.

    SCENE 4: INT LIZ’s CAR DAY (Friday)

    When they arrive in Vermont, Liz gives Travis a ride to the inn, mainly because she wants to see his reaction to the upgrades. Travis learns about the history of Wellington. He thinks Liz is on vacation, too.

    TE: Liz remembers the last time she was with Jake Jones. Travis, thinking she is a guest, asks if he can take Liz to lunch or something during the holidays. Liz says yes.

    Scene: phone call between Jake and Sam

    Jake is trying to connect with Liz, asks if she is on duty today. Sam has not seen her for several days because of business trip to Florida.

    Scene 4: INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY DAY

    Travis loves the inn. Forgets to get Liz’ last name and her phone number, He is looking for a woman named “Sarah”. Travis discovers the reason for the holiday trip to Vermont. Becca, his divorced wife, is in the lobby waiting to greet him. Mom and Marty are playing matchmaker. When Travis tells Becca to go home, he thinks about the emerald eyes he met on the train. Travis leaves a note for Sarah. He doesn’t know her last name. . Meddling Jill and Marty attempt to convince Travis to let Becca stay with him because the hotel has no rooms left. Travis does not fall for the trap.

    TE: (Beginning) Becca has tricked Marty and Jill into thinking Travis and Becca are getting back together.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN RESTAURANT DAY

    Annabelle meets with Liz, notices Liz is all smiles, misinterprets those smiles and thinks Liz has seen

    the marquee sign at the lounge announcing Jake Jones is the coming attraction for the holiday season.

    Liz gets upset with Annabelle for hiring Jake Jones, but does not confront her. Communicates about

    the new contracts.

    Scene: INT. BRD INN LOUNGE DAY

    Liz meets with Sam, her confident’ and arranges for tickets for Travis and family for tonight’s concert.

    They set up a plan to avoid Jake.

    Scene: BRD INN LOBBY DAY

    Liz leaves message about tickets for the Jake Jones concert tonight for Travis with a note signed

    “Sarah” for the bellhop to deliver. Bellhop gets the idea “Sarah” is staying without paying, begins his

    personal investigation. Bellhop delivers message to Travis. Jake passes through lobby on the way to

    lounge.

    Scene: BRD INN DAY

    split phone call: Jake calls Sam, looking for Liz. Sam tells Jake, Liz said to deal with her mother. She is not available.

    ACT 2

    Scene: INT LOBBY DAY

    Jill, Marty and Becca meet to strategize about next steps. Set up plan for tonight.

    TE: Becca listens and lets them run the meeting, thinking she can blame them if they fail.

    Scene: INT BRD INN RESTAURANT NIGHT

    Dinner in hotel, guests learn about the holiday scavenger hunt for $2500. Becca needs the money. Travis ‘s Dad and Marty’s husband have arrived. Becca doesn’t show up for dinner. After hearing the news about the money, she starts scouting the hotel for best hiding places.

    TE: Becca shows her true colors, only interested in money not Travis, but meddling mom does not it.

    Scene: INT. LOUNGE NIGHT

    Travis and family sit at center front for the concert. Liz is running late. When she arrives, she is walking toward Travis table, when Beautiful Becca enters in a flaming red dress. Since she wasn’t at dinner, Travis is in shock when Becca sits in the empty chair he thought would be for “Sarah”. Jake comes on stage and invites his Lizzy to the stage at the end of the concert to sing with him. Liz is forced to sing.

    Travis leaves the room as soon as the concert is over. Jakes attempts to woo Liz doesn’t work. She whispers in his ear, she will not be present for any more of his concerts. As she is leaving the stage, she remembers Jake called her Lizzy. Liz can’t find Travis in the lounge to explain. Becca approaches Jake after the concert, invites him for a drink, thinking Travis is mad at her for not leaving.

    TE: Liz’ lie is exposed and Travis gives up.

    TE: Jake meets Becca and gives her attention as a back up plan in case he doesn’t win over Liz this

    week.

    TR: Jake takes control and forces Liz to sing with him. Thinks he has won.

    TR: Becca makes a play for Jake Jones as a back-up plan

    TE: Travis falters in his attempt to begin a relationship

    Scene: INT BRD INN LOUNGE NIGHT

    Sam and Liz talk. Sam does not know about Travis/Liz story. She is disgusted, leaves to go to her apartment which is on the grounds. Travis returns to try to get a room where he can stay to get away from his ex. Sam calls Annabelle and gets permission for Travis to stay in Liz’ brother’s apartment. The brother is on sabbatical in France. He is the chef for the hotel. Travis walks to Becca who is entertaining Jake and tells her she can stay in his room for the holidays. He gives her a set of keys.

    Scene: INT TRAVIS’ OLD HOTEL ROOM. NIGHT

    Becca enters quietly thinking Travis is asleep. She takes a bath and climbs in bed and realizes Travis is

    not in the room. She wonders where he is. She decides to wait up for him and stays awake most of the

    night.

    TE: Becca. This is a set back. She thought she won Travis back. She thinks about getting closer to Jake as a backup in case Travis doesn’t change his mind.

    Act 3

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN CAFÉ DAY (Saturday)

    Travis goes to breakfast runs into Liz. Liz confesses about her name. Travis understands and forgives. Liz spends the day shopping. Bellhop continues the search for “Sarah”. Jill and Mary come down for continental breakfast and see Becca. Jill and ask here where she spent the night. She says in Travis’ room. Jill and Marty go wedding shopping but say if their plan does not work, Dad may kill somebody and the bellhop overhears the comment.

    Scene: INT BRD INN OFFICE DAY

    Split phone call: Jake and Annabelle, trying to reach Liz.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY

    The scavenger hunt begins. Becca participates, does not win the first ornament. shows poor sportsmanship. Participates in second try. Does not win. The last phase begins.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN CAFÉ DAY

    Travis ‘s Dad and Brother-in-law meet Travis in the café for lunch. Travis remembers the hayride, tries to call Liz to invite her. She left her phone in her apartment. When she finally answers, he acts like a schoolboy. Invites her to the hayride. Dad and Brother-in-law see a change in Travis. Travis decides to buy a gift and leaves running into his mom and sister at the door. Dad tells Jill the difference in Travis which further confirms their plan is working. The scavenger hunt ends and Becca passes by looking like a wreck. Dad says love is blind. Jake calls Becca and invites her to the hayride.

    Scene. INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY

    Jill and Marty re-consider but misinterpret the truth based upon what Travis and Jake are doing. Travis announces he is making a big decision and goes to purchase a present. Parents think he is asking Becca to marry him again, but he plans to ask Liz to date him. Becca goes to the spa without her phone. Jake calls Becca when she returns to her room and invites himself for lunch.

    Scene: INT. SEURITY OFFICE IN HOTEL DAY

    House security begins the search for the missing Sarah who is staying at the inn without paying. Bellhop

    tells about pending murder. Becca goes on a date with Jake in the horse and buggy. Travis goes with Liz

    to greet Santa and have their picture taken

    Scene: INT. HOTEL LOBBY DAY (Monday)

    Travis and Liz meet for breakfast in the restaurant. Travis meets with Liz and confesses he wants to start a relationship with her. He will travel with her if she wants. Warns her about her meddling mother. Gives her a locket.

    TE: Both Liz and Travis are beginning to trust.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY DAY

    Travis runs into Jill and Marty and says he popped the question and she accepted. Jill and Marty go to Annabelle and arrange for the wedding tomorrow. Liz is working with a Christmas activity in the restaurant all morning.

    Scene: INT. HOTEL ADMINISTRATION MEETING. DAY

    Annabelle informs the leadership team the police set up plan to catch a killer and “Sarah”. She tells them about the recently reserved small wedding planned for the chapel. Jill sets up the family for the wedding saying they are gathering for a family portrait in the chapel.

    Scene: INT THE WEDDING CHAPEL DAY (Tuesday)

    Becca gets a massage and Jill can’t find her to tell her Travis and she are getting married. Becca returns and puts on tacky dress. Can’t believe Travis has fallen for her. Jill has selected a tacky dress with flowers for her wedding. Becca doesn’t understand but believes it. Travis calls Liz and invites her to family lunch at 11:45, plans to introduce her

    Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift Travis and family enter the chapel. Everyone is there but Liz. Jake is singing. Jake hits Travis and knocks him down. Mom of Travis faints, police rush in with guns drawn causing a major disruption. Becca screams when she sees the gun. The preacher tries to leave. Annabelle takes a candelabra and heads toward Travis. Police yells for commotion to cease and ask “Which one of you is Sarah? We stopped a murder here today!” Investigation solves everything. Annabelle and Jill and Marty leave the chapel in shock. Annabelle tells Travis Liz is her daughter. Jake kisses Liz so that Travis can witness it.

    TE: Jake believes Travis is two-timing Liz, but can’t get her phone number to tell her. Then, he kisses Liz in front of Travis, trying to trick Travis.

    TE: Liz and Travis must move on without each other. Can’t trust.

    Scene: INT OUTSIDE OF WEDDING CHAPEL DAY

    Climax

    Liz tells Jake Jones it is over and goes to find Travis. Travis packs and calls train station for a

    ticket. Becca calls her mother for money to buy a plane ticket home. Annabelle goes to bed with

    major headache. Jill and Marty go to the bar for a cocktail.

    TE: Liz takes stand against Jake. Jake loses finally. Travis says never again.

    Annabelle calls Liz and invites her to breakfast. Jill, Marty and husbands, are gathered. They tell

    the truth about their meddling. Liz calls airlines and buys a plane ticket to Jacksonville

    TE Resolution Liz flies (fear of flying but she goes the quickest way to Travis) to Jacksonville Fl

    Scene: EXT TRAVIS’ HOME ON CHERRY LAKE

    Liz pulls up to Travis cabin, finds Travis near the boat and introduces herself, leaving out nothing. They get on the boat at 5:00 PM as Travis and Liz drive around the lake. While on the barge, Annaelle calls Liz and Jill calls Travis. They start their meddling to help them plan the wedding. The mothers are still talking as Travis and Liz lay their phones down. Travis kisses Liz.

    TE: Liz and Travis will work toward a winning relationship, forgetting Becca and Jake forever.

    TE: Jake and Becca learned nothing and continue to lose

    Scene: EXT CHERRY LAKE, FLORIDA DAY (Wednesday)

    On Cherry Lake in Madison County, Florida. Travis is preparing for his 5:00PM daily ride

    around the lake with JJ and Sydnee, new friends. He turns on the music to Jake Jones and is setting up the snack food and beverages. He looks and see JJ and Sydnee walking toward the dock. JJ and Sydnee learn Travis is not looking forward to his trip tomorrow to Vermont for the Christmas holidays. His meddling mom calls to make sure he is getting on the train. Travis

    tells JJ the plans for the renovation of the porch at Travis’ house.

    Scene: INT TRAIN STATION JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA DAY (Thursday)

    Liz is rushing through the terminal to get to the train. Jake Jones’ Christmas song

    begins over the sound system. Liz crashes into Christmas Elf, drops all her packages, etc.

    Meddling Mom (Annabelle) calls Liz to discuss business and hints that there is a problem at the inn,

    tells Liz Jake is the new entertainment at Bradford Inn.

    TE: Liz remembers the rejection of Jake and confirms she will never trust a man again.

    ,Scene INT ON THE TRAIN, DAY

    Liz (rejected by Jake Jones) meets Travis (a long time Jake Jones fan and hates women who lie) Liz tells a lie about her name ( a safety habit she practices when she is traveling) and she discovers Travis is going to the Bradford Inn for a family Christmas vacation. He was married there five years ago. He doesn’t remember it fondly. She doesn’t tell him she is part-owner of the hotel because it does not occur to her. Travis gets call from meddling Mom during the meal.

    TE: Liz remembers the last time she was with Jake Jones. Travis, thinking she is a guest, asks if he can take Liz to lunch or something during the holidays. Liz says yes.

    Scene 4: INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY DAY

    Travis loves the inn. Forgets to get Liz’ last name and her phone number, He is looking for a woman named “Sarah”. Travis discovers the reason for the holiday trip to Vermont. Becca, his divorced wife, is in the lobby waiting to greet him. Mom and Marty are playing matchmaker. When Travis tells Becca to go home, he thinks about the emerald eyes he met on the train. Travis leaves a note for Sarah. He doesn’t know her last name. . Meddling Jill and Marty attempt to convince Travis to let Becca stay with him because the hotel has no rooms left. Travis does not fall for the trap.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN RESTAURANT DAY

    Annabelle meets with Liz, notices Liz is all smiles, misinterprets those smiles and thinks Liz has seen

    the marquee sign at the lounge announcing Jake Jones is the coming attraction for the holiday season.

    Liz gets upset with Annabelle for hiring Jake Jones, but does not confront her. Communicates about

    the new contracts.

    Scene: INT. BRD INN LOUNGE DAY

    Liz meets with Sam, her confident’ and arranges for tickets for Travis and family for tonight’s concert.

    They set up a plan to avoid Jake.

    Scene: BRD INN LOBBY DAY

    Liz leaves message about tickets for the Jake Jones concert tonight for Travis with a note signed

    “Sarah” for the bellhop to deliver. Bellhop gets the idea “Sarah” is staying without paying, begins his

    personal investigation. Bellhop delivers message to Travis

    Jill, Marty and Becca meet to strategize about next steps. Set up plan for tonight.

    Scene: INT BRD INN RESTAURANT NIGHT

    Dinner in hotel, guests learn about the holiday scavenger hunt for $2500. Becca needs the money. Travis ‘s Dad and Marty’s husband have arrived. Becca doesn’t show up for dinner. After hearing the news about the money, she starts scouting the hotel for best hiding places.

    Scene: INT. LOUNGE NIGHT

    Travis and family sit at center front for the concert. Liz is running late. When she arrives, she is walking toward Travis table, when Beautiful Becca enters in a flaming red dress. Since she wasn’t at dinner, Travis is in shock when Becca sits in the empty chair he thought would be for “Sarah”. Jake comes on stage and invites his Lizzy to the stage at the end of the concert to sing with him. Liz is forced to sing.

    Travis leaves the room as soon as the concert is over. Jakes attempts to woo Liz doesn’t work. She whispers in his ear, she will not be present for any more of his concerts. As she is leaving the stage, she remembers Jake called her Lizzy. Liz can’t find Travis in the lounge. Becca approaches Jake after the concert, invites him for a drink, thinking Travis is mad at her for not leaving.

    TE: Liz’ lie is exposed and Travis gives up. Becca makes a play for Jake Jones as a back-up plan

    Scene: INT BRD INN LOUNGE NIGHT

    Sam and Liz talk. She is disgusted, leaves to go to her apartment which is on the grounds. Travis returns to try to get a room where he can stay to get away from his ex. Sam calls Annabelle and gets permission for Travis to stay in Liz’ brother’s apartment. The brother is on sabbatical in France. He is the chef for the hotel. Travis walks to Becca who is entertaining Jake and tells her she can stay in his room for the holidays. He gives her a set of keys.

    Scene: INT TRAVIS’ OLD HOTEL ROOM. NIGHT

    Becca enters quietly thinking Travis is asleep. She takes a bath and climbs in bed and realizes Travis is

    not in the room. She wonders where he is. She decides to wait up for him and stays awake most of the

    night.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN CAFÉ DAY (Saturday)

    Travis goes to breakfast runs into Liz. Liz confesses about her name. Travis understands and forgives. Liz spends the day shopping. Bellhop continues the search for “Sarah”. Jill and Mary come down for continental breakfast and see Becca. Jill and ask here where she spent the night. She says in Travis’ room. Jill and Marty go wedding shopping but say if their plan does not work, Dad may kill somebody and the bellhop over hears the comment.

    Scene INT BRADFORD INN LOBBY

    The scavenger hunt begins. Becca participates, does not win the first ornament. shows poor sportsmanship. Participates in second try. Does not win. The last phase begins.

    Scene: INT BRADFORD INN CAFÉ DAY

    Travis ‘s Dad and Brother-in-law meet Travis in the café for lunch. Travis remembers the hayride, tries to call Liz to invite her. She left her phone in her apartment. When she finally answers, he acts like a schoolboy. Invites her to the hayride. Dad and Brother-in-law see a change in Travis. Travis decides to buy a gift and leaves running into his mom and sister at the door. Dad tells Jill the difference in Travis which further confirms their plan is working. The scavenger hunt ends and Becca passes by looking like a wreck. Dad says love is blind. Jake calls Becca and invites her to the hayride.

    What I learned doing this assignment – I see many mistakes in my writing due to these exercises. My characters are one surface people, no depth.

    Liz

    Role in story: HERO 1

    Age: 25 – 30

    Physical traits: 5 ft, 6 in

    auburn hair, below shoulder, straight,

    emerald, green eyes

    dresses professionally

    walks fast all the time, in a rush but arrives on time always

    organizes time by thirty-minute segments to accomplish daily goals

    deadlines are important

    part of a close-knit family

    Motivation:

    increase sales (She is VP because she is family member. She wants to earn that title.)

    works beyond required time to avoid relationships with males

    to get over rejection of high school sweetheart

    one day find someone like her father (deceased) to love

    Wound: planned to make a career in music as a duo with high school sweetheart. He dumped her for a solo career after high school graduation. He became a huge success.

    Secret: Because she frequently travels, she has a practice she follows when she meets strangers on the train. She gives the false name of “Sarah”. Everyone is looking for “Sarah” and that person doesn’t exist. She also doesn’t say she is the daughter of the owner of the company. She wants to be perceived as the best applicant for the job not she got the job because she is a relative.

    Mission – (Liz meets a divorced stranger on the train who doesn’t trust women and he loves Liz’s ex sweetheart’s country music. The stranger was married five years ago at the Bradford Inn and he’s forced to return there for Christmas.)

    Liz hopes to convince him the Bradford Inn which is under new management is a great place to visit, to persuade him to listen to other types of music and she takes the chance to get involved with the handsome stranger.

    What makes her special? On the outside she is cute, energetic, and a go-getter. On the inside she is vulnerable. She does not reveal the truth about her name and family connection. This one habit of a simple lie provides the humor and opportunities for misinterpretations that guide the story. It’s a comedy of errors. She and the stranger have the same fear – fear of flying. He owns his own company. She and the stranger fit.

    Character flaw: She is not assertive when addressing ex-sweetheart. She avoids conflict. She claims she has dealt with the anger, but she hasn’t. It takes too much energy. She chooses to ignore. She has a simple lie but it causes tremendous problems.

    What I learned from this assignment? I am visualizing the characters more, but I am creating more drama (conflict) in my head. I always map my characters, but this is greater detail and I know them better.

    Role: Antagonist: He talked Liz into going to college in music, uses her all through high school to win competitions and make side money, dumps her and goes out on his own career

    and makes it for a while. Now the money is slowing down. He comes home every year for Christmas and tries to connect with Liz. Sam has protected her. This year Jake goes through Annabelle and gets a gig at the night club because the other singers canceled.

    Age: 25 – 30 same as Liz

    He is good looking, dark hair, wears it should length, wear a Cowboy hat, always performing,

    knows he is important, is determined to get Liz back this year. He pushes Travis away through a sneaking maneuver. Thanks Becca has money, goes after her. He needs the money. It doesn’t matter who is his next victim.

    Mission – to get money to continue singing, needs financial support until he makes it again.

    What I learned doing this assignment: I believe this process will save me time in writing because I am doing all the thinking about characters before the writing.

    2. Old Ways: avoid conflicts, always “on the job”, no dating, lives in the frustrated past, angry over rejection in high school relationship, business success if ok, but needs to work on sales skills, especially family relationships of clients, manipulated by old boyfriend

    New Ways: Takes time for fun, develops stronger interpersonal skills, overcomes fear of flying, seeks new relationships, better attitude in sales because she is happier in new relationship, stands up to old boyfriend.

    I love the storyline and your explanation of what you learned. Something for you to think about: Bonne, Blake, Bigger Burger – all begin with the letter B. My first screenplay had most of the characters begin with the same letter or letter sound. It was the first comment in my judge evaluation. I tend to select my characters the same way. I now have an alphabet chart, and I write my character names using the letters of the alphabet. I spend a day working on the character names—something for you to ponder.
    Hal discussed the same concept in one of his weekly classes.
