Michael Kemp Story Producer Insights – Alternate-TV – Lesson 9

What I Learned Doing This Assignment is the planning and scripting it will take to do a show, including outlining, preparation, and cast relationships, what notes can mean, and six acts to a show. 

How to make the show work dramatically.

The editing, review and add to if necessary, looking for the small things, analyzing the content, overseeing the narrative. Raw footage. What do the characters want to say? 

How much preplanning goes into a show?

Depends. Organizing thoughts each day. Observing. Having staff track the cast members and their topics 

Developing Story hooks on the fly.

Be tolerant, consider reshoots of topics that just occurred. 

What makes the “talent” amazing versus average.

Interview questions. Quirky talent that’s compelling and grabbing. Some being great storytellers that can carry the show for hours and hours if allowed. 

The predetermined beats of a show that will create drama.

Discussed in meetings. Decisions rendered. Conflict? Is it there or not? Location? Kitchen or front porch? Linking the scenes together from Act 1 through Act 6. Overview of it all. 

How Toni responds to “notes” from the producer and network.

Reviews Director notes, consider the best guess how to proceed. Let the story department make the outline. Generate a rough cut to a fine cut to a locked cut. Embrace it. Interviews and cuts may be additional. 

What happens when the “reality” is not good enough?

Pay attention, don’t let lack of attention miss important issues and emotional responses. To make it work better, consider editing perceptions. 

How to maintain a relationship with the cast members even when you make them look bad.

Temperament. Push a lunch together, convince the cast members that they will be redeemed later through promises. Review internal cuts. 

Shooting “pickups” and OTF’s (on-the-fly interviews) to elevate moments.

Fatten, not thin in substance, relationship health. Don’t burn bridges. Cold pickups of any scene. What happened at a party? Add extra on a scene. Searching for that emotional or exciting scene for a reaction from one or all involved. 

How you choose cast members that can sell your show.

Use authentic people. Extreme personalities that can self-generate and be unfiltered; jobs, families, lifestyles. Fantastic talent that leaps through the screen. Be someone the public can admire and would want to have lunch or dinner with them.

ASSIGNMENT 1. Watch the interview and take notes. 2. Tell us at least three insights you had that will make you a stronger ATV creator.

Assembly of a show, the storytelling, the guts of the machine you’re selling, the value of the editing room, and being tolerant of whomever you’re working for or with, including the network, streamer, or cable personnel.

Michael Kemp Alternate-TV Talent Lesson 8 What I Learned Doing This Assignment is the analysis of five categories to evaluate the possibilities of success and reaching a conclusion to compare to other shows.

ASSIGNMENT 1 For the assignment, an easy one: you’re going to be a 1-person focus group by evaluating the talent in these reality shows in terms of DIVERSITY, TECHNICAL ABILITY, WATCHABILITY, RELATABILITY, and LIKEABILITY by scoring them on a scale of 1 to 5 — 5 being “the most relatable;” “the most watchable;” etc. For this assignment, we’ll look at 3 characters (talent) in 3 different shows.

    1. MARIE KONDO in “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” (Netflix) You can watch several trailers here: https://www.netflix.com/title/80209379

Michael Kemp Alternate-TV Show Budget Considerations. Lesson 7 What I learned doing this assignment is all the budgetary requirements needed to produce a show and their usefulness.

ASSIGNMENT #1 For this assignment, using the production elements listed below, take a stab at determining the decisions or considerations that contribute to one or more of these reality shows.

HIGH-COST REALITY SHOW “The Pack” (Amazon Prime) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bTBu0i1HVk Budget: $4 million / episode List of considerations affecting budget are: All, but catering, except maybe for dogs. Add casting. IMBD lists 21 producers, 4 editors, 12 teams of dogs and their human counterparts, from Amazon Studios for broadcast on USA Network. Travel.

MEDIUM-COST REALITY SHOW “Haute Dog (HBO Max) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zbS0RnH0M8 Budget: $400K / episode List of consideration affecting budget are: Dog Grooming Competition. 13 producers, music (Top-40), unknown talent, all others apply inclosing travel.

LOW-COST REALITY SHOW “House Hunters” (HGTV) https://www.hgtv.com/shows/house-hunters/house-hunters-opposites-attract-videos Budget: $175K / episode List of considerations affecting budget are: Traditional vs. Modern. Narration added, no visible catering, all others apply, inclosing travel.

ASSIGNMENT #2 Let’s look at your show idea. As you do, don’t get stuck in thinking you must have the

perfect answer. This is just an opportunity for you to go through the thinking process. With your own show idea, guess how it might work for each of these budget considerations. Just give us a one-word to one sentence answer for each.

    · Different scenario’s each episode. As we have seen in tragic incidents both at home or abroad, anyone can contribute to safeguarding the nation from harm if you know what to do and how to do it.

    · Each community contributes to the safeguarding goal by individually preparing for the risks that are most relevant and urgent for them; hurricanes in the east, earthquakes in the west, tornadoes in the mid-west, flooding in the south, blizzards in the north.

    · Individually by empowering the audience with knowledge and demonstrations in times of disaster by the main celebrity, host Randolph Mantooth.

    7. In conclusion, why now and what’s it called?

    · The series is named, “ERT-The National Championships” involving sixteen teams from around the country in four categories of four teams each; East, Central, South, and West competing against one another in six skill competitions until the only team remains to be declared “National Champion.”

    · Natural hazards, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, winter storms and flooding present a significant and varied risk across the country.

    · Climate change has the potential to cause the consequences of weather-related hazards to become more severe including rising sea levels, increasingly powerful storms and heavier downpours are already contributing to an increased risk of flooding, wildfires are becoming more frequent, and severe in some areas of the country.

Michael Kemp Plans a Great Pitch Deck Alternate-TV Lesson 5.

What I Learned about this assignment is the ability to copy and paste internet items onto a PowerPoint presentation (which I apparently cannot present here other than this outline.)

ERT-The National Championships (Title of series)

    America’s Greatest Resource

    • Hosted by Randolph Mantooth, (celebrity host)

    • Leeza Gibbons, and Heidi Collins (celebrity hostesses)

    America’s Greatest Resource (logline)

In a world where disasters strike, ordinary people volunteer and invoke the seven skills necessary to save lives, property, and the environment, while the clock is ticking, by training to reach their goal, challenging their goal, and achieving their goal through Team competition; for everyone has a family, and every family has a story.

    Introduction of the Series Content

Designed as a one-hour reality television series in quality, digital HD appealing to all major demographic factors, “ERT – The National Championship” presents a unique focus into an innovative, competitive-variety-educational concept that introduces the average television viewer to the extraordinary lives of certified, accomplished Community Emergency Response Team Members (CERT), and lesson tips to keep the public safe before, during, and after a disaster. It will spotlight and highlight the competing team’s unique abilities and activities throughout the various stages of their training to their entry into the ultimate competition of ERT-The National Championships. (Copyright, BICEPP, and Michael A. Kemp, all rights reserved 2009. )

In a speech from Jackson Square in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, President George W. Bush highlighted emergency planning as a “national security priority.”

CERT became a national program in 1993. There are now CERT programs in all 50 states, including many tribal nations and U.S. territories. Each is unique to its community and all are essential to building a Culture of Preparedness in the United States. There are over 2,700 local CERT programs nationwide and more than 600,000 people have trained since CERT became a national program.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Invitational gets its roots from the annual Emergency Response Team (ERT) Challenge that was held bi-annually by the Business & Industry Council for Emergency Planning and Preparedness (BICEPP http://www.bicepp.org).

Assignment #1 Subject: Michael Kemp Connects to Viewers! 576 words. Have discovered converting to pdf instead of Word copy and paste, which did not work.

“What I learned doing this assignment is determining what the viewer is looking for in a specific program and how that ‘want’ is expressed for my own show.

Using the points of access listed above (and below), make a list of the most prominent points of access you observe. No need to make a long list, but write down at least 2 compelling, prominent access points that help to answer — what hooks the viewer?

 Emotional Connection: Unexpected events, demolition, family relationship

     Characters: Husband/Wife, co-designers, business partners

 Expertise: Construction, renovation, working harder not smarter

 Settings: New again renovated homes

     Humor: Texas camaraderie humor

What makes this show’s points of access so wildly distinctive and different from shows whose formats are virtually identical?

Old to new, cooperation, less tension, compatibility with clients, respect, decency, being appreciative

    Assignment #2

Considering your own project, overlay the points of access we discussed on your idea to determine how you’re affecting the viewer on a psychological level.

    1. Answer these questions about how your show will connect with viewers.

 A. What is the emotional connection to the show?

The expressiveness of strategies to enact.

Responsive to team and victim needs.

Some Team Members may appear distant.

    Independence in thought and procedures.

    High-strung individual reactions.

Self-Awareness at all times for safety and security.

Submissive to determine the ranking of Team Members.

    Absorbed by victim(s) responses.

Appeasing to get along in team and victim relationships.

 B. How are the characters relatable or non-relatable?

    If Relatable: If Non-Relatable:

    Narcissistic Flippant

    Impulsive Compromising

    Energetic Needy and Naive

    Rule-Bound Argumentive

    Feeling superior Resentful

    Collaboration Insecure

    Arrogant Unselfish

    Risk-taking Noble

    Ill-humored Humble, yet stubborn

    Dominate Pessimistic

    Moody

    Feeling loss become agitated

 C. Is there expert advice or skill depicted that is compelling to watch or learn?

Lesson Tips by established experts for home and away from topics.

Seven skills; cribbing, fire suppression, triage, medical treatment, search and rescue, command and control, Moulage makeup of victim injuries.

 D. Is there an authentic setting that is uniquely compelling?

Los Angeles County Fire Department Del Valle Regional Training Center, Castaic, CA

On-Site props, hazardous spill recovery site, industrial accident site, collapsed buildings site, underground tunnels, rail cars, city buses, and oil refinery structure all suitable for competition purposes.

 E. Do the situations portrayed in your show idea lend themselves to comedy or drama? Are they fun or funny to watch?

Drama. More meaningful than comedic. First responders are defined as those who in the early stages of an incident are responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, and the environment. Not to criticize or relate ill-humor in times of crisis.

    2. How do those answers help define your show and how might it connect with the audience?

Grants access to a largely unexplored world.

Expertise in mental slides of past contingencies, sensemaking protocols. If a fire develops, determine the type (Chemical, Wood, or

Wildfire) and apply the appropriate solution.

People are wired differently physically and psychologically: Some people with certain chemical makeup’s and psychological profiles react efficiently and effectively under extreme stress, while others cannot optimally function in such an environment.

Chaos is a normal, natural part of the event. How effectively can he/she understand what is happening in that chaos and determine a course of action that is the correct one in preserving lives while the clock is ticking for survival.

    A. A one or two-sentence explanation of the show.

Responding quickly to save lives, protect property and the environment, and meet basic human needs in an aftermath of an incident or natural disaster.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Invitational gets its roots from the annual Emergency Response Team (ERT) Challenge that was held bi-annually by the Business & Industry Council for Emergency Planning and Preparedness (BICEPP).

    4. Inclusion of ‘Rex’ the homeland security/FEMA live-action mountain lion ‘Ready Kits Mascot’ who has the head of a feline and the body of a weightlifter dressed in full costume to point, display, and showcase — all in pantomime — in order to assist our Main Host in communication with our television audience, especially the children.

    5. Our Main Host may refer to Rex’s family of wife ‘Purrcilla’ and his daughter ‘Rory’ on the importance and need for certain preparedness items pertaining to families

    D. The situation these characters find themselves in.

    1. Each team will be in a fish-out-of-water scenario since contestants are not full-time first responders, if private, but are mostly utilized and called into action only in times of disaster.

    2. Seven skills to be performed by each team in simulated environments of disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods, tropical storms, train derailments, MTA Bus accidents, all created by Hollywood special effects experts and others to ensure reality, including professional Moulage makeup for victim authenticity.

    3. Conducting search and rescue operations to locate and rescue persons in distress from start to finish, inside and outside of selected buildings, subways, train depots, movie theatres, locations; i.e. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles County Fire Training Facility, and wherever the public congregates, to include establishing the condemnation of unsafe structures.

    4. Tension, sacrifice, good fair play, stress, comfortability on camera will all play key roles.

    5. A race against the clock urgency will award points in selected categories with a live audience and three celebrity hosts familiar with disaster drills and training.

    6. A pressure-cooker atmosphere for contestants will exist where the fast-action-paced drama will unfold as it occurs and the individual contestants of each team’s true characterizations will rise to the surface.

    7. Ensuring a safe environment throughout timely communications.

    8. Designated and/or qualifying teams must plan to work together to survive into the next round of competition while creating a heightened reality.

    E. The setting.

    1. Various locales and cities for the two teams taking part. Will involve travel and showcasing of those cities selected with on-screen welcomes by the Mayor and Governor of each state, all encouraging Americans to volunteer to improve and safeguard the nation by agreeing to join CERT in their individual communities and learn the skills presented and practice the safe lesson tips in each segment.

    2. Short lesson tips with demonstrations by the Main Host using appropriate props and set dressing to explain each lesson:

    <br clear=”all”>

    · House bolting to foundations.

    · Strapping propane tanks and correct storage.

    · Checklist for your home essentials to prepare to shelter-in-place at home and at work. Raising utilities above level of flood risk.

    · Securing furniture survival checklist for your car and the essentials.

    · Making out-of-state family connections for communications.

    · Area Code and cellular telephone discussions and why they may not work.

    <br clear=”all”>

    F. And the viewer experience:

    1. Interviews and insights with secondary hosts looking into the competitors’ full-time occupations and private lives.

    2. Focusing on the individual contenders, so the audience will care about what happens to them before, during, and after the competition that our editors can tap out of sequence from a pool of digitized footage to tell their human stories, which will provide exposure to a broad range of human experiences not available in other programming.

    3. Witnessing honor guards from the Boy Scouts of America, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, Campfire Girls, YMVA, Rotary Clubs, ROTC, etc with each ceremony will include a TBA local high school band and drill team playing the National Anthem with a regular performance later in the program for the live audience.

    4. The possibility exists of expanding the competitive team base to allow many more team cities to take part and to start a new, innovative concept for television — by simultaneously creating two additional hosting teams in:

    · The Spanish language

    · ASL (American Sign Language) with full sound so each segment may be enjoyed equally by hearing audiences as well to the 26-to-36 million who are deaf or hearing impaired, just in the United States alone.

    · Each structured script will follow the same formula pattern, except that all achievements will happen simultaneously with all three hosting teams in action and edited later for distribution to all three major demographic markets: English, Spanish, and ASL, and all with no form of captioning for having three marketing versions of the same episode throughout the series.

    · VTR quick lesson tips will be updated and vary on different topics during each future segment(s) and subject to prior review and approval for broadcast using as many of the sponsored items as necessary on camera.

    3. Tell us how you envision it being a SERIES that can run for one or more seasons.

    A. Different people, different cities, different relationships, timely stories, and topics.

    B. Availability of educational lessons being updated before each segment with varying topics and instructional skills that anyone can perform.

    C. An audience of at a minimum of 3,300 CERT teams across the United States, if not competing personally, cheering on their favorite cities to win. Other countries also tuning in.

My name is Michael Kemp, I’ve worked in the motion picture and television industry for over 38-years as a medical supervisor for various studios and locations including Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Warner Hollywood Studios before retiring. I once wrote a spec “Adam-12” TV episode at age 17 and it brought about a meeting with Stephen J. Cannell when he was story editor of the series. More on that later if you wish, including later having Jack Webb himself as one of my mentors.

While at Warner Hollywood I continued writing spec scripts for “Love Boat,” “Matt Houston” and “Quantum Leap.” None of which panned out as an assignment.

Before retirement and studio employment, I was a private emergency ambulance driver/attendant contracted to the City of Burbank where I ran over 5,200 9-1-1 calls from 1973 to 1976, a period I call before paramedics, which enabled me to qualify for the studio jobs. Finally, gaining PHTLS certification through Daniel Freeman Paramedic School Hospital in Inglewood, California as a Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support EMT.

After that, I was President of the Business & Industry Council of Emergency Planning and Preparedness (www.bicepp.org) based in Los Angeles where we coordinated with the city and private industry to plan and prepare for any form of disaster, including scheduling competition between various factors, city and private companies (More below).

After retirement, I’ve devoted full-time to writing, having written several motion pictures, “Lotso”, about a lost, $1 billion, winning lottery ticket in a package of shipped breakfast cereal.

“Barbary Raid: The True 1803 Story of the frigate USS Philadelphia, a miniseries for television Part I: Capture, imprisonment, and destruction,” based on all six volumes of the Naval Documents Related to the United States Wars with the Barbary Powers. Naval Operations Including Diplomatic Background From 1785 Through 1805. This was President Thomas Jefferson’s War.

Two “My Uncle Columbo,” 2-hour episodes written and created by me, including the TV pilot for the rebirth of the Columbo character, played by Columbo’s nephew, Andy, a LAPD sergeant in Vice promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to homicide after his Uncle’s untimely death in his sleep. I have all the essentials, including a production budget, Cast Day Out of Days, and potential casting of characters, a full-bible with a rendition of future episodes, etc.

I Had contacted NBC-Universal because they control the rights to the character, and their law department informed me, if I have a literary agent that they are familiar with in conducting business, we can proceed forward. I’m awaiting that in finding a literary agent match. I acknowledge I once had 5, yes 5 different literary agents, and each one left me after I got the door opened for them at various productions to submit my material. It was then, that I went out on my own.

I’m currently involved with writing two fiction novels, since long ago, Burt Reynolds told me to “write a book, and they’ll pay attention.” Now, hopefully launching another series based on reality entitled, “ERT=CERT: The National Championships,” to which I attended and took part in with the entire BICEPP Executive Board as Judges, when it was known as the “BICEPP Challenge,” over a weekend at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. I believe it will be an interesting competition program, this time with celebrity hosts, that will attract an audience considering there are over thousands of CERT volunteers throughout this nation and more around the world, including a CERT Junior Division being trained today to compete against all comers.

Thank you for allowing me to present myself to you.

    Michael Kemp
