    DAY 3 ASSIGNMENT

What I learned doing this assignment is to do the hard work and make sure everyone knows exactly what they want and their motives. And Intrigue is like motive to me. These three words still confuse me.

Subject line: (Jolene’s) World and Characters!

Logline: When a couple is ambuscaded into a marriage by the bride’s father/minister after three months of dating, married life reveals the groom’s fatal tendencies.

    Big M.I.S.
Big Mystery: Will Katarinya figure out who she is married to and escape? Or will she end up dead?
Big Intrigue: Shaka’s unstable mental health. Manic/ Bipolar, a narcissist and has a savior complex.
Big Suspense: Will Shaka kill Katarinya?

    2. The Intriguing World:
    Their Hollywood Apartment:
    – Online videogame world?
    – The Kitchen?
    – The Bedroom?

    The Golf Course?
    The Car?
    Massage Parlors?

    Unwitting but resourceful Hero: Katarinya
Mystery: Will she leave or will she die?
    Suspense: Will Shaka murder her?
    Intrigue: She loves Shaka.

    Dangerous Villain: Shaka
Mystery: What is Shaka going to do to Katarinya?
Suspense: Will Katarinya get ahead of him and escape?
Intrigue: His loyalty changes if he doesn’t get his way. His mental health is fatally unstable.

    RED HERRING: Katarinya’s father.
Mystery: Why did he marry them in public without asking permission or telling them or anyone else?
Suspense: Will he help Katarinya undo what he did?
Intrigue: He just didn’t want his daughter to be lonely so if he made a choice for her so she’d be safe.

    Subject line: (Jolene’s) Big M.I.S.

Logline: When a couple is ambuscaded into a marriage by the bride’s father/minister after three months of dating, married life reveals the groom’s fatal tendencies.

    CONVENTIONS:

    Unwitting but resourceful Hero:

    • Katarinya – a lonely woman who just wants to be loved, so much so that she ignores red flags and her own instincts.

Dangerous Villain: Shaka, a man who really wants a wife and finds out he is never satisfied when he gets what he wants. He will go to extremes to get everything he wants even if it means getting rid of her.

High stakes: Katarinya’s Safety/Life and Possibly Shaka’s mental state

    Life and death situations:

    • Shaka blames her for everything and emotionally abuses her so that she is unable to make rational choices.

    • Whenever Shaka cooks her food – he spends lots of time and adds things from the poisonous succulent plants

    • When Katarinya sleeps- she wakes up to him covering her mouth and says he was trying to stop her from grinding her teeth

    • Shaka gets a knife from his brother as a Christmas present

    • Shaka sleeps with prostitutes and doesn’t use protection

    • Shaka “accidentally” knocks things and breaks them.

    • Shaka has different personalities – He is bipolar and you never know who you’re going to get

    • Every object in two’s, one disappears… at first cups… Shaka says they broke … even though they were unbreakable.

This movie is thrilling because: Throughout the story, we are constantly worried for Katarinyas life as She tries to understand what is going on in the marriage. Will she figure it out and leave before it’s too late? Each time she uncovers something about Shaka and tries to help him, he becomes vulnerable and no longer can get away with things under that pretense, becoming even more dangerous.

    Big Mystery:

    • Will Katarinya figure out who she is married to and escape? Or will she end up dead? Will others believe her, that he’s trying to kill her?

    Big Intrigue:

Shaka is bipolar, a narcissist and has a savior complex. The little boy in him needs to be loved, but he trusts no one even when he is being loved. He also thinks he’s here to help people, to save them from themselves. He thinks he wants to be married but when he is loved, he doesn’t trust it and when there are normal marital problems, his world falls apart and his self hatred magnifies and is projected onto his wife. He becomes suspicious of everyone. He entertains his fears and brings them to fruition.

    Big Suspense:

    • Will Shaka kill Katarinya?

Subject line: (Single White Female) Thriller Conventions

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” I learned to distinguish between Mystery, Intrigue and Suspense. It all generally seems the same to me. But Hal’s definitions really help.

Unwitting but Resourceful Hero: Allison Jones: A young lady who finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her. They break up and she decides to put an ad in the paper for a female roommate.

Dangerous Villain: “Hedy” Hedra Carlson, the new roommate that Allison chooses.

High stakes: Allison’s Life, Her boyfriend, Sam’s life, Her neighbor, Graham’s life, Her boss, Mitchell’s life, and the dog’s life.

Life and death situations: When Hedy feels unsafe and insecure, she loses her ability to reason and the person/animal that is near her when she is in that emotional state is now the target. For instance, when Hedy was first abandoned by Allison. Allison decided to get back with her boyfriend and was out with him. Hedy was home stewing and the puppy, that she bought for Allison was with her. The puppy who needed attention was eventually thrown off the balcony and killed by Hedy.

    – When the boss came to Graham’s apartment to look for Allison
    – When Sam the boyfriend/fiancee threatened to tattle on Hedy for seducing him.
    – When Allison sent out an email asking for help.
    – When Hedy sneaks into Graham’s apartment and hides
    – When Hedy is gives Allie pills to commit suicide
    – When Allie’s boss tries to rape her
    – When Allie discovers Hedy’s secret
    – The list goes on.

This movie is thrilling because? We are worried for Allison, because we have no idea what Hedy is capable of. She is a strange cat and you know she is up to something. Also, the men treat Allison in an awful way.

BIG MYSTERY: Who is Hedy, really?

    BIG INTRIGUE:
Hedy is a twin, but her twin died when she was young and now Hedy is always looking for a replacement so she can relive her past and unconsciously tries to resolve it.

BIG SUSPENSE: Will Allie break free from Hedy’s grasp?

Anything else you’d like to say about what made this movie a great thriller? It just shows us what can happen when you don’t work on your past trauma.

Ha! I appreciate it. You being a real person on the other side is great to hear. So many AI things these days and since this is all done on our own accord, I wanted to send a message knowing that you might be offended but if it was a bot, hoping it would disappear. Sorry you had to go through such trouble. And I’m sure you’re a damn good writer. I look forward to your critiques on my stuff. I welcome it. I saw your idea, have you seen Secret Obsession? It may or may not be similar or supply inspiration. Have a great day! We are so blessed to be able to do what we love.

    Hi Eileen,

Noticed that you didn’t introduce yourself or sign the confidentiality agreement? I find it odd that when I clicked on your notification, something suspicious automatically downloaded onto my computer. So, I am a bit wary. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope so, but I’d feel better if you introduced yourself and signed the agreement since we are about to post all our ideas. Thanks.
