Subject Line: Brian Producer / Manager

I’m going to come at this a little differently, because I had a manager way back when. The way I see managers is that they want talented writers who can work in a variety of genres. Selling spec scripts is difficult. My manager would often come to me with something either he wanted or a connection wanted, and I would be asked to rewrite (punch up) a project. Even doing this well does not guarantee success. I did a rewrite on a project which got a “recommend” from CAA but still floundered. So, in approaching managers I would probably discuss the range of my work, the fact that I’ve been produced, and the fact that I can and will do rewrites (quickly). Maybe I’m wrong here.

In approaching a producer, I would concentrate on selling him or her one pitch, probably in a genre that he or she frequently works in.

    Love Curse

Logline: A woman who believes she’s cursed at love finds out she actually is and rallies her friends together to defeat the unique man responsible.

Unique story, a different take on the typical rom com.
    Interesting title.
Rom coms are very bankable. Plus, it’s filmed in L.A. with no special effects. The budget is not an issue.
Combines the adventure and creative element of “Enchanted” with a diverse group of characters like “Crazy Rich Asians.”
A strong role for a 25-40 actress, as she takes the active role in stopping the curse.

    Love Curse
    Romantic Comedy
A woman who believes she’s cursed at love finds out she actually is and rallies her friends together to defeat the unique man responsible. From a contest where this placed as a finalist: The concept of this story is really fun, creative and unique. I love this twist on your typical romantic comedy. The characters feel distinctive and stand out from one another. The flow of the read was nice and easy to follow. The writer did a great job with the dialogue in this script as well. It’s nicely paced and feels natural coming from each character.
I would probably aim for an actress’ production company first.

My name is Brian. I’ve probably written about 20 projects. I had a horror movie produced in 2010. I took some time away from screenwriting for a variety of reasons (mainly having children) and have gotten back into it, having a short film made in 2022. I’m hoping to find a way to get the right people to read some of my material. I live in upstate New York, so that’s an issue. I’ve tried the contest route a little recently, and have been a finalist (or top 10) in some events, but that doesn’t seem to open any doors, no matter the placement or feedback.

And like you John, it took me a while to get to the right place.
