Paul Sokal’s Marketable Components
1. Logline: What if an anonymous committee of lay people decides who lives and who dies? In 1961, a 25-year-old teacher is shattered to learn she is dying of kidney failure and if she can’t convince that committee that she deserves to be one of the first five people in the world to receive chronic dialysis, she’ll be sent home to die.
2. Components of marketability
a. Unique
b. Great Title
c. True
d. First
e. Great role for a bankable actor
3. This script is inspired by a true story that has not been told before on the big screen. It involves ordinary people who are suddenly thrust into life and death decisions, including a protagonist who must fight for her own life, only to realize, once she’s be saved, that others deserve salvation more than she does, triggering her to make the ultimate sacrifice.
4. What I learned doing this assignment is to focus my pitch on a marketable aspect of this movie, not so much as the story.

Paul Sokal’s project and market.
1. Genre: Drama
Title: Who Will Live?
Concept: What if a committee of lay people decided who gets to live and who will die?
2. This story, inspired by real events and untold in cinema, reveals how a small invention, for the first time, turned a universally fatal disease into one that is survivable, affecting 800,000 Americans today.
3. I feel like I need someone to help guide me in my new career and connect me to people who will consider my body of work and make films from my scripts. Therefore, I am targeting a manager.
4. I learned a pitch shouldn’t be a “book report” and should focus on why it makes good business sense to invest in my movie.

My name is Paul Sokal. I began screenwriting in October 2021 and since starting, I’ve written eight features and one short. I’ve placed in multiple competitions and have received Consider and Recommend ratings from coverage. Nonetheless, I have failed at getting any notice so that’s what I’m hoping to get out of this class, learning the skills to get a film produced. I started my screenwriting career after 40+ years of practicing medicine, which gave me an intimate looks at humanity, which I believe is the source of most good stories and I consider my previous career as my writing school.
