Roger Puts Essence to Work
What I learned — The need to look beneath the scene itself — what essence is reveled.
Kali’s Death Song
Scene ONE: (pg2)
Location — Secure office in Corporate building.
LOG LINE: Character 1 (Dr Born) is ordered to a meeting to answer for the catastrophic release of virulent mutated Prion particles attacking both biological and physical objects.
ESSENCE: I’ve Discovered– Scientist is being setup to take the blame for Corporate’s mistakes. .He is terrified as his family is in danger if he does not do exactly as ordered.
NEW LOGLINE– Corporate is looking for scapegoats to cover their catastrophic failure to contain a new, mutated and horrifying Prion release.
SCENE TWO: Outside Corporate Humvee — small clearing enclosed by Granite cliffs on 3 sides. Three security guards have carried a medicated Dr. Born outside to get him into the secure Lab. The one exit road is on other side of electrified fence. Thick forest borders the group.
LOG LINE: Terrified guards have carried Dr Born (drugged) onto ground adjacent to Lab entrance. Prion mutated creatures are growing in numbers. The environmental destruction has destroyed the continental shelfs throughout the world.
ESSENCE I’VE DISCOVERED. — Environmental collapse, deadly mutations and corporate corruption are endemic. Destroying life on Earth. Can anything be done?
NEW LOGLINE: Can three ostracized scientists, with disabilities, solve the Prion scourge?
SCENE THREE
Location: Main laboratory — The three scientists are standing in a circle.
LOG LINE — Three scientists argue about what to do. How are they to continue after discovery of enormous underground facilities. Michele has an epileptic seizure, in the midst, describes what she sees. Revealing the magnitude of the structures
ESSENCE I’VE DISCOVERED. Their purpose here is partially revealed. How can they proceed? Everything has changed.
NEW LOGLINE: The mysteries keep growing. What has happened to the population of scientists? Why are they really here? Their disabilities are helping them. What happened to the small group preceding them?
SCENE FOUR:
Location: Primary lab. All three standing around a mysterious box.
LOG LINE: The three scientists open a mysterious box. Inside is a metallic objects glowing slightly with a greenish hue.
ESSENCE I’VE DISCOVERED: Keep looking below the obvious. What feelings? What behavior? What does all this mean?
NEW LOGLINE: New mystery reveals the depth of the entire operation. A box contains a mailable, greenish glowing metal object. It reacts to the touch — a mix of metal and organic structure. Is this dangerous? We have been threatened. What’s worse? Thorium Corporation or the strange events here?
SCENE FIVE:
Location: Small room with food dispensers. On a level down from original lab.
LOGLINE: The three scientists discover an other person hiding in the corner. Why is he here? What does he want? Why is he so frightened?
ESSENCE I’VE DISCOVERED: Allow events to “pop-up” . keep looking for situations that can expand or grow.
NEW LOGLINE: The team is exploring new vistas in the complex. They come upon a survivor — what can he reveal? Is he dangerous? Why does he have a weapon in his hand. Should he come with us?

Roger Finds The Essence
What I learned is — These perspectives (essence) is far removed from my “normal” writing — technical/analytic. Thus I am behind. I’m learning to expand my horizons — my initial horizons — feeling; action; situation (opinions). However the assignment lists these differently: Concept; Story; Situation; Character; Conflict; Action; and Dialogue.
Roger Puts Essence to Work
SCRIP ONE I CHOSE: HEAT
LOCATION: Office in a financial company.
LOGLINE 1: Business transaction falls terribly apart. Character 1 calls Character 2. “you can keep your money” and “I’m speaking to a dead man”.
I’VE DISCOVERED — Every scene can be presented differently differently
LOGLINE 2:When running risky business dealings — reactions can go terribly awry.
—
LOCATION: Upscale hotel room.
LOGLINE 1: Prostitute learns how not to treat a dangerous client,
I’VE DISCOVERED — Describing scenes is not the way to find the essence.
LOGLINE 2: Danger spins over to police, crooks and public. The stakes keep getting worse.
—
LOCATION: Kitchen in a small coffee shop.
LOGLINE 1: Hard working cook, Excon on probation is abused by employer. Entire shop is filled by unhappy workers and customers. Cook is presented with dangerous job — he leaves. (Anything is better tha here).
I’VE DISCOVERED: Up the anti and anything can happen.
LOGLINE 2: Anger and despair grow inside shop — pushing to boiling point, Character cracks, making a dangerous choice.
…
LOCATION: Nighttime: Side of road, Car is pulled over by a cop car.
LOGLINE: Cop approaches driver side window. Driver and Cop now recognize each other. A long time feud — “good” versus “bad”. Could go any direction. They meet at neutral location. Both “Good” and “Bad” say how this will end.
I’VE DISCOVERED: Looking below the surface reveals more ways to “go”,
PS — This class is frankly very difficult. I find technical subjects SO much easier!

This completes the Group Release Form for the class.

I have worked with my wife on 4 screenplays; One on my own; currently have one in process. What I want to get from the class — Become a better writer; understand as many aspects of Screenwriting as possible. Background in Mental health field; Followed by working with unemployed and underemployed folks. Connect them with best fit to businesses for on-the-job-training. This was a private company working a federal grant. Thank god I had a severe childhood trauma. Difficult — but this allowed me to connect with folks from all backgrounds. I was crazy god at this. Helped so many folks. The woo-woo part – I didn’t feel I was working. Next into work with at risk youth in high schools in San Francisco. Same — did not feel like I was working. This program then came in number one of 22 (or 24) operations in major cities.
Recently I was in charge of R&D on recovery techniques on complex ores. Quite a change — amazing challenge.
I love creative work. (play). I have always written nonfiction. I had no idea I can write fiction (with technical input, cell biology, metallurgy, multiple analytic devices, etc). I love the “teachers” and the dedication they have. Took classes from them a few years ago. Have groan as a writer — but still a beginner. (really).
I’m already behind in the lessons. AND I’m taking another course on the 15th.
This fiction writing is quit a challenge.Thank you for reading my intro.
