    Assignment Lesson 8

Subject line: Rich Bradley’s Inviting Obsession Through Mystery

What I learned doing this assignment is you can layer different mysteries so you always have something to hide and always have somethings to be revealed to keep the suspense and interest. Also, how to work the short and long term mysteries together so there is always a reservoir drama and situations to draw from.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:
Watch the next episode of your Example Show and focus on the mysteries that have been created in that show. Also, notice the difference between the big picture mysteries that are a big part of the plot across the entire season versus the smaller mysteries.
Tell us about the mysteries from this show.

    • Big Picture mysteries for “The Americans”:
o What is the end game for Phillip and Elizabeth?
    o Do they get caught?
    o Do they get killed?
o Do they defect? Does just Phillip defect?
o What happens with Phillips real love and his son he just found out about that Elizabeth doesn’t know about?
o Does FBI Stan really know who they are?
o Will Stan get caught cheating?
    • Smaller mysteries:
o Will they catch the assassin who went off the grid?
o Will Elizabeth and Claudia tension come to a head?

    ASSIGNMENT 2:
Create two mysteries for your show — one that shows up strong in the Pilot and the other that is revealed over time.
    1. Create your Shocking Event Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
    • A. Shocking Event: Dred is shot in the head by Jay on Big Chuck’s orders.
    • B. Secret: Why did Big Chuck want Dred dead and why have Jay do it?
    • C. Investigation: Who was Dred and what did he do to Big Chuck?
    • WWWWW and How:
    • WHAT: Jay was picked to do a hit on Dred. Jay took Vic with him without telling him what was happening.
    • WHEN: On their way to a BBQ with Vic’s girlfriend’s family. Vic is going to propose to Yossie.
    • WHERE: In Miami Gardens.
    • WHY: To take back drugs and cash.
    • WHO: Big Chuck chose Jay, someone new to be further removed from the situation. He didn’t know Vic would be with him.
    • HOW: Looked like a home invasion, but was targeted.
    • Part Withheld: Dred was about to become an informant in another murder case-for Det. Kelley- (possibly implicating BC or Big Unc) and saw ARam, BC right hand man at the police station. ARam is a Miami Dade Narcotics detective.
    2. Create the Over Time Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
    • A. Cover up: Who killed Vic’s and Big Chuck’s father.
    • B. Secret: Big Unc was the mastermind
    • C. Reveals: Jay’s father was involved
    • WHAT: Big Chuck’s father was a Miami detective who was murdered with a drug addict,
    • Jay’s father.
    • WHEN: 15 years ago
    • WHERE: Miami in an abandoned apartment in the pork and beans
    • WHY: Big Chuck’s father Charles and Big Unc, who are brothers in law, had a falling out over Big Unc’s drug dealing. Vic’s father was a childhood friend of Charles and wanted to warn him about Big Unc’s plan.
    • WHO: Big Chuck chose Jay for the Dred hit because he found out Jay’s father may be involved in his father’s death. Wants to try to find leverage with Jay’s family for info. He didn’t know Vic would be with him.
    • HOW: Execution with no witnesses.
    • Part Withheld: Det. Kelley and the current police chief were responding detectives. They hid evidence to make Big Chuck’s father look clean.

    ASSIGNMENT LESSON 4

    Rich Bradley’s Intriguing Character Layers

What I learned doing this assignment is going through the process of working with the characters to reveal deep and intriguing layers for each character often reveals connections of intrigue between the characters.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the places you’ve already seen Character Intrigue in the previous episodes.

    • Hidden agendas: Phillip and Elizabeth want to take down the US government while looking like upstanding citizens.
    • Competition: Phillip and Elizabeth constantly are competing with each on who has a better idea to complete a project. Stan seems to be competing against the whole FBI office to stand out.
    • Conspiracy: Phillip and Elizabeth together with the rest of the undercover agents for the KGB are trying to take down the US government.
    • Secrets: Elizabeth doesn’t love her husband and puts the KGB and Russia above her family. Phillip wants to leave the KGB and defect to the United States with his family.
    • Deception: Stan always seems to know more than what he lets on. Phillip and Elizabeth are deceiving Stan and their entire community.
    • Wound: Elizabeth was sexually abused and assaulted in training and has scars from her upbringing. Phillip left the love of his life to join the KGB, he now loves his wife, but she does not love him. Stan has underlying trauma from his last assignment.
    • Secret Identity: Phillip is a loving American husband and father. Elizabeth is a woman trapped in an arranged marriage who wants out.

    2. Watch the next episode and see how Character Intrigue is being used to create the need to see more episodes.

    • Hidden agendas: Pres. Reagan is shot and no one knows if it was Russia, a lone actor, or a government coup. Sec of State assumes control at White House. Elizabeth’s agenda is made clear: she wants the war and to try to overthrow the US government. Phillip wants to be an American.
    • Competition: Stan is working to separate himself from all the other FBI agents. His partner doesn’t tell him that Stan’s CI is being trailed. Once again Elizabeth and Phillip are competing on who has the best plan of attack.
    • Conspiracy: Is there a coup attempt by Haig so the US will attack Russia? Phillip decides to hold intel from Russia so they don’t over react and cause WW3.
    • Secrets: Stan is developing feelings for his Russian mole. Phillip still follows KGB orders but is shifting more and more to the American side.
    • Deception: Charles Duluth the conservative reporter is actually a sworn communist who helps Phillip. Elizabeth and Phillip act like they are concerned neighbors when they press Stan for information on the assassination attempt.
    • Wound: Elizabeth losing her father and her mother not accepting government help. Phillip isn’t respected or loved by Elizabeth. Stan is struggling to reconnect with his wife after going undercover with the KKK. Sandra is feeling isolated and unloved in DC with Stan.
    • Secret Identity: Phillip sees himself as an American. Elizabeth is a soldier fighting an active war. Stan is still playing the role of an undercover cop in his mind.

    ASSIGNMENT LESSON 1

    THE AMERICANS

    5 Star Model

What I learned from this assignment is even with a great/unique show concept, becoming conflated with the characters, their emotions and motivations is critical to wanting to keep watching the next episode.

    THE AMERICANS

    5 Star Model

    1. Big Picture Hooks: An All-American couple with two kids living just outside of Washington DC in the 1980s are really uncover KGB agents.

    2. Amazing and Intriguing Character: The couple, Phillip and Elizabeth, who were raised in the USSR to speak English with no accent and be “American”, have very different views of their relationship and who they are.

    3. Empathy / Distress: Elizabeth has gone through abuse and rape because she believed in the cause. Phillip actually loves Elizabeth, their kids, and their life in America. Elizabeth’s number one priority is unflinching loyalty to the mother land.

    4. Layers / Open Loops: Although they seem to be the perfect American family, things get complicated when counter terrorism FBI agent moves in across the street. Elizabeth thinks it’s a coincidence, but Phillip senses it could be something more. He wants to come clean and go into witness protection, but she is too committed to the cause and refuses to.

    5. Inviting Obsession: After the kidnapping and removal of a high-profile former KGB traitor got messy, the FBI agent moving across the street has the husband concerned. Will they stay committed to the espionage cause, risking everything including life imprisonment and even death? Or will they take millions from the US for info to betray the USSR?

    Rich Bradley’s Terrifying Monster

What I learned doing this assignment is you need to really envision and tap into the fear and terror your monster needs to evoke in the audience. Not just on the surface, you need to feel it.

Create an early version of your monster.

    1. Tell us what or who your monster is. The Luminous Palms Society is a secret group. They are a group of powerful citizens (in the public’s eye) whose lives would be ruined if it was revealed who they were. They would be shunned, imprisoned, and executed. Anyone in the group who brings attention or suspicion to the group disappears. The high priests are no exception.

    2. Give us a few sentences for each of the following for your monster:

Their Terror: The Society members continually need fresh blood, literally. The members use a cabal to identify, kidnap, and cover the sacrifices.<div>

    <div>

Their Mystery: When sacrifice victims are kidnapped and held in the sanctum, they don’t know why and don’t know what will happen. It is only at the last moment during the ceremony is it revealed to them what is about to happen. They see the ghoulish faces in the hooded robes as the blood drains from their body. One member may even be the secret leader, higher than the priest, alive for centuries.

    <div>

Their Fear Provoking Appearance: The society members wear hooded robes during the ceremony. They can appear ghoulish and frail until they get a taste of fresh blood, when they become animated and alive.

    <div>

Their Rules: 1. They must be upstanding citizens in involved in the community. 2. They are bound by a lifelong blood oath. This becomes a curse if they try to leave. 3. There is a council of elders who hold the most power and knowledge within the society. NEEDS MORE

Their Mythology: The society believes that their blood rituals grant them extended lifespans and the ability to resist aging. They are driven by the fear of mortality and a desire to achieve immortality through their practices.

    The Visit Horror Conventions

I learned how to outline the high points and necessary elements of a horror film.

    Title / Concept: The Visit

Terrorize The Characters: Over the course of week the walls slowly close in. “Grandma” asking Becca to get in the oven. Chasing them under the house. Scratching and banging at night. Finding out they aren’t the real grandparents but still trapped in the house with them. Finding the real grandparents dead in the basement.

Isolation: The grandkids are trapped on a farm with their grandparents that they just met who appear to be going through mental health crises.

Death: The real grandparents were murdered as well as the Stacy who was checking on them.

    Monster/Villain: The mentally ill “grandparents”

High Tension: The “grandparents” behavior begins to get more erratic and creepier. “Grandma” sundowning every night, scratching the walls every night naked. “Grandpa” hiding dirty diapers, cleaning guns, attacking innocent bystanders in public.

Departure from Reality: Trapped on a farm with demented, mentally ill elderly murderers and only finding out after a week of staying there.

Moral Statement: A woman who didn’t appreciate her parents is now in a situation where she lost her parents and could even lose her kids because of it.

    3. Anything else you’d like to say about what made this movie a great horror film?

I thought the film did a great job starting from a normal spot and gradually isolating Becca and Tyler. Slowly the fear and terror were increased with small, strange interactions with their “grandparents”.

    4. With your concept, fill in each of these Conventions for your story.

Concept: A Miami detective with a dark history and psychic powers of his own has been investigating missing people. He starts to find links to a secret society, “The Luminous Palms Society”. The society practices an ancient religion called “Mystara” and uses the kidnapped victims as sacrifices so their members can have wealth, power, and long lives. The more similar the victim is to the member, the more effective the sacrifice is. And the younger the victim, the more powerful. But it must be renewed consistently.

Terrorize The Characters: The characters are kidnapped, tortured, and sacrificed in various ways. The detective sees visions but can’t decipher them.

Isolation: Victims are kidnapped and held in the “Sanctum” where they are tortured until their ceremony.

Death: throat cut while hanging inverted to drain blood, decapitation, mutilation.

Monster/Villain: The cult, the high priest, the socialite

High Tension: Disappearing people held in captivity until sacrifices, a missing pregnant woman that will die with her baby when she gives birth. A detective that has visions but can’t piece it all together in time.

Departure from Reality: Being kidnapped and held for sacrifices.

Moral Statement: When society celebrates wealth, fame, and success above all else, people will go to unspeakable lengths to attain them.

I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.

    3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.

    4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.

    5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.

    6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

This completes the Group Release Form for the class.
