The GROUP of four adventurers around a stone fire pit enjoying the evening. Nick, 33 is their guide. BEN, 32, is cocky, athletic and overtly handsome. NAYA, 31,BEN’s fiance, is the definition of beauty queen- long brunette hair, twisted into a messy bun, hazel eyes and a smattering of freckles over her petite nose. JAMES, 30, is build like a truck- stocky and broad shouldered with untamed auburn hair, crystal blue eyes and a goatee. His wife CAMERON, 29, is waifish and sinewy with thin, straight, blonde hair and intelligent brown eyes. Then there’s NICK, 33, their guide. His maverick good looks accented by his unassuming yet dazzling smile and his penchant for woven bracelets. One of the bracelets, called a mala, is made from 100 small peach wood beads.

(teasing, to James)

JAMES

EXT. TROLLTUNGA CLIFF, NORWAY – MORNING
A cloudless day. THE GROUP stand at the edge of the gravity defying cliff jutting 700 meters out over Lake Ringedalsvatnet into open air. ~They all wear helmets, goggles and base jumping suits.
NICK adjusts the group (((says stuff about gear))) (((gives last minute instruction)))
VARIOUS HOOTS and HOLLERS. Then SILENCE.
They walk in V-shape formation; and, one by one, walk off the cliff’s edge with Lemming-like commitment. The WIND is deafening as each Friend slices through it. The BILLOWING of bright jump suits. The acceleration past jagged rock formations, bristled tree tops and a few icy remnants of winter. Parachutes deploy. Everyone lands safely, except for BEN who falls, partially in a ditch and breaks his ankle.
He WAILS in pain.
INT. BEN AND NAYA’S LOFT – DENVER, CO – DAY
BEN is watching television his leg propped up with ice. He has several pill bottles on the end table next to him.
NAYA
Hon, can you lower the volume on that? I’m getting ready for a zoom meeting with a client.
BEN
Whatever.
NAYA
Let’s get sushi tonight.
BEN
Not that last place. It was shit.
On the television an ad for U-Meret – a revolutionary treatment for pain.
BEN
Fuck this. I should do that.
NAYA
I don’t know, seems too good to be true.
BEN
Call the doctor for me, refill the prescription.
NAYA
You don’t need any more of those pills, Ben. You’re out 3 months from your break.
BEN
Shut the fuck up. Just do it get me this U-Meret thing. It fuckin hurts still.
NAYA gets text from NICK. They talk about BEN’S condition.
BEN
Who the fuck is texting you, Nick again? Fuckin’ sponge…looking for my next twenty g’s for a trip?
NAYA
No. He genuinely cares about you.
BEN
Yeah, right. My pills.
NAYA
We’re listening to this doctor of yours and the media…these pills..they’re no good.
BEN
Every five minutes there’s an ad for a pill. If you call about this U-Meret thing…it’s no pills.
NAYA

NAYA texts NICK…will he research U-Meret.

They’re on location in Zimbabwe right now, but shooting is really difficult. The terrain is rough.

CAMERON
In total truth, That’s one of the hardest things to come to grips with.
BEN

What I learned:
The antagonist is present even though he’s not visible…that has to be made clear even in ACT 1.

Adventurers Ben, Naya, James and Cameron are sitting around campfire talking about their big base jump tomorrow. Nick, their guide is taking it all in. He stays up watches Naya having sex with Ben through shadows in tent.
ADD THEME: What freedom really means to each of them.

TE1 Nick falls deeper for Naya.
EXT. TROLL WALL, NORWAY – MORNING
Ben, Naya, James and Cameron are getting a final pep talk from guide Nick before base jumping. Ben’s all adrenaline, Naya is patient but still hesitant, James does a prayer to himself, but ready to go. Cameron is blasé about the whole thing.
TE2 Ben breaks his ankle on the fall.
INT. BEN AND NAYA’S LOFT
Naya learns about U-Meret from an infomercial an answer for pain. She sends Ben after months of trying everything else. She’s afraid he’ll get addicted to opioids.
ADD: feeling helpless, victim to the drug manufacturers, listening to the wrong people.
Nick needs money so shops himself out to another adventurer…one guy who offers him a lot of money, wants to dog sled in Siberia. Nick arranges it through a Russian recluse/survivalist friend. The adventurer hits on him and Nick is stuck. However, he learns a lot from the recluse…folklore about an evil force Koschei.
TE Nick learns his limits what he won’t do for money… Flying home he sees the infomercial for U-Meret. Does research it checks out as a cure from the Ural Mountains.
ADD: Temptation to take the easy way out…buy into the hype that is spoon fed to them.
INT: DIA AIRPORT – DAY
Nick meets with Naya and the rest of the adventurers for a beer, they talk about Ben. He’s already getting better with U-Meret…as a matter of fact Cameron is trying it for her leg cramps and James is doing it for his shoulder…it’s a miracle cure. 5 clinics in Denver already….it’s like Starbucks!
TE Nick back in New Orleans decides to move to Evergreen, CO. Leaves his old life behind. Thinks this is the best thing for him. Closer to Naya.
ADD: selfishness…out for your own gain, grab what you can.
INT: NICK’S CABIN -DAY
Naya is helping Nick with his website. He notices a change in her behavior. Ben and the group come over with steaks and they grill and chat around the fire pit. Planning the next adventure. Nick notices that they do not react to pain.

EXT: DENVER STREET – DAY
Nick prepping for next adventure sees U-Meret clinic with line out the door. BOGO.
INT; NICK’S CABIN – DAY
At home looks up Koschei. Even the president of the United States does U-Meret…to treat his old battle wound.
EXT: MOUNTAIN – DAY
Nick meets one who wants to go on the next adventure…he looks like Koschei and he’s hitting on Naya. Ben is completely uninterested. Surgeons are going out of business. But surgeon isn’t the guy.
TE: Nick realizes something is very wrong and he has to get involved, but how. Knows he’s going about it the wrong way. Wants to take Naya with him. She says no. Cameron’s pregnant.
ADD: Koschei realizes that Nick has drawn a line in the sand…he may be a true obstacle.
EXT: RUSSIAN RECLUSE HUT – DAY/NIGHT
Nick shows up. Tell me everything. I think it’s happening.
TE: Nick has to stop Koschei.
He trains for mental warfare and creates runes and rituals to give him success. But where is Koschei?
Koschei presents in Nick’s vision, but one of the recluse’s assistants is a minion. Nick is defeated, the recluse is killed. Nick barely escapes.
TE: Nick is now paranoid and scared. He calls Naya she’s on her way to a retreat. A team of doctors who invented the U-Meret device are recruiting a global network of consultants in Aspen CO.
ADD: Koschei moves faster to complete his plan.
INT: ASPEN RETREAT – NIGHT
Nick finds Naya, professes his love. Kisses her. Proves to her the truth. She agrees to fight with him.
TE: Nick decides to die for love, for freedom, for the world.
INT: ESTATE GIANT LOG CABIN GREAT ROOM – NIGHT
Chairs, tables in concentric circular formation. In the middle, on the floor the U-Meret logo. Devices for “home use” spread throughout the room.
Meals of bug protein and dried fruit.
ADD: Koschei is rewarding mindless obedience. He has enough souls to manifest on earth.
THE PANEL of DOCTORS enter the room. Backs to the logo facing out talk to the guests. With translations for international guests. Devices are solar powered. The event is closed to the press but cameras are outside the private estate.
EXT: ESTATE – NIGHT
Nick tries to talk to the press get coverage of his side. They think he’s crazy. Police arrest him.
EXT: ROAD
Naya crashes into the police car to save Nick. She doesn’t feel the injury, further proving the effect of U-Meret.
INT: ESTATE GIANT LOG CABIN GREAT ROOM – NIGHT
Nick and Naya perform ritual and use spiritual weapons to battle Koschei. The chain reaction kills everyone in the room.
Nick and Koschei final showdown. Nick must give up his life to save Naya.
Naya, battered and bloody, faces the dawn alone. She feels pain. Ouch.

What I learned:
I’m tempted to get into dialogue and description…but I just make quick notes and move on. This is not perfect and I’m okay with this. I see the weak points a lot easier with this method.

What I learned…The evil force though unseen for most of the film is all around Nick, like a boa constrictor circling then tightening…I need to capture that tension with each step Nick takes.
Steps Nick takes:
1. Reveal true feelings for Naya, expose himself to love and rejection
2. Fail at an adventure hurt himself of another physically.
3. Realize that the energies of the universe are not all wise or benevolent.
4. Travel rugged terrain to find a mentor.
5. Learn how to fight for his soul and depend on a mentor
6. Lose a mentor.
7. give up his soul, the ultimate sacrifice for the one he loves.

What I learned…I’m merging the Mini Movie Method with the 4 Act Structure to create a stronger story. I call it story with a spine.
Concept: A revolutionary non-invasive medical procedure “Acu-Bond” works miraculously on pain but also removes souls bit by bit, fueling an interdimensional evil force, Koschei that wants to take over the universe. Lonely adventurer Nick becomes wise to the plot and must find Koschei’s den and stop it before it consumes the soul of the woman he loves (and the world too).
Main Conflict: Nick is plagued and terrorized by Koschei in a race against time to gain the knowledge and tools from across the globe needed to destroy the evil unleashing on the world.
Nick Old Ways
1. Only out for the next adventure
2. Sees himself as a speck in the universe…no one cares about him. But nature respects him.
3. Relies on charm and wits to manipulate people.
Nick New Ways
1. Has a clear mission that needs a no-fail plan
2. Knows he’s a speck but a vital key in the fate of the universe.
3. Uses his experience to create a strategy with the help of others.
ACT 1
Opening: Base jumping off the Troll Wall in Norway. Adventurers Ben, Naya, James, Cameron await their next thrill. Guide Nick, prepares them for the jump. Charms the friends less eager to jump, and gets them all to go for it.
Inciting Incident: They jump off. Ben, the “leader” of the group, lands poorly and breaks his ankle. Weeks later, Ben is popping opioids like tic tacs and Nick is running out of money. He needs to find another group to pay for globe trekking.
Turning Point: Naya learns about Acu-Bond. Nick talks her into trying it and it works. Nick has fallen in love with Naya.
ACT 2
Reaction: Ben pushes everyone he knows to do Acu-Bond as it is all the rage and clinics are opening up all over the world. Nick takes advantage of the situation, but begins to see red flags in the behavior of the group. They don’t react to pain at all. They seek out painful things including S&M between the couples.
The Plan: Nick tries to get with Naya and does research on Acu-Bond. The research looks iron-clad. But he taps his spiritual side and finds one of his guides…a mentor who taught him how to climb…and he tells him about Koschei. The guide fears Koschei is interfering on earth.
Turning Point: Nick decides to forgo the next adventure and a chance to be Naya to travel to a mag in Siberia to gain the knowledge needed to fight Koschei.
ACT 3
New Plan: Nick trains with the mag, learns what must be done to destroy Koschei.
New Insights: Koschei presents itself in a vision, closing in on women, assuming the bodily form of a trusted advisor…across the universe, but especially Naya.
Turning Point: Nick attempts to fight Koschei, but one of the mag’s assistants has been a minion all along. Nick loses the battle miserably and the mag is killed.
ACT 4
New Plan: Nick discovers that the group has gone on a Acu-Bond wellness retreat with hundreds of people. Nick goes to the retreat.
Climax: Nick battles Koschei, but in the process must kill friends including Naya….But he can’t. He must find a way to save her soul.
Resolution: With no time to spare, Nick performs a ritual to exchange his soul for Nayas thus destroying Koschei from the inside out. Naya is left alone on the mountain, determined to find Nick.

About me…you know, just doing what I do. Being outdoors gives me perspective. I don’t have to be anybody’s someone. I’m a speck but in the outdoors, it’s okay to be a speck. Even specks serve their purpose when you’re out here.
Why am I on this journey…I don’t really know, but I’ve cheated death so many times, I know how to get the best of anyone or anything that tries to suck the life out of me.
I’m up against…the need for money and my growing need to love a person who’s in major danger of getting her soul sucked out by not only her douche-bag fiance, but also a demon from another dimension.
Changes…even though I defy death, I don’t want to cause it either…for myself or anyone. In this case, I have to accept that real possibility…there may not be trick I can use to avoid it. I have to be vulnerable and risk a fate even worse than death.
I can meet a person where they are and speak their language to get what I want…It sounds manipulative, but really I’m helping them fulfill their dreams. I don’t know how to speak demon- plain and simple.
I’ve held back my resentment of losing my grandmother to alzheimer’s disease. And the loneliness I felt throughout my childhood. I never really learned how to be happy…the way normal kids do.
I hide…everything. Nobody needs to see my tender underbelly. I just keep smiling. In my life, if you show fear, you’re dead.
I think of…the universe, that if there’s another me out there in a different plane of existence..what he or she’s like. If maybe I could connect with them and find a higher purpose…specks that we are.
My side…this demon-fucker is doing two things…proving my hope of other dimensions but taking away what I love. I want Naya. She’s in danger of losing her soul. Figures this demon is a real thing…and its Russian. My grandmother was Russian.
If I succeed…ironically, no one will probably know…like the lost ark in the warehouse. But maybe I’ll get Naya and we can be two specks.

What I learned:
That it’s easy, especially in horror, to fall into typical characters. The macho guy who dies right away, the damsel in distress, the hapless hero. I need to stretch these characters more…I will be doing extensive interviews!!!
Protagonist: Nick- Runner 28 yrs old. He runs from an empty past. fills his life with weird objects and adventure. He’s an orphan who was raised by his grandmother who had dementia. What makes him special: He’s truly an empty vessel…ready to be filled with the right stuff.
Antagonist: Koschei – Predator ancient. An eternal demon relegated to the underworld. He preys upon souls, especially those of women. He can manifest in other thin, gaunt men acting as a father figure. What makes him special: His never ending hunger for domination over everything. His deviousness.
Love Interest: Naya- Ben’s fiancee. Bored beauty queen discovering that the life she wanted isn’t the life she needs. She has diminished her own value and intelligence in exchange for stability and money. What makes her special: She’s more than a pretty face.
Supporting Character: Ben. Douche bag leader of the adventurers who seeks to manipulate and bully the group into risky activities. He hovers over Naya. Believes he’s on a higher plane and destined for greatness. What makes him special: His perspective on the world…get the best of it before it gets the best of you.
Genre: Horror

What I learned:
You can get deep quickly. Find the reality in my fiction. That I’m usually walking a fine line between life and death with my characters and it’s nice to see a wider spectrum to their growth and path.
Nick’s internal journey takes him from being an eager, indifferent and disconnected user of others to an thinking, invested, intentional giver…someone willing to make a true sacrifice.
Nick’s external journey takes him from taking himself and others to the most breathtaking places on earth to the most frightening forbidden places.
Nick’s Old Ways
No plan for life…just go where the fun is
Hidden Superiority…he’s better at adventuring than any of the douche-bags he guides.
No Love…no desire to be responsible for another’s emotions…he’s busy enough taking care of himself.
