Finishing is everything. Messy or, well, messy! There’s plenty of time to fix things and drop things later.

Today I Celebrate
I finished my very rough draft of Memory Alpha. It’s 103 pages long and as crappy as heck, but I couldn’t be happier. My resolution scene turned into something even better than I imagined. My story is about redemption, and wow, was I redeemed.
I pitched an arc of my supporting character to one of my country club members—she’s a big fan. When I got to the last scene, she got goosebumps and had that look of surprise. Then she smiled real big and complimented me, saying I was clever. I’ll take it!
Now, I’m going to print this beast and have a laugh. For my first read, I’m going to tie my hands and be a hundred miles from my red pen. I just want to see what I gave birth to. I know it’ll be all over the place, but that’s what we’ve been told throughout this module. I totally had fun.

What I Learned
I can see the finish line. It’s messy now, but I know it will get better with each new draft. I look forward to the process.

As I move forward with Act 4, I can see some loose ends to tie up, but it’s like developing a new housing tract. In this draft, I’m numbering the houses. I know where the houses will be built and their addresses. The street still needs paving, and the sidewalks need to be laid. But I know the neighborhood, and it’s going to be great when it’s finished.
I’ve written some rough shout-outs, and some of the bad guys have been eliminated, bringing my protagonist closer to his goal of taking down the head of the syndicate. My last therapy session scene was preachy, but my lead’s addiction arc is complete, just as I wrote in my outline. The end is near, and I’m really getting excited. I still haven’t read a word.

What I learned in this lesson, the light is at the end of the tunnel. The path to the end is near whether I could see it or not. I know where the light is, and I followed my nose.

Starting my Act 4 I had a lot of momentum going in. My Act 3 led me to this point and despite all the flaws, I felt confident to keep trusting my outline and bang out the opening Act 4 scenes. I’ve set up the team for the ultimate show down. I know I’ll be rewriting these scenes with more power and thrill. For now, they move me forward and there’s much room for improvement. I love this method of writing. I’m getting it out of my head, and that feels great. I guess I’m really having fun!

What I learned in this lesson, Einstein’s quote works on so many levels. When applied to writing, it hits the mark, especially with this new method of writing.

My process was to close out Act 3 and get ready for the final push. So, I’ve written interesting scenes where my lead is down the rabbit hole, with his investigation, and his addiction. His team has problems, and he’s a hot mess. His adversary has painted him in a corner. Now that’s some forward movement, because yesterday, he wasn’t in such peril.

My Process

My writing is progressing at a pace that makes me happy. I'm producing new scenes; some have legs but can’t quite run yet, while others are only crawling. Forward I go.

Interestingly, I haven't read anything I've written yet. This feels strange to me. I may do some light spell-checking, but I'm not reading—just following and trusting my outline. I understand the idea of skipping around if I get stuck, but so far, I'm inspired by the speed rules and haven't felt the need to skip over anything I haven't fully thought through. I'll figure it out later. For now, I'm driven by forward momentum, and I'm digging that.

What I learned in this lesson, Lady Gaga’s quote is spot on. There are so many haters out there and I’m my worst critic. I like the idea of writing without criticism.

My process is coming along nicely. There are so many layers to my story and at this point, the beginning of Act 3, peeling them back to get to the spine of the story by problem solving and creating new obstacles to hurdle has been an interesting ride. My addiction story line has gone from bad to worse – The search for Alpha just became heated. These new scenes are interesting but so many details to unravel in subsequent drafts. Just getting it out of my head and on paper is an accomplishment in itself. Celebrate!

What I learned in this lesson, Jodi Pecoult’s quote really resonated with me. I’m a film editor and I know that having choices and putting the best choice on the screen is the goal but you have to experiment with takes to get there. I find that this method of speed writing has the same elements.

With Memory Alpha, I’m out of my normal element. Out of my 98 projects, this is the only police procedural, a genre I love to watch but haven’t really thought about much to write. This project has been with me for 33 years and has never left my brain so when AI picked the two projects in pre-class, this one and a Christmas story – I really didn’t want to do the Christmas story at this time despite being really connected to it. Memory Alpha was inspired by one of my favorite Sci-fi’s and I wanted to go down this road. The scenes I’ve been writing deal a lot with my antagonist who I’m still massaging as a character. I’m also writing a sub-plot about addiction and I’m also trying to figure out some details. By speed writing, I know I’ll be able to come back to these scenes and really have the opportunity to pick another take so-to-speak and elevate them in the next few drafts. At this point, they are out of my head and on paper. They exist, so I’ll celebrate that!

What I learned in this lesson, was writing at a lightning speed didn’t really hinder my creative flow but enhanced it. My mind was swirling with ideas. I love Margaret Atwood, and her quote was powerful.

My process for the next several scenes was really exciting. I had a couple really fun scenes to write, an autopsy scene and an interview of my key witness. I had a ton of fun putting these scenes together. Because my film is set thirty-three years in the future – not too far off, my thoughts were to make it as realistic as possible and have futuristic gadgets abound without being mediocre or cookie-cutter sci-fi tech. Even at light speed those details were fully flushed – sure they will become elevated with the next three rewrites, but at thirty percent, I’m really happy. No wordsmithing here!

What I learned this lesson was because I’m allowing myself all this creative freedom, I’m having a blast. I’ve actually have implanted several homage Easter eggs from a few of my favorite Sci-Fi’s over my lifetime.

The process is enchanting and allowing me to free my mind. I especially like the quote to the lesson – It was very inspiring. I will no longer complain that my first drafts are crap, because they are and that’s okay. I’m fine with that now. I guess I’m guilty of perfectionism. It’s hard to escape, but as this draft shits out, I hope to become better at writing creative, crappy first drafts. lol

What I learned in this lesson, I’ve reached the end of Act one faster than I ever thought possible.

My process has improved from yesterday. Now when I open my script, I know in my mind, I’ll finish a few scenes in a matter of a few hours instead of a day or two. This process is refreshing and I love the way my Act ended fully opening the door to Act Two and my exciting futuristic universe I’ve created for my lead’s journey. He’s got a very tough case to crack and so many obstacles in his way. He needs a strong team. I can’t wait to give birth to them.

What I learned in this lesson is this new method of writing, "quick writing”, really moves the process along at a pace I’ve never encountered. It’s been quite freeing allowing me to become a creative force for my story. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, now I’m a fan.

My thought process for these scenes was to get them out as quickly as possible. Having the knowledge to build a scene is helpful and so working my WIM + AI outline, made it really easy to punch out a few more scenes. My Act 1 has turned into something I’m anxious to rewrite – making my first ten pages the strongest I can possibly write.

What I learned in this lesson, its full speed ahead, and I mean speed. I’m quickly moving toward my inciting incident with lightning speed. Since my concept is a sci-fi – I used AI to help me develop some of the high tech or modify and organize my thoughts on the tech I developed. I also had AI do hypotheticals of the tech imagined. It was helpful to get some large furniture moved in. So now plopping in my outline and speed writing with those in place, I’ve been able to keep the pace lively and fun. I am thinking about my story every day and look forward to writing a new scene or two daily. Did I mention I’m having fun? Yup, I am.

What I learned in this lesson, the beginning of a new process; “High Speed Writing”, I allowed my creative juices to flow without being encumbered by dotting “I’s and crossing t’s”. It was a refreshing approach and one I’ll adapt for all my future writing projects. In this scene, I introduced my protagonist, and drew upon a Pro Series lesson of character description. Having completed the actor attractors for my lead, I incorporated the PS lesson with those and now, I’m happy to say, my lead jumps off the page without spending hours thinking who this person is. Now they have a voice. – at least at a 30% level and I couldn’t be more delighted. I look forward advancing my outline to script with lightning speed. Here I go!

In this lesson, I was happy to experience my first breakthrough. When we went into the additional week off for polishing our outlines, I was one of five out of forty-five that raised hands to begin module 5, so with several exchanges of my outline, I felt confident that I didn’t need any more time to refine so I went ahead and began to write my first scene of my concept which first entered my brain a wee thirty-two years ago while visiting a friend on set in downtown Los Angeles. I knew it was going to be a complicated opening title scene, so I broke out my trusty DR FORMATT TELLS ALL to get a sense of the process.
I have enjoyed the process of creating the most detailed outline I’ve ever written in all my years of writing. I’m grateful to learn this new process. When I wrote my first scene, I was incredibly proud to get that out of my head where it has lived for so long. When I read back my scene, even a 30% it looked good and quite visual. I’m pleased with my work, and I celebrated its existence.
