Robert and Trent go to their desks and get busy working on their assignments. Mrs. Mitchell comes back and sees them concentrating on their computers.
Mrs. Mitchell
Hi guys, how’s it going. Got anything ready for me to look over from the list I gave each of you?
TRENT
Hello Mrs. Mitchell, yes, I do have it ready, before I give it to you I want your opinion about this method that I thought could save the company’s time.
MRS MITCHELL
Sure, let me see what you’ve done.
TRENT
Here’s all the names you gave me. I put them in three separate category lists:
All the ones that had all the same general information requests, all the ones that had the same specific question, and those that had an individual question. I wrote a standard, personalized note that suits them all.
MRS. MITCHELL
Good thinking! Now, email them to me while I go see what Robert has ready for me.
Mrs. Mitchell heads over to the other desk, where Robert is concentrating on the screen.
MRS MITCHELL
Hi Robert, how it going?
ROBERT
Fine, I’m not quite finished yet, but will be done in a few minutes. If you’d like to take a look at what I’ve done thus far I can show you what I’ve been doing.
MRS. MITCHELL
That’s okay, take your time. I’ll look over what Trent just emailed me and get back to you.
Mrs. Mitchell goes to her desk and checks her computer for Trent’s emailed information. She is very impressed with the efficiency of the concept that Trent created for compiling the emails into groups.
MRS MITCHELL
Trent, I liked your idea of creating the group information lists. I think it will save time, and I’ve just sent it to Mr. Bellville,
ROBERT
Mrs. Mitchell, I’ve finished the listings and it’s ready for your review.
MRS. MITCHELL
Okay, that’s good. I already sent Trent’s off just now, so I’ll take a quick look at yours and get it off too.
Just then, Mrs. Mitchell’s phone rings. It’s Mr. Bellville. He likes Trent’s work and wants to see Robert’s emails too.
MRS MITCHELL
Yes Mr. Bellville, Robert just completed his too, but I haven’t reviewed them yet.
MR. BELLVILLE
Just sent them up, I’ll take a look now before I have to leave for a meeting this afternoon.
Mrs. Mitchell tells Robert to send her his emails, and she forwards them to Mr. Bellville.
Afterwards, she decides to take a little time to go over the email Robert sent and is shocked to discover the obvious similarities in the two separate emails.
MRS. MITCHELL (sharply)
Robert and Trent, please come to my office immediately.
ROBERT
Is everything okay? I hope it wasn’t completed too late. I’m sorry I took so long but I thought we still had some time left.
TRENT
Did Mr. Bellville not like the way I did it?
MRS. MITCHELL
I’m sure he liked it , but NOT the same one twice SO which one of you copied it? Own up now.
TRENT
I gave you mine first, before Robert even finished his. I couldn’t copy something that wasn’t written yet.
ROBERT
Every word I wrote is my own. I stayed at my desk all morning, except when I went to the break room for a cup of coffee for myself and Trent. If anyone copied anything, it wasn’t me.
MRS MITCHELL
Robert, then how do you explain how Trent wrote the same sentence as you at the ending, and gave it to me before you finished writing it?
ROBERT
But I HAD finished it, except for a few spellings I wanted to correct, even before I went for the coffee. Then Trent suggested we take a break. So we left. Then Trent had to go to the restroom, so I got our coffee.
MRS. MITCHELL
Is that right Trent? When did you go to the restroom?
TRENT
I don’t remember exactly, but I went there first and then to the break room.
ROBERT
Yes, you came but you took ages, and your coffee was cold by the time you got there.
MRS. MITCHELL
Okay you two. I know how to settle this right here and now.
Mrs. Mitchell reaches for her desk phone and calls the front desk.
MRS. MITCHELL
Hi Tracy, It’s Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Bellville’s secretary. Can you do me a favor and ask James, the security chief to give me a call. It’s not a big deal, just a question I have for him about the security cameras in my area of the building this morning. Thanks so much. Bye.
James calls Mrs. Mitchell
MRS. MITCHELL
Hi James, thanks for the quick call back. As I said, it not a big deal, just checking on anyone who was in my area between the rest room, the break room, and the area around my desk and the two interns’ desks between 11am and noon today. If you have any footage, an you give me a copy?
JAMES
Sure, it’s so recent that won’t be a problem. I’ll send it right over. Just keep me posted on anything that is a security issue.
MRS MITCHELL
Thanks James, I owe you another one of my apple pies!!
MRS. MITCHELL
Robert and James, right now I am giving you both one last chance to explain the duplicate information you gave me. Security is bringing a video of the area from the time you both left your desks to go to the break room, up until I returned.
TRENT
So now, we’re on trial right here in this room? I don’t have to take this kind of abuse from anyone. I’m outa here!
MRS MITCHELL
Well, I guess that’s answer enough for me. Robert, I think you can also take the rest of the day off. This has been a tough enough day for you. I’ll give Mr. Bellville a call, I’m sure he’ll be happy that to hear this is all cleared up. Tomorrow we’ll go over everything.
ROBERT
Thank you Mrs. Mitchell! I appreciate that. I don’t know how he copied my stuff, but I’m glad it’s over with.
Robert heads to the parking lot and goes to his car. Waiting in the back seat is Trent.
TRENT
Hi Mr. Big Shot, I figured you’d be going home early, so I waited to give you my last regards.
Trent reaches over with a leather belt to hit Robert in the face. Robert catches hold of the belt and gives Trent a taste of his own medicine. Then he gets out of the car, waits for Trent to come at him again, and gives him another whack.
ROBERT
Guess another thing you didn’t know about me is that I was trained in Judo by my father who was a champion. If you ever come near me again, I’ll press charges on all counts . Anything unusual happens to me, you will be the first one they question. And by the way, the security camera watches everything out here too!
-
Once Robert has the list of emails he’s been assigned, he gets to work, first compiling a numbered list and description of each service the company offers, to use in reply to the sender in each category. Then he checks out each email, making notes of the sender’s topics of interest that needs a response.
Meanwhile, Trent is meticulously preparing each email as he reads it, one at a time, and has a bunch ready to send once they get the okay from Mrs. Mitchell.
TRENT
Hey Robert, how’s it going for you, how many emails have you got ready?
ROBERT
OH, none yet, I’ve just made a numbered list of the company’s services. I’m making a list of each customer’s interests, so I can send info quickly to all of them once I’ve completed the list.
TRENT
Gosh, I’m ready for a break. Wanna stop and get a cup of coffee?
ROBERT
Sure, there’s always a pot on in the break room.
TRENT
I have to make a pit stop first.
ROBERT
Okay, I’ll see you at the break room.
Trent starts towards the restrooms, but quickly turns back to their desks, grabs his
Flash drive and copies and uploads all Robert’s files to it, then hurries to the break room.ROBERT
I poured you a cup of coffee, but it’s probably cold by now.
TRENT
Thanks. No worries, I can refresh it, then we oughta head back before Mrs Mitchell comes by.
ROBERT
Yes I still have to complete reviewing the emails and then writing responses. How far have you got to go?
TRENT
Just about got them in the right order. I am working on a way to speed it all up. I’ll show you after Mrs Mitchell has a look at them first, in case she wants any changes.
-
Robert & Trent are assigned desks next to each other to work with Mrs.Mitchell, the secretary in charge of Customer Services, including incoming responding to enquiries about company services and other public email communications.
MRS MITCHELL
Robert & Trent, Here’s what I want each of you to do today – prepare responses for the emails received on your desk computers, asking for a list of our services, but don’t reply to them until I have a chance to review your work. My boss, Mr. Bellville, wants a copy of them all later.
ROBERT
Sounds good. I will get right on it.
TRENT
Me too. I know this is an important part of the business for Mr. Belville.
-
Robert & Trent are among several college students in their last year majoring in IT who are interns at a nearby international company.
Trent overhears the company bigshot saying he plans to hire the best one of the interns after they graduate and right now, he has his eye on Robert.
Trent really wants that job but knows Robert is the obvious choice – unless he can screw things up for him – and make himself look good.

Title: Roxy the Recycling Robin and the Mystery of the Missing Trees”
Winifred Meiser:What I’ve learned that is improving my writing is to give the characters more chances to say what they are thinking.
Part One: 1. Longline for Roxy script scene: Scene 8: Roxy Robin learns the answer to the “Secret of the Circle of Arrows” and tries to share it with the children in the park.
2 The Essence of the scene shows how a lack of information can lead to misunderstandings about a specific topic.
3 The youngest child does understand but the others don’t listen.
4 ROXY ROBIN
Kids, wait, please don’t throw so much in the trash. All your paper plates, gift wrappings, and cardboard boxes are made from the trees that were once our homes with nests for food and shelter for me and my forest friends.VICKY
Hey little birdie, look around – there’s PLENTY more trees. You can just fly to another tree.ROXY ROBIN
Some day, when there are no trees left in the forest to seed new trees, there will be no more place for us – and no more paper for your school books and gift wrappings.
Friend #1
Oh COME ON! There are plenty of places that sell paper. They even make books for our school library. There are all kinds of cute new stuff in the stores too. and they have NEVER run out of paper for homework.( VICKY AND FRIENDS all laugh)
ROXY ROBIN
But our forest is disappearing, your dumps are getting full, and the rivers and oceans are becoming polluted with all the plastic that makes its way there so even the fish can hardly swim there.
Friend #2
We can always swim in the pool instead of the river, and the beach is far from me anyway.Friend #3
What’s all the fuss over a few bits of trash that nobody can use anyway, Nobody wants it. There’s nowhere else we could put it, and it’s better than being a litterbug.( VICKY AND FRIENDS all laugh again)
( ROXY turns away dejectedly, goes back to the NORTH WIND)
ROXY These children don’t understand ANYTHING about the problem. Oh! there are so many people . . . and I am just a young Robin – how can I make a difference in such a big world? -
Screenwriting U. #3
What I learned from this is that observing and remembering other people and animals’ unique personality quirks – the good, the bad, and everything in between can increase your understanding of people, and a range of characters to draw from when needed
-
Screenwriting U Lesson #3
Person 1: 4 core traits: Knowledgeable, Social, insincere, cunning.
Shares knowledge, friendly when it suits, shortchanges some people and ignores othersPerson 2: 4 core traits: Loyal, helpful, loner, undependable.
Can be depended upon in a pinch, hard-working, can be helpful, but keeps to themselves.Person 3: 4 core traits: Selectively Social, Supportive, Manipulative, Dominating.
Snobbish in social status groupings, Supportive of close family needs.Note: Core Traits observed in recent past interactions.

Winifred Meiser Puts Essence to Work. What I learned is: The importance of creating strong, short, and pertinent dialogue.
Script: I chose “Roxy the Recycling Robin & the Mystery of the Missing Trees”
Scene 1 A Location: Grandmother’s cozy living room.
Logline: Grandma greets her granddaughter Vicky & her friends, Kathy, Helen, Peter & Martin.
GRANDMA: Hello children. I’m so glad you’re all here for our story-time today,
Essence I discovered: It needed more characters and more interaction by People characters and Forest Creatures characters.
Scene 1 B Location: Grandma’s cozy living room.
New Logline: Several children come rushing into the room. Grandma warmly greets her grandchildren Vicky & George, exchanges hugs with them, and welcomes their four friends, Kathy, Helen, Peter & Martin.
GRANDMA (cheerfully) Hello children. I’m so glad you’re all here for our story-time today, about how all the forest animals and birds were worried about their trees disappearing, and Roxy, a brave little red Robin, who wanted to help her friends.
Scene 2 A. Location: Grandma’s cozy living room
Logline: GRANDMA: Everyone comfy? Then let’s begin. Once upon a time, a great forest covered the earth. Colorful birds built cozy nests in the tall trees, and forest creatures roamed the woods and the valley below, where a clear river flowed to the sea.
GRANDMA (shows the children the storybook’s picture)
Essence I’ve discovered: Emphasize the beauty and value of the forest, river, nature & all the creatures who live there. Give children a chance to comment.
Scene 2 B Location: Grandma’s cozy living room
New Logline: GRANDMA: Everyone comfy? Then let’s begin. Once upon a time, a great forest covered the earth. Colorful birds built cozy nests in the tall trees, and forest creatures roamed the woods and the valley below, where a clear, curving river flowed to the sea.
GRANDMA (shows the children the storybook’s picture)
VICKY Grandma, I like seeing the pictures in books, and I like hearing you read the words too. That way, I know how to pronounce them when I read to the little kids next door. GRANDMA: (smiles) That’s great Vicky dear, and I’m sure those children enjoy it too.
GEORGE Grandma what I like most is hearing you reading the stories to us.
GRANDMA Thank you George, and I like telling them (pauses) and now, on with the story. But, that was once upon a time . . . Now, many of the trees have disappeared and the river is muddied.
Scene 3 A Location: Deep in the Forest near the Ancient Oak Tree
Logline: BENNY THE BROWN BEAR: Fewer trees mean less food and shelter for animals and birds. MRS. DOVE (sadly) And less baby birds in springtime. She sings a soft lament to a silent spring. ROXY ROBIN (concerned) Perhaps some of the other forest creatures know something. Let’s ask them.
Essence I’ve discovered: Explaining how they could arrange to be in the same place and time to meet and discuss the problem.
Scene 3B Deep in the Forest near the Ancient Oak Tree.
New Logline: BENNY THE BROWN BEAR: We need the gathering to be held at a time and place that everyone knows! Where in the Forest could that be? The FOREST CREATURES know the forest well, but not how to get everyone together at the same time and place. Everyone looks all around and at each other, then shrugs helplessly. ROXY the ROBIN: We all know when the moon is full, right? And EVERYBODY knows Lofty, the Ancient Oak Tree, he’s been here longer than any other living thing. So, let’s tell everyone that the morning after the next full moon, we will hold a gathering of the Forest Creatures, right here, underneath the Ancient Oak Tree’s branches. The FOREST CREATURES all cheer and nod in agreement.
THE NORTH WIND: Yes, let’s all spread the news about this important meeting.
Scene 4 A Location: Grandma’s cozy living room
Logline: GRANDMA: The day of the meeting dawned clear and bright as the forest creatures assembled. Each living thing in the forest – from butterflies to bears – was represented. The Ancient Oak dressed in his finest shades of green. His leaves – polished by the North Wind – glistened in the morning sun. Birds of every color of the rainbow crowded his branches. Even the Night Owl swooped in and made a RARE daytime appearance. The Forest Creatures chatter excitedly as they wait for the meeting to begin . . .
GRANDMA shares another picture from the storybook with the children.
Essence I’ve discovered: Describing pictures in a story book creates opportunities to share more details and interest in subject.
Scene 4 B Location: Grandma’s cozy living room
New Logline: GRANDMA shares another picture from the storybook with the children. KATHY & PETER (simultaneously): Wow! Look at how BIG that Owl’s wings are! GRANDMA (smiling)Yes, they are. It’s called a Great Horned Owl, and its’ wingspan can be up to five feet wide to helps it fly quietly and quickly when it goes hunting for dinner. And now, boys and girls, let’s find out what happens at the meeting in the Forest.
Scene 5 A Location: Deep in the Forest near the Ancient Oak Tree
Logline: BENNY THE BROWN BEAR: Welcome. Thank you for flying, crawling, leaping, . . . (hesitatingly) . . .slithering . . . and otherwise making your way here today. (pauses, looks around slowly) We need your help in solving a mystery. (serious tone). The trees, which provide our food and shelter, are disappearing. But . . . But . . . who could go? asked NADINE the REINDEER. We all have babies to feed. All the FOREST CREATURES murmur their concern but none can offer to help.
Essence I’ve discovered: A youthful character taking on a challenge where others reluctant, sparks interest in the outcome.
Scene 5 B. Location: Deep in the Forest near the Ancient Oak Tree
New Logline: AT RISE: The FOREST CREATURES, assemble around the LOFTY the ANCIENT OAK TREE. ANNA the BANANA.
A TREE sways gracefully beside NADINE the DEER, TRICIA the BUTTERFLY, PEARL the PARROT, TOM the TURTLE, GRACE THE SQUIRREL and their friend TONY the RABBIT. The Four Winds, North, S, E, and West gently breeze around the LOFTY, the Ancient Oak Tree. Everyone chatters noisily. Enter ROXY THE ROBIN and her friend, BENNY THE BROWN BEAR. He picks up a broken tree branch and walks over to the tree stump near Lofty, the Ancient Oak Tree. BENNY THE BROWN BEAR (taps on the stump with the branch, pauses for quiet) The FOREST CREATURES keep on chatting, happily greeting old friends.
BENNY THE BEAR (loudly) AHEEM! (coughs much louder AAAHEEMMMM! A hush falls over the FOREST CREATURES.
They all murmur concern, shake their heads, offer various reasons why they can’t go look for the missing trees. ROXY the little RED ROBIN steps up to LOFTY the Oak Tree’s trunk, spreads her wings. ROXY ROBIN (emphatically) I will go! I am nearly grown, and my eyes are VERY sharp. THE NORTH WIND It’s true. Roxy Robin may be small, but she is STRONG, SMART, and bold. Roxy is definitely the best one for the job. (The CREATURES OF THE FOREST nod in relief and agreement ) BENNY THE BROWN BEAR Very well Roxy. We are all counting on you to solve the mystery of the missing trees.
The CREATURES OF THE FOREST (In unison) Hurrah for Roxy Robin! NORTH WIND (Steps forward and stands by Roxy) I’ll go with you, Roxy, I’m strong and can lift you over mountains – higher than any bird has ever flown. Then you can search the whole world.
Everyone cheers.

Hello folks, My name is Winifred Meiser and I have written two scripts. I am the Writer/Executive Producer of a children’s environmental play/musical “Roxy the Recycling Robin And The Mystery of the Missing Trees” and the Founder/Director of the nonprofit children’s photography program “Seeing Our World – Through Children’s Eyes” conducted over the past 40 years throughout the USA and several countries including Armenia, Indonesia & England.
My goal is to write a short documentary about the program, its’ purpose (using basic photography) to teach children visual awareness and communication skills, and exhibiting their photos, to inspire them to see themselves as a positive part of their community. Exhibits are sometime exchanged and viewed digitally between participating communities and nations.
My hope is that the documentary, including instructions and requirements (such as none of the work is to be used in competition or for sale) can be viewed anywhere in the world, bringing us all a bit closer by seeing our world – through children’s eyes.
Best regards to all who give their work their all:-)
