Man you guys are kicking butt. I’m having trouble committing to outline scenes. It was easy when we were vague but now I’m shifting things here and there but they never seem good enough. I don’t want to get too far in with temp scenes that I just have to redo again. :/

Spike’s Character Journey Track
What I learned doing this assignment is creating characteristics for each of my people.
A: What is their Character Profile?
CHAD..
1- ROLE: Alpha Male.
2- Traits: Alpha make in his own little group. Not athletic but goes to gym so he bullies by pranking people for his IG channel. Uses the “It’s only a prank dude” to get out of getting his ass kicked.
3- Fears: Not being liked
4- Wants/Needs: To be Instagram famous
5- Likability / Rooting factors: Hardly any. Does have a moment here and there.
6- How they react under stress: Denies it till the end because he’s afraid someone will see hes scared.
7- Relationship with other characters: He tries to boss his friends around. They let him only because they fell sorry for him.
LOGAN..
1- Role: Chad’s best friend
2- Traits: Has little self esteem. Does anything Chad says.
3- Fears: Trypophobia ( Fear of Holes in Skin)
4- Wants/Needs: Wants to be like Chad.
5- Likability / Rooting factors: He tries so hard to be liked.
6- How they react under stress: Freaks out. Gets rashes.
7- Relationship with other characters: Chad only has him around because he does everything Chad says. The others feel sorry for him and try to lift his spirits.
KAREN..
1- Role: The “Karen” of the group.
2- Traits: Goes “Karen” on people for no reason. Thinks she is “Cute” when doing this.
3- Fears: She fears everything she doesn’t understand.
4- Wants/Needs: Needs to be the enforcer to things that are minor making her a “Karen”. Instagram famous.
5- Likability / Rooting factors: She has her moments of being nurturing toward Logan.
6- How they react under stress: Becomes a “Karen”
7- Relationship with other characters: She gets along with everyone but they do think shes a bit off the deep end. She feels she needs to take care of Logan.
KAMAL..
1- Role: Body guard to group.
2- Traits: Hes big but he is a puppy dog. Loves his smoke.
3- Fears: Cops. Dolls.
4- Wants/Needs: Wants to fit in.
5- Likability / Rooting factors: He’s personable, funny, hangs with these kids because his life at home is hard.
6- How they react under stress: Tries not to but fails.
7- Relationship with other characters: Everyone likes him but they use him to get out of sticky situations they get into from doing pranks on strangers. Deshon is his best friend.
DESHON..
1- Role: Kamal’s best friend. Voice of reason. Savior.
2- Traits: He steps back with Kamal when the others are doing thier pranks. He is level headed and always warns the group. Athletic. Smart. Snappy comebacks.
3- Fears: Kamal will get into something he can’t get out of hanging with the others.
4- Wants/Needs: Wants to get Kamal to hang with some other friends.
5- Likability / Rooting factors: He is really into his football and helps out wherever he can.
6- How they react under stress: Calculates the situation and comes up with a solution.
7- Relationship with other characters: Hes a third party in the group. Always getting into it with the others about what they do for IG.
VOODOO PRIESTESS..
Role: To wreak havoc on the group.
Traits: Woman of little words.
Fears: Other witches.
Wants/Needs: She wants to get back at the group for what they did.
Likability / Rooting factors: Not sure yet
How they react under stress: Combative.
Relationship with other characters: She terrorizes the group until they try to retaliate. Then she kills.
BRUHA LADY..
Role: To bring to light the “curse” on Chad. Help reverse and stop the visions.
Traits: Soft spoken, helpfull, can see things others can’t by choice.
Fears: Other witches
Wants/Needs : She wants to get Chad out of danger.
Likability / Rooting factors: Shes like a grand mother figure.
How they react under stress: Turns to magic to help.
Relationship with other characters: They all like her.
B. What is their Character Journey for this story?
CHAD
Character Intro: Chad is “THAT” guy who thinks hes the life of the party in his own little world. Fiends for Instagram likes.
Denial: If it’s not about him he seems to not care. Kicking over the little alter in front of his door is the first action of DENIAL.
Their reaction at first horror: Blows it off because he thinks Logan is a putz and a butt kisser.
Relation to group after first horror: Becomes condecending to them.
How they fight back: He kind of goes with what the group says
End Point: He winds up in a room in the maze with a minion. We hear all kinds of screams but did he die?
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? If he lives what does he come back as in the sequel.
LOGAN
Character Intro: He is the wanna-be. He hangs on to Chad’s every word and worships the ground he walks on. He even sleeps on his door step to make sure he goes to school with him in the mornings.
Denial: He doesn’t deny a thing. He experiences it first hand and knows he fucked.
Their reaction at first horror: His first encounter is the maggots he can see when he puts a light up to his hand. Not sure how to react at this point. Shows it to Karen.
Relation to group after first horror: He goes looking for help from the group right away.
How they fight back: Fighting back is the last thing on his mind.
End Point: His death might be the most gruesome. He suffered the longest since his mind was the most influenced.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? Seeing the maggots crawl up the priestess’ legs is the first physical sign it’s her doing this.
KAREN
Character Intro: She is your typical teen taking a million selfies of herself but also gets triggered on the most minute causes. She reacts without thinking. She loves her own hair.
Denial: She gets high trying to forget about what she saw.
Their reaction at first horror: Freaks out when her selfies have teeth sticking out of her face.
Relation to group after first horror: She is getting short tempered with them.
How they fight back: She comes up with the idea to find the Bruha lady.
End Point: She dies a terrible death not figured out yet.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? I have to figure out how she dies.
KAMAL
Character Intro: Hes the comic relief. Big guy who takes life easy. Not much bothers him except Karen gets on his nerves.
Denial: Jumps when he first sees the IG post but laughs and doesn’t believe its real. FAKE NEWS!
Their reaction at first horror: He looks around to see if anyone saw him jump or if they see the maggots on the ground. Laughs it off. “Weed got me buggin” he says as he goes back to what he was doing.
Relation to group after first horror: He does mention this to Deshon only.
How they fight back: He has all these trinkets he found online from some witchcraft site. He thinks they will work against the Priestess
End Point: He lives because he is the least influenced by the witchcraft.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? It’s good to have a friend who has an aunt who is a witch.
DESHON
Character Intro: Football player for the school. Popular but does hang with this ragtag group of nerds only because his friend Kamal does. Can’t stand Chad.
Denial: He kind of knows of these things so he take it in as it happens.
Their reaction at first horror: He doesn’t really have anything happen as of now.
Relation to group after first horror: He warns them they are messing with things they should leave alone.
How they fight back: He goes to see his aunt who knows about this stuff.
End Point: He is the one with the real power to help reject the spells and witchcraft aimed at them.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? His recovery leaves it open to part 2.

Spike’s Monster Reveal Track
What I learned doing this assignment is fleshing out what my monster is capable of and how to keep interest in her. Did I accomplish this? Possibly.
A. Who is your monster and what is their terror?
My monster is a voodoo priestess who is getting revenge on some kids who went too far.
Powers: Able to infiltrate their dreams and reality with visions. Can make someone’s life beautiful or wish they never were alive.
Limitations: Needs to have a personal item from the client or victim.
Weaknesses: Can be countered by other witchcrafts including voodoo.
Plan/Purpose/Appetite: At first the plan is to make their life miserable but then they get a Bruha to counter her spells and that does not sit well with the priestess.
ACT 1:
Connect with Characters: Typical high school kids doing teenage stuff. It’s all about the likes on IG.
Horror Situation: After pranking old lady in botanica things start to happen. They bump into minion on way out.
Monster Reveal: She seems to be a harmless old lady in a store.
Atmosphere of evil established: Logan has first of the visions in class. Chad finds weird alter in front of his door. He kicks it out of the way. Old Bruha senses he’s been marked.
Monster Reveal: Alter in front of door. The Bruha tries to give Chad info on what is happening.
Reaction: Chad thinks the old Bruha is a crazy old lady.
Spooky Situation: While editing the prank footage they see that most of it didn’t record but you can hear chanting in the background. In the static of the footage they notice symbols that you can barely see. Pissed off there was no footage Chad storms out. The others stay behind and play the chanting again. Deshon mentions that they should turn that off. As the chanting finishes, flies start to land on things.
Monster Reveal: Within the static the old lady’s face through the symbols.
Demand: They wonder what happened to recording.
Denial of Horror: They blow the visions off. Chad blows off Old Bruha.
Safety taken away: Dreams are effected. They can’t get sleep.
Horror Situation: Logan notices if he holds flashlight up to his hand he can see maggots crawling around inside of it. Shows it to Karen.
Reaction: They try to show it to other people but they don’t see it.
Horror Situation: Kamal is smoking weed with his friends.As he is checking IG he sees the minion with a life-size, life-like voodoo doll of Kamal on one of the posts. He puts a pin into the hand of the doll and Kamal drops his phone. When he picks it up there are maggots underneath it. No one else sees them.
Reaction: Kamal mentions this to Deshon.
Horror Situation: Karen is in mirror taking selfies with her cat and every time she takes on the picture comes out with a tooth sticking out of her face. She goes to take another but the minion shows up in the pic behind her. She freaks out and leaves.
Horror Situation: Chad is in the gym working out and after he does weights he goes to mirror to flex. The veins in his arms start to move around like they are worms. He tried to touch them but when he does his hand curles the opposite way. When he tries to point down his finger goes up.
ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN
Internal Conflict in the group/ Character refuses to take action: Group gets together and talk about what they saw. Each is a little shaken up except Chad. He mentions the Bruha lady not knowing she is a Bruha. They ask if he has seen her again and maybe she can help. He thinks this is a stupid idea.
Reaction: The group starts to reject Chad.
Horror Situation: Logan is eating dinner with his folks. His mom puts the plate down in front of him and he says “he can’t eat this”. His mom asks why and he says “there are fucking bugs in it” and picks it up and shoves in her face. As he’s holding the plate up to her his arm starts to grow these things that look like barnecles but skin like. One of the barnecles start to throb and splits open and a baby frog crawls out. He drops the plate and more frogs start to hatch out of his arms. He runs to bathroom with razor but his arms are normal again.
Reaction: Calls Kamal to get some weed. He also calls Karen.
Connect with Characters: Logan, Kamal, Deshon, and Karen share their getting high stories while smoking weed in the park.
Spooky Situation: Kamal and Deshon are driving home and they notice a smell coming from the back of car. They open trunk to find some kind of shrine. Deshon takes pics. After tossing everything they close trunk the old Bruha is there giving them a scare.
Reaction: They both jump in car and speed off. Deshon go sees his aunt.
Horror Situation: Karen is going through IG and she comes across the minion. He holds a cat doll but there are real bones and blood on it. He wraps a string around its neck and pulls. She hears her cat screaming from other room. She finds it caught up in the window blinds dead.
Monster Reveal: The minion shows up again. This time there is death.
Demand: Karen is starting to figure things out.
Reaction: She takes the cat down and looks through the IG again for the minion.
Horror Situation: Chad is on his phone going through filters. The one with the spiders come up and when he opens his mouth spiders crawl out. He laughs and does it again. This time real spiders crawl out of his mouth and out of phone all over his hands. He starts to scream but his mouth is stuck shut with spider webs.
Reaction: Chad runs to bathroom and can see eyes between the webs in his mouth.
ACT 3:
Try to Solve it: Chad and Logan look for old Bruha lady. They find her.
Reaction: The group goes to Bruha lady’s house. She does some Bruha stuff. This interferes with the voodoo priestess’ spell. All seems to be well after.
Monster Reveal: Priestess get angry and counters back with revenge on the Bruha.
Demand: A small battle between the crafts ensues.
Horror Situation: Karen finds Bruha lady dead in her house.
Reaction: Call group over to house. They call the cops but nothing gets done. They decide to go back to store and confront the priestess armed with stuff they got off some voodoo site online. Deshon speaks with his aunt again and is warned again. She gives him a trinket for protection and a black/UV light.
Horror Situation: When they get to the botanica the old lady is nowhere to be found. When they go into the back they find a door that leads to a stairway. They venture down the stairs in the back of the Botanica into the maze. Each person gets lost and find their worst nightmares.
Monster Reveal: Priestess’ evil maze where horrors await around every corner.
Demand: They continue in this maze with hopes they will run into the priestess and set things straight.
Fight to the death/Hysteria:
Chad and Logan are lost together. Chad turns a corner and the minion is there naked with white paint spells all over him. Logan cowards around the corner hearing everything, he just lays there crying as the sounds of torture echo out. Fingers start to come out of ground around him so he gets up and runs.
Karen’s hair gets caught in something making her lag behind. When she gets free she can’t find anyone until she hears the wimpering of a puppy. She follows the sound into an opening that has a gruesome scene.
Thrilling escape from death:
Kamal and Deshon hear Karen calling for them so they stop and turn around. When they turn back around Chad and Logan are gone. They both decide to get out of there and look for the stairs. Even though they are back-tracking they can’t find the exit. They can still hear Karen calling for them. They follow the voice. Deshon turns on the UV light and the walls illuminate with spells written all over them. In the darkness they see something glowing from the UV light. It morfs into a weird human-like creature and gives chase. When they turn to run their feet sink into the mud. They are scrambling over each other to get away but the creature is apon them. Deshon pulls out the amulet his aunt gave him which glows in the UV light and dispurses the creature just as it jumps to attack. The ground is solid again and they take off running.
Death returns:
Logan is running for his life in the maze and bumps into Kamal and Deshon. When the UV light hits him we can see what looks like maggots crawling under his skin. We can hear a muffled cicada sound. He is scratching intensely at this point. He tells them what happened and they look down the maze and can see a maggot trail so they follow it. It leads them into the alter room.
There sits the priestess in a throne like chair with cobwebs all over her seemingly in a trance eyes glazed over solid grey. Chad is being tortured by another minion. The cicada sound gets louder and louder and not so muffled anymore. Logan drops to the ground and the fingers come out again and grab him holding him down. Maggots spew out of him from everywhere until there is nothing left but bones covered in a gel like substance. The maggots crawl up the priestess’s legs. More stuff happens. Deshon’s aunt appears just when there is no hope and saves the day.
Resolution:
Kamal and Deshon are recovering somewhere. Deshon’s aunt is there tending to their wounds. She notices flies landing on Kamal but he doesn’t. She starts to pull out an amulet. Fade to black.

What I learned doing this assignment is making sure I work out the timeline. I had to change up the story a bit from this.
Order characters die in:
Death 1: Karen’s Cat
Why: To scare Karen
How: Minion has voodoo doll of cat. Puts string around it’s neck and pulls. Cat dies tangled in the curtain pull string.
Death 2: Old Bruha lady
Why: She chose to try to counter the actions of the voodoo priestess with her own magic.
How: She is with a client doing some ritual for her and it backfires. Client becomes possesed in a way and kills Bruha lady.
Death 3: Chad
Why: He gets lost with Logan in maze. They find a room with a minion who kills Chad
How: We never see it. We just hear it from Logans POV.
Death 4: Logan
Why: He gets lost in maze with Chad
How: Maggots burst out of his skin leaving bones and skin behind
Death 5: Karen
Why: She falls behind in maze
How: Her hair keep growing to the point its getting caught on everything in the maze. The maze has so much hair in it, it starts to look like spider webs. Eyes appear as spider legs start to poke out of hair. She gets killed by a spider that looks like a minion.

Spike’s Horror Plot
What I learned doing this assignment is breaking down the plot points which helped me structure with bullet points what I want to see happen with a loose pacing and gives me a chance to see the ending. I would have never done this and would have just tried to write full scenes which is what always slowed me down. Plus when writing full scenes I get caught up in “is it good enough” when you shouldn’t be thinking about that at this point.
ACT 1:
Atmosphere of evil:
Spooky botanica with old woman placing a watch in a glass cabinet that holds other personal type items like rings, lockets, watches, and other things. She goes to the back that leads to a door that opens to a dark descending stairway.
Connect with characters:
They do friend stuff together as kids do. Typical jokes. Small pranks here and there.
The characters are warned:
Deshon gets bad feelings about the lady and tells Kamal about an aunt he has.
Denial of Horror:
Chad blows off old spanish woman who says he has been marked by a priestess.
Karen mentions seeing things like flies gathered in her window alive and then they all die.
Logan mentions he has been dreaming of bugs digging into his skin.
Kamal mentions he feels something touch him at night.
Deshon doesn’t see or feel anything since he backed out of prank last second.
They all shrug it off for now until things get worse.
Safety taken away:
No matter where they go something happens to them.
Karen is at school and she sees herself on fire in the mirror with the priestess in the background.
Chad feels like everyone is staring at him no matter where he goes.
Logan can’t stop scratching himself. Skin starting to look like a wood type substance.
Kamal sees bugs in his food.
Deshon speaks with aunt and is warned he needs to stay away from his friends.
Monster – The nature of the beast:
The old priestess sends out a minion to gather items from each of the pranksters in order to cast evil spells on them.
She has a maze under the Botanica that leads to a voodoo alter.
ACT 2:
Isolated/Trapped/Abducted… One of us is killed:
The old spanish Bruha convinces Chad he is marked and tries to help him with her spells. The next day she turns up dead.
Deshon speaks with his aunt again and is warned again. She gives him a trinket for protection and a black/UV light.
Full pursuit by the killer/Terrorized:
The pranksters figure out what is going on and decide to do something about it so they go see the priestess. They bring stuff for protection they read about on a site. Deshon decides to go with them.
They venture down the stairs in the back of the Botanica into the maze. Each person gets lost and find their worst nightmares.

Spike’s Characters for Horror.
What I learned doing this assignment is having a diverse group and thinking about how to incorporate todays social influencers we love to hate in the mix.
Survivors and Victims.
Concept:
Influencers who prank random people go too far and prank the wrong person.
Group:
Thrill Seekers/Instagram Influencers
Dying Pattern:
Each person from the group dies a gruesome death brought on by Haitian witchcraft.
No one else can see the suffering before the death.
Identity of characters:
Chad, leader of the group, asshole, forces friends to cross the lines or morality.
Logan, ball hugger of Chad, tried to be like him in every way but is really scared shitless.
Karen, complainer of the group, gets out of hand when the pranked get mad at them.
Kamal, the kid they bring for security because hes big but they don’t really like him.
Deshon, Kamal’s best friend, the voice of reason.

Spike’s Terrifying Monster
What I learned doing this assignment is how deep this rabbit hole can go. While researching I found there are many different ideas on witchcraft. It’s also a little scary because I have been told I don’t want to mess with this when asking if anyone knew anyone who practices. I want to be as accurate as possible without going too far into the religion. The possible deviation gives me the reason for making up my own ideas on what can happen.
Lesson 2: Crafting your monster.
1: My “monster” is or seems to be, an old Haitian woman Voodoo priestess. I’ve played around with the idea everything that happens wasn’t under her control.
2:
Their Terror: She has the ability to make your life miserable through unseen “magic”.
Their Mystery: You won’t know who is causing all the kaos and death around you.
Their Fear Provoking Appearance: Her appearance seems somewhat normal for a priestess but she can conjure up your worst nightmares that seem to follow you into reality.
Their Rules: She must possess a personal item, lock of hair, or physical contact with/of victim.
Their Mythology: Passed down from many generations, the power of this religion is still strong if not stronger than when it was conceived. Has there been a deviation that no one knows about yet?

Assignment 1. John Carpenter’s “The Thing”
Still to this day this movie kicks ass.
This movie hit all the bullet points listed but I am having trouble finding the moral statement.
My guess is kill the alien at all costs knowing they will die also so it can’t make it to civilization.
My concept I was working on had to change after I listened to the audio clip you guys put up because it would be an expensive movie or series to make. I’m still thinking up another idea. I hope I can catch up in the next day or two.
NEW CONCEPT:
Horror Concept:
Influencer and his friend who play jokes on people decides to go into a Voodoo shop and play a joke on the person (priestess) behind the counter. When they get home things start to happen. A really old neighbor in the main influencer’s apartment tries to warn him hes marked but he’s a young kid that doesn’t believe in this stuff.
Isolation: Voodoo priestess haunts their dreams. Seems there is always someone staring no matter where they go. No one sees what they see.
Terrorize the Characters: They experience pain and things like throwing up a long worm-like creatures. The dreams of disfigurement and creatures are too real.
Death: Influencer sees his friend kill himself on a live feed on Tictok type app. The influencer can see the lady from the shop actually holding the friend’s arm to make him kill himself. No one else can see this.
Monster/Villain: Voodoo priestess/ creatures conjured up from the depths of the imagination.
High Tension: Old neighbor is a Bruja and tries to help the influencer with Brujeria but the voodoo priestess’ powers are too strong. (No shooting sparks out of fingers or stuff like that)
Departure from reality: Their lives become unlivable with the visions they see and the mind games that happen. Who really believes in this stuff anyway?
Moral Statement: Fuck around and find out.

Hey all,
Aram “Spike” Bauman, Staten Island NY.
I have written a few shorts that I shot and won Sci-fi/Sundance’s Exposure contest and a similar contest IFC channel had a while ago. Since then I haven’t been able to sit down and write anything that I can finish. My day job is cinematographer and over the years I have become too critical of my work which cripples my creativity. The reason I joined this is to get off my butt and write.
I’m just a regular mofo that is in his 50s but thinks he is in his 30s.
