    GROUP RELEASE FORM

    As a member of this group, I agree to the following:

    1. That I will keep the processes, strategies, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class confidential, and that I will NOT share any of this program either privately, with a group, posting online, writing articles, through video or computer programming, or in any other way that would make those processes, teleconferences, communications, lessons, and models of the class available to anyone who is not a member of this class.

    2. That each writer’s work here is copyrighted and that writer is the sole owner of that work. That includes this program which is copyrighted by Hal Croasmun. I acknowledge that submission of an idea to this group constitutes a claim of and the recognition of ownership of that idea.

    I will keep the other writer’s ideas and writing confidential and will not share this information with anyone without the express written permission of the writer/owner. I will not market or even discuss this information with anyone outside this group.

    3. I also understand that many stories and ideas are similar and/or have common themes and from time to time, two or more people can independently and simultaneously generate the same concept or movie idea.

    4. If I have an idea that is the same as or very similar to another group member’s idea, I’ll immediately contact Hal and present proof that I had this idea prior to the beginning of the class. If Hal deems them to be the same idea or close enough to cause harm to either party, he’ll request both parties to present another concept for the class.

    5. If you don’t present proof to Hal that you have the same idea as another person, you agree that all ideas presented to this group are the sole ownership of the person who presented them and you will not write or market another group member’s ideas.

    6. Finally, I agree not to bring suit against anyone in this group for any reason, unless they use a substantial portion of my copyrighted work in a manner that is public and/or that prevents me from marketing my script by shopping it to production companies, agents, managers, actors, networks, studios or any other entertainment industry organizations or people.

    Charles Character Profile Part 2

    What I learned doing this assignment is… looking at your characters with a deliberate eye helps to narrow and focus the story

    Pick the type of role your Protagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
    • Runner – Paul- nurse

    Pick the type of role your Antagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
    • Change Agent – John – dying man

    What other characters might be necessary?
    • Supporting characters: possible love interest
    • Minor roles: wife, kids, priest/deacon
    • Background characters: church goers, hospital patients staff

    Pick your genre.
    • Rom-Com or Buddy Movie
    Buddy Movie: They will each be the Protagonist and the other will be their Antagonist and Friend/Love Interest. They will trigger each other and bring out the best in each other.

    Fill in whatever answers come to you about your lead character profiles.

    Paul – nurse/best friend caregiver
    • Role in the story:
    Paul is here to care for his best friend as he dies from cancer

    • Age range and Description:
    late 30’s early forties

    • Internal Journey:
    Paul will struggle with demons that cause him to be a loner and his struggle to find, acknowledge, and accept god

    • External Journey:
    Paul is a contract nurse that travels from place to place never settling anywhere for very long
    He comes home to help his dying friend and be a support to his family
    settling down at home with new perspective

    • Motivation:
    to help a friend possibly even help his friend end his life with dignity, later to heal old wounds

    • Wound:
    something tragic from the dead somebody/ mother father brother, (thought – maybe he had a part in a euthanasia/suicide and has been running from and helping others to do the same to prove to himself that his role in the whole thing was the right thing to do but that in turn just feeds his guilt) / guilt sadness wanting to change his life through others

    • Mission/Agenda:
    to convince his friend to die in peace with less pain before it gets to bad for everyone, including himself the pain is to much

    • Secret:
    his role in a death of ……………

    • What makes them special?
    The work he does his relationship to family, the point in time in his life where everything is coming together and his ability to avoid and run is no longer working as well

    • What draws us to this character?
    He is a fish out of water, has built a world that he doesn’t have to care or is cared about, and now he
    is forced into a situation where he has to care and look deeper into the world around him

    • Traits:
    wanderer/runaway, elusive, philosophical, liar/to himself and about himself what he projects

    • Subtext:
    wants to believe he is right, but deep inside knows he is wrong

    • Flaw:
    To busy dwelling in the past to see the present or the future

    • Values:
    superficial and what he has been able to convince himself to be true

    • Irony:
    caring compassionate person but is misdirected towards death not life

    • What makes this the right character for this role?
    . he is a character that must confront his weaknesses to grow and be the man he is supposed to be

    • Role in the story:
    John is dying of cancer and although still fighting knows he is going to die, he asks his childhood friend to help him in his last months and to help with his kids after he is gone

    • Age range and Description:
    late 30’s early forties

    • Internal Journey:
    john wants to help his friend and thinks god is the way to do it, he is a peace and wants the same for his friend, he also wants a strong male role model for his children when he is gone

    • External Journey:
    his body is withering he is dying
    • Motivation:
    to bring his his friend and family together to leave something of value

    • Wound:
    he is dying and is at peace with that, but he is fighting and hanging on in hopes of saving his friend and providing support for his family because those are his last worries

    • Mission/Agenda:
    to show his friend there is a better way to live and be free of the burdens he carries

    he knows Paul’s secret

    He is a man trying to right by his family and friend

    • What draws us to this character?
    He is a father trying to secure the future for his children and help his oldest and best friend before he dies

    • Traits:
    compassionate, self-assured, worries not enough time, duck on a pond

    • Subtext:
    He is in agony of dying and leaving his children with out a father and role model, but can not show it for fear of making it harder on his family

    • Flaw:
    is singularly focused and short sighted

    • Values:
    believes in god and family before everything, tries to do what he thinks is right

    • Irony:
    he is so consumed with what is happening in the future he can’t see the present when it comes to his kids and family

    • What makes this the right character for this role?
    this is the man who is fighting the clock his destination is set will he be at ease, will he get what he wants for his family

    What I learned doing this assignment is the importance of knowing who your characters are and what you want them to be is the foundation for the story.
