Vision: To continually learn from this class and be accepted within the film industry.
My concept is a horror film titled ” The Bog”.
1. Scheming and Investigating.
A nefarious real estate developer desires to build on a Northwoods parcel with an old growth forest and adjoining bog. This real estate CEO has lied and manipulated his way to acquiring the land and has recieved critical assistance from a dishonest Town Board Chairman in the process. Once initial site preparation begins a 1000 year old Viking curse is unleashed on local townspeople. A local policewoman investigating the death of a surveyor becomes suspicious of events and sighting near the development. She learns of the illegal possession along with the assist by the local Chaiman.
Major Coverup
As Terror begins to reign down on a small Wisconsin community, all stemming from a Viking curse, it is realized that a cover up of the actions involving the real estate CEO and a local politician occured and is the very reason for the Nordic wrath from 1073 AD.
Superior Position
Caught and identified, the dishonest Chaiman and developer flee and hide by the bog. A policewoman in pursuit realizes both will be killed by angry Norse Gods. -

Bill,s Outline to Script Learned: Yes, I can write right after hernia surgery. The pen always wins. Seriously, I went back and indeed made changes per this lesson and the video preceeding. My screenplay ” Cane” comes out at 120 pages. I am attempting economazation by virtue of this lesson. At 100k per page it is essential to say it best and quickest. Lengthy scripts may be discarded immediately. One item lacking was my failure to introduce the Antagonist early on, say by page 11. I often refere to earlier lessons with ScreewU including this class. The late Syd Field,s book has become a quasi Bible of sorts. For my current script: Totally eliminated 4 scenes. If they do not advance either the story or a specific character, they must be removed. I made improvements to 9 scenes by following the 2 rules above. What is really interesting is the addition of 6 new scenes via economization. The script is actually 11 pages shorter
I believe by the end of this Rewrite Class “Cane” will be shorter still.
-
Bill elevates key characters. Learned. I neglected to explained my Antagonist early in the story. This is a key lesson learned. I have now introduced my Antagonist, psychotic oil exec Robert Conley. JR. Within the first four pages. By page 6 we need to know the basic tenets of a screenplay,s story. After a severe waterspout ravages metro Miami Conley dismisses the event as ” normal” tropical weather. Protagonist Dr. Tomo Nikigami claims it is a sign of a worsening climate. Very soon in late ACT 1 we see Conley Jr. watching Dr. Nikigami after Nikigami claims the very same waterspouts in Miami as the start of the dreaded Nikigami Sequence. This will culminate in “Cane” , the greatest hurricane in 100, 000 years. Nikigami,s assertion that CO2 is the culprit sends Conley,Jr into a panic. Dr. Nikigami,s bombshell announcement could cost Conley billions in lost profits. I have heightened the acrimony between Prot. and Antg much sooner with identification of Antg Conley sooner as well. These critical changes early on help dramatize key scenes later in the script. I believe additional changes are likely before “Cane” is shopped. I also better define my secondary talent and their respective roles and dialogue .
-
Bill Curley Solving Major Problems. Learned: This lesson told me a rewrite was absolutely required. Scene upgrades and changes: Opening. Protagonist Dr. Tomo Nikigami leaves a research ship with an ominous response to a ship captain,s question. Immediately thereafter a monster waterspout smashes Miami as Nikigami heads for the airport. The waterspout creates more opportunity as it sets up the Inciting Incident, one involving a cover up of Global Warming some 55 years earlier when Nikigami was a 22 year old student. Key Incident Ac1 to 2. Nikigami makes good on a bombshell announcement. This begins Nikigami,s danger zone . Antagonist psychotic oil exec Robert Conley, Jr sees the professor,s press conference. He immediately plans to silence him having recieved repeated reports from a student spy inplant. Nikigami,s revelation likely exposes those who assasinated JFK due to oil deposits discoverd of the Vientam coast with the direct help of both the CIA and an oil company owned by Conley,s very father. The bombshell press conference also endangers billions in oil industry profits by questioning the need for both the Canadian Tar Sands and Keystone pipeline projects. Midpoint and Story Twist. New scenes here. Conley has ordered a hit on Nikigami. Five assasins flown from Miami to Wisconsin smash into Nikigami,s Lake Mendota condo to kill him. Nikigami, skilled with swordsmenship learned in his youth back in Japan, grabs a Japanese Honshu sword and takes out all five would be killers one by one. Act 3 Lowpoint. More opportunities for scene improvement. The Monster hurricane called ” Cane” has destroyed Florida and ravaged the US East Coast is dying in the High Arctic. It will flip Earth,s climate to a runaway Mesozoic “Hot House” climate for the next 50 million years. Nikigami , now with the President and several others at the Pentagon are flow in to a battered but rebuilt Jacksonville,FL airport courtesy of the Navy Seabees in Air Force One. Ending: I think this final scence culminating the ending may be one of Hollywood,s classis scenes much like the ending in the 1968 classic “Planet of the Apes”. Nikigami, President Hans Bitterman, Army General Butch Majkowski and a handful of Seconday individuals exit two military Humvees. The stare southward in stunned silence and manifest horror. Severely damaged I 95 runs onto an open ocean. Florida is GONE.
-
Bill’s Core Elements. Learned” This was a valuable, I dare say required lesson. I went back to my script with bountiful new notes. My pitch is more direct and informative. “Stalked by a psychotic oil exec, a research professor must outsmart assasins, warn the President of climate Armegeddon. ” “Cane” is a combination of two genres, Sci fi and thriller. …. . I added dialogue in Act 1 to introduce my Antagonist much sooner along with other key characters to best snapshot their normal or old” ways before my Inciting Incident. Character profiles are now, after review of the complete screenplay, better matched to dialogue and action. I also added missing subtext as required. This rewrite class is essential for any screenplay project.

Bill Curley. Lesson 3 Learned: I was really encouraged by incorporating this lesson with the newly learned 4 Act structure. That was a real breakthrough. All these lessons and insights are now better understood and performed with the 4 Act paradigm. Title: “Cane” Concept: A true Sci Fi climate disaster story with a mixture of the Thriller genre , a condition that adds excitement. Genre: Primarily Sci Fi with elements of the Thriller genre. Main Conflict: A university professor must outwit a psychotic oil CEO and warn the US President of a mammoth hurricane. Purpose: A professor,s prediction of climate disasters made 55 years ago is now happening. While attempting to convince high level authorities of the likelyhood of a monster hurricane, the prof must outwit assasins hired to kill him by a Miami based oil exec. Demand: The professor, Dr. Tomo Nikigami, must without fail appeal and convince the US President, Hans Bitterman, that action must take place now, principally the complete evacuation of Florida. Mission: To survive a ninja attack at his lakeside condo and continue to sound the alarm. Escalating Action: The oil exec is determined to silence the prof. At the same time indications in the Atlantic suggest the development of a Biblical type storm system. It is the feared super hurricane ” Cane”. Hero: Climatology Professor at Southern Wisconsin State University, Dr. Tomo Nikigami. Antagonist: Mr. Robert Conley of Conley Oil LMT. Conley is a psychotic oil CEO whose late father was accused of rising CO2 levels by an exchange student from Japan back in the mid 1960,s. That student, incredibly, was Tomo Nikigami. Now oin 2025 Professor Nikigami threatens Conley,s oil empire. Structure: Inciting Incident. A secret meeting between Nikigami and two grad students will lead to a bombshell announcement of a massive cover up of Global Warming in 1966. The parties responsible were involved with JFK,s assisination due to oil discovered off the coast of South Vietnam. A student spy in Nikigami,s class, one placed there by Conley to monitor liberal climate change professors like Dr. Nikigamial, reports to her boss, that being Robery Conley. Midpoint Twist. Conley ups the ante. He sends five trained assasins to Nikigami,s Madison. WI lakeside condo to murder him. Act 3 to 4 low point: Nikigami is now tailed by informants to set up another kill op. The storm he feared is now rapidly developing in the western Atlantic Basin. He, Nikigami, is rescued in a college football stadium from danger by a military chopper via Presidential decree and is wisked to the Pentagon War Room to assist President Hans Bitterman as the ” Cane” megastorm is about to destroy Florida. Act 4. A Biblical disaster unfolds. The massive hurricane is at peak. As it moves and ultimately dies in the High Arctic the planet,s current climate is rapidly flipped to a Mesozoic Hot House climate not seen I 70 million years. Final scene Act 4: All the main characters stand next to a couple military Humvees just south of Jacksonville, FL. I 95, severely damaged and unrecognizable, runs straight into an open ocean. Florida is GONE.
-
Bill Curley LessGone. Learned: Proper, correct structure makes for a great story and script. Genre: Sci Fi and Thriller. Title: “Cane”. High Concept: The story revolves around a university professor,s announcement of a massive cover up of Global Warming 55 years ago. ……… .. …. Opening; A Navy captain asks a prof what he learned performing open ocean research. The reply is foreboding. Record warm ocean temps spell imminent doom. … Inciting Incident: The prof calls his two graduate students to a sudden meeting on campus. He will announce a bombshell. Key Incident: Prof gathers all at what looks like a routine lecture. It is not. Prof announces a cover up of Global Warming and the possibility of a massive hurricane. Key Incident: The announcement is made. A deranged oil exec plans prof,s death. Midpoint: While disclosing a climate cover up with a reporter, prof,s condo is smashed by five assasins. Act 3 to 4. Low Point. The prof just survived a murder attempt on his life. Now stalked. Storm has developed as suspected. 17 hours to evacuate FL. Act 4. “Cane” has come and departed. The climate is now flipping to a Mesozoic ” hot house” not seen on planet Earth in 70 million years. Resolution: All characters stand next to a couple military Humvees on a devastated I 95. They stare in horror. The freeway runs into an open ocean. Florida is gone.

Bill Curley Monster Reveal Track. What I Learned: “The Thing” really opened my eyes after watching it. Having seen this film and the original I now know how skillfully our lesson 7 was imbeded within the story. My monsters are actually two tiered within the story. Initially we see giant sized normally seen firest animals. The Monster size is dramatized to show that they are ” guardians” of an ancient sacred burial grounds for Native Americans. Later as my story unfolds the monsters become alien like and infinitely more deadly i.e. the ” Wendigos”, terrifying beasts of Indian lore. Opening Scene: Demand: Giant sized raccoons and porcupines accompany an Indian warrior and his son to a sacred burial site off limits until entry is approved by the “spirits. The father instructs his son of the importance of this bog and adjoining old growth forest. A warning is given. The large beasts are ” guardians” of ghis primal area. Reveal: The huge creatures appear and walk with both Native Americans. Inciting Incident in Act 1. Demand: Why has a surveyor not returned to a construction trailer after entering an ancient burial ground. Reveal: The young man has several huge porcupine quils slicing through his body. A last minute frantic description only heightens the intrigue. Key Incident Act 1 to Act 2. Several.members of a construction crew are found torn apart limb to limb in a sacred Indian burial site destined to be a Northwoods real estate development. Demand: Several members of a construction crew have gone missing. Reveal: Their remains are found in a bloodied pit of shredded body parts. Midpoint: Demand: Scary, alleged sightings of grotesque looking creatures. Reveal: Terrifing Indian lore monsters aka The ” Wendigos” exit an ancient burial site and surround a workplace trailer. Act 3. Demand. Townspeople hear a commotion and sounds of panic. Reveal: Horrifying beasts resembling a deer, devil and small dinosaur attack a small Wisconsin Northwoods community as an ancient Native American burial site was desecrated repeatedly despite a crescendo of warnings. End: Demand. Wholesale carnage is all that remains of a peaceful community. Reveal. National Guardsmen walk about a disaster area of dead bodies, exterminated monsters. The fight is over but with a huge cost. A lesson is sadly learned.

Bill Curley Horror Situation Track. What I Learned. There now exists a myriad of combinations to express horror in my script. I feel like a painter with 50 new colors to choose from. While still constructing my screenplay here are a few possibilities. Opening Scene: Isolated. Warning. An Indian warrior and son approach a sacred burial site in 1674 Wisconsin. The father warns his son never to violate this large old growth forest and attached bog. Suddenly two giant size forest creatures appear. They are ” the guardians”. Inciting Incident: Isolated/ Attacked. A surveyor violates the ancient sacred area for a real estate development. He is Isolated and then attacked by a monster sized porcupine. When he staggers back to a construction trailer: Spooky/Monster. Several fellow workers see a man with giant quils lanced in his torso. This immediately creates Paronioa. Act 3i.e low point. Countless Wendigos, monsters of Native American lore invade a small Wisconsin town in revenge. Torture/ Witness Death. Spooky/ Monsters visible. My horror script ” The Bog” should have multiple combinations of what is seen in this lesson.

Bill Curley My Concept Group: My group consists of both professionals in the construction and real estate profession and local politicians. All play active roles in the screenplay “The Bog”. Dying Pattern: My dying pattern consists of several people, professionasl and laborers. Many in both groups recieve hidious deaths when intentionally violating an ancient Native American Barial ground in the Wisconsin Northwoods. A showdown comes about at script,s end. Leader: A real estate development firm and its CEO insist on violating sacred burial grounds to build luxury homes in an ancient bog rimmed by old growth forests protected for centuries. Rescue: Nagawicka. This beautiful Indian squaw reverses the pattern of horrific deaths and preserves an ancient area of forest from developent. Any individual in violation will experience an agonizing death by any one of asorted Wendigos, horrific monsters of Indian lore. Innocent: Several workers of a land development firm recieve gruesome deaths while performing thier jobs. Deaths occur when giant porcupines and assorted woodland animals become giant sized via Indian spirits. Complainer: A construction worker begins a trend of constant bickering and decension when questioning the merit of the very project he is working on. Moral One: One of the employees openly questions the role of his boss in invading sacred burial grounds. Monsters spare his life. Monster Bait: A local real estate agent attempts to communicate with monsters deep inside a burial ground. This individual merely seals he own fate. Note: Other characters will be placed as needed. What I learned: Every horror movie has succesful templates of which to construct a viable screenplay. I now have an excellent framework by which I can develop my unique story.

Bill Curley Terrifing Monster Lesson 2 My monster is the horrifying representation of ancient Native American angst, the sucking Wendigo. Terror: The Wendigo appears in several forms, all grotesque, sly, vengeful and very intelligent. Mystery: The wrath of Native American lore, the Wendigo, will not manifest itself unless summoned by Native American spirits. Should it suddenly appear prepare for a living hell. Appearence: The Wendigo has variations in stature, appearance and intent. All posess deadly spikes, maiming claws and a beyond repulsive look. Imagine a buck, human and crab in one Visage. Rules: The Wendigo has no rules. Stealth, cunning, purpose and domination are but a few characteristics. The ancient forests of sacred Indian burial grounds represent thier unchallenged domain. Mythology: Called upon only when wronged, the Wendigo is borne in legend and secrecy. It is a direct function of Native American spirits when those same spirits are violated. Learned: The mere notion of a monster or even several of them denotes sophisticated in a given film not realized by a viewer. With the usage of this lesson I can now construct a viable monster, one guaranteed to terrorize all.

Lesson 1: Horror Conventions. Movie Title: ” The Monster” Terrorized Characters: Mother. Estranged Daughter. Tow Truck Driver. Isolation: All three characters find themselves on a desolate, remote Wisconsin backroad nestled in a thick woods. Note: Filmed in Ontario. The mother and daughter are terrorized when thier car becomes disabled after attempting to avoid hitting a deer. A tow truck driver, while hooking up thier car for tow is attacked by a hideous looking monster, one lurking in a roadside woods watching . The unfortunate man is ripped apart with one of his severed limbs landing on the mother,s windshield. Monster: An ugly, horrifying Vvisage with a gorilla type body. 90 % of the face is a massive set of gnarling, menacing teeth. Yes, this Monster was quite fearful. High Tension: Mother and estranged daughter become stranded after avoiding hitting a deer. The must now wait seemingly forever for a tow truck. While waiting ominous sounds and movements are seen in a wooded area adjacent to a disabled 4 door vehicle. The situation with a stranded car, scary surroundings and the horrifying death of the tow truck driver catapults the location to surreal disreality. Moral Statement: Prior to thier road trip mother and daughter had an estranged relationship. Fighting and bickering were both the norm at home, in the family car, etc. The horrifying experience both had required support and protection from.one to another. A deadly, ravaging monster reunited an internecine mother/ daughter relationship. What I Learned: The horrifying movie readily fit our class model, a realization I made only after looking at our class parameters.
