    What I Learned:

Again, I’m not counting on having a relationship that would leverage this topic. However, I can see how it can be done well if it is done with some subtlety.

    First Watch:

What causes you to believe these two belong together? This scene was a bit too “on the nose.” The glances the dude makes between the wild young jockey and the wild young horse make it obvious that they should be together. Everything the dude said about the horse immediately transferred to the jockey.

    Second Watch:

What drama is this scene built around? The underlying drama is that the horse is an investment, and it must race to produce a payout. But the horse is too wild to race and win.

What profile items (right character, traits, secret, wound, future) showed up in these two characters’ words and actions? Stubbornness, boldness, independence

    First Watch:

What causes you to believe these two belong together? Annie is very empathetic, while Sam is bravely exposing himself. What causes you to believe is the fact that they seem to express similar emotions during the call.

    Second Watch:

What drama is this scene built around? The drama is built around the son’s belief that his father needs a new wife.

What profile items (right character, traits, secret, wound, future) showed up in these two characters’ words and actions? The wound they are mourning is the death of the wife. The son seems to be healing faster than the father.

    What I Learned:

It could be nice to have a similar scene. I could have two characters display some behavior or emotion that suggests they should be together. I’m still on the fence about having there be a romance though.

Wounds are the basis of motivation. My main character does not yet have a wound. I have to come up with one.

    First Watch:

What causes both characters to reveal their wounds? Skylar wants Will to come with her back to California, but Will is hesitant.

How are those wounds motivating their emotions, actions, and reactions? She wants love and is asking for it. Is he scared? He acts like the love isn’t real or is scared to make such a serious decision.

How is each character threatening the other’s wound? If he does not come, that means he does not love her, which is one of her fears. He doesn’t trust her desire to be with him for the long haul.

    Second Watch:

What drama was this scene built around? The underlying drama is the birth of a new relationship. How fast should it develop?

What traits showed up in these characters’ words and actions?

Skylar – Eager, bold, excited, loves love

Will – Fearful of new things, secure in his surroundings, distrustful

    What I Learned:

I guess the lesson here is that my character should have a secret that gets revealed. I’m trying to brainstorm how to give my character a secret. Perhaps he has a backstory that even he isn’t aware of but someone else tells him his own story.

How is Kate’s secret set up? She is first classified as dangerous enough for a dying man to stress the point so forcefully.

What causes the demand to know what the secret is? We are intrigued. We want to know what the

How is Kate’s secret revealed? The reveal comes by way of admission during a fun and sexy game. Brilliant. Then we get a crafty reveal of the actual deed in the third clip.

    Second Watch:

What drama was this scene built around? Instead of a whodunit, we have a what have they done?

What traits showed up in these characters’ words and actions?

Kate is crafty, worldly, and much more of an open book than one would think.

Sawyer seems to just be a slick smooth talker.

As I continue to work on my main character, I know that I don’t want the villain or the supporting character to be Magical. That’s bullshit. My main character has a past, clear desires, hidden desires, and a future just like Junah.

Junah is coming from trauma that has caused him to lose his swing. He wants it back.

Bagger is coming from some “Magical Negro” place. We don’t know his intentions or desires.

    Second Watch:

The drama base is the upcoming match.

Junah’s trait of desiring to be a winner shows up.

Bagger’s trait to help shows up

My main character has a clear future as the leader of a rebellion that he doesn’t yet believe he could ever be a part of. Now I know how important that future is. I feel validated.

What I learned while rethinking my main character is that he/she must have a kick-ass soliloquy that tears someone down. I’m not joking. The first two clips we watched were powerful presentations of characterization.

Also, it’s okay to show your character as bold and heroic when necessary. Will goes in hard but makes it so that the conflict doesn’t turn into a fight, even though he invited the fight.

    1st Viewing – Will’s Traits

    – Self-assured

    – Brilliant

    – Willing to hang back and protect his friend

    – Protective of his friend

    – Ready to go to the mat if necessary

    2nd Viewing – Drama

    – The drama centered around the male dynamic when trying to pick up chicks by impressing them. Two competing camps were fighting over the girls. The trigger was the insulting way Will’s friend was getting treated.

    – They picked a Harvard bar because that’s where the hot and socially valuable girls are.

Wilton Blake’s Analysis of Groundhog Day

What I learned doing this assignment is that even movies that are just average can be profound in some ways?

    1. What is the CHANGE this movie is about? What is the Transformational Journey of this movie?

Changing from a rude, arrogant, asshole into a kind, lovable person.

    2. Lead characters:

o Who is the Change Agent (the one causing the change) and what makes this the right character to cause the change? Rita

o Who is the Transformable Character (the one who makes the change) and what makes them the right character to deliver this profound journey? Phil

o What is the Oppression? Time – Groundhog Day

    3. How are we lured into the profound journey? What causes us to connect with this story?

o We want to see Phil change?

o Will Phil ever escape the time loop?

    4. Looking at the character(s) who are changed the most, what is the profound journey? From “old ways” to “new way of being.” Identify their old way: Identify their new way at the conclusion:

o Asshole to Kind and generous

    5. What is the gradient the change? What steps did the Transformational Character go through as they were changing?

o Repeatedly waking up on Groundhog Day.

o Realizing that the day is repeating itself.

    o Asking Rita for help.

o Taking advantage of the situation

o Seducing Rita but it fails

    o Gets upset

    o Steals groundhog

o Tries to kill himself multiple times

o Admitting he is an asshole

o Turned into a nice guy, start reading books, taking piano lessons, making an ice sculpture, helps homeless man, changing old lady’s tire

    6. How is the “old way” challenged? What beliefs are challenged that cause a main character to shift their perspective…and make the change?

o By the end, he knows that the only way to win love is to be a kinder person. He couldn’t get her with tricks.

    7. What are the most profound moments of the movie?

o Realizing that he is reliving the same day

    o Asking for help

    o Seeing a psychiatrist

o Phil asks Rita out for a date

    o Phil and Rita kiss

    o Rita wants to leave

o Rita slaps him day after day

    o 6:00 arrives dramatically

o Phil tries to convince Rita he’s a god

o Professes his love for Rita while she’s sleep

o Becomes the most popular guy in town

o Rita wins Phil at an auction

    o They kiss

    o Rita awakens

    8. What are the most profound lines of the movie?

o “What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same and nothing you did mattered.”

o What if there were no tomorrow? We could do whatever we want.”

o “I’m not going to live by their rules anymore.”

    o “I don’t worry about anything anymore.”

o “Rita, if you only had one day to live, what would you do with it?”

o “I could never love someone like you because the only one you love is yourself.”

o “Maybe the real god uses tricks. Maybe he’s not omnipotent. It’s just that he’s been around long enough that he knows everything.”

o “No matter what happens tomorrow, or for the rest of my life, I’m happy now cuz I love you”

o “Something’s different. Anything different is good.”

    o “Today is tomorrow.”

    9. How does the ending payoff the setups of this movie?

o His self-absorption turns into selflessness. He honestly becomes the man the woman he loves wants him to be.

    10. What is the Profound Truth of this movie?

o We deserve love when we give love
